fter a year-long battle with cancer, Everett’s first and only active-duty female firefighter passed away Wednesday. Susan Pipitone, 56, of Haverhill, joined the Everett Fire Department on May 26, 1993, the first woman to ever do so. For 12 years, Pipitone drove Engine 1, often riding with current Fire Chief and then-Captain Anthony Carli. “It was a sad loss for the department,� said Carli of her passing. “Not only was she our first female fighter, she was a great member of the department and a great person.
