A “rare” feat: Division 1 schools sign two seniors to play collegiate sports next year

I

t’s been a challenging, chaotic year for the Saugus High football team, which began the season without their head coach Anthony Nalen – who was fired in the midst of a controversy that made unflattering national news.

“We lost our whole coaching staff. It was tough,” Sachems Co-Captain Jake Morgante told The Saugus Advocate this week as he reflected on his team’s year of adversity.

But Morgante and the other seven seniors who will play the final game of their High School football careers next Thursday (Nov. 22) know they can end their playing days on a positive note that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

“We got to win this one, because it means lot to me,” the 18-year-old, four-year veteran said as he looked ahead to their Thanksgiving Day showdown against Peabody Veterans Memorial High School at 10 a.m. in Peabody.

“We’ve lost all three of my Thanksgiving Day games, and I plan on holding up the trophy this year,” he said.

But in his interview later, Morgante said the award should be shared with his two cocaptains. “There are two more kids who have played on the varsity for years who deserve this as much as me: Dante McGrane and James Moise,” Morgante said.

“I wish I could put their names on this, too,” he said.

Morgante, an Honor Roll student, is also a captain of the basketball and lacrosse teams.

With his eye on the Thanksgiving clash with Peabody, he

beams confidence. “We could have done better, but we made a run for the playoffs. And we got an upset win that allowed us to compete into the second round. Now we got a chance to walk off winners,” Morgante said.

Peabody Tanners’Coach Mark Bettencourt paid the Sachems – and Saugus High School Coach Mabee, in particular – a public tribute at Wednesday’s dinner. “I think it’s going to be a solid game,” Bettencourt said, adding that he didn’t think the game would be lopsided like many of the recent games between the two schools.

Five fifth-graders discuss the challenges, fun and educational benefit of creating robots

Editor’s Note: For this week, we accepted an invitation from Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr., to visit Bill Palmerini’s classroom at Veterans Memorial Elementary School and learn about the elementary level robotics program he co-teaches with Computer Literacy Teacher Jaclyn Hunter.

Palmerini, a lifelong town resident and 1982 Saugus High School graduate, has been teaching in Saugus Public Schools for 33 years – all in the fifth grade.

He is a 1986 graduate of Merrimack College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Education. He has a Master’s in Education from Boston University.

Hunter is in her second full year as a teacher. A native of Hunterdon County, N.J., she is a 2012 graduate of Hunterdon Central High School. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She is studying for her Master’s at Lesley University.

We interviewed five of the 20 fifth-grade students who are enrolled in the school district’s elementary level robotics program, which is taught in 90-minute sessions twice a week. The program – which involves building robots and programming them for competition in the First Lego Robotics League – was made possible by an $80,000 grant the town received three years ago, with the help of State Rep. Donald Wong (R-Saugus). The 20 students enrolled in the robotics program have been split into two teams that will compete in regional competition

next month at Nashoba Valley Technical High School in Westford. The theme of the competition is outer space. And the students have to program the robots to perform various missions in a certain amount of time. The students have been working on their robots and the field they play on since September.

The students interviewed by The Saugus Advocate were Calen Brennan, Christian Santa Maria and Scott Crabtree, who are

School Committee members are pleased to announce that as part of Northeast Metro Tech’s efforts to recognize Veterans Day this year, students attended a special presentation from two Vietnam veterans, who shared their experiences before, during and after the war On Thursday, Nov. 8, juniors taking U.S. History gathered in the school library to hear from Jim Marshall, 3rd Class Petty Officer in the Naval Construction Battalion, and Marine Corps Cpl. Bill Doucette, who is also Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2346 in Saugus.

“We want to thank Bill and Jim for sharing their stories with us ahead of the holiday,” history teacher Joe O’Brien said. “For students, having someone actually talk about their experiences is an excellent source for this point in history and was a really fitting tribute to Veterans Day.” Doucette and Marshall emotionally recounted tales of their

service, speaking about the draft, life on their respective bases in Vietnam and their return home.

Marshall also passed out a sample of the selective service system for men facing the draft in 1971. He asked students to find their birthday on the list, noting that anyone whose corresponding number was at or below 195 would be drafted. A chilling realization came over the group as several students raised their hands when he followed up with, “who would be drafted?”

After their account of the war, Marshall and Doucette answered questions submitted by students prior to the presentation.

What was the biggest adjustment into the military? How did you and your family cope?

Doucette: “Every week, I would get a package from people back at home, which reminded me that people were still thinking of me. My father, he had a little picture of me in my camouflage and he blew it up into a poster and put it in the TV room. Every night, he would pat it and say goodnight, hoping that there was no knock on the door the next day.”

What was your most memorable experience?

Doucette: “New Year’s Eve, 1970. I was high up in the mountains. So high that I was in the clouds. I had a friend who I had gone to boot camp with in Buffalo, New York and I was waiting for him to land via helicopter. It felt so great to see someone I knew when he finally landed.”

Marshall: “The comradery with other people.”

What was life like after war?

Doucette: “Nobody wanted to talk to you. Nobody treated you fairly. I missed my fellow marines.”

Marshall: “The hardest part for me was coming home. For 20 years, I suppressed everything I did. I didn’t want to be ridiculed. So today, when someone comes up to me and thanks me for my service, it’s another little piece that gets healed.”

Following the presentation, Matthew Cheffro, a junior from Wakefield, said he was moved and inspired by the veterans’ stories.

“We as a community must recognize the service and sacrifice of the men and women that have served in the United States military,” he said.

Junior Christopher Solis, from Saugus, reminisced about his own family history after hearing Doucette and Marshall speak.

“This presentation taught me to be appreciative for what veterans have provided to the country,” Solis said. “Coming from an immigrant family, I am appreciative of veterans because without their service, we would not have the opportunities that we have today.”

School Principal Hashem – is also a part of that family soccer legacy. He played three years on the Saugus High boys’ soccer team before graduating in 1985. Later, he went on to be the head coach of the Saugus High boys’ soccer team from 1994 to 2001.

“I’ve been playing since I was four, on town league and travel teams,” said LeBlanc, who led the team with 18 goals and 14 assists this past season. The team finished with a 16-3-1 record overall.

18th Annual Christmas Ecumenical Memorial Service At Woodlawn Cemetery

oodlawn Cemetery has announced it will be holding its 18th annual Christmas Ecumenical Memorial Service in the chapel on Thursday, November 29, 2018, at 7:00 p.m.

Twin artists

T

he Saugus Public Library has identified two-yearold twin sister artists, Clare and Marie Venezia (pictured from left to right) as the Saugonians who did extensive work on the books and pumpkins display, which appeared on the front page of the Nov. 2 Saugus Advocate. The young artists are the daughters of Liz Venezia of Saugus. The girls’ grandmother, Cathy Donoghue, created the

project that was based on the popular children’s book “101 Dalmatians.”

So, what did the girls do?

“Cathy said they painted for hours and lost themselves in the process,” said Amy Melton, head of the library’s Children’s Department.

“They dipped cotton balls in black paint for spots and helped glue on the ears and eyes, too. It’s a wonderful Hal-

loween idea – and I imagine would be fun for a larger group of kids [a classroom] to make together, too. It brought a smile to everyone who saw it,” Melton said. “It was a wonderful way to engage the kids in painting.”

George was born January 8, 1927, in Gates, Tenn., and died October 18, 2018. George wanted to be a boxer after high school but his mother forbade it. He graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in Gary, Ind., and went on to play for Indiana University (IU), where in addition to his gridiron achievements, he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. At Indiana he was the leading rusher, and he led the team to their only undefeated Big Ten Championship.

He was a three time All-American as a quarterback and halfback for the Hoosiers. George was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

He almost left the University after his first days there because of the racism that restricted his lifestyle. Rather than place him in a dorm, he was put with a black family in town. He came to realize that an education was more im-

portant than the slights he had to bear.

Taliaferro’s career statistics in the NFL consist of 72 games, 498 runs acquiring 2,266 yards, and 15 touchdowns. As a receiver he accumulated 1,300 yards on 95 receptions. As a passer he added 1,633 yards from 92 completions.

After football George was a volunteer with Big Brothers of Baltimore, advising prisoners as to how to adjust to society after their release. He attended Howard University to obtain his master’s degree, taught at Maryland, became Dean of Students at Morgan State College, then returned to Indiana as a professor and special assistant to IU President John Ryan.

George set the standard for African-Americans to look forward to a life of education and opportunity. He will be remembered for his contributions to society in addition to his exploits in football.

Q: What’s the fun part of the robotics program?

Calen Brennan: I think it’s being with all of your friends.

Christian Santa Maria: Thinking up some ideas on how you are going to do the missions correctly. Using your imagination on trying to build the robot and bringing everything together.

Scott Crabtree: It’s just a lot of fun working together and accomplishing the missions and getting the missions done. We spent a lot of time on the mis-

sions and building the field.

Elmer Palencia: Building stuff with your friends.

Joseph Ha: It’s working with everybody else to reach our goals.

Q: What do you hope to get out of this?

Calen Brennan: I really want to go to the finals and win. And maybe someday, I’ll be able to get into engineering.

Christian Santa Maria: I want to be a scientist. I want to discover space and I want to discover everything about the planets.

Scott Crabtree: I hope we do pretty good in the competition and get a lot of points so we win. This is a good experience. And we’re learning how

Northern Strand Community Trail Public meeting prompts more answers and questions about the proposed project

C

onstruction could begin as early as next summer on the proposed Northern Strand Community Trail, 10.5 mile-project that will cross through Saugus, Everett, Lynn, Malden, and Revere.

“The goal is to be ready to bid the entire project in late spring so as to be poised to start construction in July 2019,” said Imogene Hatch, senior associate of Brown, Richardson, + Rowe, Inc., a Boston-based Landscape Architects and Planners firm involved with the project.

However, “because this is a large project involving 5 different communities it is not yet determined whether the construction will be phased and therefore it is possible that work in all the communities may not end up being done concurrently,” Hatch said this week.

Hatch was one of a handful of representatives working on the project who held a public meeting at in the second floor auditorium at Town Hall last week to brief town officials, residents and other concerned citizens about the project that includes a 2.5-mile portion through town.

The Northern Strand Community Trail is part of a commitment of at least $1.5 million by the Baker-Polito Administration to fund designs for the trail in Saugus, Everett, Lynn, Malden, and Revere. The funding, awarded through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Gateway City Parks Program, enables the design of the trail, development of bid-ready construction documents, and receipt of all necessary construction permits.

actively working on developing preliminary designs for the trail through all five communities of Everett, Malden, Revere, Saugus, and Lynn,” Hatch said.

“Results from field work activities that were performed over the summer and early fall including survey, environmental resource area delineation, traffic counts, and structural investigations have all contributed to the design recommendations generated thus far and will continue to play a valuable role in upcoming design refinements,” she said.

“The project team has met with community leaders, staff, and stakeholders in all communities and, with their assistance, has developed preliminary designs for trail alignment, street crossings, bridge design, landscape amenities, and overlook and park areas along the corridor.”

Last week’s meeting was one in a series of community meetings (1 held in each community) this month.

Hatch said there will be another meeting in Saugus in early spring, maybe around March.

Several town officials attending last week’s session said they had some concerns about several trail crossing in town. The project being considered involves Saugus crossings at Laurel Street, Eustis Street, School Street, Essex Street, Adams Avenue and Denver Street.

Several residents would like to see lights placed for security reasons along the bike path.

But Hatch said the plans called for the paths to be operating from dawn through dusk -- and not at night. The path would also be paved and the state is recommending several raised crossings. But the state

won’t support a raised crossing unless the Fire Department supports it.

Local bicycling enthusiast Fred Moore said he doesn’t like the idea of parking lots being created along part of the trail.

“It (the trail) should be to relieve traffic -- not exacerbate it,” Moore said.

The Saugus resident said it only takes him eight minutes to drive to GE Lynn -- less than half of the 17 minutes it would take him to drive by car.

“The cycle should take top priority. Too many times in this town, it’s all about the cars,” Moore said.

Hatch responded that “we design equally for pedestrians and bicyclists.”

“We wouldn’t sacrifice one for another,” she said.

School Committee member Jeannie Meredith, a part-time

city employee who is covering the Planning Department, said she doesn’t view the community trail as a bike path.

“I think it offers something to people of all ages and can be a huge asset to the community,” Meredith said in an interview after the meeting.

“You might have elderly people sitting on a bench or who are out there walking. There are all sorts of community uses. Sometimes, I might ride my bike. Sometimes I take my kayak out (on the river near the path) Sometimes, I run,” she said.

The state’s intentions are for the community trail to be “multi-faceted,” according to Kurt Gaertner, director of Land, Policy and Planning for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

“We envisage people doing multi-uses,” he said of the trail that would extend from the Mystic River to Everett.

Gaertner said he doesn’t know how much the project would cost.

“We were given an original estimate of $11-million,” he said, noting that $5-million was set aside for the 2020 fiscal year and $6-million for the 2021 fiscal year.

Some of the other plans unveiled last week include the spanning of a new bridge over the existing Saugus River Bridge, which is considered to be “in fair condition, but not a good long-term investment.

There is also consideration of including a Saugus Marsh Overlook, which would include a boardwalk with a seating area and signage about the ecology.

The community trail could also wind up connecting various parks and communities within the town, like the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site.

thing I get out of it is watching my students succeed as a team and love learning while they are doing it. In my classroom, I have almost zero absenteeism. All of the kids love this class, and all of these kids work together well.

“My education comes first, because I want to be prepared for the rest of my life,” he said.

Tringale, the son of Karen and Joel Tringale, plans to study sports management at UMass Amherst. “I want to do something with baseball – ei-

ther manage a Minor League team or be in the front office [of a baseball franchise],” Tringale said.

“I’m the only kid in my family who has been this active in baseball. I’ve played since I was five. I’ve been pitching since Little League,” he said.

And the Sachems’ right hander has been spectacular during his High School career, with one more year left to play. He will be one of the co-captains on the baseball team next spring.

It was a bitter loss, Sakelakos recalled later about the 1968

showdown. “It was 24-12 and we lost at our home field – Leo Buckley Stadium, the old Peabody Stadium. Sakelakos, who played offensive and defensive tackle, said the team failed to make the playoffs despite finishing with a 7-1-1 record.

But Sakelakos said the rivalry continues to be a great tradition. Both of his sons – Chris (1998 Peabody graduate) and Mark (2002 Peabody graduate) – played in the game.

As for the meal, this is the first time in many years that

the Peabody Lions Club has hosted the meal for the seniors and the coaching staffs of both teams.

“It’s the ultimate show of what Thanksgiving football is supposed to be about: breaking bread with your rivals, enjoying a pleasant night and then being able to turn on the juices Thanksgiving morning,” Bettencourt said.

“It ’s nice to bring both teams together so ever ybody can enjoy a nice meal,” Mabee added.

Sachems look to close out football season with Thanksgiving win

mid much external turmoil throughout the season, the Saugus Sachems enter this year’s annual Thanksgiving clash against Peabody with a chance to improve on last year’s performance.

The Sachems earned their fourth victory by dumping Pentucket Regional, 21-7, last Saturday at Stackpole Field.

The win left Saugus with a 4-6 mark for the season. A triumph on Thanksgiving would give the Sachems a one-win improvement over 2017.

Against Pentucket, RB Marvens Jean continued his stellar play with a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Jean also achieved a 1,000-yard

rushing season by gaining 50 yards on the ground. Quarterback Mason Nickolas threw for 130 yards and a TD. Christian Correia caught a 14-yard scoring pass, and Dante McGrane ran one in from eight yards out to account for the Saugus scoring.

The Sachems, who finished 4-7 last year, have had to overcome what started out as a turbulent 2018 campaign when head coach Anthony Nalen was suspended before the season opener and eventually terminated from his position.

Former middle school coach Mike Mabee has performed the head coaching duties this season.

The Sachems now move on to face Peabody in the 73rd

Thanksgiving Day contest between the two foes next Thursday (10 a.m.) at Peabody High School’s Veterans Memorial Stadium. This is shaping up as one of the more intriguing matchups in several years.

Both teams hold 4-6 records and qualified as a sixth seed in the Div. North state playoffs.

Saugus upset Weston in the Div. 5 North opening round and gave Amesbury a formidable second-round battle before succumbing, 20-0, when the Indians scored 20 fourthquarter points to escape victorious. Meanwhile, Peabody lost in the Div. 2 North first round to Reading.

To offset food-insecure households, Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus will provide a weekend’s supply of nutritious food for each eligible child when school lunches and breakfasts are unavailable to them on weekends or school holidays during the school year. Take-home grocery bags will contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, one can of vegetables and one can of fruit. All food will be nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. If additional food is needed for extended family members, it will be provided.

It is our hope these resources will support the health, behavior and achievement of every student who participates. Parents will apply for the program by filling out a simple consent form.

The program will be run by the school department’s current food service provider, Whitsons, and the many

wonderful volunteers who will be pack ing the food bags. On Thursdays, Whitsons will deliver food and grocery bags to each volunteer site where the bags will be packed, then picked up by Whitsons on Fridays and delivered to the schools for students to take home. The program will begin first at the elementary schools and, if the need arises, it will be expanded to the upper grades. The school district will use the utmost discretion in identifying students and working with families to ensure the grocery bags make it home with minimal barriers. The aim of Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus is to keep children healthy, thriving and able to succeed in school.

Area businesses and organizations supporting this effort are Whitsons, Rotary Club of Saugus, Wheelabrator and Saugus Public Schools.

FBI warns that posting hoax threats is a crime Launches campaign to educate the public to #ThinkBeforeYouPost

he FBI’s Boston Division is launching a public awareness campaign to educate the public about the consequences of making hoax threats of violence to schools, events and other public places, and reminds everyone that any threat is taken with the utmost seriousness and will be quickly and thoroughly addressed by law enforcement. Hoax threats are not a joke – they are a crime!

In the aftermath of tragic shootings, such as the ones at Santa Fe High School in Texas and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, the FBI and law enforcement agencies around the country often see an increase in threats made to schools, events and other public buildings.

“You might be angry, you may be joking, or looking for a way to be heard, or seek revenge, but you need to stop and think before you post because making any threat, even a hoax, has consequences.

It drains critical law enforce-

ment resources, diverts first responders away from actual emergencies, and is an unnecessary burden on the taxpayers,” said Harold H. Shaw, who is Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, which covers all of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. He added, “The FBI and our law enforcement partners spend countless hours following up on the tips we receive, all in an effort to determine their credibility and take steps to mitigate any risk to the public. There is no alternative – there is too much at stake – and we’re always concerned that the subject behind the threat intends to follow through with their actions.”

In the last five years, the number of hoax threats made against schools and other public places through various social media platforms here in the Boston Division has tripled. “Based on our estimates, we’re receiving reports of at least two threats a

day that turn out to be hoaxes,” said Shaw.

When an investigation concludes that a false or hoax threat has been made to a school, event or another pub-

lic place, state or federal charges could be levied. A federal charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

Time for holiday lights downtown!

This just in from Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree’s Office.

“One of the community’s most beloved events, the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Festivities, is coming to Town,” the manager’s office said in a press release issued Wednesday. “Residents young and old are invited to Town Hall on Friday, November 30, 2018 for a fun-filled evening with Santa, sleigh rides, a petting zoo, a moon bounce, hot chocolate, cookies, entertainment, hay rides, story time, and much more. The Town is also excited for the return of holiday trackless train rides, which will run weather permitting.”

“Please join your family and friends and come out to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season as a community,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “This is one of our Town’s most unforgettable annual events, so I hope to see you all there.”

He continued, “Each year the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Festivities is bigger and more magical than ever, thanks to countless hours of preparation and setup by volunteers, the Department of Youth and Recreation, the Department of Public Works, the Building Maintenance Department, and numerous other municipal employees. This beloved event would also not be possible without the continued support and generosity from residents and local businesses.

“This year’s Tree Lighting Ceremony and Festivities will kick off at 5 pm sharp next Friday. The actual tree lighting will take place at 7 p.m., and the evening will conclude by 8:30 p.m.”

For me, personally, as an outsider who visits Saugus three to four days a week to cover the news, this event is right up there with my other favorite, “Founders Day.” It’s the type of event where it’s great to see people put away their troubles and enjoy some quality time in their hometown. It’s also a huge “Kodak moment” for folks who want to snap some photos of their kids and kin (yeah, grownups, too!) with Santa Claus – occasionally, you might see a local lady who feels like sitting on Santa’s lap for the photo.

Anyway, if you are parents – looking to do something fun with the children – this is a good time. From what I see, senior citizens and middle age people like it, too.

And oh my gosh, by golly, that Santa Claus they have working near the tree set up in the second-floor auditorium at Town Hall is a classic. And he seems to love what he’s doing – providing photo opportunities for several hundred people.

making Saugus streets safer – particularly for pedestrians.

Robert D. Hoffman, a Main Street resident who has been outspoken about the lack of concern for pedestrian safety in town since he and wife Judith were injured by a car while walking in a crosswalk on Central Street back in January, made the town aware that his wife recently died, reportedly from complications caused by the injuries she received.

“I’m a victim. My wife passed away Sunday [Oct. 28]. We were struck on Central Street, crossing at the bike trail,” Hoffman said in emotional remarks at last week’s public hearing on the Saugus segment of the Northern Strand Community Trail.

“You don’t know what it’s like to be a victim and have your wife pass away on Sunday because of some idiot who couldn’t see.

He was blind,” said Hoffman.

He didn’t feel that the bike trail as proposed had done enough for pedestrian safety.

It’s indeed unfortunate that it has taken a senseless car-pedestrian incident that happened back in January to galvanize a public focus on safety issues that have been long neglected.

Mrs. Hoffman’s passing should put more pressure on town officials to take responsible action Hoffman already commanded a great deal of respect on the issue of pedestrians even before his wife’s passing. He served 20 years as a Town Meeting member in Precinct 8. He paid for the clock that was installed in Saugus Town Hall and also donated money to help pay for bookshelves in the Saugus Public Library. His late wife was a member of the Saugus Garden Club and helped start the town’s Tree Farm. Both have been valuable and caring members of the community.

Hopefully, within the coming months, town officials and the police will collaborate with comprehensive steps to make Saugus streets safer for pedestrians as well as drivers.

And it behooves Town Meeting members to do a serious, comprehensive inventory of safety issues or needs within their precincts – and if necessary, to make the next Annual Town Meeting a public forum to consider issues related to pedestrian safety.

It’s a great day to be a Sachem!

There were no roll calls in the House or Senate last week. This week Beacon Hill Roll Call begins a series of report on how local legislators in 2017-2018 voted on roll calls raising, lowering or creating new taxes.

The proposal was supposed to go on the November ballot for voters to decide but the Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the amendment was unconstitutional because the constitution prohibits placing more than one objective in a single proposed constitutional amendment. Gov. Baker proposed some amendments to the bill and the Legislature has not yet acted on his amendments so the bill remains unsigned.

The measure also allows local cities and towns to impose a local impact fee of up to 3 percent on operators who rent out two or more professionally-managed short-term rental units within a municipality.

Other provisions create a central state registry of shortterm rentals and require that a city or town dedicate no less than 35 percent of revenue generated from the new local option fee to either affordable housing or local infrastructure needs.

When You Need Help Caring for an Aging Parent

Dear Savvy Senior, Where can I turn for caregiving help? I help take care of my 78-year-old mother and work too, and it’s wearing me to a frazzle.

Exhausted Daughter Dear Exhausted, Taking care of an aging parent over a period of time – especially when juggling work and other family obligations – can be physically and mentally exhausting. But help and resources are available.

To help you determine and prioritize the kinds of help you need, a good first step is to make a list of everything you do as a caregiver, big and small. Note the amount of time each one takes every day, week or month. Identify the times when you need help the most and which tasks others might be able to do for you, like making lunch for your mother when you’re at work.

Then list the types of care needed, such as simple companionship or doing active chores, like food shopping. Once you determine this, here are some tips and places you can reach out to for help.

Caregiving Help If you have siblings or other loved ones close by, schedule a family meeting, in person or by phone, to discuss specific tasks they could provide. See if friends, neighbors or faith group members could help too.

You should also investigate resources in your mom’s town.

Many communities offer a range of free or subsidized services that help seniors and caregivers with basic needs such as home delivered meals, transportation, senior companion services and respite services, which offers short-term care so you can take an occasional break. Call your Area Agency on Aging (call 800677-1116 for contact information) for referrals to services available in your community, or for respite services see ARCHrespite. org/respitelocator.

If you can afford it, you may want to hire someone part-time to help with things like preparing meals, housekeeping or even personal care. Costs can run anywhere from $12 up to $25 per hour. To find someone, ask for referrals through your mom’s doctor or area hospital discharge planners, or try websites like Care. com, CareLinx.com, CareFamily.com or CareSpotter.com.

Financial Aids If your handling your mom’s financial chores, make things easier by arranging for direct deposit for her income sources, and set up automatic payments for her utilities and other routine bills. You may also want to set up your mom’s online banking service, so you can pay bills and monitor her account anytime.

Or, if you need help, hire a daily money manager (AADMM.com) to do it for you. They charge between $25 and $100 per hour.

BenefitsCheckup.org is another excellent resource to look for financial assistance programs that may help your mom, particularly if she’s lower-income.

Technology Assistance To help you keep tabs on your mom when you are away at work or if she lives alone, there are affordable technologies that can help.

For example, there are medical alert systems (like Bay Alarm Medical, BayAlarmMedical.com), which provide a wearable “help button” that would allow your mom to call for help anytime she needed it.

Or, you could install a video-monitoring camera (like Lighthouse Al, Light.house/elderly-care) that lets you check in on her anytime via your smartphone or computer. These cameras have built-in motion and sound detection that will let you know when something is detected, and two-way audio that will let you talk and listen to her.

There are even websites (like LotsaHelpingHands.com) that can help you more easily coordinate care with other family members.

If you have questions about Medicare, Medicaid or long-term care, your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free counseling and advice on these issues. Call 877-8392675 or visit ShiptaCenter.org to locate a nearby counselor. You can also get help through the Medicare Rights Center, which staffs a help-line at 800-333-4114.

usic Director Dr. Robert Lehmann will set down his conductor’s baton and pick up his violin to play the Brahms violin concerto as the featured soloist in the fall concert of the North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra (NSPO) on Sunday, November 18, at 3:00 p.m. at Swampscott High School. Beethoven’s grand Symphony No. 7 and Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances are also on the concert program. Tickets are available online at www.nspo.org and at the door for $30; $25 for seniors and students; children 12 and under are admitted free.

Dr. Lehmann, who is entering his 21st season as the NSPO’s Music Director, studied the Brahms violin concerto earlier this year during a sabbatical from his professorial duties at the University of Southern Maine, where he is Director of String Studies and Orchestral Activities. His NSPO performance will mark the first time he will play the work in concert.

The Brahms violin concerto is hailed as one of the most technically demanding concerti in the classical repertoire.

The piece entails vibrant collaboration between soloist and orchestra. The soloist’s range captures every musical aspect – from lyric commentary to energetic leadership and rhythmic complexity – along with a challenging cadenza in the opening movement. It is widely considered among the world’s greatest concerti and one of Brahms’s most recognized works. Ben David Richmond will conduct while Dr. Lehmann wears his violin soloist cap.

Dr. Lehmann will set down his violin and return to the conductor’s podium to lead Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. Written between 1811 and 1812, the Symphony No. 7 was one of Beethoven’s favorites – and he considered it one of his best. It incorporates dance, subtle tonality, and exhilarating pace in its final movement. Music histori-

Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
