CHILDREN OF TERROR WELCOMED BY THE SEPHARDIC COMMUNITY
Fifty major Afghan drug traffickers whose trade supports Taliban activities have been placed on the U.S. target list as part of a new effort to staunch Afghanistan's vibrant opium-poppy and heroin market. .S. and NATO troops are attacking drug warehouses and narcotics dealers with militant ties in a dramatic shift in American counter-narcotics policy. This move, according to U.S. commanders, is aimed at stopping the flow of money from Afghanistan's drug trade to the Taliban. Commanders told Congress they believed this strategy was legal under the military's rules of engagement and international law. The Senate foreign relations committee will soon reveal the policy shift that was "a hard sell in NATO" according to General John Craddock, NATO's supreme allied commander until his retirement in July. Targeted drug raids were approved in late 2008 by NATO defense ministers on the condition that there was an evident connection between the drug lords and Taliban terrorism. Making the link between trafficker and insurgent is established, the target is added to the "joint integrated prioritised target" list, making drug lords status evidential to insurgency leaders wanted by America, said Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, top U.S. spokesman in Afghanistan. Commanders have no restrictions on use of force against such targets, meaning they can be "killed or captured on the battlefield" at any time, the foreign relations committee stated. There are currently 367 targets on the 'kill or capture' list, including 50 major traffickers known to finance the Taliban. The joint list concept emerged as attempt to avoid legal issues. European allies have previously balked at the use of military

This past Friday August 7, 2009, twenty-one children arrived in New York to participate in the Friends of the IDF LEGACY Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program. The FIDF LEGACY Program supports the families of soldiers who have fallen while serving their country in the IDF. For a child whose parent or sibling has been killed in action, becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a bittersweet moment. FIDF ensures that these children have the time of their lives.

his year, the annual event is an especially note worthy celebration, closely following the recent dedication of the 12 million dollar National Visitors’ Center, funded through the generous assistance of former Ambassador John L. Loeb. The Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue structure in the United States, is approaching its 250th anniversary. The congregation traces its history to 1658 when 15 Jewish families Sephardim (“Spanish Jews” in Hebrew) founded Congregation Jeshuat Israel (Salvation of Israel). The community, which worshiped in private homes for more than a century, was the second Jewish settlement in the newly forming American colonies.
