A THOUSAND TERRORISTS FOR SHALIT’S FREEDOM STIRS ISRAELI DEBATE

BY PAULA WOLFSON

Members of the U.S. Senate are bracing for a difficult debate on health-care reform, following an unusual Saturday vote that cleared the way for consideration of the necessary legislation. It is a debate that could have a big impact on next year's congressional election. ith an eye to the 2010 election, senators are lining up on all sides of the health-care debate. Democrats drafted the legislation now before the Senate, and while some party members want to see signif icant changes, all voted to proceed with debate. Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin called the vote an amazing victory for President Barack Obama and the party leadership. But during an appearance on the NBC television program Meet the Press, he said it is only a beginning. "This senate should not avoid this debate. I hope in the end some Republicans will cross over and help us to put together a good bill that will serve this nation," he said. The National Union party held a news conference earlier this week, in which they warned Knesset members of the deal's risks and criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Netanyahu is crossing (former PM Ehud) Olmert's red lines. Netanyahu does not stop at red lights; not even

Olmert's red light," said National Union MK Arieh Eldad. MK Eldad continued to say, that if Damian Kerlik, who is accused of the recent murder of the Ushrenko family, would have escaped prison – many police off icers would have taken to the streets – suggesting that the government was about to release hundreds of murderers of the same magnitude. "The murderers that will be released killed between one and 65 people each. Start calculating how many Israelis might pay with their lives for the government's irresponsible decision," said Eldad. "Olmert said at the end of his term that there were red lines the government of Israel was not willing to cross," continued Eldad, "I have learned that the National Security Council was not asked t o
