CITY COUNCIL ACTION AIDS BLOOMBERG CONEY ISLAND PLAN

Guests may expect many things as part of a wedding celebration, but a bomb threat is certainly not one. As bride and groom Yossi and Franni Teitlebaum celebrated their midsummer nuptials, they and their guests were suddenly ordered to evacuate their reception site, Congregation Ohel Simha, located on Park Avenue in Long Branch, New Jersey. olice from Deal and Long Branch were called Tuesday evening to respond to bomb threats at several synagogues on Park Avenue in Long Branch, New Jersey. The area is close to the Deal community. Lieutenant Robert Wiener of the Long Branch Police Department said that two Park Avenue synagogues may be affected by the threat. Although the site of the synagogue at which the wedding was taking place was initially reported to be Congregation Brothers Israel at 250 Park Avenue, Long Branch, an onsite witness has told the Jewish Voice that the bomb threat was actually against Congregation Ohel Simha, also located on Park Avenue. According to wedding guests brothers Joshua and Jack Verstandig of Brooklyn, some 300 guests were calmly evacuated from the synagogues by the Long Branch police arrived. Guests said the evacuation took about 15 minutes, from 8:15 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. Witnesses stated that “a couple of dozen Torahs” were also removed. Through the generosity of an area resident, the party continued at an alternate neighborhood location near the synagogue. News reports initially cited the “Brothers of Israel” Synagogue as the site of the bomb sit but Jewish Voice on the scene reporter Morris Antebi says the site of the bomb threat was incorrectly identif ied.

The Thor Equities site is considered essential to “Bloomberg's vision” for Coney Island redevelopment. New housing, entertainment and retail resources would create thousands of new jobs, including many in construction.

Once upon a time .... there was the sea and the sand and the hotdogs and a first kiss under the boardwalk. Coney Island has been a fantasy summer experience for more than a hundred years. From summer "hoties" to winter “polar bears”, thousands have come to enjoythe special atmosphere . ven in its current depressed condition, the Brooklyn beachfront attracts ten's of thousands - though not all are at the "People's Playground" for hot dogs and sunshine. Life is not good for many Coney Island residents who face drug sellers, unemployment. Many of the signature rides and amusements have disappeared- some have simply crumbled. Not yet, but only the land-

marked Cyclone roller coaster continues to elicitrider's screams. A different sort of scream is coming from City Council and the office of Deputy Mayor Robert Lieber, acting on behalf of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Mayors ‘area redevelopment plan. The City Council has "voted overwhelmingly for the mayor's 47acre rezoning plan” which would change the face of Coney Island completely. The waterfront would become a year-round destination, complete with hotels, shopping, restaurants, and movie theaters. The first new roller coaster since the construction of the 1927 Cyclone is included in the Mayor’s plan. In the midst of those 47 acres sit the essential 10.5 acres owned by Thor Equities. nowing Sid Zion was an experience. Being at dinner with Sid Zion was a bit like being in a king’s court. One after another, admirers would come and pay homage. Sitting at his favorite table in one or another of some of New York’s most renowned watering holes, one never knew who would come to greet, or thank, or remember when. Whether a firefighter mourning the death of fellows lost in the Deutche Bank Building or political personalities, Sid knew everyone. Sid was bigger than life. Whether in Elaine’s or Gallagher’s, Sid was a raconteur. He always had what to say, always wanted to be listened to, but willing to listen, too. Whether he was ranting about some editor who “probably couldn't read” or a publication that refused to publish an article he had spent hours and hours writing, Sid had a thousand stories ready to tell (and certainly thousands more after those).
