IRANIAN STREET ERUPTS: AHMADINEJAD INAUGURATION STILL SCHEDULED Department of Homeland Security Announces Grants To Jewish Institutions BY DAVID POLLOCK

The Department of Homeland Security formally informed their state affiliates of the successful Y2009 Nonprofit Security Grant Programs applicants. New York nonprofits did better than last year, winning 31% of the $15 million distributed nationally. Across the state, 68 of 137 applicants were successful. New York State did not yet receive specific grant amounts. ntil the New York State Office of Homeland Security receives confirmation of the specific award amounts it cannot notify the winners and losers of the results. They have an exemplary record of getting the information out quickly. However, it does take some time to verify the list and to prepare accurate notifications. Please try to be patient. We all owe a special debt of gratitude to those dedicated public servants who actually administer the grants and answer our questions, especially Shelley Wahrlich, Steve Tierney and Valerie Bloomer. This program could not be successful without their dedication, patience and expertise. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to be sworn in for a second term sometime between July 26 and August 19, despite the massive objection expressed by many Iranians who claim the voting was manipulated in his favor. he Guardian Council, Iran's election authority, confirmed Ahmadinejad as the winner with 62.63 percent of the vote. His rival, Mir Hossein Moussavi, received 33.75 percent, according to the results. Following Moussavi’s allegations that the election result was fraudulent, and demanding a recount, thousands of demonstrators protested along the Iranian streets demanding that the outcome be reviewed. Yet despite the

popular negative response to Ahmedinajad’s victory, the Guardian Council said there is no possibility of an annulment. However, they admitted that there were some irregularities that took place. Following the election, total mayhem broke out in Iran, which resulted in dozens of protestors killed by Iranian police, hundreds imprisoned, and all media access banned from the country. The few provacative glimpses and descriptions of what has taken place since the election, reveals Iranian people who are desperate for civil liberties, and many believe that their demonstrations will not cease despite the cruel actions which are being taken by the Iranian government. Some of the most gruesome footage showed protestor, Neda Salehi Agha Soltan, 26, who was killed by a government sniper
