The USS New York, made with 7.5 tons of steel from the destruction of 9/11, arrived in New York City where it paused by the World Trade Center and crewmembers stood upon the flight deck as the ship received a 21 gun shot salute in remeberance of those who were killed. BY PAULA PINTO

Hundreds of onlookers stood along the Hudson River to welcome the USS New York, a 684-foot assault ship with a bow made of 7.5 tons of steel from the destruction of the Twin Towers.

T

he USS New York, which made the f ive-day voyage from Norfolk, VA to New York, was greeted by cheering crowds that watched it sail beneath the Verazzano Bridge before making its way to the World Trade Center site in remembrance of those who were killed on 9/11. While paused at the WTC site, sailors and Marines stood on its flight deck in the gusty rain and a detail f ired a 21 gun shot salute. The massive ship then circled the Upper East Side before continuing its voyage beneath the George Washington Bridge and preparing to dock in Midtown Manhattan. As the ship arrived at Pier 88, next to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, Fireboats released streams of red, white and blue

water in a celebratory greeting. The September 11th Families Association, president Lee Ielpi, whose son Jonathan, 29, a firefighter killed during the devastation of 9/11, was among the many who had tears in his eyes while observing the ship. "I'm thinking of my son. It's a good day. We're smiling through our tears,” Ielpi said. The chief operating officer for American Defense Systems, Ferg Foley, who spent two weeks following the attacks on September 11, 2001 coordinating the response at Ground Zero, said, “It's amazing to be onboard just knowing that it has some of that steel from Ground Zero and that it represents the fighting spirit of the United States. You can sense the pride of the service men and women working on the ship." As the boat circled Battery Park, in Manhattan, Commander Erich Schmidt, the ship’s executive officer told the crew over the loudspeaker, “You’ve done a great job getting us here. Now enjoy it.
