this week as they searched for a solution to an approaching multimillion dollar budget shortfall in the School Department’s budget, caused largely by a massive drop in state aid. According to Superintendent of Schools Fred Foresteire, the School Department has about $26 million left in their budget for the year. That’s about $8 million short of what they’d need to fund the district at current levels through the end of the year. Currently, the city is planning on making a transfer to the schools to help fill that gap, and Mayor Carlo DeMaria and the city’s Chief Financial Officer, Eric Demas, are currently reviewing how much they can remove from the city’s budget. In other words, the city will step in to meet some of the shortfall, but just how much it will be able to contribute, and what the schools will have to do to make up any the shortfall that remains, has yet to be determined. “We know that there’s a problem, that there will be a shortfall if we keep going the way
