ongtime Everett football coach John DiBiaso announced at a press conference at Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury, Boston Thursday that he would be taking a position at the school as their football coach and associate athletic director.

Residential Parking Stickers for 2018 are now available

ayor Carlo DeMaria and the Office of the Parking Clerk would like to notify residents to obtain their residential parking stickers.

Vehicle owners must visit the website https://everettparking.cityhallsystems. com and submit an online application in order to receive their stickers. Once the online application is complete, stickers will then be mailed directly to the resident. A link to the parking sticker website will also be available on the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official website, cityofeverett. com, as well as on the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Facebook Page.

As a courtesy, from January 2 to February 28, stickers may still be obtained for FREE. Then, beginning March 1, the $10 per sticker fee will be reinstated.

Residents may apply for up to four stickers per online application. Information required to complete the application includes name, address (include floor number and apartment number, if applicable), license plate number, the name that appears on the registration, email address and phone number. Please make sure any prior parking violation fees and excise tax are fully paid prior to submitting an application. Once a resident has successfully submitted an application, the resident will receive an email notification of the order. Upon verification of his or her information, the resident will then receive an additional email as confirmation that the order has been successfully processed. The parking sticker will then be mailed to the resident.

The process for obtaining visitor placards will remain the same. Anyone wishing to request a visitor placard must do so in person at the Parking Clerk's Office at City Hall. Visitor placards are required for any visitors of Everett residents who wish to park overnight on the streets of Everett. Visitor placards cost $5 for a onenight pass, $10 for a seven-day pass, $15 for a 14-day pass, $20 for a 21-day pass and $25 for a 30-day pass.

In order to obtain a visitor placard, a resident must show proof of residency. Residency can be established with a Massachusetts driver's license, utility bill or lease. The license plate number of the visitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle must be provided at time of request. The visitor placard shall be displayed on the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side of the dashboard, clearly visible through the windshield.

The epitome of the American Dream Local businessman, civic leader Frank J. Mastrocola laid to rest at 92

T

his past week, the Mastrocola family lay to rest their patriarch, Frank Mastrocola, a successful local businessman and longtime civic leader, following a long and fruitful life, at 92–years-old.

Surrounded by his loving family, wife of 69 years, Gloria, and his children, Mr. Mastrocola passed on January 12 at the Leonard Cohen Estates in Chelsea.

On Wednesday, his son, Frank Mastrocola, Jr. read his eulogy fitting for a Hollywood screenplay with heroic war battles fought in the trench-

es of WWII, hard work, unbridled optimism, and deep-rooted family pride.

Frank, one of seven siblings, was born to parents Rocco and Maria in their home near the tracks on Parlin Street in Everett, raised on the value of hard work from his mason father, living by what Frank, Jr. called “profound maxims” heard around the family home: “He who sleeps, catches no fish” or “no man is an island” – that one lives in a community with others, connected by family, love, and God. Growing up in the loving family home, now located across from the Mandolese’s Bakery on Ferry Street

with his three brothers and three sisters, Mr. Mastrocola would grow up fast going from playing fullback on the undefeated 1943 Everett High School football team to the beaches of Okinawa as a member of the US Marine Corps 1st Marine Division where tragedy struck the family when his brother, Peter was killed in a kamikaze attack offshore.

According to his son, “His time with the First Marine Division, fighting some of the war’s longest and worst battles, had a lasting and positive impact on who he would become. If there ever was a character building experience, he got it in the Pacific. At 18-years-old, he reached

down deep and found out what he was made of. He knew who he was; and, he knew almost anything was possible.”

Upon his return following the war, Mr. Mastrocola married his longtime sweetheart, Gloria Pierotti, and began his domestic and professional life as founding president of Master Fuel Co., delivering oil heat and heartwarming relationships to his customers for 30 years.

At the age of 54 he sold the oil company business and founded Travel Master, Inc. which he ran for a decade before retiring.

Accepting his responsibility with total dedication, Mr. Mastrocola, recalled by his son, when the phone rang in the middle of the night, he got out of bed and went. My mother would say,“Don’t go”– but he would reply, “I have to.”

With an overwhelming lifelong sense of community pride in Everett, Mr. Mastrocola served along with his brothers, Vinny and Ron in the Kiwanis Club of Everett as a distinguished past president and board member.

According to his son, Frank, Jr.,“He believed in getting involved and giving back; he accepted every invitation to chair a committee, to organize, to lead numerous civic groups and organizations in the city. He was always giving his time to help one group or another.”

So many local businesses, educational, civic, fraternal, and church organizations were the recipient of his endless time, money, and concern.

A longtime member of the St. Anthony’s Church Parish, Mr. Mastrocola was an usher for the Sunday 9 AM Mass.

Despite the backlash from a competitor, I found myself sitting at a table in the Parish Hall Church on Broadway with many Everett business leaders as a guest speaker of the Everett Kiwanis, which is where I soon discovered many of the city’s most successful and outspoken members of the business community. Many who are still my friends and fellow Kiwanians to this day.

Everett, proud to be Haitian-American Dear Editor, Everett, Happy New Year!

For 2018, I pray that this year be filled with God’s love, prosperity and good health for each one of you.

In 2017, a year filled with many surprises in politics, we are still in need of good representation throughout our government. We need leaders who embody our values, our hearts, and our passions.

Not just individuals looking to gain notoriety and influence. However, last week, within the first weeks of our new year, we were told by the media news outlets that our President stated some disparaging and egregious comments in a meeting with many witnesses there to recount what happened.

As many of you know, my parents were born in Haiti – a country with a

rich history of being the first colony with African slaves to gain their independence. My great-grandfather was a senator in Haiti. My great-uncle who was an excellent student in the country of Haiti was recruited to attend Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His academic pursuit was the catalyst of the Adrien family, leaving Haiti to come to the United States of America to do the same, and pursue the American Dream. My parents moved to Everett in 1995 to purchase their first home, in Ward 4. They worked hard, became proficient in English, had three children, went to church every Sunday and was involved in the community. My accomplishments are attributed to my parents, instilling in me the values of hard work and kindness.

In early 2017, I received a new opportunity to work at Boston Medical Center in the Hematology-Oncology Department. I help clinical doctors and researchers find cures or remedies for blood-related, cancer and sickle cell-related diseases. I am also now a candidate for a Masters of Business Administration at Boston University, where I am focusing on Finance and Health Sector Management. I won my first MBA case Competition in Maryland in my first semester. I still give back, and my faith is stronger than ever.

I am very proud of my parents and my entire family’s background.

I am a PROUD Haitian-American. I will never regret my history. I hope that the president grows to understand that Haiti is a fantastic country, who has fallen through hard times, like many countries in the world.

However, we are great people who believe in hard work, kindness and have hearts filled with love. We will overcome!

Please get to know us and our story. Talk to us. Walk with us. Listen to us. As for our government representation in 2018, please listen to all of us and learn more about our questions, concerns, needs and joys.

You represent us. And, we need you standing up for us.

Mayor announces Roadmap to Recovery drop-in nights

n January 2, during his Inaugural Address, Mayor Carlo DeMaria emphasized his greatest concern, which is the opioid crisis that our country is facing today. He passionately addressed the audience and said that he will not sit idly by and watch another person die through no fault of their own.

Mayor DeMaria announced that his administration has established a Roadmap to Recovery program. As part of that program, the DeMaria administration will start dropin nights, which will be held on the fourth Thursday of every month from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., starting on January 25.

The Roadmap to Recovery Drop-in Nights will take place at the Connolly Center. The dates are listed below: • January 25 • February 22 • March 22 • April 26 • May 24 • June 28 • July 26 • August 23 • September 27 • October 25 • December 27 Mayor DeMaria stated, “We know that thousands of people, young and old, are dying every day. For the second year in a row, our life expectancy as Americans has dropped – this type of drop was last seen in the 1960s. And the reason is opioid overdoses. This is unacceptable.”

The City of Everett is committed to improving the health and safety of all residents combating the disease of addiction. Last February, Mayor DeMaria hired the City of Everett’s first-ever Substance Abuse Clinician, Tori Cyrus. Since that time, she has been working with the Fire and Health Departments as well as other city agencies in assistance with the

substance abuse epidemic.

The DeMaria Administration has also the integrated the national Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) model into overall prevention systems by hiring a Program Coordinator to oversee and coordinate grant-supported programming in youth prescription drug misuse prevention. The coordinator, Paul Guarino, is paid through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH). Guarino works out of the Health Department and focuses on implementing lo-

hrough a video chat, Halina Peabody spoke to Taylor Leo’s class recently, relaying her story of her time during the Holocaust in Poland. She is now 85, but experienced much struggle as a young girl. For 45 minutes she spoke of being separated from her father and left alone with her mother and sister to try to escape persecution from the Nazis. She became a refugee fighting to stay alive throughout the war, in hiding with false documents as a Catholic. She successfully escaped, but not before a bomb fell on the house where she was hiding, permanently injuring her hand. At the end of her discussion, she opened up a question and answer session to the students when they were able to ask about her life today and certain emotions she had been feeling then and now.

According to Taylor Leo, what prompted this meeting was the unit the Parlin 8th graders were studying. For the past month and a half, the students have learned about the history and background of the Holocaust. They have been reading “The Diary of Anne Frank,” which has greatly intrigued them, and they were very excited to be able to speak with Halina Peabody.

Everett earns pivotal NEC win vs. Malden, then takes down Cathedral, 75-52

T

he Everett boys’ basketball team picked up where they left off with Malden in the Greater Boston League: as the winning side.

Everett beat down on Malden last Friday night, capturing a 63-43 victory for their seventh win of the season.

Ghared Boyce, Isaiah Likely, and the Crimson Tide offense weren’t as prolific at usual but nevertheless controlled the game and rarely faltered.

Boyce ended the game with 20 points while Likely chipped in 15.

The victory holds large implications for both teams in the Northeast Conference.

Malden and Everett entered Friday’s games with similar records. The Golden Tornadoes were 6-2 while Everett was 6-1, as Friday’s tilt could end up playing a factor in post-season seeding.

he Everett girls’ basketball team is back at .500 after beating Malden, 55-33, last Friday night for its fourth win of the season.

Everett maintained control throughout the game, starting off on a 7-0 run and never looking back. Senior Yasmeen Guerrier led Crimson Tide scoring with 17 points and was

a fixture on offense throughout the night.

Everett took a 19-6 lead into the second quarter and were up 37-15 at the half.

Though the Crimson Tide relaxed their offensive muscles in the third, they nevertheless continued to outscore the Golden Tornadoes 10-6.

The Crimson Tide’s next game is at home on Friday against Winthrop.

Just looking at him, you knew he was a man who had lived a life straight from a Hollywood movie – a neighborhood kid who came from a proud and loving home, the star fullback, the tough Marine who witnessed the horrors of war for his country, a man who would return home to raise a family and start two successful businesses, all the while giving back to his community – the city which gave him his start. The epitome of the American Dream–the life of a true hero – the life of a great American.

DiBiaso is Everett High School’s athletic director, head football coach and head basketball coach. He has been coaching the Crimson Tide since 1992 and has won 12 Super Bowls, including one last December in a 35-10 victory over Xaverian at Gillette Stadium.

Shortly after the Super Bowl, DiBiaso announced he would step down from his numerous roles at Everett High School at the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year. Both The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald covered the news extensively – and rightly so – though both characterized DiBiaso’s decision as a retirement.

In a since-deleted announcement on Twitter, sports reporter Mike Lynch of WCVB Channel 5 said on January 16 that DiBiaso would take over coaching at Catholic Memorial. Prior to

DiBiaso’s coaching record is 304-75-1 – a winning percentage just over 80. It is the thirdbest in Massachusetts history.

His résumé also includes stops at St. Patrick’s and Weston.

DiBiaso took over the Everett coaching gig in 1992. With him at the helm, the Crimson Tide have never had a losing season.

They secured 18 Greater Boston League titles (the GBL is now part of the Northeastern Conference) and 12 Division 1 Super Bowl titles.

DiBiaso will replace interim Catholic Memorial Coach and former New England Patriots lineman Brent Williams.

According to school officials, DiBiaso is eligible for a full pension from Everett when he retires at the end of the year.

Good MorningIt’s a pleasure to be here this morning to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. I want to begin by thanking Bishop Brown and everyone at Zion Church Ministries for putting together such a wonderful event today. I also want to thank all of you, for the work you do to help those less fortunate.

This past year we celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the City of Everett. The City and the First Everett Church of the Zion Ministries have evolved together. In 1893, the Town of Everett became the City of Everett.

Just two short years after that, in1895, the First Everett Church was built. As we have grown as a community, and a Congregation, we have always welcomed people from all

cultures and nationalities.

That is our strength. By embracing and assisting our all members of our multi-cultural community, we flourish together.

As I Iook out here today, I see a living legacy of Doctor King, a truly multi-ethnic congregation.

To quote Doctor King, “a place where no one is treated like a second-class citizen, a place where all of our children can grow and play and achieve together, a place where the content of our character truly outweighs the color of our skin”.

Today, we are recognizing the good work of others in our community and the efforts of our young people to fulfill Doctor King’s dream. He would be proud.

May you and everyone here today continue the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. Continue to embrace those different from you, continue to help those less fortunate and continue to work hard, no matter how difficult it may seem.

As Dr. King said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in the moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Over five decades have passed since Dr. King’s voice cut through the silence. But, his words still ring true in our ears, possessing a power and influence, unmatched in our time.

THE HOUSE AND HOUSE: There were no roll calls in the House and Senate last week.

This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports on the number of times each representative sided with Gov. Charlie Baker on his 179 vetoes of items in the 2017 session.

A two-thirds vote is required to override a gubernatorial veto. In a full 160-mem-

ber House, there were 125 Democrats and 35 Republicans. The governor needed the support of 54 representatives to sustain a veto when all 160 representatives voted — and fewer votes when some members were absent, or a seat was vacant.

It was mostly the 34 GOP members who voted with the Republican governor to

sustain the vetoes. Minority Leader Brad Jones (R-North Reading) and Rep. James Lyons (R-Andover) both voted with Baker 100 percent of the time. The GOP member who supported Baker the least number of times was Rep. David Vieira, who sided with the governor only 83 times (68.5 percent).

The other nine representatives who supported the governor did so only on one veto each (less than 1 percent).

Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible latenight sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.
