STATEMENT FROM THE PRINCIPAL SECRETARY, STATE DEPARTMENT FOR TRADE

From Market Access to Market Presence

Kenyan tea, coffee, macadamia, avocado, fresh produce, flowers, leather that previously added between four and thirty per cent to their landed price. Our task at CIIE is to make sure Chinese buyers know this, and know where to find us. The scale of the opportunity is clear. China imported goods worth about USD 2.6 trillion in 2025, making it the world's second-largest importer. Yet Kenya's exports to China in the same year stood at only USD 130.8 million, against imports of USD 5.19 billion. A trade imbalance of more than USD 5 billion is not sustainable, and it will not correct itself. The State Department for Trade is addressing this imbalance on three fronts. First, we are working with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) and Chinese authorities to conclude and implement the phytosanitary protocols that open specific product lines, building on the success of fresh avocados, which Kenya became the first African country to export to China in 2022. Second, we are strengthening our quality infrastructure through the Kenya Bureau of Standards so that Kenyan products meet Chinese labelling, safety and traceability requirements from the first shipment. Third, we are supporting value addition, so that more of what we sell to China leaves Kenya as a branded, finished product rather than a raw commodity.

A Partnership Ready for Its Next Chapter
O
n behalf of the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Beijing, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Kenya pavilion at the 9th China
International Import Expo in Shanghai, and to introduce this catalogue of Kenyan exhibitors. Kenya and China have enjoyed diplomatic relations since December 1963, only days after Kenya's independence. Over six decades, that friendship

has grown into one of the most substantive partnerships on the African continent, spanning infrastructure, energy, education, tourism, technology and, increasingly, trade. China is today Kenya's largest source of imports, and Chinese investment is visible across our economy, from the Standard Gauge Railway to our special economic zones. Our trade relationship, however, has not yet reached its full potential. In 2025 Kenya exported goods worth USD 130.8 million to China, against imports of more than USD 5 billion. The Embassy's priority is to help close

that gap by bringing more Kenyan products to Chinese consumers, and CIIE is one of the most effective platforms available to us. The environment for Kenyan exporters in China has changed significantly. Since 1 May 2026, Kenyan goods enter China duty-free under China's zerotariff treatment for African partners. Market-access protocols for Kenyan avocados, and continuing work on other horticultural, aquatic and agricultural products, are creating new channels. Chinese consumers are also seeking exactly what Kenya produces best: highland black tea, specialty Arabica coffee, macadamia nuts, avocado oil, fresh fruit and juices, and well-made consumer goods with a clear origin story.

Kenya's exports to China in 2025 were led by copper scrap, tea, coffee, manganese ore and leather. The greatest untapped potential lies in bulk black tea, titanium and zirconium ores, and a range of processed agricultural products where Kenya already has proven supply capacity. Our presence at CIIE therefore has two purposes. The first is commercial: to connect Kenyan companies with Chinese buyers, generate orders and build distribution partnerships. The second is reputational: to show the Chinese market that Kenya is a credible, reliable and high-quality source of products, and that the Kenyan brand stands for excellence.

T

International Import Expo. CIIE is one of the world's largest import-focused exhibitions, and our presence here is part of a sustained effort to expand market access for Kenyan products, generate export orders and narrow the bilateral trade gap with China. The numbers explain why this matters. China imported goods worth about
