he towering nutcrackers that stand guard on the first floor of the MEG Building seem to be a huge hit at this 8th Annual Christmas Tree Festival sponsored by the MEG Foundation.

But anybody who wanders upstairs into the North Pole Room anchored by a large wooden sleigh where a Santa Claus sits might think that’s the main attraction. There will also be a live Nativity Scene that is set to be on display on the front lawn of the MEG Building this weekend. he Annual Town Meeting is still months away.

But Precinct 6 member William S. Brown said he is already planning to introduce several articles that he hopes will make Saugus streets safer for pedestrians and drivers.

“I think a 25 mph speed limit – unless otherwise posted – is a pretty good idea and something I’d like to see,” Brown

“I’m going to request that the town manager and the Board of Selectmen take the necessary steps to enact 25 mph as the speed limit throughout town – with exemptions for certain streets,” he said.

Brown is so convinced that the speed limit is crucial to improving pedestrian and traffic safety throughout the community that he’s among those residents who are sporting new bumper stickers on their trucks. “CITIZENS FOR A SAFER SAUGUS,” declares the red, white and black bumper stick-

er that he’s attached to an SUV and a pickup truck parked at his School Street home. It also advocates “25 MPH TOWN-WIDE.” The bumper stickers began popping up earlier this month.

Brown said he and Bob Davis are organizing the grassroots effort to band citizens together to lobby for new regulations and more aggressive enforcement of existing traffic regulations. “There’s a lot more to be done on this issue,” Brown noted.

ment (with a band and serving hot chocolate and cookies) and the Tree Festival continues tonight (Dec. 14) from 5-8 p.m. and tomorrow night (Dec. 15) from 4-8 p.m. at 54-58 Essex St. in Saugus.

When visitors walk into the North Pole Room, they will smell an evergreen smell that will remind them of the days when they go to pick out a Christmas tree.

More than 50 decorated Christmas trees and gift baskets chock full of goodies will be on display. Admission is free and tickets will be sold to take chances on a list of the beautiful trees and other gifts. Money raised will go toward supporting foundation programs and preservation of the century-old schoolhouse.

Playing a big role in this year’s festival is Robert Willwerth, a Saugus carpenter who made the two 8 ½’ tall nutcrackers.

“It took me a couple of weeks to make it from a lot of building materials: wood, PVC pipe, Styrofoam,” said Willwerth, who is also a church member. Willwerth said he made each nut-

cracker so it could it be broken down into smaller parts for easy storage.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Kathy Giannetta, a MEG Foundation board of directors member who was dressed as an elf as she welcomed guests and served them hot chocolate and cookies.

“We’re working to get a lift in the building for disabled people,” she said.

The Xmas Calendar Saugus has a number of holiday events coming up, including the following: • Saugus Boy Scout Troop 62’s Annual Christmas Tree Sale is underway in the lot on Salem Turnpike (Route 107) at the Ballard Street lights. Residents will be able to buy holiday wreaths and trees – from tabletop size to eight feet tall – Monday through Friday: 4 to 10 p.m.; and Saturday through Sunday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., through Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) or until the trees and wreaths are sold out. Delivery is available and all proceeds support the scouts of Troop 62.

• A large gift-wrapped open box has been set up in the lobby of Town Hall to help collect donations for the toy drive being organized by Saugus fire-

MEG Foundation President discusses group’s mission to preserve and restore a building renamed after a beloved Saugus educator Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down with Janice K. Jarosz, organizer and leader of the MEG Foundation, which initiated efforts to save the Marleah Elizabeth Graves School – which was named after a legendary Saugus educator. We asked her about the history of the century-old building, which was known originally as the Bond School, but was known for most of its life as the Cliftondale School. The interview focused on the building’s colorful past, present and future.

Jarosz, a Saugus native and 1961 graduate of Saugus High School, has deep family roots in her hometown. Her ancestors helped settle the town in 1812, and her great-grandfather (Samuel Parker) sold property to the town for Town Hall. A proud Saugonian, she has worked on numerous community and civic projects over the years. She received the Woman of the Year Award during the 2008 Founders Day celebration because of her contributions to the betterment of the community. She is a former Town Meeting Member, a member of the Board of Selectmen and was the first chair of the Saugus Recycling Committee. She worked eight years as clerk of the Board of Selectmen. And for the last decade, she has been president of the MEG Foundation. She and her late husband Ronald Jarosz, who passed away 22 years ago, had four children: Lisa Parker, Thomas Jarosz, Jay Jarosz and the late Eric Jarosz. She has 10 grandchildren. She owns her late husband’s business, Nevron Plastics.

Some highlights of the interview follow.

A BUILDING WORTH SAVING: Janice K. Jarosz, president of the Maleah E. Q: Please tell me a little bit about the MEG Building.

A: In 1893 it was built. It took one year to build this building.

Q: So, this was originally a schoolhouse.

A: It was a four-classroom school.

Q: So, it was a neighborhood school.

A: It was a neighborhood school. The kids would walk to school. They would walk home to lunch and then come back for the afternoon. It was 35 to 40 students in each classroom.

Ms. Graves was the most popular teacher here. She taught here for 47 years, and the school was eventually named after her – the Marleah Elizabeth Graves School – thanks to Peter Manoogian, who did that. The school functioned til 1981 and was closed. And

they sublet it to the Northshore Consortium, and they were here for 10 years, and then it was left vacant and the Civil Defense would be using this place, and then it was left abandoned, and eventually a lot of pigeons came in here. A lot of the windows were bro-

ken. There was graffiti all over the place. Kids were partying in here.

Q: So, how did you get involved with this building?

A: I didn’t go to this school.

To tell you the truth, I don’t know how I got involved with it. Maybe I read something in the paper about it. I don’t remember. They were going to tear it down. They put bids out, and the bids came back kind of weak, so it was just left there, so one day, somehow, I came into this school. When they were going to tear it down, I talked to some of my friends, so we went in here; it was a disgrace.

It was terrible, but we saw the beauty of it. We saw the beautiful woodwork. We saw the potential of it. We saw what could be done.

Q: So, how bad was it?

A: It was in terrible condition. It was very bad: The windows were broken; there was no heat; just pigeons, graffiti and junk.

Mister Nifty

T

his week we look at a living athlete, Number 16 for the Boston Bruins, whose nickname is Mr. Nifty, yes Rick Middleton. Rick was born on December 4, 1953, a little more than a year after I graduated from Saugus High.

He was drafted 14th in the National Hockey League (NHL) draft in the first round by the New York Rangers in 1973, a right winger. Ricky was also drafted by the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the World Hockey Association. He was with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), a junior league for amateur players under the age of 21. With the Generals in 1971 he had 36 goals in 53 games played, and the 34 assists pushed his points to 70. The following season he had 67 goals in 62 games played and 70 assists for 137 points. Middleton was with the Rangers farm team in 1973, the Providence Reds, where he had 36 goals and 48 assists for 84 points in 62 games played.

He had two seasons with the Rangers, notching 46 goals and 44 assists for 90 points in 412 games played.

ASKS |from page 3 Q: So, you had an abandoned building that was neglected, so was the inside littered with hypo needles and frequented by drug addicts and the homeless?

A: Yeah. There was all that stuff. The Civil Defense had put beds upstairs for an emergency.

There were twin beds upstairs.

Maybe there were 15 to 20 of us. We were with town officials and the building inspector.

Some people said, “It can’t be done. ... It’s ridiculous. It should be gone. There is no way you are going to do this.” So, when my friends and I heard this, we said, “Yes we can. … We’re going to do it.” And the response was great. We started off trying to figure out what should come first – the chicken or the egg – the heat or the water. We did the windows first. We started out with the windows. We founded the M.E.G. Foundation in 2007. A lot of people helped us, and we got the windows in.

That was our first project.

It was Dennis Gould from the Good Neighbor Fund at GE who

up Ken Hodge in the trade. The Bruins came out on top of the trade, as Hodge was 10 years older and only completed the single season for the Rangers.

During his time in Boston under the direction of head coach Don Cherry, Middleton became a two-way player after all his previous years as primarily an offensive player. He scored a hat trick (three goals) in his first game as a Bruin, and was an offensive star for the next 18 seasons. His Bruin career totals were 448 goals and 540 assists for 988 points, quite a career. In the 1981-1982 season, his best, he scored 51 goals and added 43 assists for a total of 94 points. He had five straight seasons of at least 40 goals as a Bruin.

Middleton played for Team Canada on the international level in 1981 and again in 1984.

During this period he scored five goals and six assists for 11 points in 14 games played.

Middleton won the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHA Outstanding Player in 1973, and the American Hockey League (AHL) First All-Star Team in 1974. Also in 1974 he won the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL Rookie of the Year. In the NHL he was selected to the All-Star Team saw our plight and gave us $50,000, and we put in a brandnew heating system. We went from oil to gas, so that was the second step. We got grants from Wheelabrator. They were very helpful. A lot of citizens came forward, especially those who attended this school.

Q: How many members are involved with the MEG (Foundation)?

A: I think there are 12 of us, and they come from all over.

Interestingly, this Marleah Graves … her nephew is David Mugar from Boston.

Q: Oh. I know him.

A: Everybody knows him.

Q: He’s a philanthropist and has been involved with the fireworks (July 4 in Boston).

A: Yes, the fireworks and a lot of other things, so they were very helpful to us as well.

The Mugar family still maintains a house on First Street.

It’s still in the family, but anyhow, Charles H. Bond donated this property to the town a long time ago; also a church and a lot of other buildings.

In retirement he became the President of the Bruins Alumni and a partner in Orlando Energy Systems. He joined the New England High School Sports Showcases, showing off high school hockey players. He also was a studio analyst for the Bruins games on NESN. I got to meet Mr. Nifty at St. John’s Prep, where my son Thomas went to high school.

During a spring fete Middleton was a guest and at lunch time walked down the line greeting people, and I got to shake his hand. There will never be a player that I admire more than Mr. Nifty.

This was originally called the Bond School and then the Cliftondale School. Then because of Peter Manoogian and his group, the building was renamed the Marleah Elizabeth Graves (M.E.G.) Building (in 1994).

Q: So, from your perspective, what is the most interesting aspect of this building?

A: I think the most interesting and the most inspiring thing about this building is the people that use this building. We’ve had birthday parties here. We’ve had collations after funerals. We’re going to have a 90th birthday party next week. Everybody that uses this building has a wonderful time.

It’s like a big old mansion. It’s your home, and there’s no other place around like this. Our fees are very reasonable. They come in here and they use the kitchen. They can cook a meal and serve it out there. We have tables, and it’s just so wonderful. It’s just a great feeling because there is nothing else in Saugus like this, or around.

Q: What feature though – maybe something about the architecture or the character of the building – makes it special? What’s the reason for the charm or the allure?

A: The woodwork. The blackboards come from Italy, and every 10 years, when the building was active, the town would come in and refurbish them and take care of them. You had a janitor here that worked for about 30 years here. He loved this building, and every spring he would wax and polish the woodwork and kept it up. It

Making Chester mobile again Veterans Relief Fund helps disabled Saugonian get wheelchair back on the street

U

.S. Navy veteran Chester Stentiford found himself cooped up inside his apartment since the spring because he couldn’t afford to fix his motorized scooter.

“Beginning in the spring, it was out of commission when I tried to use it,” said Stentiford, 69, a Saugus native who served four years during the Vietnam

War era.

“It would cost me $150 to replace each of the two batteries and some other stuff I needed to get it going again,” he said.

Stentiford also learned that his battery charger was defective.

“I just didn’t have the money to get it done, so I couldn’t use it.”

While Stentiford’s scooter was out of commission, he was confined to the small apart-

ment. He would need a visit from a friend or relative to push his wheelchair if he wanted to leave his home and enjoy the outdoors. “I could take the [manual] wheelchair out myself, but couldn’t go very far.”

It took a couple of veteran buddies and a relatively unknown local fund for special emergencies to make Stentiford mobile again, according to Veterans’ Services Officer Jay Pinette. Stentiford reached out to a friend, Marine and National Guard veteran Marty Graney, who had initially gotten him the motor scooter from the Disabled American Veterans a few years earlier. Greater contacted Pinette, who researched what was available.

Pinette said he leaned that the Saugus Veterans Relief Fund was an option. “To my knowledge, that fund has never been used before,” Pinette said.

“I’m sure that situations like this were exactly why this fund was started. But it didn’t happen until Marty brought the situation to light,” he said.

Pinette credited the local Batteries + Bulbs store for offering some technical expertise and a Veterans’ discount on the batteries.

Graney worked with another friend and U.S. Navy veteran, Joe Dion, to handle the repair.

With the help of Graney and Dion, Stentiford’s motorized scooter was working again.

“It was a godsend,” Stentiford said. “I don’t know what I’ve done without these guys.

When the weather gets good, I can move around again out of the house.”

Dion, a 1962 Saugus High School graduate who served three years as a machinist mate in the Navy, said there needs to be more public awareness about the Saugus Veterans Re-

lief Fund. “It’s a great program, but we need to get the knowledge about it out there and make it available to the veterans who need it,” said Dion, who is senior vice commander of American Legion Post 210.

“Now that he has the scooter, he’s regained the level of independence that he once had,” Pinette added.

“When all was said and done, Mr. Graney and Mr. Dion were able to return the scooter to operation, which provided Mr. Stentiford with a greater freedom and the ability to resume a more normal level of activity,” Pinette said.

The Saugus Veterans Relief Fund was established in 2016 as a result of legislation initiated by state Rep. Donald Wong.

The new law helped create a voluntary method for the pub-

lic to contribute to the relief fund when they pay their taxes. There is a check-off box on the tax form that can be used to direct additional funds to the relief fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide support for Veterans and their dependents facing more immediate/emergent needs with food, transportation, heating repair/ expenses and other emergency needs. The fund was envisioned to provide a one-time infusion of funds in urgent/ emergency conditions, according to Pinette.

evin Andrews is one of those guys who loves playing Santa Claus.

It all started back when he was 18 and he received a handmade Santa Claus suit from an aunt. “I still have that suit and have been playing Santa Claus ever since,” said Andrews, now 50, and a Santa who also spearheads toy drives for needy children.

Andrews, a 1986 Saugus High School graduate, has volunteered 32 years as a Pop Warner coach. He’s also spent thousands of hours over the years working for a number of youth sports organizations – American Little League, National Little League, Town Team Basketball, Saugus Youth Hockey and JV Hockey for Saugus High School – all for free.

“I know so many kids in this town that when I decided to do toy drives, I knew that getting the toys wasn’t going to be a problem,” Andrews said.

“Getting toys wasn’t an issue. I knew I wanted to help, but I didn’t know how to find the families that need that help around Christmas,” he said.

Since teaming up with Alison Riley and Saugus We Care three years ago, that’s no longer a problem. Andrews just focuses on getting the toys while Riley uses her network to find the

“Our biggest drive was three years ago when we had close to 100 kids from 31 or 32 families,” he said.

Andrews vowed that he will continue doing the toy drive as long as he can – and as long as he knows there is a need for it.

“It’s very humbling,” he said, recalling the case of a father he met two years ago who was

When I was a selectmen’s clerk in the old Town Hall, right outside the selectmen’s office, this guy on the wall was looking at me all of the time. And some people told me that it was Mr. Carnegie, who gave us the money for the library. People would say “That’s Andrew Carnegie.” And I told people that’s who it was. I didn’t know any better.

So, I went to the church next door a couple of years later, and I saw his picture and it said Charles Bond, because they were honoring him because he gave them the property. It was just a small replica of the original that once hung at Town Hall and is presently in the Lobby of the MEG. And I say hello to Mr. Bond every day. When I worked at Town Hall, he kept “looking” at me as the portrait hung in the front lobby of the Town Hall before renovations, facing right into the Selectmen’s office where I sat for eight years!

I am so happy to have been able to acknowledge who he really was.

But, getting back to the MEG Building, a lot of things have happened here in the basement. We had the North Shore Paranormal people [Society] in here.

Q: Well, is the building haunted or inhabited by spirits?

A: It’s inhabited by spirits –

raising seven children by himself. “I had seven contractorsized bags of toys left when I showed up at his house,” Andrews said.

“He asked me what bag was his. When I said ‘all of them,’ he burst into tears. It’s times like that, you’re glad that you do it.

As long as I keep helping, I will keep doing it. We’ve helped well over a hundred families since I started doing this five years ago.”

He vowed to keep playing not haunted, because haunted is a negative word. It’s very spiritual. We have Mr. Bond’s spirit here, because we couldn’t have done this alone.

Q: Well, tell me about the spirit, because I’ve heard various stories about it.

A: You tell me what you heard. C’mon!

Q: Well, that he’s walking around the building …

A: That’s what I attribute to the success of this building, and we believe in him.

Q: So, the paranormal people did confirm there are spirits in this place?

A: Yeah. It was about four or five years ago, and they set up equipment downstairs, and they said “Janice? Do you want to come and see what we found out?” And I said, “Sure,” because I don’t have a problem with spirits. Because I wouldn’t be here if I did! I saw the orbs flying by. I heard the voices.

And my daughter was washing windows one day in the lobby, all by herself. And somebody said “hello.” She turned around to say “hello” back and nobody was there, so she

Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree and selectmen have stressed that the Town of Saugus will be considering the reduction of speed on streets across town once it receives the results from a special traffic study that the Town has initiated. But Brown and others said he doesn’t think town officials are moving fast enough. So, he has resolved to keep the fo-

cus on improving traffic safety when the Annual Town Meeting convenes next May. He said he will research and draft articles related to traffic safety.

Meanwhile, Bob Davis, who has been working with Brown, issued a brief statement yesterday to announce the formal organization of his group. “A group of Essex Street citizens are actively forming a group called Citizens for a Safer Saugus,” the one-page press release notes.

“Membership is open to any citizen of Saugus who believes immediate action needs to be taken to reduce the speed of traffic in Saugus to 25 mph,

THE SOUNDS OF SAUGUS

H

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

Transparency is good I find it refreshing that Saugus Public Schools Superintendent David DeRuosi Jr. has begun inviting local reporters into classrooms recently to offer them glimpse at teachers and students interacting and then inviting reporters to ask questions.

This is indeed a good development for all parties, and hopefully a departure from Dr. DeRuosi’s earlier days.

There have been a couple of times in recent years where I have requested interviews with teachers and staff, for instance, interviewing new principals or administrators at the outset of a new academic year -- and I have not gotten a response back.

Indeed, the best way to write a meaningful story about local education is to be able to walk into the school and the classrooms and talk to real people involved in the education process.

So, those last two instances, where Dr. DeRuosi has invited the press into classroom settings are very welcome.

Hopefully, citizens who are curious about how their tax dollars are being spent will one day have the opportunity for similar situations.

Another Methuen connection It is indeed a small world.

I learned last week while interviewing Ryan Barry in the “YES Club,” at the Belmonte Middle School that we share a couple of connections.

We both live in Methuen, a small city just north of Lawrence in northern Essex County. And we’re both graduates of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

I had interview Ryan’s father on a couple of occasions -- William Barry, Methuen’s assistant fire chief.

But, Ryan and I never met before last week.

He’s a 2016 UMass-Amherst graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. I graduated from UMass-Amherst in 1974 Volunteer for your town Here’s another opportunity to get involved in local government.

The Christmas trees are back!

Boy Scout Troop 62 is at it again this year, selling Christmas trees of all dimensions and other holiday stuff at the lot adjacent to the northbound lane of Route 107, just as turn left at the traffic lights at the intersection of Ballard Street. Storage LLC has generously provided use of the lot without charge and Armand and Michael of AM Details are providing electricity.

The lot will be open at 20 Salem Turnpike Route 107, Monday through Friday 4-10 and Saturday and Sunday 9-9, now through Christmas Eve -- or until the trees sell out. Troop 62 offers delivery and also free tie down service. The troop will sell balsam trees and wreaths as well as kissing balls tree stands and other accessories.

Tree sizes range from table tops to 9 foot tall trees. Larger ones can be ordered by request and the scouts will also be selling wreaths from 12” to 48”.

Q: How would you describe this building? The architecture and the style?

A: Well, it’s Romanesque with very high ceilings. They were so smart back then. They built the classrooms facing the sun in the morning, so it was warm. In 1890, you didn’t have any central heating. They didn’t have electricity then, either.

Q: So they got to use the sun.

A: They used the sun. Exactly. In 1930 I think they put bathrooms down in the basement. And there were six oth-

Q: So, what is the future of this building?

A: The future? Our next project ... we want to become handicapped-accessible.

Q: And that would be from the funds you’re raising from the Christmas Festival?

A: The funds we’re raising pays for the heat, which is about $9,000 to $10,000.

Q: And some of the money you are raising would go toward a lift?

A: Yes. That’s what we need.

The former town clerk wanted to use this place for voting, but we couldn’t comply, because we don’t have it handicappedaccessible, so that’s our next project. A lift. We have a price.

We’ve had people in here looking at it. We had an opportunity to have that Salem employment agency, which is staterun, that helps people look for jobs, locate in here, but we couldn’t do it because it’s not handicapped-accessible. So many people from Saugus can’t travel to Salem, so this would have been a great thing for the town – to have that.

Q: The town could be making more use of this. Right?

A: For meetings and programs – yeah – but it has to be handicapped-accessible. That’s the holdup right now.

Q: So, what do you see for the potential use of this building?

A: More and more people are using it. Right now, we’re teaching cursive writing classes here.

We have art classes here. We have a downstairs that we just finished fixing up.

Q: Anything going on with the library? Because you figure they would be allies with you on something like this.

A: Oh yeah, but we’re not handicapped-accessible. That’s the problem. We’re grandfathered-in to use it, but in order to have other town functions, we need to be handicappedaccessible. If we had the lift, I’d like to see us having meetings, like the Conservation Commission. It would be much more conducive here.

What else would you like to know about?

Q: Tell me a little bit about the festival [MEG’s Annual Christmas Tree Festival] that’s going on this weekend.

A: It’s our eighth year. We have wonderful trees. People are very generous.

Q: To me, this is something special … when I was a kid, I remember going to Edaville Trolley. Well, this is sort of like a local attraction during the holidays. It’s kind of neat, the way it’s set up. It’s a destination for families, and you don’t have to pay for the Santa Claus pictures.

A: Everything is free.

Q: And it smells and looks and tastes like Christmas.

A: On Friday night, the kids were all running around looking for Santa Claus, which was so nice. You have that big room

with the North Pole, and downstairs you have the trees on display. And you have the Nativity Scene in the front yard.

Q: And you are going to have live animals on Friday night?

A: Just Friday – sheep, lambs and maybe a baby calf. I’m not quite sure what package we’re getting, but they’ll be out there.

The first year we had the Nativity Scene, which was four years ago. People were stopping. They had not seen a nativity scene for a long time. They would stop and beep the horn and take pictures. It was such a joyful occasion.

Q: It’s great that you have this festival and have it on a date where it’s not competing with the town’s tree lighting event.

A: Yes, we don’t want to conflict.

Q: What’s your fondest memory of this building? Have you had any friendly encounters with Mr. Bond?

A: Mr. Bond? No. Not directly, but he knows I am around. And I know he’s around. We have a mutual understanding. I was very friendly with his greatgrandson, Charles Bond. He lived in Jefferson, N.H. He and I were very close, and he sent me a lot of memorabilia – beautiful letters. I have all kinds of stuff that belonged to Mr. Bond, and I’m trying to put it together in a booklet. The miracle is that it’s [the MEG Building] here right now. It’s beautiful. It’s amazing and so many people helped do this. I think that’s the best part – people that are involved in this are so wonderful and they feel so good about it. I think that maybe it’s a sense of accomplishment. And what they did mattered and they made something of this place. And it wasn’t just one person. It took a concerted effort.

Q: How many people involved – all totaled?

A: Hundreds: Hundreds of people made donations; people came here to do volunteer work – paint – anything that needed to be done. And that’s the magic of it. I don’t know how we did it! I mean, I had no background here. I didn’t even go to this school.

Q: What drew you to this building in the first place?

A: I have no idea. You know what I think it could be – all those years that I said that Mr. Bond was Carnegie, he got even with me. He brought me over here, but seriously, I don’t remember why I got involved with this project to begin with.

Q: So when you came over here and saw this place was a mess, you really hadn’t been in the building before?

A: Right. Never.

Q: So, that was your first visit?

A: First visit, and I don’t know why I visited. I don’t remember why I came here, but I did get here, and I did come here

Qualified Residence Mortgage Interest Deduction

T

he Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 imposes a lower dollar limit on mortgages qualifying for the home mortgage interest deduction. For tax years beginning on January 1st of 2018, taxpayers may only deduct mortgage interest on $750,000 of qualified residence interest loans. This is for a married filing joint tax return or head of household. The limit is only $375,000 for married individuals filing separately. This limit applies to the combined amount of loans used to purchase, construct or substantially improve the taxpayer’s principal residence and vacation home.

As an example, let’s assume Jim Bowie took out a mortgage in February of 2018 in the amount of $500,000 to purchase his principal residence in the amount of $900,000. In March of 2018, Jim takes out a $250,000 equity line of credit in order to construct a three-car garage.

Both mortgages are secured by the principal residence and the sum of the two mortgages does not exceed the purchase price plus improvements.

Since the total of both mortgages does not exceed $750,000, all of the mortgage interest is deductible on Schedule A as an itemized deduction.

If Jim has used the pro-

ceeds of the equity line of credit to pay off college loans and personal credit cards, then none of the mortgage interest associated with the equity line of credit would be deductible.

As another example, let’s assume Davie Crockett takes out a $500,000 mortgage in May of 2018 to purchase his principal residence and that the mortgage is secured by this residence. In June of 2018 Davie takes out a $250,000 mor tgage to purchase a vacation home down the Cape.

This mortgage is secured by the vacation home.

Since the total of both mortgages does not exceed $750,000, all of the mortgage interest is deductible. However, if Davie took out an equity line of credit on his principal residence to purchase the vacation home, none of the mortgage interest on the equity line of credit would be deductible.

As a final example, let’s assume George A. Custer take out a $500,000 mortgage in April of 2018 to purchase his principal residence. The mortgage is secured by his principal residence. Then, in August of 2018, George takes out a $500,000 mortgage to purchase a vacation home in Florida. The mortgage is secured by the Florida vacation home. Since the total of the two mortgages exceeds $750,000, not all of the mortgage interest would be deductible on his 2018 tax return. Seventy five percent of the mortgage interest would be deductible. $750,000 divided by $1,000,000.

Have You Checked Your Social Security Statement for Errors?

Dear Savvy Senior, I’ve heard that Social Security sometimes makes mistakes on our earnings record, which can reduce our monthly retirement benefits. How can I make sure this doesn’t happen to me?

Paranoid Paul Dear Paul, Mistakes in the Social Security earnings record are actually fairly common. Your Social Security benefits are based on your highest 35 years of earnings history. So, if your earnings for any particular year are underreported, it will reduce your benefits.

These errors typically occur because your employer either reported your earnings incorrectly or reported your earnings using the wrong name or Social Security number. Or if you got married or divorced and changed your name but did not report the change to Social Security.

Check Your Statement The best way to keep an eye on your benefits and avoid any possible mistakes is to carefully review your Social Security statement every year. To do this, go to SSA.gov/myaccount and then print your statement out on paper.

If you’re age 60 or older and not yet receiving benefits and don’t have a My Social Security account online, your statement will actually be mailed to you about three months before your birthday.

Your Social Security statement lists your earnings record for each year of employment and estimates the benefits you and your family may receive as a result of those earnings.

Once you get your statement, take some time to verify its accuracy by comparing the earnings listed on your statement with your own tax records or W-2 statements. You have to correct errors within 3 years, 3 months and 15 days following the year of the mistake. If you happen to spot a discrepancy within that time limit, follow these steps.

First, call your nearest Social Security office (see SSA.gov/locator or call 800-772-1213 to get the number) to report the error. Some corrections can be made over the phone, or you may need to schedule an appointment and go in with copies of your W-2 forms or tax returns to prove the mistake, or you can mail it in.

If you suspect a discrepancy but don’t have backup records, the Social Security Administration (SSA) may be able to use your employment information to search its records and correct mistakes. If the SSA can’t locate your records, you’ll need to contact the employer to obtain a copy of your W-2 for the year in question.

Once your earnings record is corrected, Social Security will send you a confirming letter. If you don’t receive the confirmation within three months, contact them again, and double-check the correction by making sure it appears on your Social Security statement.

If corrections aren’t made on your statement start an appeals process (see SSA.gov/pubs/EN-05-10041.pdf).

Other Mistakes Social Security earnings miscalculations can also happen if there’s a mistake in your current mailing address that the IRS has on file for you. Check your federal tax returns for this possible error, especially if you’ve moved recently.

To correct your address, contact the IRS at 800-829-3676 and ask them to mail you the “Change of Address” form 8822, or print it off at IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822.pdf, fill it out and mail it back to the address on the form.

Other factors that can cause mistakes are if your name or date of birth in the SSA records isn’t the same as it appears in the IRS files. So double-check your Social Security statement for these possible mishaps, and if you find an error call the 800-772-1213 and ask for Form SS-5, “Application for a Social Security Card,” and submit it with the correct information.

Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers.

They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.

Q: Do you charge anything?

A: We charge affordable rates. It all depends on the size of the function, how long they want to use it and what they want to do, but we try to make it as reasonable as possible. A lot of times people don’t have much money, and they want to have a funeral collation in here; we let them bring in their food and don’t charge them anything. It belongs to the town, and we’re just like little elves, running around and keeping it going. That’s all we’re doing.

We’re trying to keep it going and, hopefully, it will build and build and build. And if we get that lift in here, there will be a lot more things that we will be able to do.

Q: Anything else that you would like to say?

A: We are all volunteers devoting many hours in maintaining the building for the people of Saugus and elsewhere. We host birthday parties, private dinners for families, fundraisers for nonprofits, art and cursive classes and funeral collations, to name a few of the events. Obituaries

Lynn E. LaFerla t 65, of Methuen, passed away Monday, December 3, 2018 at her home. She was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Salvatore and Gladys (Valiquette) LaFerla. Lynn was raised in Saugus and was a graduate of Saugus High School. She also worked for many years at the Internal Revenue Service. Lynn was an active member of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Haverhill. She loved her church and devoted countless hours volunteering and helping others.

She was also a talented artist and a loving “Grammy” to her two grandchildren. Lynn was predeceased by her daughter, Claire Krupica. She is survived by her son, Nicholas Krupica and his wife Xochitl of Lowell; brothers, John Laferla, M.D. and his wife Susan of Maryland and Lawrence Laferla of Japan; sisters, Carol Duane and her husband David of Chelmsford and Barbara Hayes and her husband Peter of Methuen; several nephews and nieces; grandchildren, Zoey and Zachary.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
