“All the posters were very well done by all the students,” said Corinne Riley, a member of the Saugus Veterans Council who organized the contest, working with the schools.

This was the second annual contest involving students from each of the fifth grades in Saugus Public Schools. The fifth-graders who worked on the poster include Yury O., Tori, J., Sam J., Angel G., Dan E. and Sabrina D. Kelly Moss is the Principal of the Waybright School.

The winner will be engraved on a brick and will be installed in the walk at Saugus Veterans Park. “Unfortunately it may take some time, because we put an order in when there are enough bricks to submit to the engraving company … But they will be informed as soon as it is ready. We would like to thank all the principals for participating, and last but not least the elementary art teachers Julie Simoes and Teresa Vidrine,” Riley said.

An interview with the top three students of Saugus High School’s Class of 2018 Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down with the three top students of the 2018 graduating class at Saugus High School: Valedictorian Hannah Spilman, Class President and Graduation Marshal Amanda Napoli and Salutatorian Rachel Virgin. All three of the students are recipients of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce Honor Schools Award, which recognizes the top 5 percent of 33 high schools in the region.

Spilman, who finished as the top student in her class, plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall, where she will major in chemical engineering. Among the numerous scholarships and scholastic honors she received were the school’s Excellence in Science Award (chosen by the Science Department as the department’s top student) and the May Kelly Excellence in Mathematics Award (chosen by the Math Department for the school’s top Math student).

Virgin, who finished as the second student, plans to attend Boston College next fall, with an interest in becoming an English teacher. The English Department awarded her the John Burns Excellence in English Award for finishing as the top English student.

The Social Studies Department awarded her the George Wood Excellence in History Award for being the best history student in her class.

Napoli, who received one of the two graduation marshal awards, finished third in her class overall.

She plans to attend Boston College next fall. She received this year’s Principal Leadership Award.

Napoli was the student recipient of last year’s “Readers Make Good Leaders” Award (sponsored by the Saugus Public Library Foundation) . Highlights of the recent interview follow.

Q: Amanda, what would you say to sum up the 2018 Saugus High School graduating class?

What makes it special?

Napoli: Our class has a way of coming together, even if it is at the last minute. We prove people wrong with what we do. A lot of people think little of us, because we’re such a small class, and sometimes we don’t put in that much effort to begin with. But then we always come together and we blow everyone away.

Q: Is there anything special, like one thing that sets it apart, or a special memory that you leave here with?

Napoli: Probably winning Color Day, even though everyone thought we weren’t going

to be able to do it. But we did.

Our decorations, our skit – we all worked together so nicely that we had a clean sweep. So, that’s a great memory and I will never forget it.

Q: Hannah, what do you think? What’s made the Saugus High School Class of 2018 special? What sets it apart?

Spilman: I would say that our class is very distinct in a lot of ways. Throughout the year, a lot of people have commented negatively about our class, saying that we’re rowdy, disobedient and that we’re one of the worst classes to have gone through Saugus High. But, in my speech that I’m going to say Friday – I think that we’re one of the most accepting classes that has gone through Saugus High and one of the most enthusiastic and supportive, and we proved a lot of people wrong.

Q: Is there one thing you can highlight that you will remember when you leave here?

Spilman: I would agree with what Amanda said about the Color Day. It was really like the turning point and represents how our class will be remembered for the rest of our lives.

Q: Rachel, what would you say as far as what sets this class apart from others?

Virgin: We’re very resilient.

Q: Please elaborate.

Virgin: I think that, well, like Amanda said, proving people wrong. I think that many people doubted us over the years, but we’ve all grown together and we’ve proven them wrong.

Q: Is there one thing that sets your class apart from others.

Or something that you’ll leave with that sort of sums up what

you will remember most about this class?

Virgin: I agree with them [Spilman and Napoli] – Color Day. I think that that was really important to us, because in past years, I didn’t think we did as well as we wanted to. So, our final year – winning it – was nice.

Q: So what are you going to do when you finish college?

Virgin: I want to be a high school English teacher.

Q: Do you want to come back here [Saugus High].

Virgin: Sure.

Q: Hannah, so what do you want to do when you complete your college education?

Spilman: I’m not really sure.

With my chemical engineering degree, maybe something environmental, and hopefully, I work for a company that supports conservation.

Q: Amanda? What’s your fu-

Town Manager announces agreement with Armstrong Ambulance own Manager Scott C. Crabtree this week announced that the Town of Saugus has entered into an agreement with Armstrong Ambulance to provide ambulance services to the residents and visitors of Saugus.

As the Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new sole ambulance provider, Armstrong will provide a comprehensive range of patient-centric services, from emergency and nonemergency Ambulance Service to Specialized Transportation, according to a press release issued by the town managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office. Armstrong Ambulance will also provide additional features new to the Saugus, such as access to up

Town of Saugus that were not previously available under our prior provider. These continued emergency medical services, as well as additional amenities, will be extremely beneficial for the safety of our residents and community,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Armstrong Ambulance originally partnered with the Town of Saugus in October 2016 to provide secondary ambulance services throughout the remainder of the Townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contract with American Ambulance. With a headquarters in Arlington, Mass., Armstrong Ambulance employs more than 300 highly trained emergency medical

Town Meeting reconvenes Monday night with members set to consider Fiscal ‘19 budget

By Mark E. Vogler assage of the town’s budget for the 2019 fiscal year that begins on July 1 is expected to be the top priority when the Annual Town Meeting reconvenes for its third session next Monday (June 4).

The Finance Committee gave a favorable review of the latest version of Article 2 during its review session last week. The session gets underway at 7:30 p.m. in the second-floor auditorium at Town Hall.

There were two major developments coming out of last week’s Finance Committee review session: • Saugus Public Schools will get an additional $200,000 in the School Department bud-

get proposed by Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree.

• The latest spending plan provides nearly $381,000 less for employee health insurance benefits than what Crabtree’s office initially thought was necessary.

Crabtree and town financial officials at that time, were initially bracing themselves for about a 10 percent increase in health insurance costs.

“But, we’re now projecting about a 6 and 1/4 percent increase. So, that will free up some money,” Crabtree said last week.

“While still spending within our means, we’re able to give the schools $200,000 more,” Crabtree said.

“They’re now $500,000 over

what they got (funded by Town Meeting) last year,” he said.

Saugus Public Schools Superintendent David DeRuosi, Jr. had recommended an FY19 budget of $29,359,141 -- an increase of $783,891 over the current budget, or a 2.74 percent increase.

But Crabtree’s latest recommendation -- $29,075,250 -- is still $283,891 less than what DeRuosi was seeking.

At the same, the town manager argued that it would be inaccurate to characterize that as a significant reduction in DeRuosi’s budget request. For one thing, Crabtree included $40,000 for a truancy officer within the budgeted salaries for the Town Manager’s Office.

Migliore avoided a total shutout by beating Wong in Precincts 1 and 2 in Lynn’s Ward 1. Overall, Wong won reelection handily – by 2,315 votes or a 55 percent margin (12,766 to 10,451).

Saugus softball team ices Stoneham with playoffs on the horizon

he Saugus softball team beat Stoneham, 9-3, on their senior day last Friday, honoring lone senior Brittney Sudanowicz en route to the 11th win of the season. Sudanowicz had a strong performance, coming up with an RBI double and a perfect night of fielding.

“I can’t stress enough how much of a pleasure it has been coaching Brittney,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist. “She helped shape the foundation of this program and epitomizes what high school athletics is all about … Brittney is a great student, leader, teammate and person, and she will be tremendously missed. It was important for us to get into the tournament if for nothing else to give her a few more practices and at least one more game.

Saugus fell behind early but their bats came alive in a fiverun fourth inning. Taylor Bogdanski, DJ Munafo, Nystasia Rowe and Emma Howard all doubled, then Alexa Ferraro singled to go up 7-1. Stoneham cut the lead to 7-3 in the fifth, but the Sachems answered right back in the home half of the inning with another two runs.

Walks to Sadie Dicenso and Munafo, combined with a single by Madison Niles, loaded the bases for Sudanowicz, who proceeded to rope a two-run single to left field. Saugus added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-3 courtesy of a single by pitcher Caitlyn Wood and a sacrifice fly by Munafo.

Wood pitched all seven innings and allowed just five hits

and one walk. She had four strikeouts and one earned run.

“Caitlyn retired the Spartans in order in the sixth and seventh to preserve a well-earned 9-3 victory,” Almquist said.

Saugus’s attention shifts toward the post-season, as playoff pairings will be announced

by June 5.

“I couldn’t be any prouder or happier for this group of kids,” said Almquist. “We dug ourselves a bit of a hole earlier in the season by losing four onerun games, but the kids never got down. They kept battling and for the third year in a row earned a spot in the State Tournament … It’s a credit to the kids as well as Captains Emma Howard and Brittney Sudanowicz for keeping things together when it would have been so easy to hang their heads after suffering all these close losses.”

Sachems baseball team loses to Dracut in season finale but are ready for playoffs

Saugus let up a 4-0 lead in the regular season finale on Sunday against Dracut and fell, 6-4, making their record 10-10. “We started off well, really good situational hitting to go up 4-0,” said Saugus coach Joe Luis. “But we allowed a run in the fourth, and then the wheels came off in the fifth.”

Tringale and Graffeo were named Northeast-10 All-Stars following the game.

Despite the loss, Luis is hoping all his players get back up to speed ahead of the state tournament. Weather permitting, he plans to scrimmage Lowell Catholic as a primer for the playoffs.

Seedings should be out June 5 and Luis is hoping for his group to make a deep run. “It doesn’t matter whether you play a good team first or a weak team,” Luis said. “In the tournament you basically have to play everyone at some point so it doesn’t matter too much … Hopefully, we can have [Tringale] ready for game one and we play a strong, complete game. Our team batting average is a little bit low. We’ve a lot of situational hitting, plus good defense, to grind out results this year.”

SCHOOL | FROM PAGE 1 “We have a great group of top-end students – the Academy kids and the Honor Society kids … These kids have done very well in the classroom,” Hashem said in an interview Wednesday night following the Scholarship and Academy Service Awards Night.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. David DeRuosi praised the class at the outset of the awards ceremony for the students’ commitment to academic excellence. “Friday is your night. You made us all proud,” DeRuosi told the class’s top students, who assembled in the High School auditorium, which was decorated with red, white and silver star-shaped balloons on the stage.

The superintendent called the night “the essence of awards, honors and scholarship.”

They set the tone for Wednesday’s awards ceremony from the outset by sharing the top four department awards. Spilman, top student, received the prizes for the best student in Math and Science. Virgin, the second top-ranked student, won the prizes for excellence in History and English. “Hannah and Rachel … they have done outstanding work,” Hashem said.

“They got the big awards in the subject areas. Not only were they the overall top students, but they were the top students in the disciplines as well. That’s a pleasure to see,” he said.

Michelle Lee, an English teacher and a faculty advisor to Saugus High’s National Honor Society, said she expects “big things” from Spilman and Virgin. “The top two students in this graduating class are both amazing young ladies,” said Lee, who has been teaching at Saugus High for seven years.

“They are smart. They are kind. They are talented, and I know they are going to go out

and do amazing in the world,” she said.

Lee also included Class President Amanda Napoli – one of the two student Graduation Marshals and the third highest ranking student scholastically – as being among the best students. “Each year, it’s just a pleasure to see the students who leave us and go out and do great things in the world. And I know Hannah, Rachel and Amanda will be no different as our top three ladies in this class,” Lee said.

“I’m just very proud to have known all of these students and am very excited to see them walk across the stage Friday night,” she said.

Hashem lauded Napoli specifically for being the class leader when he introduced her as this year’s recipient of the Principal’s Leadership Award.

“As far as the president, Amanda has done absolutely everything. She had taken a leadership role for the last handful of years,” Hashem said in an interview later. “She’s very proactive. She’s a very mature stu-

Well done, Saugus High Class of 2018!

I had the pleasure of spending Thursday night in the auditorium at Saugus High School for the annual Scholarship and Academic/Service Awards Night.

This was the second year in a row that I accepted the verbal invitation of High School officials to come down and witness some real positive news.

“For me, this is one of the finest evenings of the school year,” Saugus High School Principal Michael Hashem told the audience gathered in the auditorium.

Hashem told the crowd that he’s been participating in the event for the past 34 years – first as a student, later as a teacher and more recently as a school administrator.

Hats off, not only to these well-deserving students who were honored this week, but also to their teachers and parents who shared and supported their academic successes which will better prepare them for their college careers and the next stage of their lives.

Like in virtually every community across America, there’s a lot of great work that gets done in the classroom and in the study hall, which, unfortunately, gets overshadowed by the negative news that bombards us daily – on the Internet, in nightly television newscasts, over the radios and in the newspapers.

Hey Saugonians, take some time today to embrace the success of the young people in your hometown. If you have the time

Be careful out there This is a message worth repeating over and over again as the distracted pedestrians apparently keep wandering out into harm’s way.

Earlier in the week, a driver struck a pedestrian on Walnut Street. A Lynn man, who fortunately, wasn’t seriously hurt, walked into the path of a car, according to police reports. He didn’t use the crosswalk and was more interested in listening to his cellphone than paying attention to traffic. Very dumb and very dangerous.

On Wednesday night, as I drove up the Main Street exit ramp from Route 1, I encountered a similar situation. A kid who was listening to his cellphone or iPad wandered right into the path of my car without even looking up. If I were a leadfoot driver or found myself distracted, I would have run into him while turning right onto Main Street and headed into town. I’m convinced that an elderly driver with slow reaction time would have hit the pedestrian. The kid was more interested in the conversation on his cellphone.

Unfortunately, this week’s accident and my close encounter with a distracted pedestrian seem like they’re part of an increasing way of life on the roadways – and something that needs to be included in future driver’s handbooks published by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

A good veteran at work

While counting the stars on the World War I and World War II monuments in Saugus Veterans Park a couple of weeks ago (these are the town’s service people who were killed in action), I ran into Nick Milo, a U.S. Army veteran from the Vietnam War era. He’s also an officer of the Saugus Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2346.

I couldn’t help but notice Milo doing some painstaking inspection of the newer monuments in the park. My curiosity sparked a conversation. I learned that Milo, who is a mechanical engineer, helped complete the newer monuments several years ago.

But he still remains dedicated to the task of making sure the monuments are well maintained and repaired if necessary.

In fact, he said he pays for whatever supplies he needs out of his own pocket and puts in the labor pro bono. He says it’s his quiet way of giving back to the departed veterans or living ones who need help – the subjects of the more contemporary monuments in the park. If work needs to be done, Milo takes care of it.

I mentioned him in the top part of last Friday’s Memorial Day story in The Saugus Advocate that was accompanied by a photograph of him near one of the monuments. I found it remarkable that a veteran of his age and war era was out their every year, right before Memorial Day, making sure the monuments he helped complete were in good shape for the holiday. I certainly thought it was worth noting in a feature story that referred to him in a subheadline as “an old veteran.” It was meant as complimentary, in the same way that writers might refer to “an old pro,”“an old-timer,”“an old hand,”

I long remember that old saying that the famous World War II General Douglas MacArthur said in his farewell address to Congress: “Old soldiers never die … they just fade away.”

But, it didn’t set well with a 74-year-old U.S. Army veteran, who took great umbrage to being referred to as “an old veteran.” Sorry if you were offended, Nick. It certainly was never the intent of our story – which was to cite the commendable work of a good veteran who wants to honor those veterans who gave so much for this country. What you’re doing is a great example for others to follow. Keep it up.

Trash/Recycling running on one-day holiday delay The Town of Saugus’s trash and recycling collection will continue to run on a one-day delay through tomorrow (Saturday, June 2), due to the observance of Memorial Day. The compost site will be open as usual from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, June 2). The Town of Saugus would like to thank everyone for their cooperation. This is your time to pass it along to your child,” says the announcement.

Town announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off site The Town of Saugus announces that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works at 515 Main St. There is no preregistration or fee required to enter the site; however, proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers. Additional acceptable items

son Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. They will play 76 games in 79 days (38 home, 38 road) this season, with their home opener scheduled for June 18 and their last home game on September 3. Home games begin at 7:05 p.m., Monday-Friday, and at 5:05 p.m., Saturday & Sundays.

The Library offers a dated voucher for most Spinners home games. Each voucher allows patrons to purchase up to six tickets at 50% off the regular price. (For example: a $7 Reserved Ticket would cost $3.50.)

The following materials may not be recycled through the Town’s curbside collection service: • Plastic bags and film wraps – can be recycled at a local food store, Walmart or Target.

• Styrofoam – should be placed in the trash.

• Clothes hangers – can be given to dry-cleaners.

• Plastic hoses – dispose in the trash.

• Rigid plastics and kids’ toys – may be recycled at the drop-off site located behind 515 Main St. • Scrap metal – can be recycled at the drop-off site.

“Due to recent international recycling restrictions, our local collection facility is no longer able to recycle materials in plastic bags,” said Cerbone. “We encourage residents to recycle their plastic bags at your local supermarket or retailer.”
