City Council recognizes Speaker DeLeo for decade of service

On Monday night, the City Council awarded Speaker DeLeo a citation for 10 years of service to the community. peaker of the House Robert DeLeo was recently commended by the City Council for 10 years of service on Beacon Hill. DeLeo is the longest-serving speaker in state history with former Speaker Thomas McGee, Sr. (D-Lynn) behind him, serving from 1975 to 1984.

“My constituents have stuck by me all these years,”DeLeo said during Monday night’s meeting.

“They’re like family to me.”

He also said it was special to be recognized by the city councillors, who he works with on a daily basis. “This recognition means a lot to me,” DeLeo said.

“I can’t thank you enough.”

Ward 1 Councillor Joanne McKenna said the commendation goes beyond 10 years of service. “You’re a caring and passionate person and a really good man,” she said. “You’re always going out of your way to help anyone that needs it.”

City hopes to attract casino cash with Beach City promo

T

he city is seeking a grant from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to create a tourism video in an effort to attract tourists who will be visiting the Encore Boston Harbor casino in Everett. Economic Development Consultant Paul Rupp said he applied for a $50,000 grant, from which $40,000 would be used to create the video with the remaining $10,000 to be used for marketing and promotional efforts.

“The video will promote Revere’s hotels, shops, restaurants, nightlife, parks, open spaces, the revitalization of America’s first public beach and other attractions for the guests staying

at Greater Boston’s first luxury resort and casino to experience,” Rupp wrote in the grant application.

Rupp said Friday that if funding is approved, the video will be distributed on YouTube, the city’s website and across social media.

Although the casino will be approximately five miles away, the purpose is to develop a symbiotic relationship between Encore and Revere’s growing hotel industry. “Revere believes its coming inventory of at least 1,700 hotel keys, its restaurants and its visitor attractions make Revere an attractive add-on for visitors to the new Encore casino,” Rupp said in the grant application.

She also said DeLeo has been a good friend and advocate, helping her to address and resolve some major issues in the Beachmont neighborhood. “I want to thank you, Speaker DeLeo, for your continued support and dedication to our residents in Revere and especially to the Beachmont community,” said McKenna.

Citing a love affair with the city, DeLeo added that residents have treated him well.

Although he doesn’t live in Revere, DeLeo said he would like to be thought as a “Son of the city of Revere.”

Elected on Jan. 4, 1995, DeLeo served on the Ethics, Local Affairs, Third Reading and Ways and Means Committees in the House of Representatives. He was elected as the Speaker on Jan. 27, 2009.

Following the meeting, councillors and other local officials described their experiences working with DeLeo. Councillor-at-Large George Rotondo said although they have different political views, DeLeo is one of his favorite liberals. “He’s the epitome of public service,” Rotondo said, adding that DeLeo is a constant professional, and “His first interests are the people and local government.”

Ward 5 Councillor John Powers attributed DeLeo’s longevity to the way he respects dignitaries. “He does a fantastic job representing the city,” Powers said.

Councillor-at-Large Daniel Rizzo said DeLeo has exceeded all expectations. “This award can’t possibly encompass it all,” Rizzo said. “I hope he understands what he does and what he means to us.”

When Rizzo was mayor, he and DeLeo worked together following the EF2 tornado that blasted Revere with 120 mileper-hour winds. He said DeLeo also offered his assistance

during the intense winter of 2014-2015, which dumped an unprecedented 108.6 inches of snow.

Richard Serino, legislative aide to State Rep. RoseLee Vincent, said that on the local level, DeLeo is compassionate and ensures that his constituents are taken care of during trying times. “On the state level, he is a very deliberate thinker and builds consensus among state leaders and stakeholders to produce meaningful policies,” Serino said.

Bill to study health impacts from airplanes Also during Monday’s meeting, McKenna asked that Mayor Brian Arrigo request the state and federal delegation to join Congressman Stephen Lynch to focus on the bill he

filed that would allow the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to study the health impacts from planes. According to McKenna, the bill would benefit Revere residents who are directly impacted by flights going in and out of Logan International Airport. During a recent six-month period, 64,000 planes flew over Revere – primarily Beachmont.

Therefore, McKenna said, it is time for legislators and city officials to stand up and advocate for the health and well-being of Revere residents.

“The residents of Beachmont are inundated constantly with air, stress and noise pollution,” said McKenna. “Their quality of life is compromised every single day.”

Revere Public Schools parents owe meal fees

uring Tuesday’s School Committee meeting, it was announced that parents have a large bill to pay in overdue breakfast and lunch fees. According to School Department Chief Financial Officer Matthew Kruse, approximately $21,000 is owed, compared to the $16,000 that was owed last year, across 11 schools for 183 school days.

Kruse explained that parents either send their children to school without money are unable to understand or fill out eligibility forms due to a language barrier or simply take advantage of the system. “There’s always been an unpaid balance, especially in urban districts,” Kruse said.

“In the past when children missed five meals, they’d give them a cheese sandwich, but did away with that so they

wouldn’t feel embarrassed.”

Kruse said that 70 percent of students in the district have free or reduced lunch.

A reduced lunch is 40 cents per meal, according to Kruse.

Kruse explained that the district needs full documentation of income, including proof of income, noting that lunch costs roughly $2.75 per student. “We’d then call parents and ask them to provide the money and/or this informa-

Adult Italian Classes begin March 19

dult Italian classes will be offered by the Appian Club of Stoneham starting on Tuesday evenings, March 19, 2019. A beginner’s class will start with the basics (pronunciations, phrases, etc.) and give you a firm foundation for the language. A more advanced class will also be available on Tuesday evenings for those with knowledge of Italian. The eight week classes will be held on Tuesday evenings in Stoneham and the cost is $150 plus a $20 text.

The Rossetti-Cowan Senior Center Valentine’s Day party was held on Tuesday, February 26th. DJ Alan Labella, with enthusiastic aplomb, gathered seniors on the dance floor for some unbelievable music and dancing. It was an hour of non-stop participation that was preceded by a dinner featuring Chicken Cordon Bleu, dessert donated by Speaker DeLeo, and many raffles and prizes. he Revere-Malden co-op hockey team (4-13-3 overall, 3-7-2 in the Northeastern Conference) closed out its season with perhaps its best and worst efforts of the year. The Patriots first took care of business against host Peabody, 5-1 Feb. 20. But on Senior Night last Friday, Beverly shut them down to the tune of 8-0.

“I was very happy with the effort against Peabody,” said coach Joe Ciccarello. “It was a

chippy, choppy game that we found a way to win.”

The Tanners scored the first goal of the game on the power play early on, but visiting Revere evened the score before the end of the period. The Patriots then took a 3-1 lead after two.

Cam Mazza, Rich Briana, Alexio Trichilio, Wayne Cintolo and Matt D’Annolfo were credited with the goals. Cintolo, Trichilio, Briana and D’Annolfo accounted for one assist apiece.

After giving up an early power play goal, Malden sophomore goalie J.T. Bowdridge stymied the Tanners the rest of the way. The Tanners tested him with at least 30 shots on net, and he was equal to the task.

“It was a good back and forth game,” said Ciccarello.

But then, it was a much different story against Beverly on Senior Night. “We just didn’t have our feet in this game, and as a result Beverly was moving much faster than us,” said Ciccarello.

The Panthers led, 2-0 after one, and 4-0 after two. They broke the game wide open with four late power play goals against beleaguered freshman goalie Kurt Jancsy. Bowdridge played the first two periods in net.

At the beginning of the game, the Patriots and their fans saluted the team’s seven seniors for their contributions to the program the last four years. Matt Cravotta, Andres Cardona, Zach Rufo, Briana, Mazza and Cintolo were the active seniors on this year’s roster, while Mark Giordano had to watch the games from the sidelines, while still recuperating from an ACL injury sustained playing lacrosse last spring.
