The conflict dates back to the summer of 2014 when the union complained to city officials that Malden was behind in its payments to police officers for detail work. The union asked for a writ-

ten explanation and all outstanding detail pay. City officials shrugged and said they weren’t responsible for unpaid details because the work was done for third-party contractors, not the city. In January 2015, the union filed a wide-ranging complaint against the City of Malden in Superior Court. In addition to claiming the city owed Malden cops $410,000 for past detail work, the union
