24,000 square feet of retail space. 110 Grill would occupy a one-floor, two-room building that encompasses 5,600 square feet with a seating capacity of 187 – including 24 to 30 seats for a horseshoe bar, according to Karen D. Simao, an attorney for McDermott, Quilty & Miller LLP, a leading Boston law firm and government affairs practice retained by 855 Broadway Licensee, LLC. “We’re in the process of finalizing a lease,” Simao told selectmen Wednesday night. She added that fencing would be installed within a few days at the site off of the southbound lane of Route 1. The target date for the opening of 110 Grill is within the first quarter of 2019.

“The public need for a restaurant” “The applicant will provide the members of the community as well as residents of the development with a restaurant to enjoy meals with family, friends and/or loved ones, similarly to the previous License holder at this location,” 855 Broadway Licensee noted in its Applicant’s Statement of Public Need, which Simao presented to selectmen.

“Historically, this site operated a restaurant for 52 years, evidencing the community demand and the public need for a restaurant at the premises. The increase in residential units directly increases the population and the need for the License to continue to operate at the location,” the document stated, referring to the Hilltop’s legacy and the future development of the apartment community of 280 units at the site.

Simao told selectmen that 855 Broadway Licensee is negotiating with an unnamed company for another restaurant at the site, “a fast, casual restaurant” with a drivethrough.

“That’s been a hot spot for many years,” Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta said of the Hilltop site. “People are curious,” she said.

McLean noted the restaurant’s hours of operation: Sunday through Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Nobody spoke in opposition to the transfer of the liquor and restaurant license during the public hearing.

Restaurant locations could double next year The Saugus Fire Department offered no objection to the transfer of the liquor license.

The Fire Department will need to review all plans for the new building and its life safety systems.

“Our plan is to bring an upscale, casual American cuisine to Saugus,” McLean said in an interview after the hearing.

“We have 11 restaurants right now and will have 12 next week. We’re three years old and we’re going to have 10 to 12 new restaurants next year,” he said.

So it’s possible that 110 Grill’s locations could double by the time the company opens its future Saugus restaurant. 110 Grill’s restaurants in Massachusetts include Chelmsford – its first opening, in 2014 – and Haverhill. The company’s New Hampshire properties include Nashua and Rochester.

A company brochure describes the “Atmosphere” of each establishment: “The restaurants feature five different dining experiences, including a dining room with an open kitchen that takes center stage, a spacious 30-seat bar, a lounge with high-top tables, a private dining room with sliding glass doors and a TV for presentations, and a beautiful outdoor patio with a roaring fire pit and couches.”

Retired Fire Capt. Bill O’Malley talks about the Saugus Fire Department Christmas Toy Drive he’s led for more than three decades Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down for a coffee with Retired Saugus Fire Department Capt. Bill O’Malley to talk about a “duty” he didn’t relinquish when he left the department – overseeing the annual Saugus Fire Department Christmas Toy Drive. O’Malley is a longtime Saugus resident who spent 36 years at the Fire Department before retiring in 2004. But he remains very active with other retired Saugus firefighters and active members he calls “Santa’s Elves” in helping to spread some Christmas cheer to needy families this time of year. He and his wife, Carole, have been married for 58 years. And he credits her for being an asset to the holiday mission he’s been running for more than three decades. “Nothing gets done

without Carole,” he said. O’Malley is modest about his role in this holiday tradition. Some highlights of the interview follow.

Q: Please tell me how this wonderful project began.

A: It started when I got a call from Parker Brothers. They were getting ready to go out of business. This was more than 30 years ago. They called up and they said they had a few toys left over, and they asked whether the Fire Department could do anything with them. I said, “Of course we can.” I figured we could find some families in town who could use some toys. It was a small amount, but it grew from there.

Q: At that time, what was your rank at the Fire Department?

A: Lieutenant.

Q: So you just happened to be fielding the phone call that day?

A: That’s right. I was in the office when they called up and said they had some toys and wanted to know whether we could do anything with them.

And naturally, I said “Yes.” We called around to the schools, organizations and churches, and they would give us names of the people they think need help or they know need help. And I picked up the ball from there and I called them up. And I said,“I understand you need some help this year.” And they asked who told me that, and I told them it was confidential, and they either said they did or didn’t need help.

And we went from there.

Q: So, that first year …

A: That first year really wasn’t much. We didn’t have a Fire Department toy drive at the time.

But that’s where it started, and then we went to next year.

Q: So how many toys were there the first year?

A: Not much. When we checked around, we had quite a few names from families, but not enough toys, but we did the best we could. But now we got a good supply and are in a position to help a lot more people.

Q: So after you got that phone call from Parker Brothers, you figured you could do it again?

A: Yeah, we decided to continue it, so we decided to advertise in the paper to get people to donate to the Fire Department. And people did call up asking where they could bring the toys, and we told them to leave it at the Fire Station. And then some of the banks in town learned we were doing it and said they would [get] a box out for us. And then the next thing you know, Town Hall called up and said they would help out.

Thanks to The Saugus Advocate and its editor for bringing my situation with the town up front.

As the article stated, I have been trying to correct a bad depression on Walnut Street directly in front of my house at Great Woods Road (See “Patching things up. Great Woods Road homeowner seeks help from town in eliminating noise generated by ‘bad patch’ in Walnut Street,” Nov. 22, 2017 edition.)

I started on my journey by trying to speak to our present DPW director. After a short time, I was able to state my concerns about the noise produced by certain trucks, trailers, etc. I was told that he had to take care of other issues first. I was fine with that.

The second year arrived and it seemed that the director was too busy to speak with me. So, I was directed to his second in command. This gentleman stated he would put this repair on his list for the up and coming year.

After working in the asphalt business for 32 years, I felt this would be done in the correct manner. WRONG. A com-

pany was working on the depression when I came home one day. The heating method they were using melts the asphalt and is not the right method for repairs such as that one. The depression only became deeper and created a lot of noise.

Having the opportunity to speak to the director about the poor job, I stated that all he did was waste taxpayers money. He got a little upset, but that could be normal for someone who doesn’t know a good patch from a bad patch.

I would hope he has all the qualifications required to hold that position. And, I repeat ALL. I also would hope that the taxpayers are not going to pay to hire an engineer to work alongside the DPW director.

Let’s be concerned about adding to the payroll budget when the DPW Director should have all of the proper credentials required to do the job.

My next step was to get the attention of the town manager and hope he could help me with this situation.

half. I had written a three-page letter to the town manager only to wait and have not even a phone call for that time period.

I felt that this is not the type of public servant we need when a taxpayer needs help.

Fast forward again, to the night I was scheduled to speak to the selectmen. The town manager calls me and asks if there is anything he could do for me. The only reason he called was Selectman (Debra) Panetta requested him to do so. Unbelievable. He calls after one and a half years. This sure does seem like he has a habit of ducking for cover when it suits him.

I must say that Rep. Donald Wong tried to assist me and sent an email and a phone call to the manager’s office and never received a reply.

He also went to the office without success. Is this how a public employee treats a state rep?

to see for herself what the problem was. She took photos and did some voice recordings. I thought it was a positive meeting. Time passed without a reply. A five-minute phone call goes a long way to reduce the stress levels. I am now aware that all that information was sent to the DPW for further review. The hallmark for public officials should be their ability to communicate with the taxpayers. I believe that is why we elect certain people. They should be concerned about our needs first and foremost.

For us, the taxpayers. I would hope that people will speak up and continue to voice their displeasures and pleasures on the way our officials are running this town.

As my father told me many moons ago, “If you never ask or speak out, nothing will ever change.”

Q: So how many kids did you help out that second year?

A: I’m not sure, but it took three to five years to reach the point where we had it going good and where we could meet the needs of the community.

Q: So how many organizations and businesses are involved?

A: There about six banks – the Palace was one of the big night clubs that did it. The schools gave us the names of the people they figured needed help.

Who knows better than them?

So things got better and it got to the point where people in town knew what the Fire Department was doing this time of year, and a lot of people came forward to help out. Things got very good, and we didn’t have to worry about anybody not getting more than one toy.

Say you had the names of a family, and there were three boys and three girls. We put their gifts in big black bags, and when we delivered them to the house, nobody could see what was in those bags. It would say right on it “boy, 4” or “boy, 3.”When we bring the toys to the Fire Station, we separate them: girls, boys, babies, older girls, older boys. They’re all spread out.

Q: How many houses did you go to last year?

A: About 60.That was a good year. That was about the best we’ve ever done. Years before that, we’ve had some years almost as good, but when the economy was really bad, everybody and their brother was looking for help. But the donations were there for us, so it was great. You can give out more than one toy to each of the kids.

Q: So these were [about] 60 households. So you could have more than a hundred kids getting some help?

A: Oh yeah. And we don’t get toys for teens; we get them gift

Q: So what’s the deadline on this year, for people to donate if they want?

A: About Dec. 18. You have to deliver them when they’re in school.

Q: So that’s the last day people can make a donation.

A: Yes, but we’ll still take anything that comes in later. We accept everything.

Q: So that box will be at Town Hall until Dec. 18?

A: Yes, that’s right.

Q: So how many people involved in the wrapping?

A: There’s no wrapping, so parents can see what they’re getting. They do the wrapping if they want.

Q: So how many people involved in the delivery?

A: Usually in the delivery, I’ll get three or four firefighters with pickup trucks, and we always send out two people in a truck.

Nobody goes by themselves.

It’s like a paper route. They have some presents to drop off in one part of town, and they can come back and get some more and go out in another part of town.

Q: When do you make the deliveries?

A: Maybe two or three days before Christmas. We want to do it while the kids are in school, so we tell them to make sure there is somebody home to receive the delivery.

Q: You make the deliveries when the kids are in school so it’s a surprise for them?

A: Yes, so it’s a surprise and they don’t know what’s coming. We put them [the presents] in those big black construction bags. When the guys deliver, there is a number and address on the bag so they know where to go and who to contact. It was tough at first, because we had never done it before, but now a lot of families come and we have a lot of toys. The business people and the residents of Saugus – you can’t say enough about them – they are really great!

They are very generous when it comes to donating.

Q: So what do you officially call the program?

The malls in December are a whole other world – an Apocalyptic setting, just with

more people. Customers crowd the food court, leaving their trash everywhere.

Soccer moms freak out at employees in stores because they can’t return an item or their coupon expired. Children sit on Santa’s lap and immediately screech and cry for their mothers. Children that were able to avoid Santa dart in between people, yelling for candy and toys.

Mothers rush around trying to get all the Christmas gifts in time. Husbands and boyfriends sweat in jewelry stores, wondering if their pick of a necklace or bracelet is good enough. ASKS | from page 6 ny story from a few years back when I met this one big guy, and I think he had three or four kids, so I called him up. He wanted to know who referred him. I told him it was confidential, but said“I understand you could use some help.” He said he certainly could, so we bagged up the presents, and he is was overwhelmed with what we brought him. And he’s a big guy – really big. So, after I got done and put all the presents on his front porch, he was so happy, there were tears in his eyes. He wasn’t expecting the number of gifts we brought. Well, he picked me up so high my feet were dangling, and he was squeezing me so hard, I was saying, “Hey, you’re

going to break my ribs. Please, you’re going to kill me.” But that’s how excited he was. This guy got so emotional.

Q: How many kids did he have?

A: I think there were four kids, and this guy was really up against it and needed help. You get some emotional stories like that, but this is the one I most remember.

And I’ll tell you another story: We had a family we knew when the kid was in the first or second grade right up until they got through school, and every year they needed help. And we knew it. A few years went by after that, and I got a check in the mail from this family. One of the girls who was receiving the gifts who was out working said something like

“If it wasn’t for the Saugus Fire Department Toy Drive, we wouldn’t have gotten anything. And we really appreciate it. And I’m doing so good now myself – here’s a donation for somebody else now.”

Well, something like that makes it all worthwhile. It’s really heartwarming.

Q: So how long ago was that?

A: Maybe five or six years ago.

Q: So how much was it?

A: Something she could afford: maybe about 50 bucks.

Q: That’s a very good donation.

A: It certainly was, and she was a recipient who wanted to express her appreciation. She told us, “You helped me out, so now I want to help you out.”We get a few stories like this, and you get people who come in and want to help out and be an anonymous donor. And I tell the guys to get their names, because we thank everybody; we make sure everybody knows that we appreciate it. It is very satisfying.

People are so generous these days that we get enough to give everybody who needs help more than one toy, so they think

Q: Now, you’ve been retired from the Saugus Fire Department for a while, but are still very active with the toy drive. You’ve stuck with it.

A: When I retired, nobody stepped forward. They probably would have, but people asked me if I was still going to stick with it, and I said, “No doubt about it.” But we get volunteers from the Fire Department to help out with the deliveries.

Q: So how many volunteers you going to need this year?

A: I’ll need six volunteers with the trucks, but I’ll also need volunteers to help load the gifts into the trucks. I get my “Elves.” I call them “The Fire Department Elves.” They know who they are.

They have been right with me since the beginning.

Q: So you have some retired firefighters who stuck with it?

A: Right. And if I didn’t call them, they would be miffed.

Q: Anything else that you would like to share?

A: Yes. This is something that started out small and has really

turned into something big. And it’s really been a success because of all the volunteers who have been involved. It’s become a labor of love for a lot of the folks involved. Thanks to the organizations and the citizens of Saugus that donate to the Fire Department, we’re able to do this.

Without them, it isn’t happening. It makes your job easier with them. So, I want the people of Saugus to know that [we] appreciate all of the help that we get – from the volunteers who help the toy drive and all of the people who donate the toys.

The Fire Department will be hosting its annual toy drive through Monday, Dec. 18. Anyone interested in donating may do so at the Hamilton Street or Essex Street Fire Stations. Various businesses will have donation bins available as well. The Fire Department welcomes any new unwrapped toys, gift certificates or cash donations. lectmen has the discretion to award annual bonuses based on the good progress of the Town and the Town Manager’s involvement and influence over that progress.

Selectmen declined to comment on the details of the contract after Wednesday’s meeting, saying the information should be obtained from the town manager. They said they didn’t know if he had signed it yet.

But Cicolini said the new pay wouldn’t even be close to the $200,000 salary that representative of the Saugus Police Patrolman’s Union said Crabtree was seeking.

“He’s not going to be an overly-compensated town manager -- and I can assure you that,” he quipped.

“I think it’s an average contract if you look at surrounding communities. We spent a lot of time on that … In my opinion, he’s going to be fairly compensated,” he said.

A performance review A major component of the contract negotiated by selectmen and Crabtree was a section for performance review.

The section notes that the town manager and selectmen “recognize the importance of strategic planning and establishing goals/objectives to reach positive achievements.”

“In order to promote both, the Board and Town Manager will meet annually in executive session, to discuss Town goals/ objectives and progress of such goals/objectives relating to the Town Manager’s responsibilities in managing and directing such

issues and accomplishing other goals/objectives and needs in the Town,” it continued.

Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta said she believed it was “very important” for the town manager to have performance review annually.

Panetta noted that the board had also spent a significant amount of time studying the pay and salary benefits of comparable officials in neighboring communities to make sure Crabtree was compensated fairly.

One of the chief concerns of the current is maintaining stability in town government. Saugus has a history of high turnover among its town managers, according to Panetta.

“The town manager has done a great job and our finances have never looked better,”Panetta said after Wednesday night’s meeting.

“We want to continue the forward progress that we’ve been making,” she said.

Cicolini said he recognized that Crabtree “is very marketable” and could easily be hired by a surrounding community that offers a better salary and benefits package.

“A lot of people go to other communities for more money,” Cicolini said.

“The mayor of Melrose took the job in Lynnfield for $200,000, and they got a smaller budget than we do,” he said.

Cicolini said it’s a good investment for the town to get a long-term commitment from Crabtree considering the short shelf life for town managers in Saugus.

Keynote presentation: Protecting Watershed Resources in a Changing Climate Executive Director Joan LeBlanc provided highlights from SRWC programs during 2017 as well as a keynote presentation on Protecting Watershed Resources in a Changing Climate.

She noted that 2018 will be a year of transition for SRWC as she plans to leave her position as Director during 2018 to focus her environmental protection efforts on a broader region.

“Climate change is the most significant challenge to protecting watershed resources. To be effective, all watershed restoration efforts must factor in current and future climate change impacts, such as sea level rise, storm surge, increasingly intense rainstorms, temperature increases, and shifts in habitat,” said LeBlanc.

She highlighted opportunities for proactive planning and decision-making to protect coastal communities and natural resources in the future and shared key findings from the November 2017 Climate Science Special Report: Fourth National Climate Assessment issued by the U.S. Global Change Research Program, which is available at https://science2017.globalchange.gov. The report’s findings include the following: •“Global average sea levels are expected to continue to rise – by at least several inches in the next 15 years and by 1-4 feet by 2100. A rise of as much as 8 feet by 2100 cannot be ruled out.

LeBlanc noted that flooding in Lynn earlier in 2017 and “king tide” events around the state are local examples of climate impacts that are already showing up in New England and the Saugus River watershed. She discussed several proactive climate adaptation and mitigation projects in the Saugus River watershed, including education, technical workshops, a vulnerability assessment, and site-specific planning efforts.

“Preventing the potential expansion of Wheelabrator’s coastal ash landfill in the midst of the

Rumney Marshes Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) is one of the Saugus River Watershed Council’s highest priorities in terms of protecting people and natural resources from highly contaminated ash that could spill into the Pines and Saugus Rivers during a major coastal storm,” said LeBlanc.

“Even without an expansion, this site is a high risk because it’s vulnerable to sea level rise and storm surge; could release lead, mercury, cadmium and other hazardous pollutants; lacks a“state of the art” liner; is within an ACEC; and is in close proximity to several neighborhoods in Saugus, Lynn and Revere,” said LeBlanc.

“Wheelabrator’s plan is particularly appalling because they would rip open the waterside portion of the landfill that is already capped, destroying 39

Theatre Company of Saugus to host auditions for “Almost, Maine”

T

he Theatre Company of Saugus (TCS) is excited to announce auditions for our upcoming winter show, “Almost, Maine,” a comic drama by John Cariani. This show is one of the most often produced by community theatres and schools.

From the original New York Times review: “Nine interlocking love stories all happen in the same New England town on the same moonless night.

The short, starry-eyed vignettes ... focus on making literal the idioms of love. They alternate beautiful, evocative prose with stutteringly awkward exchanges and often very funny (if sometimes predictable) sight gags. There’s a literal falling-inlove bit that involves repeated, uncontrollable, weak-kneed crashes to the floor. There’s a heart-turned-to-stone bit, in which a repairman promises to mend a shattered heart clattering around in a sandwich bag.

The rules of this world are systematically different from ours, but still somehow recognizable – almost as if they were mistranslated when converted into the Down East vernacular.”

scheduled for Thursday, December 14 and Monday, December 18. Callback auditions will be on Tuesday, December 19. Each session will start at 7:00 p.m.

The director is Matt Garlin.

Performances are scheduled for the third and fourth weekends of February 2018, on February 16-17-18 and 23-24-25. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons and on Monday and Thursday evenings. The first rehearsal will be on Thursday, December 21, 2017. Rehearsals will continue after the New Year holiday. The location of auditions, rehearsals, and performances is the American Legion Post 210/44 Taylor St. in Saugus, Mass.

There are roles for nine women and 10 men. In most productions a few actors each play multiple roles. All roles are open.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a two-minute monologue, comic or serious, that demonstrates their dramatic range. There will also be cold readings from the script.

he Saugus High School girls’ basketball team lost their season opener to St. Mary’s last Friday night, 5837. Saugus competed well and were down by one with 10 minutes to go, but couldn’t sustain a rally to turn the tables.

“It was definitely closer than the final would suggest,” said Sachems coach Mark Schruender. “We clawed back and had the possession chances to take the lead, but I think we ran out of gas during our run.”

Alessia Salzillo led scoring for Saugus with 10 points. Molly Granara had seven points and eight rebounds. Shaylin Groark had five points.

“I was happy with the rebounding,” Schruender said.

“We had a scrimmage earlier in the week, and we really need to clean it up. I thought we did …

We’re a guard-oriented team, so every player can play guard to some degree. We have to box out, and it was good to see kids commit to boxing out.”

Saugus’s next game is tonight at Everett. It’s expected to include the return of Marisa Stockwell, who has been sidelined for the last two seasons with a

A history of high turnover If he works through the duration of his new contract, Crabtree would become the first town manager to serve Saugus for a decade in the history of its current form of government (town manager/Representative Town Meeting), which dates back to 1948.

Former Town Manager Andrew Bisignani (2003-2012) served about nine years -- the longest of any town manager’s reign during 69 years. Seventeen regular town managers were in office less time than what Crabtree has served. Their service ranged from a year to five years; many of them for just half that period, which earned Saugus the reputation of being “the graveyard for town managers.”

Crabtree is a fourth generation Saugus resident. He and his wife, Christina, have three young children. He is a Saugus High School graduate from the class of 1988.

He has been town manager for close to six years. Previously, he served as chairman of

the Saugus Board of Selectmen and was a town police officer for more than a decade.

Crabtree holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management with a concentration in accounting from Boston University and a juris doctor from New England School of Law. He clerked for a Superior Court judge and worked as an accountant for a Boston law firm before starting his own Saugus law practice. He has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar since December of 2004.

Crabtree has frequently thanked the board publicly for backing him after he got fired.

He credited the incumbent members’ support which eventually led to the successful 2015 recall of the four selectmen who voted to fire him in the fall of 2014. Crabtree got his job back soon after the current Board of Selectmen took office.

During the past political campaign, selectmen ran in tandem.

They credited the town manager for being instrumental in many of the town’s accomplishments during their time on the board.

Vitamins and minerals are helper nutrients. These helper nutrients are crucial for proper body functions. Several nutrients are especially important. These include folate, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Following a healthy eating pattern consisting of nutrient rich foods is ideal for furnishing these important nutrient helpers. Here are a few foods that are good sources.

his past week wildfires that have spanned from Ventura to San Diego County have devastated California and its inhabitants. Six wildfires have scorched 141,000 acres over four counties in Southern California and more are expected due to dry air and strong winds forecasted for the region through Sunday, 12/10/17. The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says that at least 5,700 firefighters are working

to contain the massive wildfires and that the fires have forced 190,000 people out of their homes. Officials have shut down schools in 16 counties, and Gov. Jerry Brown issued an emergency proclamation for Santa Barbara and San Diego Counties. The declarations help free state resources, such as the National Guard, to support response efforts. He’s also requested federal assistance to supplement state and local emergency response, which shows that officials in California

place him for now and the beginning of an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee into allegations in the Boston Globe that Rosenberg’s husband, Bryon Hefner, groped three men and kissed another one against his will. The Globe story also included claims that Hefner has said he speaks for Rosenberg and talks about Senate business with legislators and their staffs.

“Choices had to be made and today we’ve chosen to move on and to move forward,” Chandler said. “What’s most important right now is that we work towards a swift and resolute conclusion to this whole sad event.” Chandler has stated that she plans only to serve as interim president and to step down when Rosenberg returns, or a new Senate president is elected.”

“I have repeatedly made clear that Bryon was to have no influence on what happens in the Senate,” said Rosenberg. “He has no influence over policy, the internal operations of the Senate, or any Senate-related business.

If Bryon claimed to have influence over my decisions or over the Senate, he should not have said that. It is simply not true.”

The Senate empowered the Ethics Committee to begin the investigation of the sexual assault charges against Hefner, whether Rosenberg violated any rules of the Senate and if Hefner did have any influence over what happens in the Senate.

“I think it’s really important that this gets started,” said Gov. Charlie Baker.“It’s going to be really important for Chandler and for all of the members of the Ethics Committee to demonstrate by both who they choose and what the rules are that whoever it is that’s conducting this investigation has the latitude and the independence to provide comfort to those people who are going to come forward who were victimized -- that they won’t suffer repercussions for doing so.”

“I wish to reemphasize that the most important thing is to make sure that anyone who may have been hurt has every assurance that they can turn to whatever authority they feel comfortable with, with absolutely no fear of retribution, and to restore confidence in the Senate,”said Rosenberg in a written statement.

“During my leave of absence from being Senate president, I look forward to a thorough, fair, and independent investigation.

ing this opportunity and have every confidence that the Acting President will help the Senate focus on a robust agenda for 2018.”

“I am deeply disturbed by these allegations which jeopardize the integrity of the Senate,” said Sen. Michael Rodrigues (DWestport), chairman of the Ethics Committee. “Sexual harassment and assault have no place in the Massachusetts state Senate or any workplace. I am committed to a fair and thorough review of the facts as well as a process that ensures confidentiality for any person who has any information to report on sexual harassment or sexual assaults.”

The Senate cannot bring criminal charges against anyone.

However, Attorney General Maura Healey and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley issued a joint statement that encourages victims to come forward.

“We ask anyone with this information to contact either office, and we remind every survivor of sexual assault that they can count on us to provide a safe, respectful, victim-centered environment, no matter what the circumstances might be.” said the two prosecutors. “Sexual assault is a crime and we want to send a clear message that harassment and assault of any kind will not be tolerated.”

No one knows if Rosenberg’s will return as Senate president or whether the Senate will elect a new permanent one. Everything hinges on the outcome of the probe. However, “just in case,” four senators are said to be already jockeying for votes for Senate President: Sens. Sal DiDomenico (D-Everett), Linda Dorcena Forry (D-Boston), Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) and Eileen Donoghue. (D-Lowell).

Here are the votes of local senators on Chandler’s election, opening the investigation and recusing Rosenberg and his staff from all decisions relating to the investigation.

CHANDLER ELECTED SENATE PRESIDENT Senate 31-6, elected Sen. Harriette Chandler as president. The vote, as expected, was straight along party lines with all the Democrats voting for Chandler and all Republicans casting their vote for Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester).

tain a special investigator to investigate the question of whether Rosenberg violated the rules of the Senate. The investigation is in response to claims that Hefner bragged that he has influence over Rosenberg, speaks for him and talks about Senate business with legislators and their staffs.

Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible latenight sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.
