Police report clears Coach Nalen of criminal misconduct, but he remains suspended from SHS football

A

Saugus Police Department investigation determined there is no evidence that Saugus High School football coach Anthony Nalen ordered one of his players to practice in his underwear in an alleged hazing incident last month.

“Although it may be perceived by some parents that this policy about practice attire has been inappropriately enforced at times, pending further evidence the current information gathered in this investigation does not amount to a crime,” Saugus Police Det. Sgt. Paul Vansteensburg wrote in the conclusion of his five-

page report.

But while Nalen’s lawyer was confident that the police report released Wednesday cleared his client of any misconduct, the second-year coach remained on paid leave. And at press time, yesterday, there was no indication if or when Nalen would be reinstated.

“I believe the administration owes him [Nalen] a public apology,” Revere Attorney Michael Castano said of the way his client has been treated by Saugus school officials.

“I have been assured in the past by phone and email that once the investigation was

later, Castano said he never received a response back from the school administration.

“We saw no reason why the coach wouldn’t be reinstated immediately,” Castano said.

“At this point, we’re just waiting to see if the administration does the right thing or not. But we’re still not being cooperated with by the administration,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr. declined comment on Nalen’s immediate and future status. And the Saugus Public Schools Athletic Department has begun advertising for a new assistant football coach amid reports that school officials fired the assistants after they refused to show up until Nalen is reinstated.

DeRuosi explains why he can’t talk In response to emails and telephone calls from The Saugus Advocate, DeRuosi emailed a copy of a one-page position letter dated Wednesday (Sept.

12) which appeared to be addressed to parents, staff, media and anyone who has questions about Nalen’s suspension.

The letter reads as follows: “With the recent media coverage of our high school football program, I have received many inquiries from parents regarding the team’s coaching staff.

“I have Michael Mabee filling in as acting head coach. Mr. Mabee is well known to our students as he has coached our middle school football program in the past. I am confident that Mr. Mabee will succeed as a coach, and a mentor to the young men and women on our team. He will be able to assist any and all new assistant coaches.

questions about the background behind the media stories. I am unable to discuss the specifics of the situation or details related to individual students or staff members.

It would not be fair for me to discuss this personnel issue in a public forum, or with the media. I can tell you that our school system’s first priority is the health, wellbeing, and education of our students. That priority guides all of our decisions and choices, and when we are made aware of a potential issue involving a student or staff member, we proceed carefully and thoughtfully – not hastily – to ensure we fully understand the situation and are equipped to react to it in an appropriate way. The best interest of our students and staff members demands that we proceed in such a deliberate fashion.

“Sincerely, “Superintendent “Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr.” The criminal investigation In a telephone interview Wednesday, Interim Police Chief Ronald Giorgetti stressed that the police probe “was conducted solely for a purpose,” which was to determine the validity of allegations about a hazing incident.

“It wasn’t conducted for any administrative reasons … We have concluded our investigation into the allegation of hazing with the information that was provided and determined there was no crime,” Chief Giorgetti said.

DeRuosi contacted the Police Department on Aug. 29 after hearing of “a possible hazing incident involving a football player and coach that occurred during a practice at the Belmonte Middle School field,” according to the police investigation report.

The superintendent told police he called the student’s mother on Aug. 28 to veri-

fy what he heard. “He learned that her son told her he had to practice in his underwear on the first day of practice, Friday, Aug. 17, because he was wearing the wrong color shorts,” Vansteensburg wrote in his report.

“He was told of a policy that the Football team has about practice attire; that being if players are not in full equipment/uniform they are to wear only school colors: red, white, black, or gray. If players are not in school team colors they are to change, but in this instance the player practiced in his underwear,” the report continued.

“Dr. DeRuosi went on to say that he already spoke with the head coach, Mr. Anthony Nalen, once about the incident and he denied knowledge of one of his players practicing in his underwear. He [DeRuosi] also explained that he was told of two other players practicing in their underwear last season under the same head coach. Dr. DeRuosi provided me with the names of parents and coaches that may have information regarding these incidents.”

The mother of the player involved in last month’s incident told Vansteensburg that she had been approached by two other parents “who stated the same thing happened to their children the previous season.”

When both parents were approached by the detective, they told similar stories. “Both her son and the other senior were told to either change into football pants or practice in their underwear and both ended up practicing in their boxers,” Vansteensburg wrote in his report, referring to an alleged incident last year.

“When she found out about this she was furious and wanted to confront the coach about it, but her son urged her not to.

There were about two weeks left in the season and her son told her he did not want to make a big deal out of it and wanted to just let it go,” Vansteensburg said.

A father contacted by the police detective told a similar story, according to the report, “stating that his son showed up

Three Saugus High School football co-captains speak out in support of Coach Nalen Editor’s Note: For this week’s interview, we sat down in Charlie’s Pizzeria with Saugus High School Football Co-Captains James Moise, Jake Morgante and Dante McGrane to talk about the picketing the football team was doing outside on Monday afternoon, near the rotary, in support of their head football coach, Anthony Nalen. The coach was suspended last month after allegations were made about alleged misconduct. The three players, all of them seniors, shared their concerns about how the coach’s suspension and a police investigation of an alleged hazing incident has adversely affected the team. They said the coach was wrongly accused of making a player practice in his underwear and that it was the player’s decision to practice in boxer shorts – something that few people noticed. They said they believed the coach was not aware of the player wearing boxer shorts. The student athletes also criticized the way school officials handled the situation, causing unnecessary anxiety for the players, their parents and the coaches. Some highlights of this week’s interview follow.

Q: Jake, please tell me why we are here at this demonstration today.

A: Because we want our head coach back.

Q: And what’s the feeling of the team? Do you have the whole team here?

A: Yes, we have the whole team here, with some parents and some kids we barely know, who have come to support the guy. The whole school knows how great of a guy he is.

Q: Okay, so what makes this coach so special?

amount of money. He buys us dinners. He brings his kids around us. I mean, his family is our family. I mean, what more could you ask of a guy?

He came in here knowing he was going to have to turn the program around and he did.

And he will.

Q: So, what happened? Why did he get suspended? What does the team know about why he got suspended?

A: Well, there was a player who violated the color code of the shorts. The color code is red, white, black or gray shorts. At the practice, a kid came out in blue shorts, I believe, and my coach asked him to go to the locker room and take the pads out of his practice pants and wear the white practice pants or to go change the color of his shorts.

The kid, on his own free will, went into the locker room and took the shorts off, and he had a long pair of boxers under them, and he thought that was the equivalent of a pair of shorts. And I believe

the boxers were red or black, and he came out and nobody knew he was in boxers because they looked exactly like shorts. And as it turns out, two days later, we didn’t have a coaching staff because of talk that the coach made a kid practice in a pair of boxers, which is absurd, because it never happened.

Q: So, you are saying that the coach didn’t tell him to practice in his boxer shorts – but rather the kid decided to do it himself?

A: Yes. Q: So, James, please tell me your thoughts about this situation?

A: Oh, this is just a troubling situation for the foot-

Detective says it’s tough to make a case Besides interviewing the superintendent, Vansteensburg said he questioned three parents and the coach about the allegations. The three alleged student victims declined to be interviewed by police. Without their testimony, police are unable to make a case.

“At this point in the investigation I do not believe the elements of any criminal offense has been met. Hazing is spelled out in the Massachusetts General Laws as when a suspect conducts a method of initiation into any student organization while willfully or recklessly endangering the physical or mental health of any person,” Vansteensburg concluded.

“Coach Nalen adamantly denied knowledge that any player has practiced in their

underwear. All other interviews conducted were hearsay statements from concerned parents. The players involved appeared in no way to have been endangered physically nor did any one of them wish to come forward to speak with us,” he wrote.

“The video clearly shows a student athlete on the practice field in short shorts that appear to be boxer-briefs; however that player does not appear to be treated any different than the others on the field. It does not appear that any child was singled out.”

Castano said he learned that Saugus High School Principal Michael Hashem advised the football team in a meeting Wednesday that Nalen had been cleared of the allegations. “I don’t understand

“I know the child in question sent an email to the principal saying nothing happened.

That [email sent to principal] happened Friday or Saturday after the game. So the alleged victim claims he wasn’t a victim and that the coach did nothing wrong,” the attorney said.

With the police investigation noting the testimony of three parents who claimed their sons practiced in their underwear, that could be all of the evidence that DeRuosi needs to keep Nalen from returning to the sidelines to coach at Saugus High again. But the superintendent said it’s “a personnel issue,” he cannot talk about at this time.

Nalen continues to teach at Belmonte Middle School.

Citizens ask officials to eliminate dangers for pedestrians and traffic; town manager promises “it’s a priority”

ob Davis is on a personal mission to make the streets safer for fellow Saugus residents who walk and drive them.

Inspired by a July 2 accident that he believes could have killed his daughter-in-law when a drunk driver smashed into her car, Davis showed up at Saugus Town Hall Wednesday night with a petition signed by 163 people in the Essex Street neighborhood calling on the Board of Selectmen to take action that they feel could save lives. Besides the petition, Davis brought sample speed limit signs, photographs of scary accident scenes, and a list of suggestions.

“We hope this will make a statement as far as people wanting some changes,” Davis told the board. “We’re here to offer to be part of the solution to help make Saugus streets safer.”

Davis, one of five residents to address the Board of Selectmen in a citizen’s comment section of the meeting dedicated to traffic, even offered ideas on traffic safety improvement if the town had trouble finding the money to pay for the improvements. “If there is no money available to the town through Chapter 90, I would go out and try to raise money from businesses,” Davis said. He suggested that signs financed through donations by businesses could mention the business that was helping to improve traffic safety “for a safer Saugus.”

Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree later called Davis’s fundraising idea “a great gesture.” But Crabtree stressed that improving traffic safety in town is a town responsibility. “It has to be looked at from a funding standpoint and an enforcement standpoint,” Crabtree said.

Town still welcomes public comment The town manager reiterated his invitation for all concerned citizens to contact his office with ideas to improve traffic safety while also pledging his commitment to make it a top priority of his administration. He vowed his office – working with town officials, selectmen and citizens – will develop a comprehensive plan to address traffic safety concerns.

With an eye to crafting the town budget for the 2020 fiscal year that begins next July 1, Crabtree said he would like to have “a dedicated traffic unit” and “dedicated officers enforcing traffic and parking regulations on a consistent basis.”“We will make the streets for our pedestrians much safer in our com-

munity,” Crabtree said, noting that “it’s something long overdue” – “This is a priority that we’ve taken on that we think we can make a difference … this is not a problem that’s not common to other communities.”

Crabtree demonstrated his commitment yesterday by walking around town with representatives of WalkBoston, a group that is working with the town to consider sidewalk and road designs that affect walking conditions. WalkBoston is funded through the state Executive Office of Public Safety and plans to work with the town in securing state grant money that could help address safety concerns.

Representatives of the town’s police and fire departments and planning department went on a “walk audit”Wednesday, which will identify positive and negative aspects of the area in which they walked, according to Crabtree.

The overall approach to improving traffic safety in town will identify short-range, intermediate range and longrange priorities in all precincts through the town, according to Crabtree.

Selectman Mark Mitchell suggested that Crabtree consider the use of “unmanned cruisers” parked at various locations throughout the town to encourage traffic to slow down.

Mitchell also expressed concerns about the longtime and lingering traffic safety problems along Route 1. “Get state Rep. [Donald] Wong in here to find out what’s going on,” Mitchell said.

“It’s up to him as well, to get involved in this discussion,” he said.

to 1989 when the award originated. Since 1993, a man and a woman have received the recognition which had been presented to male citizens during its first four years of existence.

“Dedicating themselves to Saugus” Each year, past winners meet to recommend new recipients.

Several past award winners sat on a wooden stage set up at the bottom of the steps at Town Hall, where the presentation was made.

In her remarks, Panetta went on to praise this year’s recipients as outstanding role models for anyone interested in becoming involved in local government. “His work ethic was remarkable,” Panetta said of Manoogian. “He’s very passionate about Saugus and the people in our community,” she said.

“Janette has dedicated 27 years on the Board of Selectmen,” Panetta said, noting that Fasano was the first woman elected to the town body [1980]. “I admire your advocacy,” Panetta said.

Fasano and Manoogian each had “a knack” for making the difficult decisions, according to Panetta. “Both of these individuals have dedicated themselves to making Saugus a better place,” she said.

Both of this year’s recipients served a span of more than three decades in local government.

Fasano began her career in Saugus public service in 1977 when she was appointed to the Board of Appeals. A year later, she was appointed to the Finance Committee. In 1979, she was elected to Saugus Town Meeting as a member from Precinct 9.

During a special election to fill a vacant seat on the Board

of Selectmen in 1980, she beat out five other candidates to become the first woman elected to the Board of Selectmen, where she served for 27 consecutive years. In 1987, she topped the ticket in the selectmen’s race and thus became the first woman chair of the Saugus Board of Selectmen.

She served as chair for 18 consecutive years.

Manoogian served 10 twoyear terms as a Town Meeting member of Precinct 10. He also served 11 years on the Finance Committee, six years on the Board of Selectmen, two years as a School Committee member, two years as chair of the Saugus Charter Commission and on many other local government bodies.

“He’s the author of hundreds of bylaws and charter changes,” said Robert J. Long, a former colleague of Manoogian’s on the Board of Selectmen. Long, last year’s “Person of the Year Award” recipient, who introduced Manoogian, called his service “unmatched.”

Ruth L. Berg, last year’s winner, introduced Fasano and called her service record “legendary.” “To this day, Janette continues to serve the Town of Saugus as the Metropolitan Area Planning Council representative and as a member of the Friends of the Saugus Senior Center,” Berg said.

Fasano and Manoogian joined former Selectman Long in an exclusive circle of selectmen who have been honored as “Person of the Year” recipients over the years. The other two members who served with them during the period 1987 to 1991 – Florence Chandler (2003) and Richard Barry (2006) – are past recipients of the award.

Town responds to threat of West Nile virus after positive test for a mosquito collected in Saugus; spraying initiated (Editor’s Note: The following story is based on information issued by Saugus Town Manager Scott Crabtree’s Office.) he Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) recently announced that West Nile virus (WNV) was detected in a mosquito collected in Saugus. This positive test, which was conducted by MDPH, is considered to be of low risk to humans, as the mosquito the virus was detected in is considered a “dirty mosquito” that only bites birds.

This positive test was found during routine testing that is conducted throughout mosquito season. To date, 4,553 mosquito samples statewide have been tested for WNV and 391 samples were positive.

There has been only one positive mosquito in Saugus identified this year.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state, and they are found in urban as well as more rural areas. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.

treated all storm drains and catch basins with larvicide and conducted targeted spraying.

The Town will continue to work with the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control & Wetland Management District to reduce the mosquito population and the risk of WNV transmission. The Town and the Board of Health will continue to work closely with MDPH and other agencies to take all the necessary preventive precautions and to closely monitor any virus activity.

Saugus Director of Public Health David Greenbaum told the Board of Health this week that the mosquito spraying initiated by the town is focusing on where the mosquito was found in the Riverside area.

“They’re going to do a targeted spraying in town on Thursday evening,” Greenbaum said at Monday night’s meeting.

In an interview after the meeting, Greenbaum stressed that there have been no documented cases of humans being infected in Saugus so far this year. “A little bit of personal protection will go a long way … The mosquitos that fly from dusk to dawn are the mosquitos of concern. The ones out during the day don’t carry the

commonsense precautions: virus,” Greenbaum said.

Our Annual Pumpkin Patch begins!

Come on down to help unload the tractor trailers, Saturday, Sept. 29 at 9 a.m. and Saturday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m.1 p.m. at First Congregational Church-UCC Saugus. Adults and school-age kids are needed to help us unload our two tractor trailer loads of beautiful pumpkins and gourds from New Mexico. This is such a great family event! Students can receive credit for community service hours by helping out at the Patch, and local businesses can fulfill their pledges to do community outreach.

After unloading, we will be open seven days a week selling pumpkins until Halloween Day. Many people like to pose their kids for photos (and even their pets) among the bright orange pumpkins. We also like them to send us the pix so we can post on Facebook (no tagging allowed).

Proceeds from the Patch help fund a yearly $500 scholarship for any graduating Saugus senior high school student who is continuing on to further education. Applications with the criteria listed are available from the church office.

Did you know our pumpkins come all the way from the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico? So we are not only helping local Saugus causes, we

are also helping the Navajos run their self-sustaining farms.

Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus!

The Saugus United Parish Food Pantry, in collaboration with the Saugus Faith Community, the Saugus School Superintendent and area businesses and organizations, is running a new initiative called “Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus,” which aims to address food insecurity in the Saugus public school system. There is a public meeting set for next Wednesday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m. at the Belmonte Middle School.

In 2014 Feeding America published the Hunger in America Report. The report drew attention to the 15.8 million children nationwide who live in food insecure households. As a community we recognize there are children and families in Saugus who could use our help. To offset food insecure households, Healthy Students – Healthy Saugus will provide a weekend’s supply of nutritious food for each eligible child when school lunches and breakfasts are unavailable to them on weekends or school holidays during the school year.

Take-home grocery bags will contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, one can of vegetables and one can of fruit.

All food will be nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. If additional food is needed for extended family members, it will be provided. It is our hope these resources will support the health, behavior and achievement of every student who participates.

Parents will apply for the program by filling out a simple consent form.

The program will be run by the school department’s current food service provider, Whitsons Food Service, and the many wonderful volunteers who will be packing the food bags. On Thursdays, Whitsons will deliver food and grocery bags to each volunteer site, where the bags will be packed, then picked up by Whitsons on Fridays and delivered to the schools for students to take home. The program will begin first at the elementary schools and, if the need arises, it will be expanded to the upper grades. The school district will use the utmost discretion in identifying students and working with families to

Baker, Wong supporters come out for campaign fundraiser

ore than 150 people came out to Kowloon Friday night for a campaign fundraiser for State Rep. Donald Wong and Gov. Charlie Baker (R-Swampscott), who are seeking reelection.

“Since we ran for office, we have the lowest drop-out rate, and our

kids are number one in the country,” Baker said at the podium.

“Massachusetts is truly a great state filled with great people.”

He shared a few words about his work with Wong, who is hoping to be reelected for a fifth term. “Our constituents know where we live, what field our kids play on, and where we bring our dry-cleaning,” Bak-

er said. “You have to engage in discussion with them, and Don is one of those people who everyone wants to work with. He has good judgement and knows how to disagree respectfully.”

er and knows everything about a lot of issues.

“He responds when you contact him,” Carlson said. “But if he doesn’t know the answer, he’ll check and get back to you.”

Carlson said he likes Baker’s sense of humor.

“We were at a campaign event in Wakefield, and he whispered that he’s a ‘Donald Wong Republican,’ when I told him that I’m a ‘Charlie Baker Republican.’

His wife, Marilyn, said both candidates look at all sides of the issue, calling them fair. “Charlie’s personable,” Marilyn Carlson said. “He has excellent stamina, and he is always on-the-go.

He covers about 352 cities and towns and cities across that state – that’s a lot of area, but he’s a visible governor. He’s our neighbor, living in Swampscott.”

As for Wong, Marilyn Carlson said he is a hardworking full-time representative who gets results and has kept to his word, leaving Kowloon in his brothers’ hands so he can better serve us.”

Saugus resident Gene Decareau, who has helped to put out signs for Wong, said that Wong is honest, sincere and dedicated. “I can’t find anything bad to say about him,” Decareau said. “He’s always trying to help someone else.

He has helped my friends and neighbors personally. He is one of the few representatives who has 100 percent attendance – that in itself says a lot.”

Like the Carlsons, he shared a personal story about Baker. “My great-grandchildren, Kameron and Kennedy Perera, wrote a letter to thank him for visiting their school,” Decareau said. “And he wrote one back.”

Saugus resident Don Jacobs said Wong helped to pass a recent bill, where residents pay extra on real estate taxes to benefit veterans. “Donald does a lot for the community and especially to support veterans,” Jacobs said.

He declined to comment on Baker’s work.

Saugus resident Rosemary Ferraro said Wong is dedicated to the community and has Saugus’s best interest.

Campaign Manager Corinne Riley said that elections are changing – young liberal challengers are beating incumbents. “Donald has always relied on his supporters over the years, and this is no different,” Riley said Tuesday afternoon. “This turnout shows how people feel about keeping a hardworking representative in office. His ability of working together with everyone is such a benefit to his district as well as the Commonwealth. Thank you all for coming, and I look forward to a successful reelection this November.” Riley told supporters that the election won’t be handed to them – they have to earn it.

Back at the podium, State Rep. Brad Jones (20th Middlesex District) said Wong is one of the nicest people that he’s met, works well with everyone and makes Massachusetts a better place in all of the 350 cities and towns. “He’s done a fantastic job and was raised right by his parents,” Jones said.

Amid coach’s removal, Sachems show fight in loss to Amesbury

ust a week after being informed that their head coach had been suspended indefinitely from his position, the Saugus Sachems managed to put forth a worthy effort in their season opener at Amesbury last Friday night. Unfortunately, effort alone wasn’t enough for the Sachems to come away with a victory, as the host Indians emerged 30-12 winners.

Q: Jake, you went over to the superintendent’s office [Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi,

Nalen led the Sachems to a 4-7 finish in 2017 and appears to have strong support from members of his coaching staff and the players. The team held a protest in front of the school superintendent’s office Mon-

day, and some assistant coaches have reportedly left the program, saying they will only return if Nalen is reinstated.

“We just want our coach back. It’s just been hard for our whole team. We’re very young still. It’s not easy for us to handle,” senior captain Dante McGrane told the press at Monday’s protest. “We’re still trying to figure everything out, trying to figure out what we can do.”

Meanwhile, middle school coach Mike Mabee was the act-

ing head coach against Amesbury last Friday, and the Sachems responded well early on. They pulled ahead 6-0 when quarterback Mason Nickolas tossed a 17-yard scoring strike to Christian Correia. Saugus then held a 12-6 lead in the second quarter after Marvens Jean rambled 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Sachems would not score again while Amesbury would reel off 24 unanswered points, including 16 to close

out the first half for a 22-12 lead at the break. The Sachems had chances to make it closer and had the ball deep inside Amesbury territory on two occasions. But they came up empty, as the Indians produced two late goalline stands.

Saugus travels to Wakefield this Friday evening for a contest against Northeast Metro Tech and plays its home opener at Stackpole Field on Saturday, Sept. 22 against Salem.

Jr.] to express your concerns earlier today?

A: Yes. We went over to talk to Mr. DeRuosi, and he basically said that this is still pretty much under investigation, and it’s been two weeks and we still have no answers for an incident, and all because of a kid in boxers. It’s ridiculous.

Q: One kid in boxers?

A: Yes. It’s ridiculous and was never an issue with the team, because we’re all trying to win football games. For some of us, football is all we got, and they don’t let us do that. Coach Nalen is there for us every single day, but we don’t have him, and that’s a problem.

Q: So, based on what you know, you think the coach is getting a raw deal?

A: Yes. Definitely.

Q: Why do you think this has happened? Why did your coach get suspended?

A: I honestly believe that DeRuosi doesn’t care much about the football team and is just trying to get rid of him; I don’t know much more about it. I just think we should get our coach back.

Q: Dante, tell me a little bit about this, please.

A: It’s been a bad situation for everybody. I mean, it’s hurting people’s families. It’s hurting the football team. It’s hurting our coach. It’s hurting

us as seniors, who have been working hard for four years, and we finally have a team that we thought could make a playoff run, and right now, the way things are, it’s not looking too good because of our coaching staff or the way things are going down, really.

A player came to practice, violating the color code for his shorts. The coach told him to go change, and he came back wearing a long pair of boxers.

That was his decision, not the coach’s. It wasn’t a big deal, and the coach didn’t deserve to be suspended for this. This guy has done it all for us. He cares about this team and would never do anything to hurt us. He treats us like family. I love this guy. He’s a great mentor; he’s a father figure to the kids. It’s horrible what’s going on here and what they’re doing to him.

Q: So, the coaches, they refused to show up last Friday until the coach is reinstated.

A: Yes, that was what was said in the email that was sent out to our parents. I just want to put out from all three of us that we love our

coaches. They work hard day in and day out. They really care for us, and they never put a player or anybody in harm or hazed anybody in any way. The only thing that they bring to our team is motivation. They make us better people on and off the field; they make us better players.

They show us what life is really about – that things just don’t get handed to you, that you have to work for things in life, and that’s what you want out of a coach: to make you a better player and a better man.

Q: So, Dante, have any of the players been interviewed by the cops?

A: No. Not one of us has been interviewed by the cops.

Not one of us has been talked to by the school. They seem to be making their decisions based on how they feel. They haven’t called in one player yet; not one player about anything, and it’s kind of a tough situation. I mean, at the end of the day, we have been through hell and back at this point; we’ve been hit

H

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

Saugus in the national spotlight – for something bad I’ve received several congratulatory emails over the past week from loyal readers who notice that The Saugus Advocate was credited by The Boston Globe and later USA Today for breaking the story on the suspension of Saugus High Football Coach Anthony Nalen last Friday.

Sure, I still get a kick out of busting a story that gets picked up statewide or nationally – as was the case with this story. I know my bosses in Everett love those kinds of stories. At the same time, I’m concerned as a grizzled newsman who authored the original story as to whether it’s a story that warrants national attention, as the story is somewhat incomplete at this point.

As a frequent visitor to town, I feel badly that there’s another media feeding frenzy on a controversial Saugus story that may hang around for a while, overshadowing a number of good things that happen in town. I feel for the football players, parents and – of course the football coaches – and anyone else who’s affected by this story. It’s definitely cast a dark cloud over the Saugus High football season.

But I don’t regret what I did as a newsman. It’s news when a high school coach – or any prominent person on the town payroll – gets suspended. Of course, I’m going to write that story – even if officials at Saugus Public Schools refuse to talk. It would be irresponsible for us to not write the story.

“It’s embarrassing” Meanwhile, it’s an ugly scene on Saugus social media – as all of the experts come out of the woodwork to opine – some attacking Saugus Public Schools Superintendent David DeRuosi, Jr., others vilifying the coach. I’m not a big fan of that kind of social media. But people send me screenshots of some of the emails.

At Wednesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting, Saugus Selectman Mark Mitchell expressed frustration about the black eye that Saugus is getting because of the Nalen suspension. “It’s embarrassing,” Mitchell told colleagues during the board members’ comment period.

Mitchell noted it’s unfortunate that the football team and parents haven’t gotten a very good explanation of what’s going on.

The selectman, who is a big local sports fan, said he knows the matter isn’t in the jurisdiction of the Board of Selectmen. “But it’s falling in our lap,” he said, adding “I think something needs to be done” before the community is further embarrassed.

But Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree stressed “it’s a personnel issue” and “nothing we should be involved in.”

The town manager is absolutely right. But Mitchell does make a good point.

It’s my view as one of the newspaper people chasing this story that Saugus Public Schools could have done a better job in briefing the public and those affected. Sure, the superintendent – as a “mandated reporter” – was legally bound to report the allegations of an alleged hazing incident to the police. And he has to be careful and discreet in what he says so he doesn’t violate confidentiality and prejudice any ongoing investigation. At the same time, he should have put out a quick statement, confirming that Coach Nalen was put on paid leave pending the outcome of a police investigation. A simple, brief statement noting the suspension and as well as his limitations for not disclosing the confidential details.

The public was entitled to know something about the suspension, and this could have minimized some of “the embarrassment” factor that Selectman Mitchell and others refer to.

Meanwhile, the Nalen suspension is polarizing the School Committee. Saugus’s dirty political fingerprints are all over this one. Part of the board backs DeRuosi. Part of the board backs Coach Nalen.

Eventually, it will all come out in the wash. Stay tuned.

Of citizen concern Founders Day, which was celebrated last Saturday, was definitely a high point for Saugus and its residents. Cool, comfortable weather graced the event.

It was great to see a lot of people from all ages milling around Saugus Center, enjoying leisure time. It was a nice family day. It seemed like senior citizens were out there enjoying the event.

It was also a huge opportunity for town nonprofit groups to raise money for good causes.

The signature event of Founders Day, of course, was the awarding the annual “Person of the Year Award” at High Noon on a platform set up in front of Town Hall. This year was extra special, as the recipients were former Selectmen Janette Fasano and Peter Manoogian. They joined former Board of Selectmen Members Bob Long, Dick Barry and Florence Chandler as former selectmen who have been honored for their longtime service to Saugus town government.

As somebody who has been a reporter for about 46 years, I have long believed that these five people constituted one of the best local government boards I have covered in my newspaper journey through Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, Texas, Florida and Maine.

I know there are folks out there making disparaging comments about the two recipients. But from what I observed more than a quarter of a century ago, there was pretty good teamwork for the betterment of Saugus. They accomplished a lot, and town residents appeared to have been well represented.

Helping the homeless School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith asked us to give a plug for this upcoming event to help the homeless and poor people in Saugus and the surrounding communities.

The 11th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run to benefit those in need who reside in the Lynn area is set for Saturday, Sept.

29, rain or shine. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:15 a.m. from St. John’s parking lot at 174 Humphrey St. in Swampscott.

The Lynn District Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – which covers Saugus – is organizing the event. SVdP is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world. Last year, the Lynn District of SVdP raised $14,122 to help people in need throughout the area, regardless of religion, race or national origin, according to a media advisory sent to The Saugus Advocate.

Sunday (Sept. 23) at 1 p.m. at the Saugus Knights of Columbus. Troop 61 Scoutmaster Kevin M. Wildman tells us that the troop is hoping Jim Vernelli, “a real scouting legend” will show up for the event.

“He started back in 1966 and put in 50-plus years – about 30-plus years as scoutmaster,” Wildman told us in a recent interview. That says a lot about his commitment to scouting.

Saugus High Sports Hall of Fame Cassandra and Kelsey Anderson – twin sisters and 2007 Saugus High School graduates who starred in female soccer and indoor and outdoor track – will be among 10 former Sachem athletic greats who will be inducted this fall in the school’s “Sports Hall of Fame.”

It’s just a bad situation all the way around. We’re all in a tough spot; we have all been through a lot lately. It’s not easy. We’re only in high school. We’re not even adults yet.

Restaurant must hire food safety consultant

T

he Board of Health has ordered Casa Vallarta Family Mexican Restaurant to hire a food safety consultant to assist in correcting several ongoing violations identified during inspections at the business at 114 Broadway over the past two years.

At Monday’s meeting, Saugus Director of Public Health David Greenbaum read from a long list of “repeat violations” that date back to the summer of 2016. He said that just when the restaurant seems to be making improvements in correcting the violations, the restaurant regresses.

“There seems to be a system problem,” Board of Health Chair William Heffernan said. “The gross negligence is what I have a problem with. We’re here to protect the public health, and it seems that you just don’t care. … If things continue to go downhill, we’ll have to take further action.

Owner Elena Delgadillo told the Board of Health that she has hired a new manager, in hopes of making the necessary improvements.

“The issues at the restaurant in question are violations that continue to be observed during inspections by health department staff,” Greenbaum told The Saugus Advocate.

“The three main areas that have been consistently observed and repeated are deficiencies in the hand washing stations in the restaurant, lack of sanitizing in the establishment and improper hot and cold temperatures,” Greenbaum said.

“These violations are ultimately corrected; however, the fact that they are consistently observed is concerning. This is the reason the board has taken the action they have,” he said.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
