So, it’s Kane’s of Saugus vs. Dottie’s of Philly in this year’s great Super Bowl Donuts War: the outcome to be determined by Sunday night’s (6:30 p.m.) showdown in Minneapolis between the AFC Champion Patriots and the NFC Champion Eagles.

“They called us because they know we have a bet going on with Dottie’s Donuts,” Kane’s coowner Peter Delios, Jr. said in an interview this week, referring to the phone call his brother Paul received on Tuesday from Today.

“If the Pats win, they’ll [Dottie’s] send us a dozen of their donuts. If they win, then we’ll send them a dozen of our Boston Cream donuts. That’s the main part of the bet,” Peter, Jr. told The Advocate.

“Also part of the wager: If the Pats win, the people in Philadelphia have to wear Patriots jerseys. And if the Eagles win, we’ll have to wear Philadelphia jerseys – which I won’t be doing because it’s just not happening,” he said.

Although NBC didn’t specifically request it, there’s another part of the Kane’s Donuts package that Paul Delios is escorting down to New York City. “We’ll be dropping off some Go Pats! donuts, too,” Peter, Jr. said in an interview this week. “We make them every year during the football season – and keep making them in the playoffs as long as they win. They’re pretty popular among our customers,” he said.

The public’s right to know School Committee violates Open Meeting Law; state AG’s office concludes; Committee this week deviates from posted agenda

L

ess than a week after the state Attorney General’s Office cited the Saugus School Committee for violating the state Open Meeting law, the committee deviated from a posted agenda before going into an executive session on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was supposed to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 in the School Committee Room, according to the agenda on the bulletin board at Town Hall.

Committee members would meet in Open Session and “Move into Executive Session to discuss non-union-unit contract negotiations and to reconvene in Open Session.”

But a Saugus Advocate reporter who showed up in the School Committee room at 3:18 p.m. didn’t get the chance to observe the committee vote to go into Executive Session. And there was no sign on the door of the School Committee Room or inside to inform the public that the meeting had been moved to another location. It was not until about 4:53 p.m. that five members of the School Committee emerged from a back hall that leads directly into the Superintendent’s Office.

The School Committee then took a 5-0 vote to approve the School Department budget for the 2019 fiscal year that begins July 1. It took just about two minutes for the committee to stand and face the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and vote to approve the $29,359,421 budget recommended by the superintendent. It took one minute and 12 seconds.

Did the School Committee begin the meeting earlier than posted before going into Executive Session? No, members began on time, according to School Committee Member Marc Magliozzi.

Then, did the Open Session begin in the Superintendent’s Office? Magliozzi declined to answer the question, explaining concern about“being painted in a bad light” by The Saugus Advocate. He insisted the meeting began on time, opened in a public session and then went into Executive Session.

When asked again where the meeting started, Magliozzi answered at the School Administration Building, declining to say which room.

It appears the public was denied the opportunity to be present at the start of the meeting and hear what was discussed

at the open session part of the meeting.

This series of events comes on the heels of a decision by the state Attorney General’s Division of Open Government that the School Committee violated the Open Meeting Law for keeping inadequate minutes of a March 16, 2017 executive session – allegations in a complaint filed last year by School Committee Member Peter Manoogian. (See related story.)“The complaint alleges that the March 16, 2017 executive session minutes lack sufficient detail. We agree,” wrote state Assistant Attorney General Kevin W. Manganaro of the Division of Open Government.

“The minutes list the topics that were discussed – teaching time, insurance, etc. – but they do not provide a substantive summary of the Committee’s conversations on these topics. This lack of detail violated the Open Meeting Law,” Manganaro wrote in a three-page letter dated Jan. 24.

The state Attorney General’s Office ordered the School Committee “to amend the March 16, 2017 executive session minutes to include the missing detail” within 30 days of the letter. “We order the Committee’s immediate and future compliance with the Open Meeting Law, and we caution that similar future violations may be considered evidence of intent to violate the law,” Manganaro warned.

The letter also acknowledged a statement from the School Committee’s legal counsel “in response to the complaint that

Guarino talks about the challenges & rewards of belonging to an elementary school PTO Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down with Stacey Guarino, vice president of the Veterans Memorial Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), to talk about how parents of children in Saugus Public Schools can get more active in their child’s education while helping to improve their town’s education system at the elementary and middle schools. Guarino, a Winthrop native and a 1989 graduate of Winthrop High School, moved to Saugus 15 years ago with her husband, A.J., a native of Boston’s North End and a long-time court officer at the Massachusetts Appeals Court in Boston. They have two sons: Joey, 10, a fifth-grader at the Veterans Memorial Elementary School; and Frankie, 12, a seventh-grader at the Belmonte Middle School. Stacey Guarino is a substitute cafeteria worker for Saugus Public Schools and has worked for 20 years as a nail technician at Skin for all Seasons Salon & Spa in Revere. She began volunteering in 2010 for the Veterans School PTO as a room mother in kindergarten and has advanced to a leadership position in recent years. Her days as a parent advocate at the Veterans will end in June at her son Joey’s “Moving On” Ceremony. He will join his

brother next year at the Belmonte Middle School. Stacey is one of three of the PTO’s top leaders who will be moving on to the Belmonte School with their children. The Vets PTO President Lisa Frost and Secretary Jean Bloom are also in their final year advocating for children at the school. Some highlights of the interview follow.

Q: Stacey, how did you get involved with the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)?

A: I started when my children first entered the Vets. I wanted to get involved. First, when it started off, I wanted to stalk them. I wanted to be in the classroom where they were. I wanted to check on them, because it was the first time they were really away from me. And I figured if I could get in there to see them and to see if they were okay, then I would be okay. I would

go in and I would do crafts with them, and then I was the room mother. And then after a while, I started to realize, like, I really enjoyed this; this is fun stuff and the kids loved it.

Q: Were you recruited? Or was this something you inquired about?

A: I inquired about it. When you first enter the school at the beginning of the school, all the notices come in, like the “Back To School Night.” The PTO runs it, and they start talking about “Join The PTO … come to one of our meetings. See what we’re about.” My mother ran the PTO when I was in school. So, for me, I just thought it was natural to have your mother in the room.

Q: How many years was your mother with the PTO? A: Oh, my mother, she was

ASKS | from page 4 there forever! She was in there from the time I was in kindergarten until the time I graduated eighth grade. She was at my eighth grade dance. And then she stepped down once I left eighth grade. It was almost a little bit embarrassing at that age.

But she was there all of the time.

She was in the library. It was what she did, what she enjoyed.

She didn’t work, so she came to the school and she helped out with lunches, crafts and library mom. And I want to do the same thing for my kids because I like seeing [them] there.

Q: In the PTO you’re in, how many active parents are in it?

A: Well, we have the board.

The board is made up of one president, two co-vice presidents, two co-secretaries and one treasurer. And then we have parents that do come to the meetings. There aren’t too many of them. Our meetings could vary between five and 15 people, depending upon what we have going on.

Q: So maybe you have eight to 10 active members?

A: Yeah. There are not too many. We have 550 students in the Vets.

Q: So, theoretically, you could have ….

A: Half of that.

Q: Half that as parents [members]?

A: Yes. We do a PTO meeting every single month. We alternate. One month, we do it at 6 p.m.; the next month, we do it at 9 a.m.; so we accommodate the people who work and then we accommodate the people who stay home.

Q: What’s the most people you had show up at a PTO meeting?

A: We had – when Dr. [David] DeRuosi started talking about the new school, and the parents wanted to get the information before we voted for it – we had 20 [people]. It would be nice to see more parents come to the meetings and see what we’re about, see what we do and to get involved. I mean, it’s rewarding, it’s fun.

Q: How many hours a week does this take of your time?

A: It can vary. One week, if we have school shopping, I have a very flexible schedule and I can make it a point to be at the school every single day if I need to. And then we have weeks when you don’t have to be inside the school. You can do this while working 40 hours a week.

And you can do this if you don’t work at all. It’s not something that you have to be there every single day. Our president, Lisa Frost, she runs the library. She is there Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, every other week, running the library. She spends a lot of time in the school. She spends a lot of her free time in the school. It’s amazing.

Q: Running a library is strictly volunteer?

A: Yes, strictly volunteer. Lisa Frost, she is amazing. If it wasn’t for her, that library wouldn’t be open.

Q: Wow. How many years has she been doing that?

A: This is her second year as the president. The year before that she was a secretary, and before that, she was a PTO mom.

She came to the meetings. She was a room mom. She would help out. She stepped up last year when the president had left because her daughter had moved on. And, it’s been incredible. I have been very grateful for her, because if it wasn’t for her and the time she puts in, we wouldn’t have half of the things for the kids.

Q: What do you consider the main role for the PTO? A: We fundraise for the school.

We do a lot of fundraising. The fundraising helps to pay for buses, for field trips. We also run any special events. We have ice cream rewards, where at the end of each term, for the students who reached their scholastic goal, we have an ice cream party for them run by us. We plan pretty much every event for the school. We plan the field days at the end of the year as well.

Q: How much money did you raise last year?

A: It depends. We raised money and then we put it back into students, so it kind of goes back and forth. I’m not the treasurer, so I don’t know the exact amount. Last year, we had Penny Wars and we raised over $3,000, and we put it right back into the school. It was awesome. We try to plan fundraisers where the kids can participate and have fun. And it didn’t cost us anything to put out. But they had a blast. That was one of the big ones.

Q: What would you consider the major role you play? The PTO? A: We run the library. The library wouldn’t be open with-

out PTO volunteers. We run all of their book fairs. Our role is to fundraise and to plan the events. If we weren’t there, the kids wouldn’t have that and have a Field Day that the PTO had planned.

Q: So, the big deal is the library?

A: Right. Because they don’t have a paid librarian. Lisa goes in and she runs that library pretty much by herself. There are days that she sits in that library from 8:30 [a.m.] to 2:40 [p.m.]. And she doesn’t move.

Q: So, essentially, the PTO is filling the gaps?

A: Yes. We help each other out.

It’s pretty good. We have a great system.

Q: And you hook up with some of the other PTOs? A: Yes. We do hook up with some of the PTOs. Last year, we took a tour of the Winthrop Middle/High School. All of us went: members of the PTOS from Saugus. We all got to meet each other. We get information from the other PTOs – What did you do for this, or How did you do this … or What did you do for a fundraiser?

And I work closely with the Belmonte PTO, and I get ideas from them, and they get ideas from me. It’s pretty good.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge, as either a PTO leader or a PTO member?

A: Well, we work. We all work, and sometimes the biggest challenge is trying to balance your work and your home life with your PTO. If you see my calendar – it’s almost like work, history rewards, work, fundraiser, library coverage – it’s a balancing challenge, to make sure everything is covered and the kids have everything they need. And sometimes we are a little bit late with things – or sometimes when we’re going to run a fundraiser a certain time and we’re late because we get a little negative feedback from people. And that’s tough to hear that. We’re

do the best we can. As long as the kids are getting what they need, we’re happy.

Q: Now, you folks played a working on a volunteer basis: We volunteer our time and we crucial role in getting the vote

out on the new [Middle-High] school. You were pretty active, right?

A: We were active, yes. We got the word out. We had PTO meetings. We would schedule special meetings to have people come in and listen to the superintendent [Dr. David DeRuosi] and his ideas. I did a lot of posting on Facebook on the Veterans [Memorial Elementary] School PTO page, so anytime that there was a meeting, even if it wasn’t in our school, I always shared it – get the news out for these people from Day One. So, as far as sharing, if I see something on the Belmonte Middle School, I’ll pull it

and I’ll share it on mine [webpage]. We had the stickers on our cars. We want new schools, so we worked hard to get the word out on why it would be beneficial.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being a PTO leader or PTO member?

A: The kids: when they come up to me and say “Thank you so much,” or when last year we did Field Day, and Lisa had these big blow-up obstacle courses. We’ve never done this before – these kids were coming up and saying “This is the best Field Day ever.”

These kids were so excited, it made us feel good. Like wow, we

did this. We made them feel like this was the best day ever, and that’s what it’s about; like when they’re excited about something and they’re happy – like on Ice Cream Day when they’re dancing around. It’s for the kids; that’s why we do it.

Q: Do you get a lot of good feedback? Do you feel the town and the other parents appreciate what you do?

A: Yes. We get a lot of good feedback. We get a lot of parents thanking us for what we do. And for everything we do for the kids, we get a lot of support from the school. I just wish a lot of people would step in and see what we do and come to our meetings and be part of it. We’re always looking for volunteers. Always. We’ll never turn away a volunteer. We will never say to you “We’re full.” We could use more help.

Q: What would you say to try to recruit some people to volunteer? What would you say to them?

A: Oh, I do it all of the time, all over Facebook. I’m always posting “Volunteers Wanted.” I try to put a cute little saying or cute little picture.

Q: To be an effective member of the PTO, how much time are you talking about here?

A: It’s not a lot of time. Once a month we have meetings. It’s one hour a month. We alternate: One month it’s 6 p.m.; one month it’s 9 a.m.; we’re there for an hour. Give us some input. We like new ideas. If you don’t like the fact we did this last year, give us some new ideas. We’ll change it up. We like to see new faces. I do a lot of recruiting for volunteers for Halloween parties and all of the dances and stuff. We pull them in, but a lot of times, I feel that we could pull in more, because I know there are a lot of people who drop their kids off, and they’ll stand outside.

We’ll if they volunteered, they could come in. Why stand outside for two hours at the dance?

Come on in!

Q: So what would you tell them? What’s the best part of being on a PTO? A: It’s your kids seeing you.

Your kids love to see you. The kids love seeing their parents.

There are some kids that don’t want their parents there, and I get it. But there are other kids who say “I wish my mom were here” or “I wish my mom would come and do the things that you do.” So I just wish people would come in more. It’s rewarding to see the kids. It really is.

Right now, it’s the same people who come to the meetings.

It’s the same people who volunteer. It’s the same people all of the time. I get out there and advertise the meetings like crazy. I just think there’s got to be more people who could be a

From firefighter to “frontline supervisor” Veteran Saugus firefighter William E. Cross III advances into top supervisory position

A

fter nearly 24 years as a Saugus firefighter, William E. Cross III received a promotion to Acting Lieutenant this week. “It couldn’t happen to a better guy, and it definitely is the right time in his career, and he has the right amount of experience in firefighting to be a frontline supervisor,” Fire Chief Newbury said Wednesday as Cross was sworn in during a ceremony at Town Hall before family, friends and colleagues.

“He is ready and he is prepared, and I think the department will be better for it,” Chief Newbury said.

Cross’s father, William E. Cross, Jr. – a retired Chelsea Fire Department captain who served with that city’s fire service for 35 years – pinned his son with the badge of his new rank during the ceremony.

“I am proud to appoint Lieutenant Cross and I wish him the best of luck in this new and challenging role,” Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree said in a statement released by the town manager’s office. “I have no doubt that he will continue to be an enormous asset to our Public Safety Department and to the residents of Saugus,” Crabtree said.

Lieutenant Cross is a 2008 recipient of the Medal of Valor for his rescue of a double amputee while he was off-duty, according to the manager’s statement.

“I am thrilled to be serving as a fire lieutenant in Saugus, and I think I have the greatest job in the world … When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life, and that’s how I feel,” Cross said.

Another generation of Cross firefighters? Cross, 50, has been married to his wife, Tracy, for nearly 24 years. They have three sons: Andrew, 22; Patrick, 20; and Joseph, 17.

As for Kane’s, Super Bowl wagers began with franchise’s second appearance in the NFL title game back in January 1997. “I had a bet with a local customer who comes in and has allegiance to the Green Bay Packers,” Peter, Jr. recalled.

“If the Patriots had won, I was going to make him wear a Minuteman hat. If they won, I had to

wear a ‘cheesehead’ while I was waiting on customers,” he said.

“It was rough. It certainly was,” he said of the Packers’ 35-21 victory over the Patriots. So were the two Super Bowl losses that followed to the New York Giants – 17-14 in February 2008 and 21-17 in February 2002 – both wins come-from-behind thrillers that the underdog Giants pulled out in the closing minutes of the games.

Manoogian’s reaction to state AG’s office confirming his complaint on Open Meeting Law violation Editor’s note: Former School Committee Member Peter Manoogian responded to several questions by The Saugus Advocate after the state Attorney General’s Office’s Division of Open Government agreed with a complaint filed by Manoogian last year that the committee violated the state Open Meeting Law with minutes of a March 16, 2017 executive session lacking “sufficient detail.”

Q: What’s the significance of the Attorney General Opinion on your Open Meeting Law complaint?

Manoogian: The significance is that there is now an indisputable standard established for what minutes should include and when they should be approved and filed. Prior to this ruling the committee was relying upon a policy that left it up to a majority vote as to what should or should not be included in meeting minutes. This decision reinforces the need for the Saugus School Committee to approve accurate meeting minutes in a timely manner rather than wait until the end or near the end of a two year term of office to approve/accept executive session minutes, a practice that has existed for far too long.

It should now be clear that the public has a right to know what took place, when it took place, what the nature of the meeting or discussion was, and what documents were used or relied upon whether it be executive

Q: Are you satisfied with the results, or do you wish it would have gone further?

Manoogian: The ruling actually did go further by requiring that the minutes be rewritten. The ruling also made it very clear that any future violations would be considered “willful.”

I did request that training be mandated for the school committee, something that was not required in the ruling, yet something I hope the committee and other town boards would avail themselves of.

Q: It’s rare that a member of a public body would file a complaint against fellow members.

You must have taken some heat.

Also, considering that the law provides some negotiations before it gets to the point of the AG making a decision, It appears that the committee either wasn’t interested in resolving the matter locally, or they didn’t care about it enough? Any thoughts about that which you would like to share?

Manoogian: Actually, according to the staff attorneys at the AG’s office I spoke with, it is not all that rare for an elected or appointed official to file a complaint. What is rare is the unwillingness of a board to resolve matters internally rather than spend thousands of dollars on attorney fees to fight a very reasonable request. The committee chose to deal with this matter behind closed doors rather than to engage in developing a solu-

tion. The time, effort, and money spent on attorney’s fees defending such practices is time, effort, and money that is not used to address the fact that Saugus has fallen to a Level 3 School District, among the lowest 20% in the Commonwealth. What is extraordinarily rare is that Saugus lacks a plan to raise student achievement and the reluctance of policy makers to advocate for the resources to do so.

Q: So, what was the importance of the School Committee providing detailed information about the March 16, 2017 meeting? Why does it matter, which gets to the heart of why you filed the complaint in the first place?

Manoogian: It matters because it is during these executive sessions that the committee is advised what the options and consequences are of collective bargaining parameters and expectations. The commitment of resources and unsustainable funds have resulted in program curtailment, larger class sizes, fees, and charges for early education, busing, and extracurricular participation. Whether you agree with the action of the committee is not as important as the public having the opportunity to understand the reasoning that was put forth by all members.

There will be a constant tension between balancing the need to compensate staff and maintaining a quality educational program now, particularly when the committee and su-

perintendent are either coerced or reluctant to advocate for adequate funding to do both. The opportunity to understand that process and those discussions is effectively denied when minutes are withheld and their content is censored.

Q: Initially, you filed two complaints. What happened with the first one?

The first one had to do with the refusal of the majority of the committee to include my reasons for voting against the $25,000 salary increase for the business manager in the minutes from that meeting. I find it ironic that the same members of the committee who advocated for a $25,000 raise for one individual behind closed doors are now taking a hard line on a $40,000 line item for some three dozen or so nonunion individuals. The ruling on this one decision clearly indicates that that discussion and content should have been included. Essentially, the ruling addresses both points.

Q: Do you plan on filing any additional complaints related to Open Meeting Law matters as they pertain to the School Committee or any other public body in Saugus? You mentioned your concerns about certain information being absent from the minutes of other meetings.

Manoogian: There were several meeting held in Executive Session to deliberate over a 2014 lawsuit filed by a former athletic clerk, Joanne Castellarin, a lawsuit that was well publicized in

the local press. This lawsuit took place with the previous School Committee yet was resolved with this committee after several meetings that took place in Executive Session. There were never any minutes presented to the committee for approval. I had pointed this out a number of times without having the issue acknowledged.

Because I am no longer on the committee, I would leave it up to another member of the public to request to view those minutes, and when they are not produced, that member would have 30 days to file a complaint with the committee. This is the advice I was given by the AG’s office.

Q: Are you satisfied that the School Committee will take the Open Meeting Law more seriously after the ruling by the Attorney General’s Office? Or do you have doubts that they care about it?

Manoogian: I believe they will take it more seriously as the AG has put them on notice that any future violations would be considered “willful violations” that would result in fines. This isn’t about what the committee chooses to take seriously. It’s about what the public is willing to accept both in process and outcome for the Saugus Public Schools.

Ultimately the quality of processes and outcomes for the Saugus Public Schools can only benefit when there is informed public involvement.

A Coller comeback?

Coller expresses interest in state Rep. Donald Wong’s Ninth Essex House District seat

That’s how former Saugus Selectman candidate Michael A. Coller began a brief press release he circulated this week, putting his name out as a possible Republican challenger to four-term incumbent state Rep. Donald Wong (R-Saugus) in this fall’s race for the Massachusetts House’s Ninth Essex District seat.

Attached to the press release was a photo of Coller at the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office after apparently making a recent trip to the secretary’s Elections Division in Boston.

Coller, an unsuccessful candidate for Selectman last fall, suggested he is giving serious con-

sideration to a run for the state House seat: “He will be meeting shortly with advisors to discuss the potential commitment, resources and possible strategies for a valiant campaign! Not a formal announcement but his intent is clear!”

Coller is a 1985 Saugus High School graduate and received a Bachelor of Science in Management degree from Bridgewater State College in 1990. Coller promoted himself as being “born, raised, educated in Saugus, Security Professional, Best Selling Author and Freelance Journalist” when he announced his candidacy for selectman last June. He finished a distant eighth among the nine candidates running for the five selectmen seats, which were won by the incumbents.

Precincts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 in Saugus make up the core of the district, which also includes parts of Lynn and Wakefield.

Two years ago, district voters reelected Wong over Democratic challenger Jen Migliore by a lopsided 6,451 to 4,790-margin. Wong won all eight Saugus precincts and each of the four precincts in Wakefield. Migliore avoided a total shutout by beating Wong in Precincts 1 and 2 in Lynn’s Ward 1. Overall, Wong won reelection handily – by 2,315 votes or a 55 percent margin (12,766 to 10,451).

Board of Selectmen Chairman Debra C. Panetta’s name has been rumored to be a possible Democratic challenger.

But she has not expressed an interest in the seat, at least not publicly. Panetta was a candidate for the state House seat in 2004, losing in the Democratic Primary to then-state Rep. Mark V. Saugus goalie’s defensive masterpiece leads to 0-0 draw with Medford

S

augus and Medford ended Wednesday’s match the same way they started it, in a 0-0 tie at Kasabuski Rink. However, only one team felt like a winner on that day. Thanks to goalie Nick Sanderson turning in his best performance of the season with 37 saves, the Sachems (5-6-4) came away with another point and are now six points away from a tournament berth.

“Nick was great out there tonight, and that’s the kind of game we needed out of him,” said Saugus coach Jeff Natalucci.

“We really needed to get some points out of this one; it’s getting down to crunch time, so it was good to get the point – great ef-

fort all around by our guys.”

Sanderson took on the wrath of the Mustangs, who outshot the Sachems, 37-9. The senior said the most stressful moment in the game for him was when his team was on the short end of a three-on-five power play. “I was in a different state of mind,” Sanderson said. “It’s just nuts.”

Medford came out of the gate with eight shots on goal in the first period. Even with a power play, the Mustangs could not faze Sanderson. The Mustangs turned up the heat in the second period with four more shots than the first period, including another power play, but it wasn’t until a 17-shot third period that Medford threw everything, including the kitchen sink,

10 points and all they need now ett Arena on Saturday to take on at Sanderson but to no avail.

“Our effort was there all night; is six. Saugus will travel to Rock- Marblehead.

I loved the effort I saw,”Natalucci said. “Our execution was off, and it needs to be better if we want to get two points out of games like this instead of one.”

At this point for Saugus, any night that doesn’t end in a loss will feel like a win. With five games remaining in the regular season, Saugus must find a way to win against quality opponents like Danvers, Swampscott and Winthrop.

“Every game is important now; there’s no getting around that,” Natalucci said. “It’s about executing out there now, but if we bring the effort that we brought tonight, I like our chances.”

Sachem boys’ basketball team needs maximum effort

he Saugus boys’ basketball team struggled with playing back-to-back games this week as they fell to Medford and Revere on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Coach Mark Bertrand lamented his team’s effort in the Revere game – which ended 6940 – but acknowledged the schedule’s difficulty. “It’s tough on teams, especially in our conference, to play two nights in a row, so we didn’t light up on them, but I told them we weren’t happy with the effort,” Bertrand said. “Just a lot of turnovers and silly plays on our part – I don’t think the score reflected our talent.”

Things were decidedly better against Medford, even though that game ended 49-35. Mike Mabee led Sachems scoring with 17 points; Mason Nickolas chipped in 11.

Saugus are currently 2-11 and have a tough schedule for their remaining games, but could still sneak into the post-season via the Sullivan rule. For Bertrand, the tough schedule isn’t a valid excuse for the team not putting forth its best performance.

“It’s the NEC; we’re competing with schools that have 1,600 kids and very successful programs, so it is tough, but we can’t make excuses,” Bertrand said. “We are all about day-to-day improvements.”

he Saugus girls’ basketball team lost to Triton on Monday, which turned out to be the fuel they needed to oust Medford on Tuesday. Saugus “played angry,”per coach Mark Schruender, and avenged their loss from the night before with a 52-36 victory over the Mustangs. “It was a win we needed,” Schruen-

der said. “Sometimes the right response to a loss is to come out the next night, play hard and get a brand new result.”

In beating Medford, the Sachems went through the entire second quarter without giving up a single point. It was the first quarter-long shutout of Schruender’s career. “First time that’s ever happened to us while I’ve been here,” Schruender said.

Taylor Bogdanski had 15 points, nine of which were threepointers. Alessia Salzillo had 13 and Rachel Nazzaro had 10.

“This team really is amazing the way their mental game works,” said Schruender. “They can take anything negative and make it positive … Earlier this week we were reviewing film and I was pointing out some mistakes and things they

shouldn’t do. One of my players just said, ‘Coach, these things are all so easy to fix.’ … Stuff like that is what I’m talking about.

They’re focused on practicing and improving and working together as a team. There’s no finger-pointing to one another or the coaches.”

That mentality, according to Schruender, will be invaluable once playoff time comes

around. For now, the Sachems are on the outside looking in, as they’re 7-6 and need a few more wins to clinch a state tournament berth.

“We have Somerville at home next,” said Schruender. “We’re just going day by day and trying to get better. They beat Beverly earlier this season and Beverly beat us, so we know Somerville will be a tough one.”

Martucci hopeful Saugus girls’ hockey team can clinch tourney berth

ome wayward penalty calls threw the Saugus girls’ hockey team off their game on Wednesday night in a 4-2 loss to

Beverly. The Sachems, who led at two points in the game, are now 8-4-1 as a result of the loss.

“I think the officials took control a bit, which didn’t help us,” said coach Anthony Martucci.

Ashley Miles and Sophia Kennedy netted goals for the Sachems. Beverly scored their fourth goal on an empty net after Martucci pulled the goalie in an effort to equalize.

With five games left in the season, the Sachems need just one point to clinch a state tournament berth.

“Beverly’s a good team, but it was a winnable game and

we thought we could get two points with a win,” Martucci said. “This one hurts, but we’re on to the next one.” The Saugus Sachems travel to Medford on Wednesday for their next game.

Senior grapplers leading youthful Sachems by example

A

ny team, no matter the sport, is playing with house money if it has a young roster. Any victory becomes precious and shows a far brighter future in the horizon.

In the case of the Saugus High School wrestling team, despite its youth and injury issues, the Sachems have won dual meets against Gloucester, Tyngsboro, Essex Tech, Malden, Randolph and, most recently, Peabody. Senior captain Daniel McCullough leads a team full of first-time wrestlers while preparing for one more run at the state tournament.

McCullough spent much of the year in the wrestling room working to improve for the upcoming postseason tournaments. He wasn’t just improving himself but also improving the team this year and the program for the future by coaching the youth program with fellow senior captain Joe Alba in an effort to share their skills.

McCullough and Alba said that coaching the youth program brings the most gratifying feeling when it comes to a practice setting.

“You show them a move and they don’t get it at first,

and you then work on it with them and they figure it out,” McCullough said. “It is such a great feeling,” “The best is when after the practices we’ll have the kids’ parents come up to thank us,” Alba said.

McCullough and Alba’s experience hasn’t just helped the young wrestlers, said fellow senior Steve Pettenati, who is hovering around .500 during his first year in the sport.

McCullough went 20-7 and qualified for states last year, along with junior captain Dominic Clark, and has followed up that season with a 22-7 record this year, which is a personal career record for him. McCullough said he improved on his stand-up game from the neutral position. It has led to some pretty quick pins. In his most recent match against Peabody’s Cam Cuzzi, McCullough only needed a single takedown to seal the win with a pin, highlighting a 4522 win over the Tanners.

Alba, who matched McCullough’s junior record at 20 wins, is currently nursing a shoulder injury. However, he is confident that he will be ready in time for sectionals to join his comrade in the quest for states.

Another one of our biggest accomplishments as a PTO is the “Back to School Night”; this is held at the beginning of each school year. The parents are invited to come in and see where their child’s classroom is and listen to what the teacher plans during a typical school day. It also gives us an opportunity to introduce ourselves and recruit volunteers for the future events that are happening during the school year. We have many parents who volunteer on this night, once they hear the speech from the PTO president as to what the PTO is and what we are involved in. We also hold raffles as fundraisers to kick off the new school year. It’s very profitable, and the entire PTO board takes part in it. It also gives parents a chance to speak one on one with a board member regarding joining the PTO. Q: Again, without your efforts, is it true the school would not have a “Moving On” ceremony?

wouldn’t have Halloween parties or end-of-the-year dances for the fifth grade, because we run that as well. We purchase yearbooks for the fifth grade students. We do the ice cream social. We do a book fair for the kids. We do a lot. Elementary School PTO is very involved. We do quite a bit.

Q: You’re sort of unsung heroes. Is that a fair way of describing everybody involved with it?

A: I don’t know about that.

Q: The school administration loves you. Right?

A: Yes, the school administration loves us. Yes. We have a very good relationship with them.

And they thank us every single day. They’re very, very thankful and they’re very appreciative, and they’re awesome. I couldn’t ask for a better staff than what we have at that school.

Q: Anything else that you would like to share about the challenges and the satisfaction of being a PTO leader?

A: This is a little different for us, because this is our last year at the Vets. We leave in June.

Lisa and I, and another member, Jean Bloom. She is the secretary. The three of us are leaving.

We all have fifth grade students who will be moving on to the [Belmonte] Middle School. As we complete all of these events, we realize it’s our last one. It’s kind of sad.

Q: Are you confident that when you move on, you’ll have others left to pick up the slack?

A: Yes. We did bring in a couple of new people at the beginning of the year. We have a special election in May to bring in a few more. We’re grooming the people we have on the board now – the two new members – so we’re hoping that in May we’ll bring in some new board members so that once we leave, we’ve got them covered, and then we’ll be able to leave after the “Moving On” ceremony.

Q: Do you plan on being as active with the Belmonte PTO? A: I don’t know that I’ll be as active. Once they get up to middle school, there’s not a lot of parent involvement. They do fundraising, which I am a part of now. I have a fundraising committee for the sixth and seventh grades.

Q: So in addition to being a member of the Veterans PTO, you already are a member of the

“My father never pushed me to do this, but this gets in your blood. And I love it,” Cross said in an interview yesterday.

“I’m not going to put any pressure on him [Patrick] to make that decision. Whether he wants to be a plumber, a finance whiz on Wall Street, a firefighter or whatever a son of mine wants

to do – I just want him to do what makes him happy, that’s all,” he said.

Cross said his promotion is provisional until his grades are certified by the state.

He said he plans to continue in his position as president of the local firefighters union “as long as they keep electing me” and I’m now in my 19th year as president.”

Belmonte PTO. A: Yes. I help with fundraising over at that school [Belmonte]. I haven’t decided if I’m going to see if I will go on the board, because it’s not as involved as it is for elementary school. Like, they don’t do the ice cream reward.

Even the field days are run by the teachers. It’s not very PTOinvolved, so it’s something that anybody can do. I mean, the people who run the PTO right now at the Belmonte have fulltime jobs and they’re running it smoothly, so it’s something that can be done. So I’m thinking about it. They’re slowly pulling me up there.

Q: You said your mom was on the PTO right through high school?

A: Right up until eighth grade, because there is no PTO in high school.

Q: And she continued years later?

A: She did put in time for my little sisters, but not as much as she did for me. I was the first one, so she was very active. She was library mother and she was a room mom and she was lunch mother. She was just always there for me, from beginning till end. Every time I turned around, she was in my school.

Q: Do you have any thoughts you would like to share, like, “Do the PTO like the directions the schools are going in?” Any concerns that you as a PTO leader would want to voice?

A: Not too many concerns. I would like to see more people volunteer. That is a major concern with me, because it’s volunteer time. You don’t have to be there if you don’t want to, like with a paid position. All of us are volunteers. We don’t get paid and go in on our days off.

We go in if we have a half a day.

I rearrange my schedule with my boss and let him know I can’t work certain days, according to what we have scheduled for the PTO. I make it so that I can be at both places. I’ve even passed up certain positions in the kitchen because of my commitment at the Vets. I think the PTO could be bigger; I think it could be more members, but I think we have done pretty good for the last couple of years with Lisa running it. She really has done a fabulous job. She was a secretary and she went right up to president and that’s awesome.

Cross considers the highlight of his firefighting career the medal he received as part of a group that rescued a woman with a disability from a second floor fire. “That was part of a team effort. I am lucky to have worked with some of the greatest officers who ever worked in this place [Saugus Fire Department], and I love what I do,” Cross said.

Creem also said that just because these laws are not currently enforced does not mean they could not be enforced in the future. She noted that there is discussion in Congress about an attempt to reverse the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide.

Senate seat vacant HOW LONG WAS LAST WEEK’S SESSION? Beacon Hill Roll Call tracks the length of time that the House and Senate were in session each week. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.

THE SOUNDS OF SAUGUS

H

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

Some citizen concerns Well, I stand corrected.

The School Committee probably doesn’t give a darn about transparency when it comes to explaining the School Department budget. The superintendent’s recommended spending plan for the 2019 fiscal year, which begins July 1, hasn’t yet been posted on the School Department website.

For those few citizens like Fae Saulenas, who really care.

I figured it would have been posted by now. More than a week has passed since school officials said it would.

It’s the public’s money. And they have a right to know what the proposed budget is for the town’s Public Education system.

And, in the ultimate affront to the public’s right to know, you have to take a look at the agenda posted for last Tuesday’s School Committee meeting.

Either the committee met much earlier than the 3:30 p.m. time they set for the meeting and then voted to go into Executive Session.

Or, maybe they just figured easier to open the meeting in the superintendent’s office and then vote to go into executive session.

In any event, I was there 12 minutes early and waited and waited before the School Committee finally enter the School Committee Meeting Room shortly before 5 p.m. And for all of that time, they used up a little over a minute to vote the budget.

Perhaps they believe it doesn’t matter what the agenda says.

They can change the plan.

I’ve covered government meetings for more than four decades in many communities in about 10 different states -- from small Town Meetings in Maine to the state Legislature in Albany, N.Y., Tallahassee, Fla. and Boston, Mass.

But I have never seen a local committee lack as much respect for its citizens and deviate from state Open Government Laws like the Saugus School Committee.

As an observer of the process, I consider it the responsibility of the local media or informed citizens to monitor meetings and certainly make sure public meeting follow the process.

I worked for several papers where editors handed out wallet-sized Open Government guidelines, including the reasons for which an Executive is called. And is the right for any citizen to raise questions publicly if he or she believes that a matter shouldn’t be discussed behind closed doors.

I feel myself and another reporter were denied that right at last Tuesday’s meeting.

Shame on the members and shame on the public for letting this situation continue.

One of these days an important vote is going to get jeopardized by not following the rules.

Some members of the committee thought former Committee member Peter Manoogian’s complaint was a joke when he filed it.

They had a chance to resolve it without it reaching the Attorney General’s office But the recent ruling confirms what Manoogian was saying along was correct -- at least in the eyes of Attorney General’s Office.

Stay tuned, for those who really care.

Saugus Republican Town Committee plans Convention Caucus for next month On Tuesday February 13th2018 the Saugus Republican Town Committee will hold a caucus to elect delegates to the Massachusetts Republican State Convention.The Caucus will begin at 7:30 P.M. at the Kowloon Restaurant, Route #1 North in Saugus.

Any registered Republican, as of, but no later than, December 31, 2017, residing in Saugus is eligible to be elected as a delegate to the convention by the members of the Saugus Republican Town Committee.

The Republican State Convention will take place on Saturday, April 28th2018 at the DCU Center in Worcester Massachusetts.

The annual membership in the Saugus Historical Society is renewable at this time.

Founded in 1928, the purpose of the Saugus Historical Society is to cultivate an interest in the history of the town and to collect and preserve all matter pertaining to the town’s history and citizenry. It is a 501c3 corporation which presents educational programs about local history. The popular Strawberry Festival is held each year on the third Saturday in June, and it publishes a calendar (available at Town Hall, the Library, and the Senior Center as well as a few other locations) with historic photographs of town sites and people.

The Saugus Historical Society holds regular meetings in March, April, May, September, October, and November. At each meeting there is a program related to local history. Meetings are usually held at 7 PM at 30 Main Street. Doors open at 6:45. The general public is welcome free of charge. Light refreshments are served.

Board members meet on the first Wednesday of each month. It is an all-volunteer organization. Any Saugus resident who would like to discuss the possibility of their joining the Historical Society board is welcome to call President Laura Eisener at 781-231-5988 or email ldeld@shore.net.

A week from today (Friday), Cheever hopes to be walking with Team USA in Pyeongchang County, South Korea during the opening ceremonies of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games.

“The focus will be on a gold medal,” Cheever’s agent, Sho Kashima, said in an interview this week of his best friend, who is already one of the best snowboarders in the world.

Snowboarding is not the fulltime profession for Cheevers, 32, who was officially named to the Olympic team about a year ago.

He grew up in Saugus, where his parents -- Mark Robert Cheever and Dorene M. Lewey -- still live while running Mark Cheever Plumbing.

“He actually graduated from Malden Catholic High School in ‘03,” Kashima said.

“Jonathan is also a licensed plumber. He’s able to support his Winter Olympic dreams by turning wrenches in the offseason, and obtaining industry sponsorships like American Standard and Bradford White Water Heaters,” he said. “(Cheever) has been on the US Snowboarding Team since 2006.

A lot of media outlets like to focus on his plumber’s license,”he said.

His parents will be leaving to support Jonathan very soon, ac-

cording to Kashima.

“Jonathan’s event (SBX) is on February 15th,” Kashima said.

“He’s 17th in the World and 5th American on the FIS Grand Prix standings,” he said.

Students helping students Here’s an example of great collaboration between the Saugus Public Library and a Belmonte Middle School teacher -- and, of course, Junior National Honor Society students from the Belmonte Middle School.

The elementary school students get help, the Belmonte students get credits for community service.
