Made in Kenya

Made In Kenya Initiative The Made in Kenya Initiative aimed at boosting local manufacturing sector by authenticating goods and services originating from the country. This will be done through labeling all locallymade goods and services with a “Made In Kenya” Brand Mark. The term ‘Made in’ describes where products originate from. It denotes an association with the place of origin. Country of origin is a driver of consumer choice. According to research conducted by Future Brand in the year 2014, country of origin, design and manufacturer ranked higher than traditional drivers of choice like Price, Availability and Style. ‘Made in Kenya Brand Mark’ signifies that our products are unique, authentic and of high quality.

3

Objectives of the Made In Kenya Initiative

Enable the implementation of section 155 of the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act 2015 which gives preferential procurement to manufactured articles, materials and supplies partially mined or pro-duced in Kenya or, where applicable, have been assembled in Kenya.

Strengthen Kenya’s position as a Made-in country Brand in light of the Big Four Development Strategy where the local manufacturing sector has been marked as a priority sector. This will go a long way in positioning Kenya as Africa’s Industrial Hub.

Enable consumers locally and abroad immediately identify a product as Kenyan and associate the product with quality and authentic Kenyan value.

Access to government procurement services

Access to financing

One of the benefits to be enjoyed by members who adopt the Made in Kenya brand mark is that they will be entitled to preferential procurement for manufactured articles, materials and supplies partially mined, produced or assembled in Kenya as guided by section 155 of the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act 2015. Since government is the largest buyer of goods in Kenya, manufacturers will be in a position to take advantage of this opportunity and secure increased business.

Access to financing in conjunction with our key stakeholders in the financial services sector and development partners, the MIK team will identify existing opportunities to access financing in the form of credit facilities at discounted rates as well as access to grants. This will allow them to access much needed financial resources to carry out their operations smoothly. We shall do this by looking out for opportunities, mapping them out and sharing with the adoptees.
