Readers make good leaders

Foundation for the SPL will honor leaders tomorrow night during annual gala

T

hree prominent citizens who through volunteer service have made significant contributions to the betterment of Saugus, along with the president of this year’s Saugus High School senior class, will be

honored tomorrow night (Saturday, Oct. 20) at the Fourth Annual Foundation for the Saugus Public Library (SPL) Gala.

The event, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Saugus Public Library, is the Foundation’s

major fundraiser.

“This is the 20th Anniversary of the new Saugus Library building, and we will have a special door prize to celebrate the occasion,” Foundation for the SPL vice chair Linda Call said.

“We have four wonderful people to be honored this year,” she said, referring to the highlight of the evening.

A main part of the Gala’s program features the recognition of four individuals as this year’s “Readers Make Good Leaders.” During a brief ceremony, they will talk about their favorite books. The awards presentation is designed to celebrate and encourage reading throughout the community.

This year’s “Readers Make Good Leaders” nominees include: Gordon E. Shepard, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War who has spent countless volunteer hours taking care of veterans’ gravesites in Riverside Cemetery.

“Mr. Shepard is a lifelong resident of Saugus and a Vietnam Army veteran. Mr. Shepard has been the driving force for keep-

“Mr. Mazman was an all-star athlete in high school and college years. He took that love of sports, particularly football, and became the President of the Saugus Boosters Club in 1980 and is still at it,” says the foundation’s nomination letter.

“He works all year long to support and honor the athletes participating on the sports teams of Saugus High. Providing financial scholarships to 15 students each year, trophies, banners for sports teams and banquets for all the athletes

Editor’s Note: For this week’s interview, we sat down with three members of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Saugus Public Library (SPL): Edward Jeffrey, president of the foundation’s board; Linda Call, vice president; and John Smolinsky, a longtime member of the board. We asked about the foundation’s history, mission – and tomorrow night’s Fourth Annual Gala – which is the foundation’s signature social and major fundraising event of the year. A farewell planned for Rev. Martha A farewell lunch is planned for Rev. Martha Leahy of the First Congregational Church UCC in Saugus Center on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church hall (300 Central St.). Sandwiches and coffee will be served. Folks in town who want to say their farewells to Rev. Martha are welcome.

Rev. Martha has been a key person in the community – particularly the faith community – since she was called to Saugus in 2008. She currently serves as leader of the Saugus Faith Community, and her departure will be a huge loss for the town until others step up to fill the void. On Nov. 11, Rev. Martha plans to retire and move to Maine with her husband.

Sachems regroup to defeat Winthrop, 20-14

laying some stingy red zone defense and showing a lot of resiliency after losing big the week before, the Saugus Sachems pulled off a lategame comeback win over the Winthrop Vikings last Saturday in the rain at Stackpole Field.

With Saugus trailing 1412, running back Marvens Jean closed out a huge day with a six-yard touchdown in the final quarter to get the Sachems over the hump with 2:22 left on the clock.

pass, and Saugus had a 2014 lead. That’s how it ended when James Moise intercepted a Winthrop pass on fourth down to ice the victory.

It was an important win emotionally for the Sachems, who were coming off a 61-15 drubbing at the hands of a very tough Gloucester team the previous week. Saugus interim head coach Mike Mabee told the press after Saturday’s game that his team’s offensive line came up big in helping Jean ramble for 164 yards on 17 carries, including the gamewinning touchdown in the final minutes.

“It starts up front. The O-line played awesome, setting holes for [Jean],” he said. “[Jean] really got going, making some good reads. He’s tough to take down once he gets going.”

Nickolas ran it in from four yards away to tie the game, 6-6.

The Sachems then went into halftime with a 12-6 edge after Jean exploded through an opening and dashed 63 yards for the first of his two TDs. A touchdown and two-point play gave the Vikings a 14-12 lead early in the fourth quarter before the home team was able to rally for its second W of the season.

The Sachems’ defense also stopped Winthrop three times inside the 20 without a score.

Perhaps the most crucial of those defensive stands was when Jean excelled on the defensive end and sacked Vikings’ QB Bobby Hubert on fourth down in the fourth quarter.

That play kept Saugus within two.

and long on Winthrop’s final possession, resulting in Moise’s game-ending interception.

“Jake kept saying to me ‘coach, I’m going to get a sack,’ and in a big spot he came up and made a big play,” said Mabee. “Same with James coming and closing the game.”

Saugus improved to 2-4

with the win and hosts the 5-1 Swampscott Big Blue this Friday night under the lights at Stackpole Field (scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff ). Thus far, Saugus has won both games on its home field this season, but it will take a major effort to knock off playoff-bound Big Blue.

This was the first class of athletes inducted since 2014. Previously, there have been 245 athletes inducted since the Hall of Fame’s inception (1987).

The hall’s first class included Arthur Spinney, a Saugus High football great who played for two NFL championship teams with the Baltimore Colts in 1958 and 1959. A Saugus High athlete has to be out of school for at least 10 years before he or she can be nominated.

2004 after being recognized as an important member of the 1953 championship football team. He also starred in baseball and later coached football for 22 years in Saugus Public Schools. Also on the committee was Stephen Boudreau, a 1965 Saugus High School graduate and track star. He coached basketball at Saugus High for

24 years – 17 years as the junior varsity coach, two years as an assistant and four years as varsity. Last fall he helped his friend Chris Tarantino revive the Cross Country running program at the Belmonte Middle School that Tarantino had coached for 15 years before the program went dormant several years ago.

But the Anderson twins made the most of their High School education and athletic careers.

“We both got full scholarships and we’re still over the moon about that,” Cassandra told The Saugus Advocate.

“I can’t imagine having a better experience than we did at Saugus High. If we went to another [high] school, I don’t think it would have been the same,” said Cassandra, now a marketing manager working at the Timberland shoe company.

The Anderson twins were among 10 former Saugus High sports greats who were inducted last Friday night (Oct. 12) in the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Cassandra starred for four years on the SHS track and field team. Then she went on to star in track at Holy Cross. “I was a member of the 4 by 400 meter relay team at Holy Cross that still holds the school record,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kelsey, who starred in soccer and indoor and outdoor track at Saugus High, went on to become a soccer star at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst.

She currently lives in Portland, Oregon, and was unable to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony held at the Saugus-Everett Elks Lodge #642. But she sent a message expressing her appreciation that was read to the audience of about 200.

In her acceptance speech, Cassandra called it “a true honor to walk the halls of Saugus High.” “I always felt like Saugus High was the reason I got where I am,” she told the crowd.

Others who were honored include: · Members of the 1999 Saugus High hockey team – coached by Lou Finocchiaro – that won the Division 2 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) State Championship.

“It was a magical year. It was just phenomenal to watch it evolve,” Finocchiaro said of his team. “There were no stars on our team. Shawn Sullivan was

Q: How many years has the Foundation been in existence?

Call: At least 10 years.

Q: And over that time, what

would you estimate how much the foundation has funded for library programs, equipment and other things? About how much have you contributed to the betterment of the library?

Jeffrey: Well over $100,000 over the last five years – we’re doing about $25,000 a year now.

Q: So, how significant is the Foundation’s support?

Call: When the library was in dire need and almost got closed, they had a book budget and that was it, so the foundation really stepped up and helped a lot then. That was a little bit before my time. But as a trustee [The SPL Board of Trust-

ees], I remember them helping.

Q: Is it fair to say this place would be closed if it weren’t for the generosity of the Foundation?

Call: No. It would have stayed open. I couldn’t go that far in saying that. But it would have been significantly different.

They had a very, very small salary, a budget and a book budget. And the foundation really stepped up and did a lot to help enhance the library when the budget was very, very thin.

Q: And Saturday night is going to be a very big night?

Call: Yes it is. This is going to be fun. We’ve got about 125 to 150 people coming.

Q: How does that compare to past Galas?

Call: That’s about the same.

We usually have what the library can hold. We might have a little more than that, but right now we’re planning on having about 125. We just sold some more tickets today. So, that’s good.

Q: And what will that raise, about?

Call: Well, it should raise $3,000 to $3,500, something like that. Of course, everything you have when you come in here is free, and we do have 30 prizes that we’re going to give out, and everybody gets a prize if they buy a wine glass.

There are some very nice prizes – gift certificates to local restaurants, and Plimoth Plantation tickets in there and things like that. There are a lot of nice donations.

Q: And there are four individuals that you will be honoring and recognizing.

Call: Yes. We asked for nominations from the board, and these are people who live in the community who we feel should be recognized, and everyone will have a favorite book that informed them, somehow, in their childhood, or young adulthood or even more recently – maybe last week, and we take a picture of them with the book for the individual posters that will be on display.

Q: So, how long has the Foundation been active?

Smolinsky: Since 2003.

We got about $310,000 from one gentleman at the outset.

I think we have probably contributed over $150,000 to the library since our inception.

Q: So, how have things worked out?

Smolinsky: We’d like to work with different organizations, but there seems to be a resistance out there. Everybody wants to remain independent, and I’ve talked to the principal up there, and I know we have talked to the trustees and the Friends, and … And, it’s just a fierce desire to re-

Andrews said he hopes to use some of the money raised this year to help defray the college costs of Wortman’s daughter, Alicia, who wants to become a nurse.

The Haunted House raised about $2,500 last year. Since its inception, the annual Halloween event has raised between $16,000 and $18,000, according to Andrews. In the past, money raised from the Haunted House has been donated to

Andrews – who began dabbling in the Halloween hobby of haunted houses out of the basement of his own home 12 years ago – has been perfecting it every year until the crowds got too big and he and his friends moved into the old Cliftondale schoolhouse, which is owned by the town and leased to the MEG Foundation.

An outlet for High School actors The main ingredient that gives visitors a chilling feeling is the cast of actors from the Saugus High School Drama Club who volunteer to dress up in masks and costumes – many of them from contemporary horror movies.

“I got a kick out of it last year when one girl from the Drama Club was so excited about being in the cast,” Andrews said.

Finding the Founders Here’s an interesting course that will be offered at the library, beginning next month and lasting through next March. Former School Committee member and retired educator Peter Manoogian plans to facilitate a 15-hour seminar on America’s Founding Documents, working with the Saugus Public Library.

“Content will include the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the Federalist Papers and the Constitution,” Manoogian wrote in a summary of the seminar.

“This will not be a lecture based seminar, rather it will be based on individual reading and small/whole group guided inquiry and discussion,” he wrote.

Malden, Saugus Pioneer Charter School of Science students recognized in National Merit Scholarship Competition

T

hree students from Pioneer Charter School of Science II (PCSS) have been recognized in the National Merit Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. Nolan Moy of Saugus and Manan Bajaj of Malden both advanced as Semifinalists in the competition, and Jack Blake of Saugus was recognized as a Commended Student.

The 2018 competition has 16,000 Semifinalists who will have an opportunity to continue to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million.

More than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered this year’s competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

“We take pride in our students’ success and they continue to amaze us every day,” said PCSS II Executive Director Vahit Sevinc.

to study Computer Science at their dream school: MIT. Commended Student Jack Blake has his eye on Brown University, where he’d like to pursue Psychology or English.

Household Hazardous Waste Day coming Residents are invited to dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally responsible manner during a collection event on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at Saugus High School.

The rain-or-shine event will allow residents to dispose of a series of household waste products, including rubber cement, airplane glue, fiberglass resins, aerosol cans, photo chemicals, furniture polish, floor and metal polish, oven cleaner, drain and toilet cleaner, spot remover, rug and upholstery cleaner, hobby and artist supplies, photography chemicals, turpentine and chemistry sets.

Interested residents should preregister for this free event in order to reduce any wait time.

You may preregister by contacting Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator Lorna Cerbone at 781231-4036 or visiting the Solid Waste/Recycling Department located at 515 Main St. Residents may also visit the Inspectional Services Department located at the lower level of Town Hall or call 781-231-4115. Proof of residency is required to par-

ticipate in this event.

The following garage supplies will also be accepted: fuel, gasoline, kerosene, engine degreaser, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, transmission fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, car batteries, antifreeze, cesspool cleaners, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, motor oil and car batteries.

Accepted workbench waste includes oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, paint strippers or thinners, solvent adhesives and lighter fluid. Residents may also bring the following yard waste: weed killer, chemical fertilizers, flea control products, mothballs, poisons, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.

Residents are urged to take caution when transporting household hazardous materials. Locals may do so by keeping the materials in their original containers, tightening caps and lids, sorting and packing products separately and packing containers in sturdy upright boxes padded with newspaper. Please remember never to mix chemicals and never to smoke while handling hazardous materials.

The hazardous household waste collection will not accept commercial waste. Residents will be limited to two car-loads, the equivalent of 50 pounds or 50 gallons, of hazardous waste.

It’s not that what they’re doing is wrong. It’s just getting them to understand that we’re existing because this gentleman bequeathed the money to start the Foundation. We didn’t start the Foundation to compete with the Friends or to stay out of the reach of the trustees. It was the way it was bequeathed, and that’s the way it had to be set up, so it’s just getting people to understand the purpose of the Foundation is to perpetuate the library and to bring people to the library for the benefit of the community as a whole. The more people are able to give to us – and it’s a 501 (c) (3); it’s a charitable donation – and it will just help perpetuate the whole library.

It started with a gentleman who said “I’m giving you 10 percent of my assets upon my death.”We actually had to form the Foundation before he gave us the check, so we actually had to go to the Secretary of State, and then he wrote the check for the foundation.

Q: So, the focus for Saturday night – this is the 4th annual Gala.

Call: It’s going to be a great night, and one of the nicest things that’s said around here is that the library is such an amazing place at night, with the music and so many people in it, and people just enjoy looking out the windows, out over the town center. It’s just a nice night for everyone. No pressure, and there are a lot of Saugonians coming back and getting together and see-

ing old friends. We get some of the younger crowd coming in now, too, which is nice – younger people.

Smolinsky: It’s a good public relations opportunity to raise awareness about the foundation, and everything we do is to make people’s visit to the library more aesthetically pleasing and more enjoyable. With genealogy and the website that we help with – the Children’s Room that we help with – to make the library more comfortable, more warming, more embracing and more welcoming in many ways.

The Gala, in my mind, Mark, is much as giving something back as asking to give to us. It’s “Hey, let’s tell you who we are.

Let’s talk about what we do.”

Q: It’s really a celebration of the library.

Call: Yes. It really is a celebration, and this is the 20th Anniversary of this building this year. They demolished the old library, and it’s been 20 years now in this building. That’s why we are having a little door prize to celebrate, which we usually don’t do; that’s what we are doing this time. And actually, it is just about celebrating the library and celebrating reading.

That’s our main focus here.

Smolinsky: It’s basically a break-even event for us. The idea is to bring people in, and we’re doing something that highlights the library and increases awareness about the Foundation. Socially, it’s something that we all get to enjoy on a special night.

Q: And people who have not yet bought their tickets can still come in at the door?

Call: Oh yes, they can.

Q: For $30 a head?

Call: It’s $35 at the door, but

if they give us 30 bucks, we’ll take it! It was $30 in advance.

If somebody gives us just $30, we’re not going to say “Give us $5 more.”

Q: So, what would you consider, looking back over the history of the foundation, the greatest accomplishment or contribution that the foundation has made?

Call: I think our greatest accomplishment is, actually, when we do the Gala – the people who we have picked [for “Readers Make Good Leaders”] are kind of unsung heroes that are just there all of the time, and giving them that recognition is great.

And seeing what the greatest book they ever read is or them explaining how it influenced them is so interesting, and, actually, we’ve learned from that.

When Ann Hadley goes out and takes a picture and talks to them about the book that they picked, it has such great meaning to them, and, it’s very, very moving, really.

We’ve bought things and done things, but I think the Gala showcases the library and it’s a great social event, and we get a lot of satisfaction from it.

We do, and we’ve met a lot of nice, very nice people.

Smolinsky: My favorite event at the library is when we had Ed’s [Jeffrey] brother [Ambassador Jim Jeffrey, a 1964 graduate of Saugus High School], who was ambassador a few years ago, and he gave an absolutely fascinating talk and discussion. So, I think we have delivered on many different levels back to the community.

We hope that those who have not experienced this wonderful evening will come this year as it is a great time to see many old friends and celebrate our wonderful library.

To offset food insecure households, Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus will provide a weekend’s supply of nutritious food for each eligible child when school lunches and breakfasts are unavailable to them on weekends or school holidays during the school year.

Take-home grocery bags will contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, one can of vegetables and one can of fruit.

All food will be nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. If additional food

is needed for extended family members, it will be provided. It is our hope these resources will support the health, behavior and achievement of every student who participates.

Parents will apply for the program by filling out a simple consent form.

The program will be run by the school department’s current food service provider, Whitsons, and the many wonderful volunteers who will be packing the food bags. On Thursdays, Whitsons will deliver food and grocery bags to each volunteer site, where the bags will be packed, then picked up by Whitsons on Fridays and delivered to the schools for students to take home. The Tax Credit That Lets You Double-Dip on Retirement Savings

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about the retirement saver’s tax credit?

At age 60, I’m looking for ways to boost my retirement savings beyond my 401(k) plan and have heard this may be a smart way to do it. Is this something I’m eligible for?

Need to Save Dear Need, If your income is low to moderate and you participate in your employer-sponsored retirement plan or an IRA, the “Saver’s Credit” (also known as the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit) is a frequently overlooked tool that can help boost your retirement savings even more. Here’s how it works.

If you contribute to a retirement-savings account like a traditional or Roth IRA, myRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457, federal employees’Thrift Savings Plan, Simplified Employee Pension or SIMPLE plan, the Saver’s Credit will allow you to claim 10, 20 or 50 percent of your contribution of up to $2,000 per year for singles or $4,000 for couples.

This valuable tax credit can be claimed in addition to the tax deduction you get for saving in your traditional retirement accounts.

To qualify, you must also be at least 18 years old and not a full-time student and were not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. And your adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2018 must have been $63,000 or less as a married couple filing jointly, $47,250 or less if filing as head of household, or $31,500 or less if you’re a single filer. These income limits are adjusted annually to keep pace with inflation.

To get the 50 percent credit, you’ll need to have an income below $19,000 if you’re single, $28,500 if you’re filing as head of household, and $38,000 for couples in 2018.

The 20 percent credit rate applies to individuals earning between $19,001 and $20,500; for head of household filers it’s $28,501 to $30,750; and for couples it’s $38,001 to $41,000.

And the 10 percent rate is for individuals with an adjusted gross income between $20,501 and $31,500; for head of household filers $30,751 to $47,250; and couples it’s between $41,001 and $63,000.

Here’s an example of how this works. Let’s say that you file your taxes as head of household and your AGI for 2018 is $30,000. Over the course of the year, you contribute $2,000 to your employer’s 401(k) plan. Since your AGI puts you in the 20 percent credit bracket, and you’ve contributed the $2,000 maximum that can be considered for the credit, you are entitled to a $400 Saver’s Credit on your 2018 tax return.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Saver’s Credit is in addition to any other tax benefits you get for your retirement contributions. So in the previous example, not only would you be entitled to a $400 credit, but you would also be able to exclude the $2,000 401(k) contribution from your taxable income. So, if you’re in the 15 percent tax bracket, this translates to an additional $300 in savings, for a total of $700.

How to Claim To claim the Saver’s Credit, you will need to fill out Form 8880 (see IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8880.pdf) and attach it to your 1040, 1040A or 1040NR when you file your tax return. Don’t use the 1040EZ Form.

If you think that you would have qualified for the credit in previous years but didn’t claim it, you can file an amended return as far back as 2015 and still get the credits. A 2014 amended return is due by April 15, 2019. See IRS Form 1040X (IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf) for instructions on how to file an amended return.

The Boy with a Dream It all started as a young kid from Everett taking apart my bikes, painting and putting them back together. At 16 years-old before I even got my driver’s license, I purchased my first car; a 1969 Caddy 4-door sedan with wide gangster white walls and chromed spoke rims. It needed some bodywork and a paint job but I knew from all those years of experience with my bikes that I was up for the challenge. That is when it became clear to me where my future was headed.

In May of 1979 I graduated Pope John XXIII High School focusing mostly on Business Management. I owe a lot of credit to Pope John; they had great teachers, all that inspired me in some way shape or form, but three of which stuck out the most in my mind were Sister Peggy, Sister Lorraine and Sister Nancy. They all watched me go through a struggle in my life losing my mother at the age of nine and being brought up by a single dad; but they never allowed me to fail, always going out of their way to help me out. Sister Peggy was like the mother I lost from above and she did everything she could to help guide me in the right direction. To this day, I am extremely close to them all and visit on a monthly basis.

After graduation in 1979, I went to Rhode Island Trade Shop School in Providence. Every single day for nine months I drove from Mass. to Rhode Island, all while holding down 1-2 part time jobs in between. The days were extremely long and hard. In October of 1979, I decided to set up a business before I graduated. I rented a building in Chelsea and repaired cars on the weekends. My dream was now becoming a reality with the sole purpose of making my parents proud.

In the summer of 1980, I found a shop in Malden thanks to my good friends Mike Tamagna and Paul DiPietro of Tamanga DiPietro Electrical. They rented a building from Sam DeMarco on Maplewood Street and they asked Sam if he would like to rent space to me. Sam worked on the building for five months turning it into a three-bay garage just for me. At that time I felt like I was on top of the world. I was there for around five years and after expanding the shop twice, I knew a bigger space was needed and decided to move on.

I found a 10 bay shop that I rented on Franklin Street in Malden. I stayed at that location for six years until the building was sold. The sale was devastating as I had very little time to find another location. My best friend, John MacMillan, a mechanic who worked with me on Franklin Street decided to approach another local businessman, Donald Adelman, owner of Commonwealth Lumbar at 388 Eastern Ave in Malden and together we negotiated a lease. It was basically an empty shed but being under the gun to find a new location quickly, we decided to take a risk. We started from scratch 60 days and 60 nights while running the regular business. With the help of many close friends donating their time we built an incredible 18-bay shop with all new offices and all new equipment. In 60 days we conquered our dreams.

In 1999, I was approached by Joe Laham, the owner of North Shore Motors dealership on Broadway. Joe told me he heard that I was a good businessman in Malden and he offered me an opportunity to lease his body shop. At that time his shop was the biggest in Malden at 8900 sq. ft. with 25 bays, 2 spray booths and 3 frame machines. This was a great opportunity and my big chance to be on Broadway in Malden, but the timing couldn’t be worse as I was literally getting on a plane and leaving for vacation. He needed an answer right away and I told him I would call him from my vacation in three days with an answer. After the three days were up, I called Joe and told him I would take it. The lease was for five years with a five-year renewal option. Needless to say, I did not sleep the rest of my vacation. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

When I came back from vacation I took on another two month project setting up the shop on Broadway. This time I had the master help me, Jerry Bartolo, my father. I told him I would get him some help and he had the place cleaned up and painted. I brought in my good friends Tamagna and DiPietro Electrical to wire the new shop for equipment and offices. I was now the largest shop in Malden. I had approximately eight guys on the floor, two office staff and myself. I would look through my office glass window above one end of the shop and think how proud I was of how far I had come. Eleven years later, the dealership had changed hands three times and was not doing well. I decided it was time to start over. I told myself enough is enough it’s time to buy my own building.

During my years in business I became very involved with the civic community in Malden. I became a member of the Malden Kiwanis Club, served on the Board of Directors for 10 years in the Malden Chamber of Commerce as well as serving as Vice President and then President. I am very proud to be part of sponsoring and donating to a room dedicated to the Hallmark Health Cancer Center in Stoneham along with the Malden Chamber of Commerce. Therefore, it was extremely important that my business stayed in Malden as it had become Tony’s Auto Body LLC’s home. I looked for many months and finally came across a 5,000 square foot building on Sharon Street off of Eastern Ave. It was a warehouse building but I was once again determined. I worked extremely hard to get all my licensing and permits. Thanks to being a good business man with a good reputation in Malden for many years I got a lot of support from the Planning Board and my lawyer, Atty. Christopher Fallon.

I started the process in November of 2007 and passed papers on my building in February of 2008. Now the real work would once again begin with the set up. It was a complete gut out with engineering putting on an addition for spray booths and an office and then transferring all my equipment to my new building while never skipping a beat. May 19th of 2008 it happened, the grand opening.

On October 3rd 2018, I will be in business 40 years. I am now 57-years-old and I fulfilled my dream knowing my parents are looking down at me and are very proud of me and what I have accomplished in my life.

I want to thank the City of Malden for letting me serve their great community. I am looking forward to many more years to come serving in this great city.

To close in this story, I would have to say always treat every customer the way you would want to be treated and remember my favorite words is “to believe and never stop dreaming of what you want in life”.

This story is dedicated to my mother and father Rose and Jerry Bartolo. Thank you for always believing in me and guiding me through life.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
