By Barbara Taormina uring this week’s inaugural ceremony, outgoing City Council President Peg Crowe passed the gavel to Debbie DeMaria who will serve as council president for 2018. Crowe said she was honored to represent Ward 1 for the past six years and to lead the council over the last year which she described as a time of transition.

“It has been a learning experience and a leadership opportunity that I will truly treasure, she said adding that a lot had been accomplished during 2017. “They are our accomplishments as a city council, an administration and as a community, she said. DeMaria began her brief speech with a happy New Year shout out to the entire city. She then broadly out-

~ 2018 Inaugural Exercises ~

City celebrates new council, school committee By Barbara Taormina alden began the New Year with an inaugural ceremony that had pomp, color and even a little news. Newly elected and reelected members of the City Council and School Committee were sworn in, members of the city’s religious community offered inspiring invocations and student performances provided some excitement and style. And during the ceremony, At Large Councillor Debbie DeMaria was elected to serve as the council president for 2018 while members of the School Committee chose Leonard Iovino to serve another term as vice chairman of that board. Mayor Gary Christenson set the tone for the New Year with words that encouraged the elected officials to be mindful of their place in the city’s history. “We all share one common objective, to move our city forward, said Christenson. “Now, more than ever, we must be creative, we must be resourceful and most importantly, we must work together to provide the leadership that our community deserves. Christenson highlighted

Malden’s role in history and new responsibilities the city councilors and school committee members now face. “From taking a chance to settle here in 1640, to leading the way in 1776 to become part of a free country, and now, in 2018, being a welcoming home for people from all over the world Malden has always led the way and today, it’s your turn to do the same. I am confident that we can build a future that is worthy of our past, Mayor G ar y Christenson delivers his address at the he said. city’s Inauguration Ceremony MALDEN CITY | SEE PAGE 3 Tuesday, January 2.

celebrate the New Year alcohol-free. Massachusetts State Representative Paul Brodeur kicked off the evening by speaking of his support for MOA and its work to open the Bridge Recovery Cen-

ter in Malden. Malden Police Chief Kevin Molis was also on hand to welcome guests. Ward 5 Councillor Barbara Murphy donated all of the beverages for the water/ juice bar, which she manned along with City Council Presi-

dent Peg Crowe. Food for the event was generously donated by Floramo’s Restaurant, Dockside Restaurants, Bobby C’s and La Qchara. Pizza was donated by the DiSario family. This free night of fun would not have been possi-

ble without the many volunteers who checked tickets, set up tables, decorated, served food and did much more. MOA established this event, which they hope to continue annually, to support those in any stage of recovery and to help those new to recovery see that there is plenty of fun to be had when you Celebrate Sober. There is no better motivation than that,” said Iovino.

made our basket delivery possible. The Friday before Christmas, a group of Malden Kiwanians and helpers from Malden Catholic High School and Mystic Valley Key Club organized the large number of toys donated. Later that evening more elves arrived in the snow, and each person was given a family to “shop for and a plastic tote to fill. Excitement was high as plastic totes were filled with toys, books, arts and crafts items and warm clothing. As the totes became full, plastic bags and cardboard boxes were used to contain the many wonderful gifts the “shoppers were able to collect for their families. The filled totes, bags and boxes were lined up ready for delivery in the morning. Saturday morning the elves returned to start delivering the baskets of gifts to the families. The ice storm of the night before did not stop the scheduled deliveries. There were very special elves that looked a lot like Malden Firemen and even had a fire truck! Was that Mayor Gary Christenson delivering a basket?

A festive Kiwanian, Bob Green, pushes his baskets of gifts through the snow to his sleigh.

Kiwanian and State Rep. Steve Ultrino is a serious “shopper – his tote was so full he needed a bag to contain the gifts he chose for his family.

On behalf of the children of Malden, Malden Kiwanis wishes to thank all the people who helped us in many ways during the gift drive and delivery. Special thanks

to the Malden Chamber of Commerce and its Executive Director, Jenna Coccimiglio, for partnering with us in helping Santa with his deliveries to the children of Malden.

THE GAVEL | FROM PAGE 1 lined some goals for the upcoming year. “I consider my fellow councilors part of a dream team, she said. “Their experience, education, knowledge and broad range of political views will help Malden become everything the city can be. DeMaria listed a number of plans, projects and issues for 2018, beginning with the promise to reintroduce a resolution to allow for public commentary at City Council meetings. She also hopes to reboot the Citizens Engagement Standing Committee to bolster communication and community involvement in local government. “We can never discount the voice of the stakeholders, she said. She also said the council will continue to work on “inherited issues such as affordable housing, lead pipe replacement, blue trash bags and parking and traffic. “While we are not the actual owners of the hospital site land, a new hospital site review committee has been formed to work with the administration to identify the best possible answer for that beautiful property, she said. She also promised that the Waterfront Access Committee would be very active this year as it works to create a network of parks and paths along the Malden River. And a local cannabis committee will be scoping out the best ways to incorporate new marijuana laws and opportunities into the community. DeMaria also called on residents to do their part to build a caring community. “We have each other, she said. “Look to your neighbors, help when you can and respect one another. We are all Malden. DeMaria said that good government requires individuals who bring commitment, a strong work ethic and honesty to the table. “My promise is just that, she said.

Revere-Malden hockey battle back against Somerville By Julian Cardillo he Revere-Malden co-op hockey team got a scare from Somerville but ultimate-

T

ly pulled through to victory in a seesaw affair on Wednesday night. Despite allowing the Highlanders to equalize after tak-

ing a 3-1 lead, the Patriots re-asserted themselves and came out on top 4-3 to improve to 5-2-1 on the season.

www.reverealuminumwindow.com

“That was our first home game of the season and our first home win of the season,” said Revere coach Joe Ciccarello. “I’m glad we’re battling. In the past we’ve let tight games go the other way, but this season we haven’t let them get away.” Revere-Malden senior Mike Goroshko scored two consecutive goals to open the game. Wayne Cintolo scored the team’s third goal. Robert Stoica netted the game-winner for the Patriots. “We showed a lot of character,” said Ciccarello. “We

made big plays. Honestly we’ve been able to withstand bad plays and we’ve gotten better. We’re keeping our heads about us.” Revere-Malden’s next game is on Saturday against Gloucester. “They’re a very good team,” said Ciccarello of the Fishermen. “We have to play tight on our own end. We win our zone first. They’re going to generate offense but we have to make sure we win our zone. We can’t worry about our offense until we win our zone first.”

Tornadoes girls’ hoops throttles Madison Park By Julian Cardillo he Malden High girls’ basketball team was firmly in control on Wednesday night at Madison Park, hardly ever stuttering in their eventual 5222 win. Malden is currently 2-2 on the young season and play away at Swampscott next Monday before hosting Medford on Tuesday. Golden Tornadoes coach Scott Marino, now in his second season at the helm, believes his team has matured and has some momentum, though he continues to eye improvements. “I feel different than last year,

T

we get better every game we play, Marino said. “I think the expectations are just higher. It feels like, as a coach, that I’m where I was with them in the final week of last season. “We can still be better. We need to be better at man to man and rebounding and better at controlled offense. Malden demonstrated full control on Wednesday against Madison Park. The Golden Tornadoes took a 15-5 lead into the second quarter and turned it into a 31-7 halftime advantage. Marino opted to use his bench in the second half, with all players pitching in on both sides of the court.

“We got everyone involved, Marino said. “We played man to man the whole way. We were comfortable, moved the ball alright. In the second half we had a chance for the fast break but I called off the dogs. Tiffany Tortora led Malden scoring with 20 points. McKenzie Furlong was close behind with 16. “It’s nice to get this type of win, Marino added. “We were also pretty good on defense. We rebounded well the whole game. It was a nice, controlled victory. Malden are 0-2 in league play but get a chance to reverse that on Monday at Swampscott. That said, Marino is ex-

Tornadoes boys basketball stunned by Tewksbury rally By Julian Cardillo alden High boys’ basketball coach Don Nally isn’t sure if he knows what happened. A strong start and some slick shooting against Tewksbury on Wednesday night evaporated – quickly – as the hosts turned a 17-point deficit to start the game into a wild 52-51 comeback victory. Nally, beside himself in a post-game phone interview, tried to explain how his team managed to slip to 4-2. “Our energy level was fantastic in the first quarter but not so much in the second, Nally said. “We didn’t play well in the second half. We should no urgency, took bad shots, had costly turnovers, and handed them the game. “That should never have

M

happened. We’re a better team. I want my players to play for 32 minutes. Not 20. Thirty-two minutes. Malden started the game on a 17-0 run and ended the first quarter up, 21-3. Tewksbury showed signs of life in the second and third and completely out-worked the Golden Tornadoes in the fourth. Though Malden was up by 20 at one point in the game, they couldn’t hold off Tewksbury from fully realizing their rally. Thomas Redwood scored 15 points for Malden. Fern Berard chipped in 18. “But we really struggled in the fourth, Nally added. “We didn’t really score. Some untimely turnovers and careless errors at the free throw line further unraveled Malden.

“A lot of mental mistakes, a lot of complaining, Nally said. “Complaining about a call or about how you’re playing isn’t going to change the past. I’m a big believer in that. I think complaining only causes you to breakdown faster. Malden understandably wants a second bite at the apple. Were it not for the snow days on Thursday and Friday, Nally would have his team moving on from their poor finish to Tewksbury. “I wish we didn’t have those snow days, Nally said. “They’d be running all day. We did not play our best against Tewksbury. Malden faces Swampscott on Monday and play Medford Tuesday. However, next week concludes with a key game against Everett at home on Friday.

Tiffany Tortora led the Golden Tornadoes offense against Maddison Park Wednesday night, scoring 20 of Malden’s 51 points. (Advocate file photo)

pecting a stiff challenge. “They’re a smaller school and I expect them to play a different style of basketball, Mari-

no said. “I think they’ll go 2-21 with pressure, Marino said of Swampscott. “It should be a very tight game.
