May 2022 At the distillery, we truly rely on everyone to successfully do what we do. But for this shipment, we’re focused on two people who are truly masters. (It’s literally in their titles.) Master of Maturation Jane Bowie and Master Distiller Denny Potter know a thing or two about whisky, and they used that knowledge to each create their ideal expressions.

These two Private Selection expressions both started with the very same Maker’s Mark® liquid we use in every bottle we make. But because Jane’s and Denny’s palates are uniquely theirs, the expressions are quite opposite in what they have to offer. Naturally, that means they’re a perfect fit for our drop. They’re also delicious – making them a perfect fit for your glass.

One Liquid AND A Dream How does a distillery that uses the same liquid to make all their bourbon make hundreds of truly unique expressions? Well, in looking to solidify his legacy, Bill Samuels, Jr., tasked the team with just that. The answer was inserting custom staves. What came from it was Maker’s Mark 46® – the very first bottle in our Wood Finishing Series. Since then, we’ve used the same process to let friends and partners carefully choose a unique combination of 10 staves, which are added to a barrel to finish aging in our limestone cellar. In the end, they get their own unique Private Selection expression out of 1,001 possibilities. Not bad for a single liquid, huh?

expression MAKER’S MARK® 2022 PRIVATE SELECTION

Jane Bowie Selection For her ideal whisky, Jane prefers pours that are darker, dryer and have a longer finish. So, when she created this expression in the winter, she decided to lean into these characteristics. Overall, you’ll get lovely notes of chocolate-covered figs. In her words, “It’s the kind of whisky I’d want to drink outside.”

AROMA: Fruit-forward with floral and tobacco notes

TASTE: Round, dark fruit with hints of chocolate and spice

FINISH: Long, dry and dark

expression MAKER’S MARK® 2022 PRIVATE SELECTION

Denny Potter Selection Denny tends to favor the sweeter side of things – looking for whisky heavy in vanilla – as well as putting a little more focus on texture. It makes sense that his expression delivers vanilla bean, cream soda and slight orange notes. You might also get a little spiciness as a nod to the whisky-making process. Typical Master Distiller.

AROMA: Vanilla, sweet oak, cinnamon and bright fruit

TASTE: Creamy texture with caramelized sugars and wood spice

FINISH: Round, long and clean with subtle spice

Since 1953, our focus has always been making whisky. But there’s a lot that goes into the process that affects much more than the whisky itself.

We’ve always made every effort to improve and nurture those areas.

Every ingredient we use comes from nature, leading us to invest heavily in practices to protect it. It takes a lot of energy, so we’ve helped offset what we can by incorporating solar panels into our distillery. And we rely on people to keep our operations running, which made us want to give back by supporting higher education, arts and the hospitality industry.

Did we change anything to get here? Nope. Do we plan on changing anything? Also, nope. We’re simply going to continue doing what we’ve been doing best for nearly 70 years – making a positive impact and really good bourbon.
