Dearest Maketewah Members, It’s hard to believe that it’s September already! It’s always sad to see the pool season come to an end. I hope many of you have had the opportunity to experience our new pool bar! It’s the first of many great additions headed your way. Mark is working hard to get the process started on our new paddle ball court construction and soon to follow will be 2 additional hitting bays in our practice center. Come January, we start the renovation of the interior of your clubhouse! I am really excited to be able to see each step of the renovation, making your club better and improving your experience with us as members. I do want to mention that during this time, many restaurants and other service industries are critically short staffed. Maketewah is no exception. Our servers are working extra hard to make up for the lack of staff to ensure that your ticket times are kept to a minimum and your service is not compromised. We thank you for your patience and understanding. We are actively recruiting for new talent and hope to be back to a full staff relatively soon. Again, thank you. Lastly, as many of you are aware, one of our assistant golf professionals, Jacob Inesta will be leaving us midmonth to pursue a career in sales. We are very proud of him for pursuing this new endeavor and wish him nothing but absolute success in his new role. Jacob was a great asset to the club, to our members and the game of golf! I know that many of you stand with me when I say that he will truly be missed. Best of luck, Jacob! I hope each of you enjoy your September! I know that I am looking forward to some crisp air, orange leaves, cozy sweaters and all things fall (other than football..I’m more of a baseball kind of girl)! See you around the club! Warm Regards, Melissa Paule Membership and Marketing Manager

MAK’S SENIOR ORF GROUP Mak’s Senior ORF group (over 50 golfers) plays a fun 18 contest every Tuesday & Thursday at 10:00 am. Tuesday game is 2 Best Ball, and Thursday game is Stableford. Players sign in at 9:45 on those days, and teams are drawn and play with handicaps: each season 4 special events and 2 guest days. The event in August was the annual Rieger Shamble on the 10th and won by the team of Luken Keller, Kissel, and G Lanham with a fantastic score of 109. Awards and tasty lunch were held at the 19th hole after the round. The main event for August, held on the 24th, was the 9th annual match for the Elberon-Avondale Cup between the hills cc and Mak’s seniors. The match alternates between the course search year. Mak held a 7-1 advantage going into this 2021 contest which was postponed due to extreme weather conditions but promises to be resumed in 2022. This match was actually started in the early 1900’s between then the Elberon CC vs. the Avondale Athletic Club, which was the beginning of both club histories. The ORF’S final special event will be Closing Day ORFTOBERFEST Scramble Guest Day on October 7th. The group is always open for more MAK seniors to join in (the only requirement is age 50). All interested, please check with Assistant Pro Ian or visit any Tuesday or Thursday. Keep our tradition going since 1985!

Fitness 101 By: Paul Bodenbach MA., FAFS, FMR, GPS Competitorsedge@msn.com (859) 802-2235

Let’s talk about late season conditioning. I’m referring to the activities we perform throughout the summer season. Tennis, pickle ball, golf, swimming, cycling and running all take a tole on our bodies over time. During the season we place greater emphasis on skill training for those activities and less on conditioning of strength and flexibility. Studies have attributed an increase of fatigue and injury related to this decrease in conditioning.

Late season is usually the time when we wish to perform our best. We’ve put in the time and effort to sharpen our skills. However, by doing so, we my have neglected aspects of our training needed to perform at the highest level. With that, special emphasis may be needed to help return our bodies peak conditioning. This can be done in many instances without great amounts of effort.

One of the most common issues in decreasing performance is muscle fatigue which creates stiffness and tightness. This tightness decreases range of motion and the ability for muscles to fire properly. Therefore, concentration on flexibility is a must for late season performance. However, a stretching program just might not be enough. Repetitive movements cause specific muscle breakdown which tends to be harder to reverse. Assisted stretching is a passive technique where the practitioner actually helps the client through the range of motion. Athletic trainers and physical therapists utilize this technique regularly. I’ve also educated many personal trainers in its use. Muscles react well as they are relaxed and I’m doing the actual movement. I also utilize additional hands on therapeutic techniques to more completely effect the targeted muscles. It usually only takes a few sessions to gain full range of motion. The muscles then fire properly for peak performance.

What people say: I can’t say enough about how Paul “Doc” Bodenbach has changed my fitness and health. He has totally changed my body and it’s made my golf game more enjoyable with a swing that is more powerful and easier to control.
