Tickets

Youth Tickets: Up to two youth, aged 15 and under, will be admitted free with a ticketed adult all week long. All youth aged six and older must have a ticket in order to access hospitality venues.

Military and veteran tickets: New in 2022, all military and veteran tickets will be digital and must be secured in advance through an online verification system.

Once the redemption process is complete, tickets can be accessed instantly. Tickets are available while supplies last.

Parking passes are required on all tournament days, Tuesday — Sunday.

Volunteers will not sell parking passes in the lot, and parking will not be sold at Will Call.

“Four or more for free” parking vouchers are not available in 2022.

Tuesday and Wednesday parking costs $15 per day and Thursday through Sunday costs $40 per day.

Rideshare: Rideshares will drop off and pick up at the Couples Entry off of ATP Boulevard, which is just steps from the 15th hole. Rideshare vehicles will be staged outside the Couples Entry making this one of the easiest modes of transportation for spectators.

Pedal to THE PLAYERS: THE PLAYERS offers complimentary bike parking during the tournament, from the time entries open until end of play. Spectators can ride their bikes to Gate B located inside the Sawgrass Gates off of PGA TOUR Boulevard in the back of lot 4 only (110 PGA TOUR Blvd.).

Bike racks are available free of charge. Bike parking is not available in the general parking lot.

Golf Cart Parking: THE PLAYERS offers complimentary Golf Cart parking services Tuesday through Sunday at Gate B located inside the TPC Sawgrass Gates off of PGA TOUR Blvd in the back of lot 4 only (110 PGA TOUR Blvd.). Golf cart parking is free of charge and is available from the time entries open until end of play.

Services:

THE PLAYERS Disabled Guest Services program provides shuttles during the championship. Fans who have handicap parking access are still required to purchase a parking pass in advance for THE PLAYERS

general parking lot (off County Road 210).

Fans with a handicap parking hang tag, as well as a PLAYERS parking pass, will be directed to park in a specific part of the general parking lot. From there, golf carts will take them to one of the designated Disabled Guest Services locations on the golf course.

Carts will run from the time gates open until 30 minutes after play ends and will only pick up and drop off from the below designated locations. They will not stray from the official route under any circumstances.

Meet Tournament Chair  BY TIFFANY MERLO PHELPS

ut of the many committees Matt Welch has served on over the past 15 years volunteering at THE PLAYERS, there is one committee that stands out the most to him: Ecology.

“That is the code word we used to hide the fact that our job was to collect and throw away trash created by the huge galleries and venues,” said Welch, who is now THE PLAYERS Tournament Chair. “While it was an exhausting and thankless job, something about being in the trenches with other volunteers and knowing the job had to be done and done well was remarkably rewarding.” Welch said he was able to shift his focus from the corporate world and instead work alongside likeminded volunteers with one common goal. “I honestly thought when I told this story during my leadership interview with the Past Chairman’s group, I might be dismissed for being a little nuts. But they understood.

They had all been there before and knew firsthand the volunteers’ passion for the tournament literally from the grounds up.” It is a passion that Welch still has today, now overseeing 2,000 volunteers who not only ensure a great tournament, but make it possible for so many Northeast Florida charities to benefit from it all.

Q: How does it feel to be the 2022

Tournament Chairman for THE PLAYERS? A: There are a host of emotions that go into being the chairman of THE PLAYERS Tournament, and I am extremely proud to lead such a dedicated group of volunteers. It’s a very humbling experience.

Being part of putting on a Championship Tournament that fields the greatest golfers in the world is incredible in itself. But, the bigger story for me is what we are able to do for our community. Especially for those most in need.

Q: How did you first get involved with THE PLAYERS? A: I was like so many other patrons attending and enjoying the tournament before I got involved as a volunteer. At one point, I was lucky enough to have

a couple of past chairmen suggest I join the ranks and do more than watch golf from the gallery. Over time, I learned more about the volunteer’s critical role in the tournament’s success and its impact on so many charities in our region. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Q: How do you feel about the volunteers?

A: Becoming a member of the leadership group and eventually serving as chairman has simply added to my love and appreciation for the role of our volunteers. This group has earned the title of the “Greatest Volunteers in Golf,” and I am proud to be associated with them.

Q: Do you love to play golf?

A: I guess you could consider golf to be a passion

of mine. It’s a sport you can play and enjoy well into life’s later years and, as long as you don’t take yourself too seriously, it helps satisfy my natural competitive nature.

Q: Could you share a personal story that has impacted you from THE PLAYERS? A: I have had many opportunities to be present when we presented checks or gifts to the hard-working charities of Northeast Florida. In addition to checks we have provided items like custom buses and carts for organizations like PAL [Police Athletic League] and “Camp I am Special” to help them with their daily efforts to provide for those in need.

I cannot say enough about the work these organizations do on a daily basis. They are the true heroes and deserve our support.

» 1982: The Tournament Players Championship moves to its new, permanent home: TPC Sawgrass – Stadium Course. The course is unique, beautiful, challenging and fanfriendly. Jerry Pate hit a fabulous 5-iron (with an orange ball) to within three feet to seal the victory. Then Pate enjoyed an extraordinary celebration; he threw then-PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman and course designer Pete Dye into the pond near the 18th green during the awards ceremony, and dove into

the pond himself for an unprecedented victory lap.

1992: As he was about to hit a chip shot back onto the 8th green in the final round, Davis Love III overheard spectators betting on whether he could get up and down.

Love promptly chipped in and told the guys in the gallery who bet against him, “I hope all of you lost.” Love didn’t lose on Sunday; he won by four shots for his first PLAYERS title.

2002: Not too many golf fans had heard of Craig Perks before the 2002 PLAYERS. Now,

nobody will ever forget how Perks finished the tournament — looking for his first TOUR title, he chipped in for eagle at 16, sank a long birdie putt at 17 and then chipped in for a par at 18. Traditionally, the previous year’s PLAYERS winner hands the trophy to the next champion. An impressed Tiger Woods handed the trophy to Perks and said, “You’re unbelievable.”

2012: Matt Kuchar escaped a fairway bunker at the difficult, par-4 14th hole with

clutch 5-iron out of the sand, over the trees and onto the green for a par en route to victory.

The club he used for this great save is now on display in the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse — with donated clubs from each past champion.

2017: On the strength of a daring driver off the deck from the right rough on the par-4 14th on Saturday, Si Woo Kim fired weekend scores of 68-69 to become the youngest winner of THE PLAYERS, and the event’s second Korean champion along with 2010 winner K.J. Choi.

hen Russell Knox decided to pursue becoming a golf pro, he was all in from the start even as a Jacksonville University student who traveled from Scotland to attend college on a golf scholarship.

W

“There was no back-up plan. It was golf until we made it,” said Knox, who credits his wife Andrea (a former tennis pro) with supporting him through the journey of becoming a professional golfer when they met 15 years ago.

“She has been a part of this crazy journey with me.”

Knox turned pro in 2007 after winning a Monday qualifier in the Korn Ferry Tour, a pivotal moment for Russell, now 36. His career victories include: PGA TOUR (two), Korn Ferry Tour (one) and one International — the 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation.

His Player Statistics show that he has a Career Low Round of 62 at the 2014 BMW Championship (Round 4), a Career High FedExCup Rank (No. 1) at the 2016 OHL Classic at Mayakoba and a Career High Official World Golf Rank (No. 18) at the 2017 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Knox has learned many lessons from the struggles

leading up to the moment he turned pro, including blocking out distractions and preserving authenticity.

“You have to stick to what your golfing DNA is. Golf is a very selfish game. You are all alone,” said Knox.

“If I could talk to my rookie self, I would say, ‘Put your sunglasses on and don’t look left and don’t look right. Just look forward’.”

Knox’s story begins in Inverness, Scotland, where he enjoyed playing golf and soccer at a young age. As time went on, he realized that his true focus would be golf as he got more serious and skilled at around age 16; however, his approach was a little more relaxed than

most, especially compared to today’s standards.

“I was not practicing 10 hours a day,” said Knox. “It was more like ‘it is a nice day out, let’s play some golf.’ You can play golf for a lifetime, so it is a slow process. You will burn out if you practice too hard. I think taking my time ultimately helped me in my game.”

Knox said the only difference between playing golf in Scotland versus the United States is the weather and the design of the golf courses, obviously facing more water and lakes on Florida courses. And, of course, humidity is a huge factor.

“I never sweat when I play

in Scotland,” joked Knox.

“I always like to say that a 7-iron in the US is the same 7-iron in Australia. Golf is all about taking shots.”

As for playing at THE PLAYERS, Knox said he typically takes a week off prior to the event, so that he is well rested and “ready to rumble” once everything begins.

“The week goes by super fast. I just try to manage my stress level with wanting to do well and also finding calm before the tournament,” he said, adding that family and friends also come out to watch him play.

“It is really great to have such a massive tournament so close to your house.”

Father/Daughter duo bond at THE PLAYERS

adison Fangman began volunteering at THE PLAYERS when she was eight years old, helping with the practice range, bagging golf balls and running errands. She was encouraged to do so by her father Paul Fangman, a longtime volunteer who is currently the chair of the Spectator Information Committee.

“I didn’t really have a choice,” said Madison jokingly. “Looking back now, it really has become something that I love, a bonding thing for my dad and I and something that I truly cherish.”

Paul began volunteering in 1991 after a co-worker invited him to help on the Supply Committee. The following year, Paul became the assistant chair of the Supply Committee. He has also worked

on the Offsite Shuttle Committee and on the Scoring Committee before leading the Spectator Information Committee for the past 16 years.

Together the father/daughter duo has 48 years of experience volunteering at THE PLAYERS. In addition, other family members have volunteered over the years, bringing the total to 75 years of experience including his wife, older daughter and mother-in-law.

Now 23 years old, Madison is the assistant chair of the Standard Bearers and is in her 16th year of volunteering.

Madison was a standard bearer for five years, so she understands the role well. Volunteers for this position are aged 13 – 18, and there are usually 50 – 60 students working in assigned groups of three. For each group of three golfers, one student is assigned to walk with them for that round of golf and update their scores on their standard (the sign).

“As they play the round, our standard bearer will update their scores as soon as it changes for enhanced spectated viewing,” said Madison. “Essentially, each standard bearer’s role is score tracking for the spectators. They walk inside of the ropes with the golfers, hold the standard so spectators can see and act in a professional manner to add to the tournament’s rapport.”

The Fangman family has a total of 75 years of volunteer experience at THE PLAYERS.

Madison has been the assistant chair since 2018 and has found no shortage of students who wish to volunteer.

Many of the volunteers return each year, which has created some great friendships and the opportunity for Madison to watch many of the students mature. And even though Madison now lives in Texas working as a wellness specialist, she will return to volunteer at THE PLAYERS this year and for as long as she is able.

“The volunteers on our committee are there because they want to be; so, for me, it is fulfilling to watch young adults volunteer for something they are passionate about,” said Madison.

Paul said his committee focuses on helping spectators and fans with any needs they have whether it be course maps, directions or checking on Spectator Information Tents.

He currently has 20 volunteers.

“Often, I call myself a ‘gofer’ once the tournament starts. When I’m in my golf cart, I am focused on committee needs,” said Paul, adding that his favorite part of THE PLAYERS is the fan interaction and the friendships he has built over the years.

“THE PLAYERS is a family concept,” said Paul. “Plus, it is great knowing that the backdrop to all of this is The TOUR raising millions for local charities.”
