One Dead, Three Injured in Blistering Rego Park Blaze

By Michael V. Cusenza An elderly woman was killed and three others injured, including two firefighters, late Tuesday night in a ferocious, fast-moving fire that left a Rego Park home devastated. More than 100 of the City’s Bravest battled the all-hands inferno that broke out around 11 p.m. inside the two-story home on 66th Avenue near Woodhaven Boulevard. They discovered an unresponsive Rosemary Monaco, 86, in the house. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 54-year-old man, believed to be Monaco’s son, was rushed to an area hospital. Two smoke-eaters were treated for minor injuries, according to City Fire Department officials. “Our units responded within five minutes. They were met with heavy fire on the first and second floor of this private dwelling. They made an aggressive interior attack," FDNY Deputy Chief Christopher Paolicelli told CBS News. As of Wednesday afternoon a team of fire marshals were at the home. The investigation is ongoing.

Man Found Fit to Stand Trial in Howard Beach/ JFK Station Attack

By Forum Staff Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Waheed Foster was found fit to stand trial and arraigned last week on an indictment charging him with attempted murder in connection with the violent, unprovoked assault that left a subway rider blind in one eye after she was beaten in September 2022 at the Howard Beach/JFK station on her way to work. Foster, 43, who is homeless, was indicted in September 2022 for attempted murder, assault in the first degree, three counts of assault in the second degree and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. He was arraigned on the charges last Monday after being found mentally competent to stand trial. According to the charges: On Sept. 20, 2022, at approximately 5:30 a.m., Foster followed 33-year-old Elizabeth Gomes as she got off a train at the Howard Beach/JFK Airport subway station on her way to work. As she went up the stairs, Foster came up from behind and struck her in the head with a hard object.

As observed on video surveillance footage, Gomes fled, running through the station. Foster chased her and threw her to the ground after catching up to her. As Gomes lay on the ground, Foster punched her in the face repeatedly and stomped on her head. As Gomes began to get up off the ground, Foster kicked her in the face, knocking the victim back down. Foster then repeatedly kicked the victim in the face. A Good Samaritan seen in the video attempting to intervene is chased away by Foster. Gomes was taken to a local hospital where she underwent emergency eye surgery. As a result of her injuries, she lost sight in her right eye. “The brutality and especially the randomness of the attack shook the city and struck fear in the millions of New Yorkers who depend on the subway system every day,” Katz said. “It is essential to keep confidence in our public transit systems high. That means holding accountable anyone who undermines passenger safety and security.” If convicted, Foster faces up to 25 years in prison.

URINARY INCONTINENCE: YOUR PHARMACIST CAN HELP Urinary incontinence (UI), the involuntary leakage of urine, is a difficult condition for many patients to face and discuss. Statistics demonstrate that an estimated 10 to 30% of men and women are affected nationally. The numbers are believed to be even higher however, because of the unwillingness in many patients to acknowledge or address the situation. Patients who suffer with UI symptoms can develop poor self-rated health, depression, and mobility disability. And in addition to the varied psychological burdens on patients with UI, there are also significant financial taxation on these patients. Studies show billions of dollars are spent on the condition, its treatment and supplies yearly. UI can be transient and reversible, or it can be established and chronic. There are four main types of UI–stress, urge, overflow, and functional incontinence. Incontinence differs and is categorized according to individual types based on the symptoms. Stress incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine on effort or physical exertion or on sneezing or cough.” Urge incontinence is the “complaint of involuntary leakage accompanied by or immediately preceded by urgency.” Overflow incontinence is related to an obstructed urine flow and/or bladder under activity where an individual has a full bladder, but is unable to completely void at time of urination, which later leads to leakage. Functional incontinence, unlike the other forms of incontinence, occurs when an individual has issues getting to the rest room due to an external factor (i.e. dementia, immobility, etc.), but is not associated with urinary tract dysfunction. While these conditions are most commonly found in the senior population, other patients who are much younger may be affected due to neurological diseases like prior

stroke, high body mass index (BMI), recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), and positive metabolic screening, which factors in triglycerides. What actually causes UUI/OAB is unknown, however in patients with this condition, control is not well regulated. The main muscle of the bladder, contracts involuntarily even if the bladder is not full, resulting in the urge to urinate. Your pharmacist can really offer you help in the management of OAB/UUI. We have the ability to explain and discuss with you non-pharmacological interventions and pharmacological therapy. The first-line of therapy is always behavioral intervention, and on that front, pharmacists can provide education and abundant resources for patients to use. Kegel exercises, done daily, can improve symptoms of urinary incontinence within weeks to a few months by building strength in pelvic muscles. Counseling can be provided to explain these exercises and how to do them. Pharmacists can also provide a medication review and identify medications that could cause or exacerbate urinary incontinence. If pharmacotherapy is warranted, pharmacists can assist in product selection based on age, adverse drug events profile, dosage form, dosage adjustments, and cost, as well as assess lifestyle and pharmacotherapy adherence on follow-up visits. Pharmacists can provide a vital role in recommending therapy and providing direct care in patients diagnosed with OAB or UUI. Human Remains Found in Richmond Hill A construction crew on Monday afternoon discovered a skeleton in the basement of an abandoned Richmond Hill building on Jamaica Avenue near 120th Street. By Forum Staff After being alerted to the presence of several local retailers selling unlicensed marijuana products, the City Sheriff ’s Office took action last week, levying an array of charges against the operators of three separate businesses in District 32. According to the Sheriff ’s Office, CJJ’s 115 Lounge, Inc. located at 114-30 Rockaway Beach Blvd., Sweet Deli Minimart

Corp. located at 112-30 Rockaway Beach Blvd., and Sand Box Exotic Corp located at 92-09 Rockaway Beach Blvd. were all hit in the recent operation. The first two locations were located less than 600 feet from a church, while the third was less than 200 feet from a public library frequented by children. Feds Begin Investigation into the Rise of Mail Theft in Borough By Forum Staff Congresswoman Grace Meng (DFlushing) announced on Tuesday that the federal investigation into the rise of mail theft in Queens has officially begun. The launching of this audit, which is being conducted by the United States Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General, comes after Meng two months ago convinced the agency to conduct the probe. It will assess the actions that the Postal Service has taken to mitigate and respond to the spike in mail theft throughout the borough. This is the first time that such a probe into Queens mail security has ever been conducted. The Office of Inspector General is an independent entity within the Postal Service. It oversees the integrity and efficiency of the nation’s postal system, ensuring the accountability and transparency of postal operations. “The increase in mail theft continues to plague many local residents here in Queens which is why I’m glad that this audit is now underway,” Meng said. “Hopefully, it will provide answers on how the Postal Service has handled the problem in our borough and whether more can be done to address it. Since 2022, Meng has urged the Postal Service to do more to combat the spike in mail theft in Queens. She sent letters to officials in July and December of that year, and this past August, she partnered with the Postal Inspection Service and police in the borough to advise area residents on how they can help prevent their mail from being stolen. The congresswoman also introduced legislation last year to strengthen the Postal Service’s ability to go after criminal organizations driving the theft of mail. Specifically, the USPS Subpoena Authority Act would strengthen USPS' ability to crack down on criminal organizations driving mail theft through administrative subpoenas. With these subpoenas, USPS could collect more information related to the financial fraud associated with mail theft, including bank records and surveillance videos, to build mail theft cases against criminal organizations that meet prosecutorial thresholds.

Cusenza Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) this week touted the signing of a bill which requires manufacturers of prescription drugs to present notification of any proposed cost increase. The law is set to take effect in the coming months and Pheffer Amato was the prime co-sponsor of this bill. The new legislation requires drug manufacturers to provide at least 60-days’ notice of their intent to raise prescription drug costs. In addition, they are required to provide a rationale to the State Department of Financial Services. “My constituents deserve to know if there is a cost increase of their medication. By doing this we ensure that the consumers are given crucial notice and are able to take any necessary steps prior to the increase. We’re demanding transparency from Big Pharma,” Pheffer Amato said. The bill was supported by several groups including AARP. Similar price transparency laws in other states have led to fewer and lower price hikes, according to the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. AARP and 41 other organizations in November penned a letter to Gov. Kathy

We strongly urge Gov. Hochul—who proposed strong transparency provisions herself that were unfortunately not included in the final budget negotiated with state legislators—to sign this bill to give New Yorkers the same benefits.” The law is set to take effect in the coming months, Pheffer Amato said.

Dems Seek to Remove Citizenship Question from Census By Forum Staff

Congresswoman (D-Flushing) and U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) announced on Monday they are leading efforts to block a renewed attempt by Republicans to include a citizenship question on the Census. In 2018, then-President Donald Trump pushed to add a question on the 2020 Census which would have asked respondents about their citizenship status. Meng and Hirono fought against the plan, and after the Supreme Court blocked it from moving forward, the Trump administration abandoned its crusade. But now House Republicans have attached a measure to a key spending bill that would effectively require the Census Bureau to ask respondents about their citizenship status. In a letter they wrote to congressional leaders, Meng and Hirono urged that the provision be removed from this bill. Meng and Hirono argue that a citizenship question will result in an undercount of immigrant communities out of fear that the information they provide will be used against them. “The GOP hiding their efforts to add a citizenship question to the census in an appropriations bill is reckless and disgraceful,” said Meng, the House Appropriations Committee’s Vice Ranking Member. “This The census is conducted by the federal government every 10 years.

Republicans are pushing their renewed attempt for a citizenship question in the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Act (H.R. 5893) which funds the departments of Commerce, Justice and other science-related programs. The census is conducted by the federal government every 10 years. Cambria Heights Man Charged with Possessing Cache of Ghost Guns, Assault Pistols By Forum Staff Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Wednesday that Lenold Caesar has been arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and other crimes after a search warrant executed at his Cambria Heights home uncovered ghost guns, including assault weapons, as well as silencers and other weapons-related paraphernalia. Caesar, 43, was arraigned Tuesday night on a 33-count complaint charging him with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, eight counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, five counts of criminal sale of a firearm in the third degree, five counts of criminal possession of a firearm, 11 counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and three counts of criminal possession of a rapid-fire modification device. According to the charges: Members of the Queens District Attorney’s office conducted a long-term investigation into Caesar’s purchase of polymerbased, unserialized firearm components, which are easily assembled into operable ghost guns.
