augus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr. said he looks forward to “going to jail” tomorrow morning as long as a lot of gawking spectators are willing to pay his bail.

DeRuosi is one of several school and town officials who won’t mind a few minutes of public humiliation – all in fun and all to help a good cause: the Saugus High School Band.

DeRuosi said he plans to surrender and serve his time in the Saugus BAND-it’s Jail when the sheriff’s deputies come looking for him – the same as he did last year. It’s part of a popular fundraising event sponsored by the Saugus Band Parents Association, which has become a fixture of the annual Founders Day celebration, now in its 38th year.

“This is an amazing community event that every Saugonian should attend,” said Crystal Cakounes, programs coordinator for the Saugus Youth & Recreation Department.

“It is a great way to end the

summer, and to get out and see some familiar faces,” Cakounes said.

“We have been working hard on this event since April. It takes months of planning, and we put a lot of time and effort into ‘the behind the scenes’ work.

When the day finally arrives, we are thankfully helped by the Youth Commission, DPW, Police, Fire and some other volunteers. I truly hope everyone is able to make it out on Sept.

Gino has been coming to Founders Day for several years. His mother, Brenda Figliola, is a former Saugus resident and sees this as a way for her to “give back to the com-

Assistant chief takes command of police force as “interim chief”

C

alling it “a smooth transition,” Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree announced this week his appointment of Assistant Chief Ronald Giorgetti to replace retired Police Chief Domenic DiMella on an interim basis until he decides how he wants to fill the vacancy.

“I got on the department with him and got to work with him for a long time. And I have confidence with him being in that position,” Crabtree told The Saugus Advocate.

“He’s been in that position since 2012. He’s been there quite a few years. And he’s dealt with a lot of administrative stuff. With this appointment, I felt this would be a smooth transition,” the town manager said.

DiMella, 58, retired last week after 29 years on the police force – including the last decade as chief of the department. DiMella said he wants to spend more time with his grandchildren and wife, who has a real estate business. The couple live in Lynnfield.

Meanwhile, Crabtree said he hasn’t determined how he plans to fill the chief’s position. He said he has asked Town Counsel John Vasapolli to review changes in the state policies involving police chief appointments. “Right now, we’re looking at different options,” Crabtree said.

“Once we look at all of the options, I’ll determine which way we should go. There have been a lot of changes in the process.

It used to be you could call for a test and pass an exam. The new process is pretty complex with more flexibility,” he said.

Police Department budgets, according to Crabtree. “He has a lot of experience with the internal operations. And I have a lot of confidence in him to keep the ship sailing while we go through the process,” the town manager said.

“He’ll do a very good job,” he said.

Crabtree added that he will probably recommend a salary increase for Giorgetti to compensate him for the additional duties he will take on as interim police chief. “I’ll be meeting with him this week to discuss the salary increase,” Crabtree said.

Giorgetti, 52, was born and raised in Saugus. He is a 1982

graduate of Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School in Wakefield. He earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Curry College.

He is a 24-year veteran of the Saugus Police Department. He rose to the rank of sergeant in 2004 after serving for several years as a detective with the department’s drug unit. Giorgetti received a promotion to lieutenant in 2008 and eventually became lieutenant detective in charge of criminal investigations.

“He’s got a lot of great experience and the department is in very good hands,” Crabtree said.

Assistant DPW chief resigns T

he town’s Assistant Public Works Director Yaser Samerraei was the latest among top administrators to resign from Saugus town government.

Samerraei, who began work last December, decided to resign after less than a year on

the job.

He had a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree said he didn’t know why Samerraei left after only a short stint working with the town.

Founders Day began in 1980, modeled after a country market that was part of the town’s 350th bicentennial celebration, according to Donna Gould, who has been recognized as the organizer or founder of Founders Day. The marquis event, which happens at noon, is the Persons of the Year Awards ceremony.

A man and woman – selected by past recipients of the award – will be honored for their volunteer public and community service and personal contributions for the betterment of the community. They will join 54 departed and living Saugonians who have been honored at Founders Day, going back to 1989.

A summary of the award notes that each presentation is made “In recognition of their dedication to the Town of Saugus. This award truly exemplifies the outstanding spirit of our Founding Fathers.”

Last year Founders Day honored Ruth L. Berg, for more than 50 years of involvement with numerous community organizations, and Robert J. Long, for his years of public service, including 34 years as a Town Meeting member. Berg and Long will introduce this year’s recipients.

n August 31 at about 10:30 a.m., Trooper Tah Yem was on patrol on Route 1 in Revere when he observed a Ford F150 pickup truck with an unsecured load of scrap metal items, including a hot water tank that was only secured by one bungee cord. Additionally, the tailgate of the truck was down. The truck was traveling in both the right travel lane and the breakdown lane at a slow speed.

Trooper Yem pulled the truck over and explained the reason for the stop to the operator, Joshua Thomson, 32, of Saugus. Thomson began arguing with the trooper, stating that his load was properly secured. The trooper issued him a citation

for having an unsecured load and gave him a warning for the marked lanes violation. Trooper Yem further advised the operator to take the next exit in order to properly secure his load, as his vehicle and driving were a hazard to other motorists.

As Trooper Yem walked back to his cruiser, Thomson, who was now irate, exited his truck and began recording the trooper with his cellphone while walking in the right travel lane, creating a traffic hazard. Trooper Yem ordered him to get back in his vehicle numerous times.

Eventually, Thomson got back in his truck, but not before leveling insults at the trooper. Thomson then began traveling southbound at about 25 mph in a 55 mph zone, all the while holding his cellphone out the window to record Trooper Yem, who was traveling behind him. Thomson was

unable to stay in his travel lane and was additionally creating a traffic backup.

The pickup truck exited Route 1 onto Route 16, at which time Trooper Yem pulled the truck over again and issued Thomson another citation for unlawful use of a cellphone, marked lanes violation and breakdown lane violation. irate and yelling insults and, this time, physical threats at the trooper. Trooper Yem repeatedly ordered Thomson to get back in his vehicle and leave, and eventually, Thomson complied.

Thomson proceeded to drive down Adams Street and took a left turn onto Garfield Avenue, where left turns are prohibited by clearly posted signs. Troop8/22/2018 er Yem12:46:34 thenPMattempted to stop the truck again, but Thomson

refused to stop.

Thomson eventually pulled into a parking lot, where he was placed under arrest for failure to stop for a police officer and being a disorderly person. He was subsequently booked at the State Police Barracks in Revere, where he continued to level threats against Trooper Yem. He was taken to Chelsea District Court for arraignment.

Man charged in indecent assault P olice Chief Chief Ronald Giorgetti reports that the Saugus Police Department arrested a man for indecently assaulting a woman last Saturday evening.

Timothy L. Gillespie, 61, of Saugus, was charged with one count of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older.

Gillespie was arrested af-

ter police were dispatched to the area of Jasper and Central streets at about 6 p.m. Saturday. He was scheduled to be arraigned in Lynn District Court on Tuesday, but failed to show.

Giorgetti said state law prohibits Saugus Police from releasing any further details about the incident or investigation.

Q: I believe at a recent selectmen’s meeting – the most recent one – the chair and other members of the Board of Selectmen extended an invitation to people who want to talk about the problem as they see it. They invited members of the public to share some input on

the situation. So, what would you like to tell them?

A: I think if they go out of town and come into town, and began to observe things – today I wound up going into Melrose, and from Melrose I went into Arlington to pick up something and came back through Winchester and Stoneham and Melrose, and they all have updated signage. One of the signs in Winchester going into

Stoneham says “densely populated” throughout the town and says 25 miles per hour.

And they gave you notice on that sign. And it’s relaxing driving through there. As soon as you hit Saugus, it’s the darn Wild, Wild West! So, I’m coming down on my way back at noontime and there’s a kid on a motorcycle that I see behind me. I stop at the light at Vine Street, and he came around me with

He came right on that double red line on Vine Street to Main Street and just took off because he wasn’t going to stay in line. And I was doing the speed limit.

I believe this is a lot about attitude. And I want to see that there’s got to be some correction in attitude – and the public attitude. You just can’t think that you are the only one that needs to park or get into the bank and use the ATM. Friday night I went down to mail a letter in front of the bank, and I see in the “No Parking” spot a beautiful, black Audi. Handsome car. And it’s parked three feet away from the curb right in front of Jasper Street. And out comes this young woman dressed professionally, getting in this car. And I said to her, “This your car? It’s really nice. But look where you parked.” She looked at me and she asked, “Are you recording this?” And I said, “No, but do you see where you are? You’ve got a gorgeous car and you are blocking all of the traffic.”There is somebody trying to come off of Jasper and go right and go around her and head into the center. It’s a royal mess. So, she blows me off and says to me, “I use the ATM. They don’t say anything to me. Hey, I’m not doing anything.”

And I told her, “This isn’t the

bank. This is the town. It’s not safe to park here. And you’re the first one who is going to get hit.” She dismissed me. And then, before she got in the car, one of her friends go out and she was going to park there, too. But that’s the entitled attitude – that people don’t want to walk … not 10 feet. And the bank has got parking in the back. And who uses it? But they’re not going to walk 10 feet. And I see that all of the time.

Q: So, how many years have you been walking in Saugus?

A: When I was in High School, living in Oaklandvale, mother nicknamed me “Miss Adams Avenue, because Adams Avenue is down here, and I would be walking it all of the time, because a lot of my friends were walking it.

Q: So, you are a Saugus High graduate?

A: Yes, Class of 1962.

Q: And you have been walking a long time?

A: Yes. And I gave up smoking in 1994, and really, I had a stressful job and really started to walk.

Q: So, at what point did you notice the hassles with the traffic and the lack of safety for pedestrians?

A: I think it has really gotten bad in the last two to three

ASKS | from page 10 years. Last year it was not only the traffic and crossing the street, it was all the needles [hypodermic needles] and whatever else. And I’d be calling in to the nonemergency line. One Saturday morning, there were five needles at the end of my street. And you can tell the history of the town and what they are doing, but what’s in the street. And you can tell what they’re drinking. In my time, it was beer. Now, it’s that cinnamon hot alcohol.

Q: So, what are your recommendations to the town manager [Scott Crabtree]?

A: I think he needs to get together with people from different parts of this town, especially Saugus Center and Cliftondale, and start coming up with something that is going to impact the traffic. Because it’s not just signs: It’s attitude; it’s planning. Nobody has ever accepted the true problems of living so close to Route 1.

Q: Now, did he [the town manager] return your call?

A: No. I didn’t expect him to.

I just gave him the message.

Q: How long ago did you make the call?

A: It was a week ago yesterday [Monday]. I called him, Rep. Wong, Peter [Rossetti] and I

talked to the bank manager.

Because I also said I was going to talk with whoever I do business with.

Q: So, who returned your calls?

A: Peter. But it’s not a game.

It’s serious; it’s serious enough to come out and look at it. The town manager was a cop. If anybody has walked the walk, he has. So, my sense is, they have no clue. When you see the firetrucks and the ambulances speeding by, they [the cars] don’t even get out of the way for them.

Q: You have walked all over town – so what are the worst intersections for pedestrians?

A: I think for accessibility … and Al DiNardo [Town Meeting member who lives on Essex Street] is one of the most committed people I know in town.

He was a neighbor of mine.

His dad and mother lived right around the corner. And he has put so much time into making the sidewalks safer. Nobody can keep up with the sidewalks, because half of the population is parking on them.

Q: So, what do you hope happens now, in response to your concerns and the concerns raised by other citizens about walking safety in town?

A: I hope it gets very specific. And I hope we can come to-

gether on things that just aren’t structural … on signs and attitudes. I think the different parts of this community that come together – and that’s the business part of the community and the police and the public servants and the people on the universe that we share – and hopefully, so we can stop somebody from getting seriously injured or killed, because it’s really bad.

Q: So, that’s an observation from somebody who has been out there six days a week, walking around town? And you normally do a loop all the way from

Saugus Center up to Cliftondale and down Main Street.

A: And sometimes I go down Winter Street, too. There was somebody killed there in a car going too fast. And there’s another bend and another big sign that came down and never went back up. There are all of these long roads and they come right through Saugus Center, and they connect us with the outside world – and I don’t know how many of these people who are constantly going east and west, never mind north and south. Route 1 is screwed up at 5:30 in the morn-

ing. This morning, it was super early. I think at 6 o’clock they were saying it’s all bad.

I hope it gets people to seriously say things need to get better.

Q: So, for you, what’s the most glaring issue as you try to walk on the sidewalks?

A: I think you just can’t trust a crosswalk any more – at all – and there are multiple, multiple reasons, and that’s attitudinal.

And it’s not the town painting them red.

Q: And it boils down to some

Of course, Board of Selectmen Chair Debra Panetta and the rest of her colleagues on the board will again be a big draw. And so will Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi. They will dress up as prisoners and hang around in a makeshift jail – soliciting bail money to help them raise money. It’s all in fun to help raise money for the Saugus High School Band.

There will be all sorts of food to sample and games for kids.

The politicians will be out campaigning. And the signature event – the announcement of this year’s man and woman “Person of the Year” – will take place at Town Hall at High Noon.

If you have no plans for tomorrow, here’s a good place to be. I’m certainly looking forward to it. This will be my third year milling around on Founders Day. I will enjoy shooting photos for next week’s newspaper and hanging out around Town Hall.

Of citizen concern Does anybody really care that a meeting notice posted on the bulletin board at Town Hall for next week is loaded with flaws that would lead to Open Meeting Law violations if somebody bothered to complain? Probably not, because we mentioned this in last week’s paper, and there was no effort to correct the notice.

“The Rhode Island Sound is a smaller group than the full Navy Band Northeast. They will be playing popular music with a patriotic theme … These highly talented sailors will be performing popular and current music,” Rossetti said.

Parking is available in the rear of the Target/Big Lots parking area, next to the park.

“It is hoped there will be a good turnout for the concert since one of the criteria for the band to return is a large audience.

Rhode Island Sound is the most contemporary sounding group from Navy Band Northeast. This ensemble entertains audiences with music ranging from rhythm and blues to classic rock – performing current popular music at high schools throughout New England.

A: Well, I think there’s enforcement and there’s saying to somebody, “Why are you doing this?”

“Oh, because I can and because it’s convenient.” No. No. No. No. No. That’s not allowed.

And when they figure out they’ve been stopped this time, and it’s not going to change.

It used to be that the word was out that you couldn’t go through Saugus if you had an expired inspection sticker, because they would pull you over and you would park your car and get it towed until you had an inspection sticker. It wasn’t them saying, “Good luck to you.

You have a day to get it.”

And I think that there’s that courtesy that’s in other places, and we’re surrounded by it.

And like I said, you come into this town and you can feel it, you can see it ... who’s driving too close, who’s cutting you off, who can’t get there too fast – that has to change. That has to be changed. Nobody wants to be treated like that.

Q: Anything else that you would like to share?

A: No. We are a nice town. We were a nice town, and we need to get back to where we don’t feel it’s unsafe.

The nicest part of anybody’s day is going for a walk. And to lose that ability because you’re afraid … that’s not a good situation to be in.

I think the people in all parts

of town need to walk the streets to see what we need to do. This should be a Town Meeting thing. People in all of the precincts need to see what the problem spots are in their neighborhood, even if they just start out by walking around in their own neighborhood.

I’m just a retiree who enjoys walking the streets, and I want to keep my neighbors and family safe.

ACEC: Rumney Marsh will have gallery hours from 5:30-7:30 each evening. The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place on Saturday Sept. 22, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. We encourage all nature lovers to enter. You do not need to be an artist.

Specifications for submissions: Rumney Marsh must be the focus of the art. Each artist must be at least 18 years of age and may show only one piece of art. Any three-dimensional works must be self-supporting and no larger than 1’ x 1’ x 1’. Works on stretched canvas will be accepted with eye hooks and wire and need not be framed but must be no larger than 30” x 30”. All other works must be framed and ready to hang (with eye hooks and wire) and no larger than 30” x 30” framed.

Art drop-off will be on Friday, Sept. 21 from 5:30-7:30. Pickup will be on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. At the time of drop-off, each participating artist must fill out an information form (with artist name, price, title of the piece, medium and contact information). In addition artists must sign a release form acknowledging that while every effort will be made to protect artworks there will be no insurance coverage in event of damage or theft and that neither SAVE nor MEG will be held liable for any damages or theft. Saugus SAVE board members and their family members may exhibit but will be ineligible for any prizes. Finally, any sales must be handled by individual artists after the close of the exhibit.

“Preschoolers in the Park” Ready for some summertime fun at the Saugus Iron Works? If you are between the ages of two and six, your parents ought to be checking out the Preschoolers in the Park programs that take place on most Mondays, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., alternating between the Saugus Iron Works and Salem Maritime.

The program gives the children and their adult caregivers the opportunity to learn together about the National Park Service as well historical and environmental topics through a fun, age appropriate, hands-on approach. Town announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off site The Town of Saugus announces that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works (515 Main St.). There is no preregistration or fee required to enter the site; however, proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers. Additional acceptable items include TVs and computers (up to three per year per address); car tires up to 22 “ (for a fee of $3), books and textiles, such as clothing, bedding, pocketbooks, belts and shoes.

Plastic bags and rigid plastics are not permitted due to the international recycling market. Residents are kindly asked to empty recyclables out of any plastic bags and remove the bags from the site.

In the 38-member Senate, 20 senators (52.6 percent) have 100 percent roll call attendance records.

The three senators who missed the most roll calls are: Sen. Kathleen O’Connor Ives (D-Newburyport) who missed 74 roll calls (71.6 percent attendance record).

Sen. Mike Barrett (D-Lexington) who missed 42 roll calls, (83.9 percent attendance record).

Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz (DBoston) who missed 23 roll calls, (91.1 percent attendance record).

O’Connor Ives: “I had to leave the Senate early on July 30th and was unable to attend formal session on July 31st on account of a family emergency and because the Senate took up overriding the governor’s budget vetoes on those two days, I was not available for the 68 roll calls that took place over that day and a half. The vast majority of those votes were only procedural in nature because I voted on the record for every single one of those budget line items and amendments during the Senate budget debate.

Outside of being unable to attend formal session for part of July 30th and July 31st, I missed only 7 roll call votes in 2018.”

Health Insurance Tips for Traveling Abroad Dear Savvy Senior, How does health insurance and Medicare cover health care outside the U.S.? My husband and I have a trip abroad planned this fall and would like to find out if we should buy extra insurance. What can you tell us?

Almost Retired Dear Almost, Great question! No one likes to think about health problems while on vacation, but medical emergencies happen, and your regular insurance may not cover your care when you’re traveling abroad. To avoid any expensive surprises, here are some tips to help make sure you’re covered.

Know What’s Covered Your first step is to contact your health insurer to find out exactly what your plan covers when you’re traveling abroad.

If you have health coverage through an employer, the Health Insurance Marketplace or a private insurance company, the level of coverage can vary widely depending on your policy.

If your plan does provide coverage abroad ask about the specifics, such as whether the plan includes coverage for emergency evacuations to the U.S. and pre-existing medical conditions. You should also find out what your out-of-pocket costs will be if you need medical care while you’re away.

If, however, you or your husband has original Medicare, it does not provide coverage outside the U.S. except in certain circumstances – on a cruise ship within six hours of a U.S., for instance. Some coverage is built in if you have one of the Medigap supplemental plans (C, D, F, G, M, N) that pay 80 percent of bills for emergency care as long as it’s during the first 60 days of the trip abroad. There’s also a $250 annual deductible plus a lifetime limit of $50,000 for foreign travel emergency care.

If you happen to have a Medicare Advantage plan, your coverage outside the U.S. will depend on the plan. Some plans offer emergency care coverage while others don’t.

You’ll need to check your plan for details.

Buy Extra Protection If your policy doesn’t provide health coverage outside the U.S., or if the coverage is limited with high out-of-pocket costs, you can purchase a travel medical insurance policy to cover you, or supplement what your insurer won’t cover.

To shop and compare plans, visit sites like InsureMyTrip.com or SquareMouth.com. To give you a general idea of what travel medical insurance cost. A couple in their sixties planning a two-week trip to Europe, for example, could get a $50,000 medical coverage limit and $100,000 for a medical evacuation for around $100 or higher.

You also need to know that most travel medical plans do not cover costs related to a pre-existing health conditions.

So if you or your husband has a pre-existing condition that might require medical care, choose a comprehensive travel policy, which typically covers medical care, medical evacuation, trip cancellation, trip interruption and baggage loss, and then tack on a pre-existing-condition waiver.

Finding Care If you get sick or injured during your trip, call your travel insurer who can recommend local care options. For extra help, consider joining the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers (IAMAT.org), which provides its members access to a worldwide network of physicians who speak English and have agreed to affordable prearranged fees. Membership is free. Also visit Step.State.gov to enroll your trip with nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. They too can offer health care referrals.

Reimbursement If you do have travel medical insurance, and you receive medical care while traveling abroad, you will probably be required to file a claim and show medical records outlining the care you received and receipts. So make sure you get copies of these so you can get reimbursed when you get home.

t 89, of Saugus and Lynn, passed away peacefully on August 29 with her family by her side. Ethel was born in Malden on June 2, 1929 to

the late Mary and Hugh Bambury. In her younger years, Ethel worked for Saugus Bank and Trust where she met her husband Jim Ludwig, Sr. of Saugus. Ethel worked at Transitron Corp while she was married to Jim. After Jim’s passing who passed at a very young age, she worked as a school aide for the City of Lynn for over 30 years to support her family. Ethel enjoyed traveling, especially taking her family on camping trips. Family gatherings were always very important to her and were part of her rituals down through the years. Ethel was always going out of her way to provide

at least a joke or two. Her wit and sense of humor always shined through even up until the day of her passing. Ethel leaves behind her caring and loving daughter Janice Leahy and her husband Bill of Saugus.

Her three sons, Jim Ludwig and his wife Carol Caefer of Naples, FL, Scott Ludwig and his wife JoAnne of Middleton and Peter Ludwig and his wife Debbie of Lynn. She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Ethel is also survived by her loving sisters

I could care less what lobbying organization you represent in order for my team to achieve votes for your cause in order to play “your game.”

What I do care about is what the citizens of 9th District Essex County feel impacts their families, educational system, police, fire, all civil servants and job security of which includes income potential and retirement. The coaches called the treatment of Nalen an injustice to the coach and the football program. The coaches said they would stand by their coach.

Nalen – who came to Saugus with a resume that featured eight years of high school coaching experience at seven different schools, including five years as a head coach – said his first year’s plans are to build a foundation for a winning scholastic football program that will serve the town’s youths for many years to come.

Then-Saugus High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director Michael J. Nelson expressed

confidence in Nalen’s ability and background at the time of his hiring in March of 2017.

“Coach Nalen brings great experience, as he was the head football coach at such schools as Randolph High School, Matignon High School, Bishop Connolly High School and Blackstone-Millville Regional High School,” Nelson said.

Besides having great athletic skills in high school and college, Nalen had developed the skill set of a coach – just like his Uncle Tom Nalen, who played 14 seasons for the Denver Broncos and became an offensive line coach for a high school team.

Michael Coller sports legend during his days at Pope John XXIII High School in Everett, where he was a three-sport standout. He was the star quarterback of the 2005 Pope John football team, winning MVP honors of the Catholic Central Conference while leading his team to a 9-2 record.

He received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Springfield College (2010), where he played on the football team for three years.

Nalen credited his time as a paraprofessional in the classrooms of the Belmonte Middle School several years ago with developing a connection with some future football players at Saugus High.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
