Bloomberg and Giuliani Visit Holocaust Survivors In Boro Park

As part of the informal boycott, The Israeli Union has discourgaed tourism to Turkey. This popular destination is known to attract more than 100,000 Israeli visitors, annually. BY JEWISH VOCE STAFF

High tension between Israel and Turkey has resulted in an informal boycott. Israelis are punishing Turkey by not visiting the country as tourists and by refusing to sell Turkish products in Israel.

T

he reason for the boycott is the latest diplomatic tension between the two countries, which began when an international military exercise, which was supposed to be held in Turkey and to include the U.S. and NATO, were canceled because Turkey had opposition to Israel being part of the exercise. According to a survey by the Israeli publication, Arutz Sheva, a number of tourist agencies in Israel found that the demand for Turkish tourist resorts dropped significantly over the past two weeks. “The end of the season plus the crisis between Turkey and Israel have hit tourism severely,” a tourism agency representative told the publication. Israeli media also reported that Illan’s coffee chain would not sell Turkish coffee in response to the tensions, Israeli media reported.

“We have decided for the time being to stop selling ‘Istanbul coffee’ - our Turkish coffee blend, and we shall keep doing it until matters improve,” Michael Steg, director of marketing for the large chain, told the Ynet news website. An El Al official told Army Radio that many Israeli businesses have also decided to stop subsidizing employee vacations to Turkey which usually sees up to 80,000 Israeli visitors to Turkish resorts. This is not the first time Turkey, which is a popular destination for Israeli tourists, has been affected by biter relations. According to the Israeli publication, YNET, Israel will also refrain from Turkish independence day celebrations, which are planned for the end of October. Many Israeli government ministers who have been invited to celebrate Turkey's 86th Independence Day later this month at the Turkish ambassador's residence in Kfar Shmaryahu, are planning to boycott the event on the backdrop of recent tensions between Jerusalem and Ankara.

For the last several months, the buzz and excitement surrounding the rematch between the New York Knicks and the Israeli Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv basketball teams at Madison Square Garden built greater and greater enthusiasm. he preseason, charity exhibition game, benefiting Migdal Ohr was a repeat of the contest that brought the teams together two years ago. That event drew the largest crowd for an exhibition game ever at Madison Square Garden. This year’s game was the inspiration of Isaiah Thomas of the New York Knicks and Tal Brody of Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv .
