tors of the Everett Chamber of Commerce to discuss the contentious issues surrounding the city’s tax rate. “2018 ended roughly for us,� he said during the Jan. 17 meeting. The city’s tax rate for fiscal year 2019 has been set at $12.38 per $1,000 for residential properties and $35.27 per $1,000 for Commercial/Industrial/Personal (CIP) properties. DeMaria said the tax rate continues to reflect a CIP shift of 175 percent. The mayor also called attention to the Everett Public Schools.“The schools have been an issue, they’re overspending,� he said, adding that he would need to cut personnel in City Hall to generate additional funding – “The only place I can cut is people.� In addition, he said the schools are overcrowded with 8,000 students.“That’s a serious problem,� said DeMaria. He also said crafting the city’s $196.4 million operating budget was strictly business and that he carries no ill will against any individuals or departments.“I proposed a budget of things I think
