The amendment’s approval ushers in a major zoning change to the parkway area that city officials will hope will begin a transformation south of Revere Beach Parkway, discouraging further industrial development while encouraging large, mixed-use developments.

Obviously, Stephen “Stat� Smith doesn’t give a darn what outsiders think of Everett; if the ballot thief cared about the reputation of the city’s politics, along with the bad press the city gets, he would have folded his tent. In two of the other local papers, Smith says he’s “The People’s Choice� for State Rep. But Smith wasn’t thinking about the people when he made the choice in two Rep. elections with an absentee ballot scheme that hurt a lot of voters and pols. He’s not only a ballot thieff but a hypocrite who thinks he can fool the people into thinking he’s someone special. Just think, Stephen “Stat� Smith if Smith claims he’s for the people then why doesn’t he have a union “bug� on his political handout. After a five year absence from politics ordered by the Federal Court, he has the unmitigated gall to say he’s “The People’s Choice� on his handout card. He should be ashamed, but Smith has shown he has no shame. He’s just plain arrogant. To think that stealing absentee ballots to get elected is making him “The People’s Choice� is delusional. Don’t let him fool you. Smith is for Smith. Why waste a ballot voting for an absentee ballot thief? Why would a voter give Smith any consideration after he pled “Guilty� to all government charges and was told to resign from his Rep. seat? Smith has shown he’s a political predator preying on the elderly with phony absentee ballots to get elected. As the Boston Herald’s Howie Carr said in a recent column about Smith running for Rep., Senator Smith is so crooked he needs a corkscrew to get into DiDomenico his pants. On primary election day, September 4, give Announces New Smith a thumbs down. By all means, he’s earned it!

Healthcare for All

By U.S. Congressman Michael E. Capuano here are many opinions on the types of healthcare Americans should have access to. Republicans in Congress believe we’re all on our own. I believe we’re all in this together.

And I firmly believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege.

That’s why I support single-payer healthcare: we need Medicare for all, and we need it now.

Across our district, I’ve seen how important having health insurance is to thousands of people with preexisting conditions.

I’ve seen how thankful so many are for the reforms of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that opened the door to coverage for millions for the very first time. And I’ve seen how much working families rely on our doctors, our hospitals, and our community health centers every day. That’s why I’ve worked so hard to bring home funding for programs like the Boston Public Health Commission’s REACH initiative that supports health education and preventive screenings. That’s why I co-founded the Community Health Centers Caucus in Congress to further support these centers and the work they do through the ACA. I’ve made community health centers a priority, working to secure funding so they could expand and increase services.

Today, all of that progress is under attack. The ACA is being ambushed like never before. Republicans have tried to repeal it. The Justice Department refuses to defend it in court. And President Donald Trump continues to play games and try to sabotage Americans’healthcare rather than work to improve it.

Think about all we would lose if President Trump and the Republicans got their way. We’d go back to an America in which someone could be denied coverage they needed because of a preexisting condition, or where those who could not afford coverage were told they had to get by on their own. That is unacceptable. It would put the health of millions in jeopardy. And I am determined to fight those efforts every step of the way.

But we can go further than just defending the progress we’ve already made. It’s important to think about what comes next. And the next logical step to getting our healthcare system where it needs to be so every American has affordable, quality health care is through Medicare for all. I am a longtime supporter of Medicare for all and have been fighting for it in Congress. With resolve and commitment, I know we can make this important progress.

Every American deserves healthcare. It’s a basic human right.

And as soon as Democrats take back Congress, I know we will be on our way to making it a reality. But I’m not giving up the fight for healthy communities here at home while we wait. I will not rest until we make sure that everyone in our neighborhoods has access to care, because we can’t just say that everyone has a right to health care – we need to take action to make sure that they have access to affordable care.

Together, we can stand up to fight for the ACA and push for Medicare for all. It’s up to us to make sure our values are backed up by action. I’m not going to stop fighting for a healthcare system that is affordable, high quality, and universal. I hope you’ll join me in that fight.

CREATIVE PLACE-MAKING IN EVERETT BRINGS BEAUTY TO BUS STOP he City of Everett and EverettBRT team have launched a place-making exhibition of a flower-bombed bus stop, crafted by Boston Magazine favorite, Krissy Price, of the floral design studio, Pollen.

On August 14th, the City of Everett added a touch of beauty to its recently upgraded bus stop with a “flower bomb” in Everett Square. The flower bomb has been placed at the Chelsea Street stop on Broadway, where the new level-boarding platform was just installed.

On July 17th, the City of Everett became the first city in Massachusetts to install elevated platforms that will make it easier for riders to board buses travelling through one of the busiest corridors in the city. New platforms and ramps installed at two bus stops in Everett Square will enable bus riders with wheelchairs, strollers, or carts to board the bus faster, speeding up commutes for the 10,000 riders on Broadway, the city’s main thoroughfare into Boston.

Mayor DeMaria stated, “Not only are we making transportation in Everett more accessible and comfortable, but we are actually making it a place that is attractive and where people want to be. Hopefully the flower bomb will raise awareness of

our rapid transit system and get more people out of their cars and into public transit.”

This is a part of the pilot program the City of Everett is orchestrating to provide citizens with a firsthand experience of the global phenomenon that

BOSTON-BASED DANCE TEAM NAMED BEST IN THE USA Lil Phunk is the U.S.A. Gold Medalist at the 2018 Hip Hop Dance Championship Competition hunk Phenomenon Dance Complex today announced that Lil Phunk its hip hop dance team of 9 boys and girls ages 7-12, received the gold medal at the 2018 USA Hip Hop Dance Championship, making them the United States junior champions. In addition those same 9 boys and girls were part of Phunk Phenomenon a 33 person mega crew that finished 3rd place in the USA in the mega crew division, receiving the bronze medal. The final event, which was attended by thousands of people was held at the Arizona Grand Resort and Spa, Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday, August 5th.

Lil Phunk moved into the World Hip Hop Dance Championships and placed 6th in the World an event that drew more than 4,000 dancers from 50 countries all vying for the title of World Hip Hop Dance Champion in the junior, varsity, adult and mega crew divisions.

Now in its 16th year, the U.S.A. and World Hip Hop Dance Championships are produced by Hip Hop International. The competition has inspired the MTV show, Randy Jackson presents “America’s Best Dance Crew.”

MAYOR DEMARIA AND EVERETT POLICE HOST 12TH ANNUAL NATIONAL NIGHT OUT ayor Carlo DeMaria and Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie celebrated the 12th annual National Night Out last Tuesday with hundreds of Everett residents.

Before the National Night Out barbecue and party, residents gathered in each ward with their city councilors and members of the police force.

Each group then walked together through Everett to the city’s recreational center, where everyone enjoyed listening to music and eating freshly grilled food.

speeches about the event and the importance of strong relations between the police and community. A few police officers also gave a demonstration showing how they train the dogs of the K-9 division. “By attending this event, Everett residents become more aware of what our police officers – and police dogs – do every day,� said Mayor DeMaria. “National Night Out is both informative and fun for everyone, especially the kids. Every summer, it gets better and better.

Amidst construction boom, sheet metal workers ratify new contract to ensure shared prosperity Contractors reach deal, including higher wage package and improved overtime provisions ORCHESTER, Mass. – Nearly 1,500 striking sheet metal workers who are members of the Boston-based Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 (SMW Local 17) are back at work with their heads held high, having voted to ratify a new contract that will ensure well-deserved wage increases and improved overtime provisions for workers, a key step towards ensuring shared prosperity in the midst of Boston’s building boom.

On Sunday afternoon, SMW Local 17 members voted to ratify a new contract with the Sheet Metal Workers and Air Conditioning Contractors’National Association (SMACNA) on the heels of a successful strike waged to ensure shared prosperity for the benefit of their members and families in the midst of a Boston area building boom. The vote was held during an SMW Local 17 membership meeting at the Boston Teachers Union Hall in Dorchester. Management agreed on Saturday to improve its previous final offer, prompting union members to convene and ratify a contract on Sunday, officially ending their 12-day strike.

The hardworking men and women of Local 17 had been on strike since August 1, 2018, demanding wage increases that keep pace with increasing costs of living and that would recognize the value of their highly skilled, physically demanding la-

bor. The unity demonstrated by the union workers helped lead to a higher wage package and double-time pay in recognition of the sacrifices workers make when they’re away from their families after 10 hours on weekdays and after eight hours on weekends, along with the grueling physical demands of conducting sheet metal work for 10+ hours during freezing New England winters and blistering summer heat.

On Sunday afternoon, the leadership of Local 17 celebrated their success in achieving a fair contract with SMACNA, and emphasized their desire to work productively with the contractor association now that negotiations have ended on a positive note.

“This is a fair contract that will raise standards for our families, for our communities, and for our future,” said SMW Local 17 Business Manager Bob Butler. “We look forward to working productively with SMACNA moving forward to increase opportunities for our members and for SMACNA contractors.”

He continued, “Every day, our members make incredible sacrifices to support the area’s building boom. They work in extreme weather from the blistering heat to the freezing cold, sacrificing their bodies to keep building our city and to ensure the job is done safely and professionally.

On many nights and weekends,

they’re away from their families making sure the work gets done on time. They don’t ask for much in return, just the ability to pay their bills and take care of their families. With this new agreement, we’ll ensure that more hardworking families can retain and achieve the decent, middle-class life that they work so hard for.”

Members expressed their gratitude for reaching a deal that would mean more opportunity for themselves and future gener-

ations of working families.

DEBATE | FROM PAGE 1 Incumbent Joseph McGonagle and challengers Gerly Adrien, a local activist and Finance and Grants Manager at Boston Medical Center, and Stephen “Stat” Smith, who held the 28th Middlesex District seat from 2007 to 2013 before being forced to resign after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts in an absentee ballot voter fraud scheme, fielded questions by moderator League of Women Voters of Newton Sue Flicop. Topics discussed included education, transportation, housing and immigration. On many occasions, the candidates were echoes of one another.

McGonagle spent much of the debate touting his accomplishments as a representative, and the money that he has brought to Everett through earmarks. A self-described third-generation political servant and lifelong Everett resident who served on the City Council prior to his election to the State House in 2013, McGonagle frequently mentioned his experience in his pitch to Everett voters.

“Throughout my tenure as your State Representative, I have worked to ensure that Everett gets the resources and the funding it deserves at the state level,” said McGonagle in his opening remarks.“Serving on the powerful House Committee on Ways & Means … I have secured millions of dollars in earmarks for the City of Everett to benefit the citizens of Everett, and I’m proud to say that by harnessing these funds, we will be making housing more affordable, we are providing more services for the elderly, we are training our growing workforce, we are providing early college credits for our high school students, and much more.”

He stated, “With the political climate we have in Washington, D.C., now, more than ever, we need our public officials to be honest, and someone who you can trust. I have never taken the job of state representative for granted. I have brought honesty, integrity and experience. I will always fight for the funding

“We need someone who’s going to fight on issues, such as housing or jobs, our schools, homeless, the lack of youth opportunities, as well as the rise of health-care costs,” said Adrien.

“I want to bring accountability, transparency and passions for our district. We need long-term solutions. Throughout my life, I have dedicated myself to fighting and insuring that the communities that I serve have better resources for a better life. …

This is not about the selected few here in our community. This is about everybody. We need more and we deserve more.”

Smith, also a life-long Everett resident, called constituent services his strongest suit. “There is no one who will work harder to address problems specific to you. It’s always the little things that have a big impact on people’s lives, and that’s what I’m

The sharpest distinctions came on a discussion about immigration. McGonagle called for the country’s undocumented population to be made residents, but was reluctant to move further on the issue.“President Clinton did it years ago, where he made undocumented people residents of this country,” he said. “We need to push the federal government to push the same policy through. It’s extremely difficult with this president, but that has to happen. I’m not saying citizenship – there’s a path to citizenship – but the right thing to do, however you got here, if you’ve been a productive member of our society, you have a right to be here.

You’re paying taxes, you’re part of our economy, we’re educating your children, then we need to make you residents of this country.”

McGonagle later stated; however, that he is against making Massachusetts a sanctuary state, and announced his opposition to the Safe Communities Act, which would prevent police from asking people about their immigration status, prohibit police in the state from collaborating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and not allow state money or resources to be used to create any registry based on ethnicity, religion or country of origin.

“At this point I’m not in favor of making Massachusetts a sanctuary state,” said McGonagle. “We need to give law enforcement all the tools they need to help combat – we have an issue in the City of Everett, and I don’t want to get too involved in this issue, but we have an issue with gangs. …

She also criticized McGonagle for his mention of gangs, saying that she is “very saddened by this comment. Gangs are not a part of this conversation. We’re not out there wanting to join gangs. As someone who supports immigrants … I’m very sad to hear that.”

Smith stated that while he has “great respect for the immigrants who live here,”he is not in favor of making Massachusetts a sanctuary state. He also stated that he would like to see the federal government“at least have a plan where these people know what’s going on, especially if you take a city like Everett. … It must be terrible to be in the community and not know what’s going to happen from day to day, especially the kids, who have been here since they were two years old, who grew up here, they’re Americans.”

A significant portion of the debate was spent discussing education funding, with the three candidates frequently discussing the recent collapse of a major education bill that many had hoped would fix the chronic underfunding in state aid suffered by the city’s schools for years.

pass in the next legislative session. “Nobody was more disappointed that we couldn’t get that bill passed in our last budget than myself, than the senator, than the superintendent and the mayor,” said McGonagle. “But when you give me the opportunity to go back to the House, we’re going to fight hard to make sure in the next sessions that that formula is changed. We have the moment going forward to change it. I’m very close to those negotiations.”

Adrien criticized McGonagle for not pushing to change the formula earlier, before it became a crisis for the city. “That formula was first created in 1993,” she said. “Both of my opponents have been in the House while this formula was still there and still wrong, while that formula was broken for our city. It is not a formula that is working for cities like Everett.”

Smith agreed that the funding formula for the state was shortchanging cities like Everett and needed to be changed, but he felt that legislators would consider funding schools a “given” and was confident that the issue would be resolved in the next session, “maybe earlier than you think.”

All three candidates stated that they are against raising the cap on charter schools.

On reestablishing capital punishment, Smith and Adrien both stated that they are against the death penalty, but McGonagle stated that he would be open to an exception in cases where a police officer is killed. “I believe that if you kill a police officer, that you should be punished, and the extreme punishment is death,” said McGonagle. “They’re our last line of defense. That’s not an easy vote for me to take, but that’s how I honestly feel.”

Adrien and McGonagle both said that they support same-day voter registration, while Smith said he “wouldn’t have a problem with it” but questioned its utility and said that he hopes that the state is “making sure that everyone that signed up was eligible.”

Adrien and McGonagle also agreed on a proposed plastic bag ban, while Smith said that he had “really never thought about it, to be quite honest” but would “look into the reasons for that. I could be open to that.”

On the underfunding of pensions for government employees, McGonagle said that he would have to speak with Finance Committee to give a full answer; Adrien said solutions need to be found to address a gap, and she suggested looking for instances of fraud abuse to cut costs; and Smith said that

The purpose of the zoning changes is twofold: First, the city is hoping to push industrial properties out of the neighborhood, which under the current zoning the city has very little control over. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Industrial district let just about anything go unless it has noise or a smell, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s particularly harmful to have this

Adrien opposed flat fare increases, but proposed a progressive ticket-pricing system whereby the price of a ride would be income-based. McGonagle stated that he would fight to put the Fair Share Amendment, also known as the Millionaireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tax, back on the ballot. Smith argued for increasing price of the MBTAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weekly pass

On affordable housing, McGonagle touted the passage of a $1.8 billion affordable housing bond bill that he helped to pass at the State House; Adrien called

for the creation of a Community Development Corporation in the city to create more affordable housing; and Smith stated that he wants to increase funding to â&#x20AC;&#x153;maintain and improveâ&#x20AC;? the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current public housing.

The candidates might meet again for a debate on August 20, this time at the Connolly Center from 6 to 8 p.m. All three state representative candidates have been invited to the debate, though it is not yet clear wheth-

er they will all attend. That event will also feature a debate for the 7th Congressional seat between incumbent Michael Capuano and challenger and Boston City Councillor Ayanna Pressley.

The State Primary will be held on Tuesday, September 4. Because there is no Republican running for the seat, the primary will effectively decide who will serve as the 28th Middlesex District Representative in the next session.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to see more things like what the Pioneer is doing at the old Harley-Davidson site, luxury housing, market rate housing. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking for hotels, restaurants.

Under the new zoning, any existing industrial uses would be â&#x20AC;&#x153;grandfathered inâ&#x20AC;? and allowed to continue operating, though changing or expanding those uses will become much more difficult. Conversely, large, mixed-use developments are actively encouraged by the zoning, with any project possessing a retail component of at least 12.5 square feet of retail, office and/or restaurant space per residential unit and more than 50 units being allowed â&#x20AC;&#x153;by right,â&#x20AC;? requiring nothing more than sitting down with the Planning Board at a Site Plan Review meeting.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The intent for zoning changes is to enhance the neighborhood, to enhance the district,â&#x20AC;? said City Planning Director Tony Sousa.

Also allowed â&#x20AC;&#x153;by rightâ&#x20AC;? will be business offices, banks, financial services, research & development facilities (including laboratories), retail, and indoors entertainment under 15,000 sq. ft.

Special permits would be required for commercial parking lots, multifamily developments without retail (provided the development has a minimum density of 50 units per acre), outdoor entertainment venues, hotels, restaurants and any use over 15,000 sq. ft.

Uses prohibited by the zoning include adult entertainment, self-storage facilities (a particularly sore point among residents of the neighborhood), warehouses, truck ter-

minals, fuel stations, auto repair and parts facilities, scrapyards, outdoor manufacturing, smoke shops, tattoo & piercing parlors, gun shops, motels (defined as shortterm rental dwelling where the rooms have outdoor entrances), pawn shops, mobile homes, check cashing businesses, billboards and slaughterhouses.

By right, building height can be up to 85 feet. Anything between 86 and 100 feet high would require a special permit, and nothing over 100 feet will be allowed at all.

Parking requirements will be largely the same, at two spaces required per unit, with the exception of studio units, which will only require one space every two units.

Lyme Disease Transmission and Illness Lyme is spread by the blacklegged deer tick. The longer

the tick is attached to the skin, the greater chance of infection. The tick must be attached for more than 36 hours for infection to occur.

The incubation period ranges from 3-30 days and the most common finding is a ring-like rash. This may be accompanied by a headache, tiredness, fever, muscle pain and chills. If you or a loved one believe that you have been infected by a tick, please call your doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office immediately.

Treatment Individuals treated with the correct antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover completely. Antibiotics typically used include amoxicillin, doxycycline and cefuroxime axetil. People with certain cardiac problems may need intravenous treatment with antibiotics.

CIVICS EDUCATION (S 2631) House 151-0, Senate 37-0, approved and sent to Gov. Charlie Baker a bill that makes changes in the current law that all public schools must provide instruction in American history and civics.

Current law requires that the instruction include the Constitution of the United States, the Declaration of Independence; the Bill of Rights; the state Constitution; local history and government; a program on the correct use and display of the U.S. flag and the importance of participation in the electoral process.

The bill adds several topics that are required to be in the instruction including the function and composition of the branches of local, state and federal government; the roles and responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy; the development of skills to access, analyze and evaluate written and digital media as it relates to history and civics; community diversity and historical trends in voter registration; civic participation relative to disenfranchised voter populations; opportunities to identify and debate issues relative to power, economic status and the common good in democracy.

Other provisions include requiring each public school serving grades eight to 12 to provide at least one student-led civics project for each student; creation of a Civics Project Trust Fund to help further civics education; and requiring the state to provide information to cities and promote youth membership on municipal boards, committees and commissions.

The bill does not include language that the Senate had approved making it mandatory beginning in 2021 that all students complete one student-led civics project after 8th grade in order to graduate.

Education Committee House chair Rep. Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley) said the bill incentivizes the robust implementation of the new civics, history and social science curriculum framework. “It also creates a Civics Project Trust Fund to assist with professional development, collaboration with institutions of higher education and other stakeholder organizations and the creation of a competitive evaluation of student-led civics project for all eighth graders,” Peisch concluded.

Gov. Baker proposed amendments that he said would improve the bill.

“We must be thoughtful as to how we approach the instruction of civics, always ensuring in our classrooms that differing points of view are afforded impartial consideration,” said Baker. “When opposing

positions are raised, our students should be expected to engage in a civil discourse that is both appropriate and respectful.”

Baker continued, “While we want to encourage the development of critical reasoning skills, we would never want students to feel forced to engage in student-led civic projects in the public sphere that advance positions contrary to their personal convictions. Schools, therefore, must make alternative opportunities readily available.”

ANIMAL PROTECTION (S 2646) House 151-0, Senate 37-0, approved and the governor signed into law legislation designed to protect cats and dogs. Provisions double the hit and run penalty for an accident involving cats and dogs; permit animal abuse to be reported by Department of Children and Families, the Department of Elder Affairs and Disabled Persons Protection Commission employees; and add animal control officers as mandatory reporters of child abuse, elder abuse and abuse against disabled persons.

Other provisions require property owners and landlords to check their property for abandoned animals within three days following a foreclosure or termination of tenancy; prohibit the drowning of animals; remove the automatic killing of animals involved in animal fighting and instead provides that animals be evaluated individually for adoption if appropriate.

CLEAN ENERGY (H 4857) House 150-1, Senate 36-0, approved and Gov. Baker signed into law a clean energy bill that increases the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) by 1 percent until the end of 2019, then by 2 percent each year until the end of 2029, and then back to 1 percent indefinitely. The RPS governs the amount of clean energy that utilities must purchase and integrate into the state’s energy system.

Other provisions institute a Clean Peak Standard to pair energy storage with renewable energy in order to make renewable energy available during the most expensive and highest-emitting hours of electricity consumption; require gas utility companies to report annually to the Department of Public Utilities the company’s lost and unaccounted for gas; and establish an energy storage target of 1000 megawatt hours to be achieved by December 31, 2025.

Rep. Tom Golden (D-Lowell), House Chairman of the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy said the bill builds off of last session’s important work of finding affordable solutions to diversify the state’s energy portfolio with large-scale hydropower, offshore wind and energy storage.

“I am particularly proud of the forward-looking measures on energy storage, which include resiliency measures to prepare the state for extreme weather events. And a first-in-the-nation program to combine storage and renewables to deliver clean power into the hours of the day when our electricity is generated by expensive and polluting resources,” concluded Golden.

“Our administration is proud of our nation-leading work on climate change and renewable energy, and we are pleased to sign the clean energy legislation which will help us meet our greenhouse gas reduction goals,” said Baker.

CAP ON WELFARE BENEFIT FOR KIDS (H 4823) House 37-114, Senate 30-7, rejected Gov. Baker’s amendments to a bill that repeals the current law that denies welfare benefits to children conceived while – or soon after – the family began receiving the benefits.

The governor’s amendments still repeal the current cap but would also count adult Supplemental Security Income (SSI) when determining a family’s eligibility for the Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC) program.

Gov. Baker said that this change would align TAFDC with the current eligibility requirements for federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and would treat SSI income the same as income like veteran benefits, retirement income and disability insurance benefits that are already counted in determining a family’s eligibility and benefit level.

“Eliminating the cap without other accompanying changes could have the perverse effect of reducing incentives for TAFDC recipients to get back to work and cause existing inequities in the TAFDC program to persist and expand,” said Baker.

Supporters of the repeal said the law currently denies an estimated 8,700 children in poverty across the state $100 per month in benefits and a clothing allowance of $300 per year. They argued the governor’s amendment would cut benefits for thousands of children with a severely disabled parent.

“We are extremely disappointed that Gov. Baker is holding hostage thousands of children excluded by the Cap on Kids in order to cut benefits for thousands of children with a severely disabled parent,” said Deborah Harris of the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute and Naomi Meyer of Greater Boston Legal Services in a joint statement.

“The welfare family cap is an ineffective policy that harms children and families and does not reflect the values of the commonwealth.

The governor’s amendment is an underhanded maneuver that pits one group of vulnerable children against another.”

The House and Senate sent the bill back to the governor who vetoed it. The Legislature cannot override the governor’s veto because for the rest of year both branches are holding informal sessions that will not act on the veto.

FIRE AND POLICE SMOKING (S 1386) Senate approved 37-0, House approved on a voice vote without a roll call and the governor signed into law an amendment to the 1988 law that prohibits police officers and firefighters from using any tobacco products and results in the automatic firing of anyone who violates the policy. The bill would amend the law to allow a first-time offender to remain on the force if he or she enters a smoking cessation program. If the officer violates the law a second time, he or she would be automatically fired.

Sen. Mike Brady (D-Brockton), the sponsor of the bill, was asked to file this legislation by a constituent. “I have spoken to several public safety personnel about this,” said Brady.

“There have been employees that have been terminated in the past. I believe this is a common-sense approach to give those that put their lives on the line every day a second chance.”

Savvy Senior Retirement Planning Tips for Single Women Dear Savvy Senior, What retirement planning tips can you recommend to single women?

I’m 54 and divorced with a teenage daughter and very little saved for retirement.

Financially Behind Dear Behind, It’s an unfortunate reality, but most single women – whether they’re divorced, widowed or never married – face much greater financial challenges in retirement than men. Why? Because women earn less money – about 80 cents for every dollar that men make, on average, and they have shorter working careers than men due to raising children and/or caring for aging parents. And less money earned usually translates into less money saved and a lower Social Security benefit when you retire.

In addition, women live an average of five years longer than men, which requires their retirement income to stretch farther for living expenses and healthcare costs. And, according to some studies, women tend to be less knowledgeable and more intimidated about financial issues than men, which means they don’t always handle their money as well as they should.

Because of these issues, it’s very important that women educate themselves on financial matters and learn how to save more effectively. Listed below are some tips and resources that may help you.

Start Saving If your employer offers a retirement plan, such as a 401K, you should contribute enough to at least capitalize on a company match, if available. And if you can swing it, contribute even more. By law, you can save as much as $18,500 in a 401(k) in 2018, or $24,500 to those 50 and older, due to the catch-up rule.

If you don’t have a workplace plan, consider opening a Traditional or Roth IRA. Both are powerful tax-advantaged retirement savings accounts that let you contribute up to $5,500 annually, or $6,500 when you’re over 50. And if you’re self-employed, consider a SEP-IRA, SIMPLE-IRA and/or a solo 401(k), all of which can help reduce your taxable income while putting money away for retirement.

Also, if you have a high-deductible health insurance policy, you should consider opening a health savings account (see HSAsearch. com). This is an excellent tool that can be used to sock away funds pre-tax and use them before or after retirement to pay for medical expenses.

Find Your Number It’s also important to get a handle on how much you need to save for a comfortable retirement. You can do this through a number of free online calculators like ChooseToSave.org or FinancialMentor.com/ calculator.

Pay Off Debt If you have debt, you need to get it under control. If you need some help with this, consider a nonprofit credit-counseling agency that provides free or low cost advice and solutions, and can help you set up a debt management plan. To locate an agency, use the National Foundation for Credit Counseling website at NFCC.org or call 800-388-2227.

Find Help To help you educate yourself on financial matters like retirement planning, saving and investing, health care, annuities and more, a top resource is the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement at WiserWomen.org.

Pa s s e d away on August 10, 2018 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston after a short illness. Jay was born in East Boston on July 9, 1932, one of four children of the late Agostino and Mary (Pierro) DeBenedetto. The family moved from East Boston to Everett when Jay was a teenager and he has lived in Everett his whole adult life. He graduated from high school and enlisted in the United States Army and proudly ser ved his countr y during the Korean Confl ict. In 1958, he married the love of his life Marguerite Parsons and at

the end of this month they will be married for 60 years. They began their life together in Everett and raised their four children.

He was active in his community and served as Exalted Ruler of the Stoneham Lodge of Elks, member of The American Legion, Lynn and member of the Saugus/Everett Lodge of Elks.
