Lynnfield walloped by powerful nor’easter

DEVELOPMENT | from page 2 Rail-Trail Update In other news, Robert Almy, secretary of the Recreational Path Committee, provided an update on the Wakefield-Lynnfield Rail Trail project. Now having 25 percent of the design completed, he said, the project will be presented to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) at a public hearing this spring.

Should the state accept the project, it would then enter the 75 percent design phase before proceeding to final design.

Although MassDOT would fund the $5.5 million that it would cost to build Lynnfield’s portion of the trail, Almy said the town would need to allocate $300,000 to fund the 75 percent design phase.

Almy also addressed residents’ concerns, such as safety, the use of sidewalks, crime and neighborhood impact.

He said it was found that Lynnfield’s sidewalks are “not conducive” to bike riding and that accidents involving distracted drivers are a growing problem.

Almy said the rail trail could be the resolution as roads and sidewalks would be taken out of the equation. “This rail trail would, in fact, improve transportation safety,” he said.

Almy said that although “crime can happen anywhere,” a rail trail generally repels criminal activity and attracts residents who want to use it for its intended purpose. He also said a rail trail would be a draw for new residents and would increase property values, and even those residents who have opposed the rail trail would eventually change their minds.

Resident Patricia Campbell said the construction of a rail trail could mean losing the playground at Jordan Park. Al-

though the trail itself would be away from roads and sidewalks, Campbell said, residents would be riding their bikes along those roads and sidewalks to get to the rail trail.

Therefore, the danger of being struck by a vehicle would not be reduced.

Resident Jill Jorgenson said she felt uneasy about the town paying $300,000 to fund the 75 percent design phase. “The rail trail people are asking for $300,000; who knows what that might go up to,” she said.

Another resident said town officials should be focused on the parking situation in Lynnfield. “We have a huge problem with the parking,” she said.

Opioid Litigation The board voted unanimously to hire the law firm Scott+Scott of Colchester, Conn., to represent the town in taking legal action against opioid manufacturers. Town Counsel Thomas Mullen said he is “leery of getting involved,” hence the reason for retaining outside counsel.

Mullen said Scott+Scott currently represents Worcester, Haverhill and Springfield on opioid-related matters. He also appreciated how the case would be handled. “They want to stay out of federal court so that they can control the litigation,” said Mullen, adding that the case would remain on the state level.

In addition, he said Scott+Scott is a “risk free” firm and that the town would not lose any money. “They front all the expenses,” said Mullen.

He will also be making the same recommendation to the Wakefield Board of Selectmen.

The Karen Rae Simpson Duggan Scholarship, which is offered for the first time this year, is for a Lynnfield Senior graduating from Lynnfield High School or Essex Technical High School who is interested in fine arts, graphic arts or computer design. Karen was a painter, well-known needlepoint artist and Certified Judge who encouraged others’ artistic pursuits and

he Lynnfield Art Guild (LAG) is proud to announce that its 54th season continues with a demonstration by renowned watercolor artist Marjorie Glick on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. in the allpurpose room at the Lynnfield Senior Center (525 Salem St., Lynnfield).

Marjorie Glick is known for her large-scale and vividly realistic watercolors that are inspired by New England’s places of antiquity and by the beauty found in nature.

For 30 years she has been painting, and she has exhibited at several regional museums and galleries, includ-

ing the DeCordova Museum, the Berkshire Art Museum, the Brockton Art Museum, the Beth Urdang Gallery in Boston and the Forum Gallery in New York. Her work is in over 40 corporate and private collections, including the Federal Reserve Bank, Fidelity Investments, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Tufts-New England Medical Center, all in Boston, and at Friends Hospital in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of grants from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation (Artist’s Resource Trust Grant) and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She has served as Adjunct Faculty

for The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and was a member of the faculty of the DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, Mass., from 19862012. She leads plein air workshops each summer in Maine, Monet’s Garden in Giverny, France, and Tuscany, Italy. Her work has appeared in the following publications: “Splash 11: New Directions: The Best of Watercolor,” edited by Rachel Rubin Wolf (North Light Books, 2010) and “Watercolor Artist Magazine” (feature article, “Once Upon a Time” by Meredith Lewis in October 2010). She holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of

Art and has studied independently with Wolf Kahn and George Nick.

Skating rink once again a possibility for Wakefield

By Christopher Roberson AKEFIELD – The Board of S elec tmen voted unanimously on Feb. 26 to authorize Town Administrator Stephen Maio to send out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for an ice skating rink behind Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School (The Voke).

“I think it came up in the 70s and did not pass Town Meeting by a few votes,” Maio said of the last ice rink proposal.

He said the rink would be shared between the town and The Voke; however, the town would have “preferred ice time” for the high school hockey teams and the Wakefield Youth Skating Association. Maio also said the rink would consist of two sheets of ice and the arena would have a second exit on Farm Street “almost at the Saugus line.”

In addition, Maio said he does not consider the rink to be a substantial source of income. “To me, this is not a money maker; it’s about keeping our kids on campus,” he said.

Selectman Anthony Longo said having a rink close by would defray the cost of transportation for the high school’s hockey programs.

“It won’t be a moneymaker, but it definitely will be a money saver,” he said.

Two new Wakefield restaurants In other news, the board voted unanimously to grant an all-alcohol, a common victualler and an entertainment license to Tequila’s Grill & Cantina at 979 Main St. The restaurant will be in the space formerly occupied by Porto-Bello Restaurant in Greenwood Plaza. Attorney Brian McGrail, counsel for the applicants, said his clients currently operate two other restaurants in Chelmsford and Groton.

In response, Selectman Edward Dombroski mentioned two recent hearings in which the Dockside Restaurant and Harrington’s Pub were accused of overserving of alcohol.

McGrail assured the board that one of the two owners will always be on-site. “ They ’re really a restaurant; they’re not going to be open until one in the morning,” he said.

The selectmen also granted the same approval for Tonno Wakefield, which will operate at 175 North Ave., a mixed-use property with 60 condominiums.

McGrail, counsel for applicants Matthew Maggiore and Anthony Caturano, said Tonno will occupy an area of

5,000 square feet to accommodate up to 215 patrons.

There will also be 104 outdoor seats included in the maximum seating figure.

McGrail said that in addition to an 87-month lease, there are plans for a $650,000 build out to house Tonno.

Supporters said that in the Bay State in 2017 at least six municipal workers died from workplace injuries and noted that an average of 28 municipal workers per week suffer injuries serious enough to be out of work for five days or more. They argued this protection would cover some 450,000 state and local public workers who perform jobs that are sometimes just as dangerous as private sector ones. “Worker safety must be a top priority,� said Sen. Marc Pacheco (D-Fall River), the bill’s sponsor. “Providing safe and healthy work conditions for all of Massachusetts workers, across all sectors, should be the least we do. Extending these protections to public employees helps them return home to their families, and we must make sure they continue to do so.�

2. Conquering heart break hill and the Boston marathon, she attributed to strategic water stops.

3. Always thoughtful.

4. Love of reading inspired a lifelong passion volunteering for literacy programs wherever she lived.

5. A lust for travel brought her too many continents as well as states, kayaking Alaska and skiing Yellowstone’s geyser basins were her favorites.

6. Short trips always became excursions, especially while searching for an open Thai restaurant.

7. Passcodes were a challenge, yet she could remember minute details about one of her kids’ friends.

8. As a fierce competitor and ranked player, tennis was definitely singles, not doubles.

9. Her outgoing personality made agnostic friendships everywhere.

10. She was a warrior-she never gave up!

Could You Have Diabetes?

Dear Savvy Senior, My brother and his wife, who are ages 60 and 56, were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes, and neither one had a clue. Could I have it too?

Concerned Sibling Dear Concerned, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nearly 115 million Americans have diabetes or prediabetes today, but most of them don’t even know they have it. Here’s how to know if you’re at risk.

The problem with diabetes is that most people don’t start thinking about it until they’re diagnosed, and that’s too late.

Diabetes is a disease that develops over decades. Most people have prediabetes for a long time before the disease becomes full-blown type 2 diabetes, and even then it progresses gradually. That leaves a big window in which to stop, slow or reverse the disease.

Diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin to remove sugar from the bloodstream. Excess blood sugar damages blood vessels and affects circulation, putting you at risk for a host of ailments, from heart attack and stroke to blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage.

Are You At Risk?

If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, your odds of developing diabetes increases.

Are you over age 45?

Are you overweight?

Do you have high blood pressure – 140/90 or higher?

Do you have a parent or sibling with diabetes?

Are you sedentary?

Are you African American, Hispanic/Latino American, Native American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Alaska native?

Did you develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy?

Get Tested If you find that you’re at risk for diabetes, there are three different tests your doctor can give you to diagnosis it. The most common is the “fasting plasma glucose test,” which requires an eight-hour fast before you take it. There’s also the “oral glucose tolerance test” to see how your body processes sugar, and the “hemoglobin A1C test” that measures your average blood sugar over the past three months. It can be taken anytime regardless of when you ate.

Most private health insurance plans and Medicare cover diabetes tests, however, if you’re reluctant to visit your doctor to get tested, an alternative is to go to the drug store, buy a blood glucose meter and test yourself at home.
