he Revere City Council wants sound barriers installed on the Route 1 corridor. At the February 5 City Council meeting, Ward Councillors Joanne McKenna, Charles Patch and Patrick Keefe requested that the Mayor contact MassDOT to request the installation of sound barriers along Route 1 between Route 16 and Copeland Circle. “There is always a major traffic jam on Route 1,” McKenna said. “We have nothing to abut with Route 1 and are inundated with noise pollution, and it’s not right.” Patch said he tried to get sound barriers in 2011 with late Councillor Robert Haas but got no response from MassDOT. “We should get more respect from the state and federal government,” he said. Keefe said usually more affluent communities are granted sound barriers. “We are always left out in the cold,” he said.

Ward 2 Councillor Ira Novoselsky agreed, saying even Saugus High School’s new ballfield got a sound barrier and that Revere deserves one as well, calling it a quality of life issue. Councillor-at-Large George Rotondo said they should seek out state officials that represent Revere and ask them to go to bat on this issue. The motion was sent to the Mayor’s desk. Councillors approve two roles for Leone In other news, the council ruled on a conflict of interest issue for John Leone, who works for the Revere Parks and Recreation Department and is now also the coach for the Revere High School junior varsity basketball team. Leone was not able to appear before the council because he had a game but spoke to a few of the councillors before the meeting. He has been the JV coach since last season.

Chelsea, Everett and Malden aided Revere firefighters to extinguish the fire for approximately four hours. According to the Fire Department, the house appears to be a complete loss but still needs to be inspected by the building inspector. The cause

of the fire is under investigation. The fire also caused damage to the exterior of a house next door. Later that day, Councillor-atLarge Dan Rizzo requested in a motion to City Clerk Ashley Melnick for Mayor Brian Arrigo and Fire Chief Christopher Bright to appear before the City Council to discuss staffing of both personnel and equipment at the Revere Fire

Department at the February 5 City Council meeting. According to Rizzo, a pump was out of service at the Central Fire Station. Rizzo was absent from Monday’s meeting. “I think there should be a system in place when emergency equipment is out of service,” said Councillor-at-Large Anthony Zambuto. “I’m baffled by this. We need some accountability here. It’s frighten-

ing to hear this.” Ward 2 Councillor Ira Novoselsky said there is a backup of system in place, but he didn’t know what happened during that particular fire. “I have faith in Chief Bright,” he said. “He wouldn’t leave the city shorthanded.” Zambuto said he doesn’t doubt Bright but wants to know what the plan is when a piece of equipment is out of service. “They did a great job extinguishing that fire,” he said. “They saved people’s lives.” Ward 4 Councillor Patrick Keefe mentioned a GoFundMe page created for a family displaced by the fire. So far, more than $9,000 has been donated. One of the displaced families has a son with diabetes, according to the GoFundMe page.
