he basement of the Cliftondale Congregational Church at 50 Essex St., will be just like a racetrack tomorrow morning as Saugus Cub Scout Pack 62 holds its Annual Pinewood Derby. Miniature wood cars made by the hands of kids, sometimes with the help of their parents, will be competing for prizes for the fastest and the best-looking. “It’s been going for at least 35 years,” Saugus Boy Scout Troop 62 Scoutmaster John Kane said. The Pinewood Derby will get underway at 10 a.m. with “an open race” for parents and siblings of the Cub Scouts, according to Kane. “Once that is done and the winners determined, we will start the cubbies races 11 a.m.,” Kane said.

own Manager Scott C. Crabtree says it’s been years since the town had a truancy officer to check on students who belong in school. This year he wants the town to hire a truancy officer who will also make sure that students from out-of-town aren’t hiding out in the classrooms of Saugus Public Schools. “If there are 100 students who don’t belong, it’s $1.5 million in taxpayers’ money,” Crabtree told the Board of Selectmen Wednesday night as he presented his preliminary $98.9 million budget for the 2019 fiscal year that begins July 1. He based that estimate on an average cost of $15,480 per student Selectmen voted unanimously to accept the town manager’s recommended spending plan, which will be reviewed by the Finance Committee during a series of meetings this month and next month before the Annual Town Meeting votes on the budget in May. presented to the Board of Selectmen on Feb. 15, Crabtree included $40,000 for a truancy officer within the budgeted salaries for the Town Manager’s Office. The amount really belongs in the School Department budget request. But Crabtree said he included it within his own office “as a placeholder.” The town manager said he feels “strongly” about adding the position to the town payroll after conversations with Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr. “I think it’s something that’s needed to help assist the schools,”Crabtree noted, adding that he wants to make sure that all the students attending classes in the town’s education system “belong.” With a new Middle-High School set to open in a couple of years, the attraction for unauthorized students could be greater and add an unnecessary financial burden to the town, Crabtree said. “A lot of people are asking the question, ‘Are people who don’t
