Light night expected for opening session; residential pot sale ban won’t come up for weeks

By Mark E. Vogler here are 16 articles on the warrant for this year’s Annual Town Meeting, which convenes Monday (May 7) at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of Saugus Town Hall.

But only four of the articles – financial measures that are part of the town’s budget for the 2019 fiscal year that begins

on July 1 – are expected to be considered when the 50-member body assembles for the first of several sessions this month.

Most of the articles related to the 2019 fiscal year budget must be still be considered by the Finance Committee, which next week plans to continue its ongoing review of the town’s overall spending plan recommended by Town Manager

Saugus children in grades 1 through 8 will have the chance to learn about the sport of cross-country running and try it for themselves, to see if they like it. Saugus Community Track/Cross-Country will begin weekly â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fun Runsâ&#x20AC;? this Sunday (May 6) at Breakheart Reservation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no commitment for this program, and you may join in at any session,â&#x20AC;? Saugus native Stephen Boudreau said of the program he and running exercise buddy Chris Tarantino have organized and will be overseeing.

Boudreau, a 1965 Saugus High School graduate and track star and coach, and Tarantino â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a 1990 Saugus High School graduate who has a reputation for mentoring young athletes in track and cross-country â&#x20AC;&#x201C; collaborated last fall in bringing back cross-country running as an official middle school sport. The two friends have plans of expanding the running program to elementary school grades someday.

That lofty goal will hinge on the success of the new running program that debuts this weekend. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is really a three-step program,â&#x20AC;? Boudreau said in an interview this week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to get the kids who already ran in the middle school crosscountry program back to us.

Some highlights of this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interview follow.

Q: Please tell me a little bit about Saturday night, how that came into being and how many people you expect will attend.

Doucette: It came into being because last year we had just done a 25th anniversary of Desert Storm. And, through some of the information that we have received from the headquarters of the VFW, this is the 50th year of recognition, in commemoration of Vietnam. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a period of time that you partner with the Department of Defense and the VA (Veterans Administration) and they will send you a lot of material to help you to commemorate the actions and the activities of Vietnam and to solemnly remember those who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it back with us.

taken the bull by the horn and trying to do the best that it can.

Q: Okay, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to go around the table for just a little synopsis from everybody on how they look back on their Vietnam experience.

Doucette: If you think about taking a child off the streets -- and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m saying a child thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already graduated from High School, an older child -- off the streets of Saugus, Melrose, Wakefield or some other community -- and you stick him into Vietnam, you have an immediate awakening as to what life can mean and what happens in war. Even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get physically-wounded, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re morallywounded from what happens because it goes against everything youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been taught and everything that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned from your parents, your church. And from that, some of us stopped going to church because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a tough argument to have with yourself.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult to look back on some of the things. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lived through them. Some of us still go to counseling and talk about them. But, you do look back on some of the things that happened, and they were so funny. And, it seems terrible to have fun during a war. You can and you grow up real fast.

Real fast. And you become cynical, cold, judgmental. It changes you forever.

Q: James?

Marshall: The experience that I had â&#x20AC;Ś We were in-country one day, and then the next day you were back in the states. There was like no transition period. I found that tough. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like in World War II -- when they got on a boat, and it took them two weeks to come back.

Doucette: I coordinated it with these guys, with Billy, Jimmy, Louie, Stan. We all had a part in it. We all had a hand in it.

Q: Okay, please share with me some of your thoughts on this event.

Marshall: The biggest thing for me is feeling welcome after coming home. As you know what was going in the late 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. I feel as though this is our welcome home party.

Q: Long overdue?

Marshall: Probably so. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I feel.

Q: Louie?

Sirignano: I just wanted to say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been 50 years since we roamed around that country. And you know, you were a kid then and you went through it. Those memories are tough.

Q: How do you look upon this Saturday night?

Sirignano: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good event.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re showing some great respect to all Vietnam vets and era vets.

Come to a party and have a fun time among friends, talk about things or donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talk about things, whatever. Just have a good time.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky to be here. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all got things wrong with us from there (Vietnam). You know, you can only last so long.

Q: Stan?

King: I was pre-Vietnam. I was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;61-â&#x20AC;&#x2122;63. I was discharged and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go in-country in Vietnam.

But I heard enough about Vietnam that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to go. And I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time that we do honor the Vietnam veterans.

The Department of Defense has put in the Vietnam Era, which includes me. Butâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never said Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a Vietnam veteran. And, I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about time weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done something like this. And this post has

The Public’s Right to Know An ongoing series on the challenges of making open government work in Saugus

By Mark E. Vogler he most transparent public body in Saugus town government is the Finance Committee. And there is clearly no contest on that issue.

The committee’s longtime Chairman, Kenneth DePatto, is an outspoken advocate of the state’s Open Meeting Law. He takes the position that all town information received by his committee should be easily attainable by town residents because town fiscal matters involve public money. DePatto often loans reporters copies of financial documents introduced during his committee’s public hearings if extra copies aren’t available to the media.

“We strive to be transparent because we are dealing with the public’s money,” DePatto told The Saugus Advocate recently.

DePatto is one of five members of the committee who have two decades or more of experience reviewing the town’s municipal budgets before they are considered at Special or Annual Town Meetings.

Joining him as members with 20 years or more are Ronald “Rocky” Jepson, Theresa Kat-

sos, Louis J. Ross and George DeDomenico. Carl J. Mirabello has been on the committee for more than a decade, according to DePatto. That’s more than a century of collective service for one volunteer body that spends many hours over the winter and spring months lending fiscal expertise.

Every single document that is received by the body is a public document. And for town meeting members and other citizens who attend Finance Committee sessions, Finance Director and Treasurer/Collector Wendy Hatch usually comes with an armful of extra copies of financial data she has generated for the meeting. If there’s a crowd of citizens in attendance – which usually doesn’t happen – Town Meeting members are the priority recipients of these copies of fiscal documents. More often than not, I see Wendy Hatch or Kate Evans, the town manager’s communications specialist/administrative aide, lugging leftover copies from the first-floor conference room at Town Hall following the Finance Committee meetings.

The town manager has done his part to further the cause of

transparency as far as budget and fiscal information, encouraging Hatch to provide copies of the financial documents to the media and other citizens attending the meetings. Crabtree has also made a point this year of having copies of his recommended budget and other fiscal information available as soon as possible on the town website. After receiving several complaints about Town Meeting members and other citizens being denied access to budget information in recent years, this is something I have monitoring closely.

When it comes to the School Department and School Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr.; however, fiscal information has not been as readily available. On the night that Dr. DeRuosi did a PowerPoint presentation when he unveiled his budget, the superintendent would not make copies available. With some prodding from The Saugus Advocate, he eventually did have the requested budget-related information posted on the website.

Last year, during several of the School Committee’s Finance Subcommittee meetings, copies of proposed bud-

gets were not made available.

They should have been because it’s the public’s money, not Dr. DeRuosi’s or any member of the School Committee’s.

I’ve also heard of sitting School Committee members being denied School Department–related financial information. That should never happen.

In this day and age of computerized data, it should be no big deal for any department, committee or board that’s part of local government to put budget and other financial information that they have generated on the Town of Saugus website for all Saugus residents and taxpayers to see. Any citizen who has trouble getting any kind of fiscal information – including budgets, employee salaries, approved contracts, expense account information, property taxes and other information – should write a formal letter requesting that information under the state’s Public Records Law. And if they don’t receive the information or a reasonable explanation why not within 10 business days, they should send an appeal to the Supervisor of Public Records of the Secretary of the Common-

wealth’s Office.

The trip started with a tour of the city of ancient Rome, where the group visited the Colosseum, the Forum Romanum, the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

They gave their first formal performance at Saint Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basilica in Vatican City, offering their voices in song and prayer, participating in mass spoken in Italian.

The following day, the boys toured the Saint Callixtus Catacombs, a 13-mile, four-level cemetery buried in volcanic rock beneath the Roman countryside. After lunch, the group toured the beautiful Jesuit Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, where both Saint Ignatius and Saint Aloysius are buried. The choir sang during

mass and then continued with a few extra songs at the priestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request.

On the third day, the choir visited Istituto Massimo Jesuit School and participated in a Friendship Concert. Both choirs performed some of their favorite songs and then shared the stage for a few tunes familiar to both choirs: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hallelujahâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do, Re, Mi.â&#x20AC;? Following lunch at the school, the choir travelled back to the city for a tour of the Galleria Borghese, where they saw the statues and paintings of Gina Lorenzo Bernini, Tiziano, Raffaello and Caravaggio.

On the last day, the choir rose early and returned to Saint Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Square for an audience with Pope Francis. After staking claim to a section along the barricades, the boys experienced the wonder of the popeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presence, cheering â&#x20AC;&#x153;Papaâ&#x20AC;? as he passed by and collecting precious pictures to remember the day. A freshman remarked: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The papal audience was truly as-

tounding. It is a sight that I will never forget. To see the leader of the church of over a billion people, is something that not many people can say they have seen. He is one of the most holy people on the planet, and looking at him is like looking at a glimmer of God.â&#x20AC;?

After listening to the pope speak, the choir spent some free time eating lunch along the Tiber River and shopping for souvenirs. The day ended with a tour of the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and Saint Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Basilica. The overall experience traveling as a group united in song and prayer is what these students will remember most.

Sirignano: This event is so good, and I’m glad it’s going on.

We’re going to have fun, you know. Nam was Nam. That was 50 years ago and you’ve got to move on and get away from them dreams.

Q: So, this event helps with healing process?

Sirignano: I think so. You know, it’s been 50 years. There have been other events in the past. But, you keep it going and you just roll with what’s left at the end. You know.

We’ve all seen people die in Vietnam. So, they’re gone. It was 50 years ago. And here we are. We’re still here. So, we’re the lucky ones, I guess.

Q: Stan?

King: I just want to say that in all wars -- all conflicts have their own problems. World War II had theirs.

In Korea, it was mostly freezing. In Vietnam, it was in the jungle. Vietnam, unfortunately, was a criticized war. It’s about time we honor veterans of the Vietnam War. Marshall: The Vietnam War was a very unpopular war with the public. And, Q: This is an individual thing. Let’s go around the table again. As far as closure to the Vietnam War, do you think you will see closure in your lifetime, or will the wounds always be there?

Doucette: The pictures will always be there. What happened will always be there. It’s how you

deal with it. Will there be closure?

I don’t know. Nothing is definite in life. Nothing. You just have to learn how to deal with it. You use the tools that counseling will give you to try to help you make it through it. All I’m looking to do his help veterans recognize and celebrate themselves for what they did and what they accomplished … and their families, because there were sacrifices from their families to get all of this done. And they need to be recognized for that because they never were. It’s our job to do that, particularly for the families of our brothers and sisters who did not come home. We need to make that good, to honor them.

Q: Is there anything more that America or the government can do?

Doucette: I don’t know if there’s anything more the government would do. They can’t even get the VA to run right. So, I would never expect them to help us. We do what we can do with the tools that we have, and we survive -- which is what we’ve all done.

Q: Billy? Do you want to share anything?

Boomhower: I’ll tell you. … We were weighed in basic training.

We were tested in combat. And when we come home, we weren’t found wanted. That was a hell of a homecoming. It was worse than Vietnam. You know, one of the best things a guy could do back

then … was to serve this freaking country. And when we come home, throw your uniform away.

Get arrested. It’s like a woman having a baby that’s a beautiful thing.

But everyone is around here, telling her she’s a slut now. How does that work for you? I gotta go now.

I get emotional when I talk about this. It’s very difficult.

Q: So, what would you like the public to understand about this war?

Doucette: I think the public -- because of what the Vietnam veteran has gone through -- the public has learned from us that the veterans -- regardless of the war, regardless of who sent them there, regardless of whether it’s a popular war or not -- that they all need to be supported fully. And they’ve learned that from the way that we were treated. I guess that we were the guinea pig. We had nothing to do with why we were there. And it didn’t make a difference whether you were there or were not there. If you were in uniform, you were treated the same during this period of time.

Whether you were in-country or out-of-country, you were treated the same, which is why this commemoration is inclusive of Vietnam Era veterans, not just Vietnam in-country veterans. I think the public needs to know and has learned that Vietnam veterans have taught them that we need to support all veterans at all times.

Q: James?

Marshall: My biggest thing for myself is to make sure that veterans today are not treated the way we were back in the 60’s and 70’s. And, so education of the public has been great. When you walk around with a military hat, people come up to you and say “Thank you for your service.”That’s something that’s incredible. That all came after the first Gulf War. I think the publicity of that war set the tone for the way things are today. And we learned from the mistakes that were made before that war. As Bill (Boomhower) said, we went over there to do a job. We weren’t political. We just went over there to do a job. And we were penalized for it on our return home, and for many years later.

Q: Louie?

Sirignano: Again, 50 years have gone by. We’re still around to tell the stories. Let’s have some fun here. That’s it.

Q: Stan?

King: I think it’s overdue. But, the “thank you’s” of today are un-

believable. I don’t think a day goes by when somebody doesn’t thank me for my service. It’s really nice to have people say “Thank You.” Q: Anything else that you would like to say?

Marshall: I have a couple of things I’d like to say.

This first one is, we all got out of there in the late 60’s or early 70’s.

And the first Gulf War was in ‘91.

It was 20 years when practically none of us ever talked about the war or even admitted that we were there. The only people who knew were our close relatives. I never told anybody. For 20 years, I had that hidden in my heart. I want to make sure that people know that.

And then the second thing is that everybody has many, many choices for charities and stuff.

And, I’d like to put a plug in for “Run to Home Base,” which is an organization that is set up to help veterans after the conflict that

A POLICE ESCORT: A Saugus police cruiser turns right from Hamilton Street onto Round Hill Street, where a police escort for 2-year-old Ketlyn Souza ends in the Public Safety Building with a special reception hosted by Saugus Police and a representative from Cops for Kids with Cancer.

Saugus Police Chief Domenic J. DiMella – while reporters fired away questions. But the young Saugus girl will be able to surf the Internet and read about the loving support she and her family received through the Cops for Kids with Cancer program, including a $5,000 check to help cover expenses related to her ongoing medical treatment.

“This little girl has been through so much in her short two years of life,” Chief DiMella said last Friday.

Ketlyn is one of eight children being treated for cancer who were recipients this month of a $5,000 check from Cops for Kids with Cancer “to help them get through some financial problems,” according to retired Boston Police Captain Ed McNelley, a member of the Cops for Kids with Cancer Board of Directors.

Ketlyn was diagnosed with Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in her right thigh last August at Boston Children’s Hospital. Soon after, the young girl began che-

motherapy treatment and underwent a surgical procedure called rotationplasty, where a portion of a limb is removed while the remaining limb below the involved portion is rotated and reattached, according to Lilliana Lopera-Jimenez, B.S., a Senior Pediatric Oncology Resource Specialist at DanaFarber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.

Ketlyn has about 20 more cycles of chemotherapy to undergo.

“Raquel works cleaning houses, but due to her daughter’s illness and required care, it has been very challenging or almost impossible for her to work,” Lopera-Jimenez wrote in a letter to Cops for Kids with Cancer earlier this year, recommending the girl’s family for financial assistance.

“Raquel’s boyfriend, Romerito (DaSilva) works as a carpenter and makes between $1,188 and $1,300 biweekly; which makes it very difficult for the family to keep up with their rent, utilities and the many added outof-pocket, medical and related expenses (e.g. gas, tolls, parking, meals at the hospital) they have endured since Ketlyn was diagnosed with cancer,” LoperaJimenez said.

“This mom is one that typically does not like to ask for help but she did recently let me know that their finances are quite strained and they are behind on their February rent payment. I was able to find her partial rent help through a donor … at Dana-Farber, but a grant from Cops for Kids with Cancer will certainly help them get back on their feet,” she wrote.

Cops for Kids with Cancer decided to award one of its $5,000 monthly grants to Ketlyn’s family.

Editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Note: The following is a short interview we had with Doucette about last Saturday night Q: So, how did it go last Saturday?

We had between 130 and 140 people. We had 52 veterans and they all brought somebody with them. These veterans came from

Saugus, Wakefield, Melrose, East Falmouth, Middleton, Somerville, Reading, Beverly, New Hampshire and maybe a few other places. I was very pleased with the amount of people who showed up. Pastor Bob Leroe did the invocation and he hit home when he said how poorly the country treated the returning Vietnam veteran. That set the tone for the night.

It was good to see so many turn out and finally recognize some of them. You could tell some of them hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been recognized. Although, people walk up to you if you have an identifying marker, like a shirt or hat on. And theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll

But to have an event like this, and just honestly thank them for being there and doing what they did -- and answering the call when their country asked them to do a job. And, it was good to see their faces, see the honesty that was reflected in the response, their gratefulness, it was rewarding to me and the rest of the committee to be able to do that for these veterans because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re here for. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re here to help veterans, and if we help somebody and if somebody wants to join here now because they had a good time here that night, then we helped one person and we did our job.

Q: So, last Saturday night was a lot more relaxation and entertainment and camaraderie than the war stories?

Doucette: Yea, it was. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure there were a few war stories told here and there. But, it was a lot of joking and ribbing each other about the branch of the service -- like we always do. It was good to see happy, smiling faces when sometimes you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see that, because they were with other veterans and they could talk openly if they wanted to. There was nothing to hold them back. And they enjoyed themselves. They all enjoyed themselves.

Q: And you gave recognition to the three Vietnam veterans who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it back from Saugus?

Doucette: Correct. We gave recognition to (Marine Cpl Michael) Deprofio, (Army PFC Richard) Devine and (Army SP4 Stanley) Egan. We held a moment of silence. And we included them specifically, but the moment of silence also include the 58,000 plus names that are on the wall. But we singled out these three guys from Saugus.

Q: Where do you go from here?

What do you do for an encore?

Doucette: Yea, what do I do for an encore? I have to plan other events with those who partner in this program. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if they will be as big as this. But, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do something. For the rest of this year, we have already lined up the Chelsea Soldiers Home to come here for a cookout. I think they are coming in June. And we have also lined up a date to go to the Chelsea Soldiers Home and hold a Christmas party for them.

So, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s we have on the calendar right now, along with selling poppies on Memorial Day Weekend and the parade on Memorial Day Weekend and figuring out what we are going to do on Veterans Day. As for the next party, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up in the air. We have to figure out what we want to do and how to pay for it. It took us a long time to raise the money for last Saturday night.

Q: Do you think the public attitude is changing toward the Vietnam Era veteran?

Doucette: I think the public attitude has changed a while ago toward the veterans who are coming home â&#x20AC;Ś you can go back 26, 27 years now to Desert Storm.

When they came home, they were all welcomed home. When the Iraq-Afghan veterans came home, they were all welcomed home. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re welcomed home

by Hometown USA. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re welcomed home by their communities and by the country, but they still have to fight for what they want to get out of the VA. Dealing with the VA can be demoralizing at times. But you just have to con-

tinue to fight like you did when you were in the military. I think the Vietnam veteran was a big part of that change in that we suffered through the worst homecoming that the country could ever give a group or a generation that went to war. And, I think we were part of the turnaround. We became vocal about it after a while because it was pretty disgusting, but happened. Some people who never even went to the war and never even left the country were treated very poorly and had nothing to do with it (Vietnam). They answered the call. We answered the call that our country made and we went and did a job. If you have a problem with the people that created the war, deal with those people. You donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mistreat the troops.

The only reason that you can act like an idiot, is because the troops have earned that right for you.

And you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mistreat the troops.

Q: Anything else?

Doucette: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just very pleased with the turnout and how it came across. And, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m very satisfied with the look on everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face when we called them up individually, one by one, read their name, brought them up here. Everybody clapped for them on the way up.

We held them here over on the side and we got some pictures. It was good to see their faces.

Like I said on Saturday night, Back in the 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, our Vietnam Veterans received the call of duty and responded. Some were drafted into the military, while others volunteered. In all cases these Veterans did what their country asked of them without question. They made individual sacrifices and their families made sacrifices. The Veterans life was changed forever, they left Hometown USA to join the military. Some of us went to Vietnam, while others remained outside in support of that effort.

That didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean you were safe if you were not in Vietnam. Some of those outside of Vietnam were exposed to Toxins which affected them, their children and grandchildren, as were all of those who were incountry. Regardless of where the

Meanwhile, perhaps the most controversial article on the warrant â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Article 14, which would prohibit the sale of recreational marijuana in town â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is not expected to be considered until later in the month. The Planning Board has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed amendment to the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s zoning bylaws at 7:45 p.m. during its meeting which is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. The proposed article would amend the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s zoning bylaws to prohibit â&#x20AC;&#x153;the operation of any marijuana establishment â&#x20AC;Ś including, without limitation, a marijuana cultivator, marijuana testing facility, marijuana product manufacturer, marijuana retailer or any other licensed marijuana-related businessâ&#x20AC;? in all zoning districts of the town. The prohibition would not apply to the sale, distribution or cultiva-

tion of marijuana for medical purposes licensed by the state.

Voters statewide approved Question 4 by a 54-percent margin, allowing the possession, use, distribution and cultivation of limited amounts of marijuana by persons age 21 and older. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to Town Meeting to decide to adopt the will of the voters,â&#x20AC;? Crabtree said.

Saugus softball team captures pair of blowout wins

By Julian Cardillo he Saugus softball team ended April and started May the same way: by scoring lots of runs and shutting down teams. Saugus took a 15-0 victory over Lynn English on Monday and followed up with an 11-2 victory against Northeast Vocational on Tuesday.

Caitlyn Wood and Leah Ventre split pitching duties against Lynn English. The pair combined for 10 strikeouts and conceded just two hits and two walks.

Every Saugus player got a hit against Lynn English. “Offensively, we pounded out 15 hits and had a number of key performers,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist.

Wood led the way with three hits and five RBIs. Madison Niles (three RBIs) had two hits. Gaby Surette also captured two hits, one of them being her first varsity contact. Ditto goes for Jessica Carter and Rebecca Prezioso. Ashley Shaw went one for three with a triple and three RBIs; Taylor Bogdanski went one for two. Brittney Sudano-

wicz was one for two with two RBIs. Saugus kept up their offensive form the next night in an 11-2 blowout of Northeast Vocational. “We kept the momentum going [from Monday] and wasted no time getting on the board,” Almquist said.

In the top of the first, freshman Alexa Ferraro blasted her first varsity home run over the left field fence for an early 1-0 lead. With two outs, Bogdanski singled to score Emma Howard, who got on base on a walk, to increase the lead to 2-0. The Sa-

chems plated three more in the top of the third courtesy of singles by Ferraro and Wood and a double by Bogdanski.

Northeast scored twice – one run unearned – in the home half of the third, making the score 5-2.

In the top of the fifth, Saugus batted around the order and scored four more times to put the game away. In the top of the sixth, Saugus capped off the scoring by pushing two more across on a two-run single by Howard.

Wood pitched seven innings

and gave up three hits; she tallied 11 strikeouts.

Howard went three for three with three RBIs and two walks.

Bogdanski was three for four with two RBIs. Ferraro, who also had two RBIs, went two for three.

“We are starting to play a little better, and it was nice to get a couple of wins to help build the kids’ confidence,” Almquist said. “However, we still have a long way to go and just need to keep working hard every day. As long as we do this, good things will continue to happen.”

Saugus’s extra-innings win over Medford one to remember

winning run in a wild, comefrom-behind victory that gives the Sachems a victory over a Northeastern Conference (NEC) power.

“Just an emotional roller coaster, such an amazing win,” said Saugus coach Joe Luis. “I think it’s one of the best Saugus wins in years. Everyone was so invested.”

Thirteen different players factored into the Sachems’ win.

Though the game ended with 11 runs in extra innings, all seemed routine through the first five innings. Medford took a 1-0 lead into the sixth, then added three runs in their half of the inning.

Saugus bats woke up as Ronnie Paolo and Jackson Stanton

both singled to get on base.

An RBI double by Mike Mabee, who also served as the game’s starting pitcher, scored both baserunners to make it a 4-2 game.

Luis withdrew Mabee in the seventh, replacing him with reliever Dominic Clark. Clark got out of the seventh inning without too much trouble, setting

Letters to the Editor SHS students speak in support of Amy Guider, outgoing Executive Assistant to the Superintendent (Editor’s Note: The Saugus Advocate recently received three letters emailed from Saugus High School students expressing their support for Amy Guider, the executive assistant to Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr., in response to the superintendent’s decision not to renew her contract. These letters were initially sent to the Saugus School Committee and are being published in this week’s paper at the students’ request. Dr. DeRuosi has chosen not to respond to our request for comment to the letters, which follow.)

Dear Saugus Advocate, This is a forward of a letter I wrote to the Saugus School Committee after the executive assistant to the Superintendent was let go from her job.

Solomon Ortiz once said “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.” Spending my entire school career thus far learning from Saugus Public Schools, I can truly attest to Ortiz’s statement. The people inside the schools have shaped me into the person I have become. Becoming Secretary for the Class of 2018 and Vice President of

National Honor Society were not accomplishments I could had made on my own.

One person in particular who has always been my greatest asset was recently let go from her job, Mrs. Amy Guider. It is an extreme disappointment to hear this news. Fortunately, I have known Mrs. Guider since I was in preschool. She was an active member of the community at the Veterans Memorial School, as well as various sports programs throughout town. As a student at Belmonte Middle School, Mrs. Guider was always there for me.

She worked closely with students, and always knew how to inspire them to work harder. Mrs. Guider taught students about work ethic, organization skills, studying strategies, and time management. She always made sure she was available to help any student, regardless of who they were. Between both school and social aspects, she was always there with a smile on her face, willing to help anyone in need.

Although Mrs. Guider moved to a new job in the school system after I graduated Belmonte, she still made her presence known. Any time one of my various clubs needed assistance or help creating and organizing a community event, she was always first to help.

Mrs. Guider went the extra mile for us every time, even

when she did not have to.

Her working closely with the Superintendent allowed the students a way to communicate ideas and events. Without her, many service projects and fundraisers would not have occurred. Especially during these times, communication between students and the Superintendent is important.

Students and faculty are still concerned with issues such as school safety, after a relatively unsuccessful school-wide assembly.

It is very disheartening to see Mrs. Amy Guider be released from her position after all her years of service to Saugus. She is a living embodiment of what Sachem Pride is. It is unfortunate that her hard work has gone unnoticed. I believe that Solomon Ortiz would find that Mrs. Guider exceeds his expectations of what a teacher and role model should be, and that our expectations at Saugus Public School’s should as well.

Ever since I first met Amy, she’s always kept a big smile on her face and put others before herself in every situation. Amy has always been like a second mother to me, but her amazing qualities extend much further. Amy Guider is a true superhero to anyone who knows her. My teachers often ask me about my relationship to her and say how truly impressive She is in her job with her organizational skills. I have unfortunately been informed that She is being let go of her Assisting position to the superintendent. If there’s anyone who cares so much about the students of the Saugus public schools, it’s Amy. On behalf of Saugus High School, we are extremely devastated by this and hope you take the time to consider renewing her contract.

Amy Guider is a true unsung hero who deserves to keep her position as executive assistant because of her true love for this community and her passion for its children. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my concern and I hope you will consider my desires in my email.

I know many of the students I have interacted with over the years have written letters and attended a recent School Committee Meeting to express their appreciation for my work and contribution to the Saugus Public Schools as well as to their individual achievements. The students have always made me proud and con-

tinue to do so. They are amazing and will go on to accomplish great things. They are the successes of Saugus and have touched my heart in ways they will never imagine. My heart is full. I thank them for that.

I have had the pleasure of working in the Saugus Public Schools in several capacities for over 12 years and loved

every position. I envisioned concluding my career here.

Saugus has been on the brink of building new schools for a number of years now and I was looking forward to being a part of that. After many years, and the hard work of dedicated people, the building of new Saugus schools appears to be coming to fruition. I am

sure those dedicated people will see the planning through to its successful conclusion. I wish I was going to be part of it all, but rest assured I will be watching from a different vantage point cheering them on.

Housing Authority commissioner wants town to reimburse for year-old cost of repairing broken water pipe

expense of repairing a water main break back in February of 2017. Selectmen at last week’s meeting approved a request by Stewart to insert an article on the warrant for the

next Special Town Meeting to see if the town will appropriate $14,409.28 to cover the expense. “ The Town routinely absorbs the cost of water main breaks even in unapproved roads wherever they may occur,” Stewart wrote in the proposed article submitted to selectmen.

“The Town decided at the time to not pay this charge and the Authority paid the bill expecting to be reimbursed by the town,” he wrote.

Stewart, who is also a Town Meeting member of Precinct 3, noted the town never charges homeowners for water pipe repairs – an expense that the Housing Authority is expected

to pay. He posed this question to selectmen: If the Housing Authority has to replace all of the pipes on Housing Authority property, would the Authority have to pay for those expenses?

“It could result in a lot of money,” Stewart said.

Selectmen agreed to have the question considered at a future Special Town Meeting.

Saugus Residential LLC seeks a Comprehensive Permit under the state law known as Chapter 40B, which allows the developer to forgo certain local zoning bylaws and restrictions, providing at least 25 percent of its units of a housing project are designated as “affordable.”

Town Announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off Site The Town of Saugus announces that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works at 515 Main Street.

There is no pre-registration or fee required to enter the site, however proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, and glass containers.

Additional acceptable items include: TVs and computers (up to three per year per address); bulky rigid plastic items such as Little Tikes toys, laundry baskets, Rubbermaid

trash barrels, 5-gallon pails, etc.; car tires up to 22” (for a fee of $3); and textiles such as books, clothing, bedding, pocketbooks, belts, and shoes.

Plastic bags are not permitted. Residents are kindly asked to empty recyclables out of any plastic bags, and remove the bags from the site.

Saugus Garden Club Annual Meeting The Saugus Garden Club presents its Annual Open Meeting & Fundraiser on Wednesday, May 16. This is a “perennial” favorite among experienced gardeners as well as the “brown thumb” crowd.

Paul Parent of the Paul Parent Garden Club Show™, will be this year’s guest speaker. Paul has been on the radio providing gardening advice to listeners in New England for the last 33 years. His expert gardening advice is heard on stations all over the country with one-half million loyal listeners.

Paul hails originally from Auburn, Maine. His family moved to Scituate, Massachusetts when Paul was 13. Graduating from Scituate High in 1967 with an eye toward a career in horticulture, Paul enrolled in Stockbridge School of Agriculture, University of Massachusetts. He spent his academic time in Stockbridge totally immersed in floriculture, landscaping, and turf management studies and graduated with degrees in Floriculture and Landscaping.

Program on World War II Servicemen at Saugus Historical Society May 9 Janice Jarosz will be presenting a program on Saugus Service Men and Women of World War II next Wednesday (May 9) at 7 PM at The Saugus Historical Society meeting, at 30 Main Street.

She currently writes a column on that topic for the Saugus Advertiser. Drawing on her research, her talk for the Saugus Historical Society will be Saugus Servicemen’s Special Volume II. Janice Jarosz is a well-known Saugus resident who has served the town in many ways. She was the 2008 Woman of the Year, honored for her long volunteer work and elected positions. Just to name a few, she has been a member of the Conservation Commission, a Town Meeting Member, and a selectman. She was chairman of the town’s first recycling committee, president of the M.E.G. Foundation which preserved the old Cliftondale School, and the first female voting member of the Saugus Youth Hockey Board of Directors. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she has always had an ac-

Memorial Day Parade Saugus Veterans Council Memorial Day Parade & Ceremonies to be held on Saturday, May 26. The Parade will step-off at 9:30 am from Jackson Street to Lincoln Avenue to Central Street to Winter Street to Riverside Cemetery where there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony held. The Parade will reform and march from Riverside Cemetery, Winter Street to Central Street to Town Hall where a ceremony will be held.

Spring Curbside Leaf Collection this month The Town of Saugus announces that spring curbside leaf collection will take place during the week of May 14. Residents may dispose of leaves curbside on their regularly scheduled collection day, between Monday, May 14 and Friday, May 18.

Leaves should be left outside by 7 a.m. on the appropriate days. Please ensure that leaf containers are physically separated from trash and recycling.

Paper leaf bags are the preferred method of leaf disposal. If using barrels, however, they must be clearly marked with yard waste stickers.

Stickers, which are free, may be obtained at Inspectional Services in the lower level of Town Hall, at 298 Central Street, Saugus. Barrel covers must remain removed so that the leaves are visible.

Plastic bags, cardboard boxes, branches and brush will not be accepted.

Please note that separate trucks collect the rubbish, recycling and leaves, so the leaves may be collected at a different time of day.

“Missed pick-ups” will not be conducted.

HE WAS MORE THAN A GOALIE: The story of Ken Dryden

By The Old Sachem, Bill Stewart e n n e t h Wa y n e “ K e n” Dryden, PC OC, was born August 8, 1947, in Hamilton, Ontario, and was raised in Islington, Ontario. His brother Dave was also a National Hockey League (NHL) goaltender.

I always thought of Dryden as the best goaltender that I have ever seen. He stood 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 205 pounds. His record is awesome although he only played in the NHL from 1970 to 1979.

But there is still more to the man – a college degree, an author, a TV commentator, a president of the Maple Leafs, and elected to the Canadian Parliament, which is quite a reach for a hockey player.

In the 1963-1964 hockey season he played for the Humber Valley Packers of the Metro Toronto Hockey League (MTHL) Junior League and in 1964-1965 for the Etobicoke Indians of the

MTHL, now the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

He was drafted by the Boston Bruins 14th overall in the 1964 NHL draft and was traded to the Montreal Canadians a few days later. Because the Canadians had sufficient stoppers at the time, he opted to get an education.

Rather than play for the Canadians, he enrolled in the Ivy League school Cornell University in upstate New York as a recruit hockey player. Dryden was redshirted for the 1965-1966 season, then starred at Cornell University from 1966-1967 to 1969-1970.

At Cornell he played shortstop on the baseball team as a freshman but concentrated on hockey from his sophomore year on.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and was a member of the Quill and Dagger Society. He was in goal as the Cornell Big Red won the 1967 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship, won three consecutive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) champion-

Dryden was three times ECAC First Team, three times ECAC Hockey All-Tournament First Team, three times American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) East All-American, 1967 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-Tournament First Team and twice NCAA All-Tournament Second Team.

His jersey, #1, was retired at Cornell on February 25, 2010.

The “Les Habitants” put him in the Montreal Voyageurs of the American Hockey League (AHL) to gain experience, where he had a record of 16 wins, 7 losses and 8 ties, with a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 2.68. His first season with the Canadians he won all 6 starts as shutouts with a GAA of 1.65. His Montreal statistics are 258 wins, 74 losses, 46 shutouts and a GAA of 2.24. He also starred for Team Canada in 1969 and 1972 in the world championships.

Dryden sat out the 1973-1974 season, unhappy with the contract he was offered, but returned in 1974 to resume his career. He used the year off and became a legal clerk at the Toronto law firm of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. He completed his law degree at McGill University and retired after the 1978-1979 season at 31 years of age.
