arin residents have access to great public schools. So why pony up big bucks for private school tuition?

“It’s all about finding the right fit,” says Kathy Margolis, a mother of two in Greenbrae. Her son, Ryan, attended both public and private — before ultimately finding a match at Marin Primary and Middle School, a private school in Larkspur.

“All these changes helped me realize that there is no one best school, but simply the best school for your child.”

Education experts concur: “It’s important to find a program where your child will thrive emotionally and academically, and in some cases, that can even mean two different schools within the same family,” says Julie

Elam, head of school for Marin Primary and Middle School (MPMS). Of course, zeroing in on the perfect fit requires a little research. To help you make this weighty decision, we asked private school advocates for key points to consider.

Academic Rigor For starters, you’ll want to look for programs that best complement your child’s scholastic abilities. This might mean choosing a program to accommodate gifted children or one that can adequately support a child who struggles in one or several areas. Ring Mountain Day School in Mill Valley, for example, offers accelerated classes to kids willing and able to work above grade level.

freshman-level math,” says Liz Katz, the school’s director of communications and enrollment. Conversely, Star Academy in San Rafael accommodates kids contending with learning challenges.

Some schools have resources for learners on both ends of the spectrum. At MPMS, for example, students who excel in a particular discipline are eligible for small group pullouts designed to keep them appropriately challenged. “But we are also open to making appropriate classroom accommodations and providing one-to-one tutoring when necessary,” Elam says.

Teaching Methods Of course, how a child best absorbs material will depend on his or her learning style. So it’s important to find a school that teaches to individual strengths. That could mean looking at schools inclined toward either a teachercentered program or a learner-centered program. In the teacher-centered paradigm, students are asked to focus on listening to what the teacher is explaining. This method tends to work best for kids who need a quiet, orderly classroom as well as those who prefer to work independent of their classmates. Student-centered programs, on the other hand, rely heavily on group projects, which, while making for a more chaotic classroom, can keep kids who crave social interaction more engaged.

Faith For some families, rolling spirituality into education is essential. At Marin Catholic, students can participate in mass and other seasonal liturgies and attend prayer services throughout the year. Brandeis Marin students learn through a Jewish lens.

Dogma and doctrine aside, faith-based programs put a strong emphasis on morality. “A Jewish concept called tikkun olam, or repairing the world, is an integral part of our curriculum,” says Brandeis Marin head of school Peg Sandel. “It’s about teaching kids how their actions have an effect on the world around them and what they can do to make it a better place.” Dan Babior, director of high school admissions at the San Anselmo–based San Domenico School, says, “Teaching the values of public service and social justice is one of San Domenico’s core values.”

San Domenico differs from most faith-based programs in that it focuses on nondenominational faith rather than any one religion. “We teach about all of the world’s great religions, as the Dominican belief system is about inclusion and inquiry,” Babior says. The diverse

student body reflects that approach: “Only about onethird of our families identify as Catholic,” he adds. “The other two-thirds identify as observing other faiths.”

Stability For kids who have trouble with change or are in life situations that are creating too much tumult, there’s something to be said for consistency. To that end, most of the area’s private schools offer kindergarten-througheighth-grade programs. A few, including MPMS, have programs that begin in the preschool years. “Typically, 30 to 40 percent of our preschool class stays all the way through eighth grade,” says Donna Fanfelle, admissions director at MPMS. “We grow our class sizes in kindergarten and then again in fifth and sixth grades, which shakes up the class dynamics, but also allows the stability of a familiar setting.”

Another stable solution is a school where students spend multiple years with the same educators. At Ring Mountain Day School, for example, K through 5 students remain with the same teacher for two years, and middle school students have the same teachers for three years in a row. “This gives teachers an opportunity to develop

deeper relationships with their students and in turn helps them better understand how each student learns,” says Ring Mountain’s Katz.

After-Hours Supervision Because school hours and parental work hours don’t always coincide, some families seek out private school to ensure high-quality child care before and after school. Marin Country Day School offers afterschool activities with the option of picking up your child as late as 6:15 p.m. Additionally, private schools may offer a variety of extracurricular student activities — including drum lessons, robotics, martial arts and computer programming — right on campus. This setup can be a real plus for parents who don’t have the luxury of leaving work to move a child from one activity to the next.

Although after-school care may matter less for teens, parents who travel for work sometimes find themselves needing help with overnight supervision.

For these situations, San Domenico’s occasional stayover program can be a lifesaver. “We are also a boarding school, but our day student tuition includes 20 days of overnight stays on campus,” says Babior.

Class Size The student-teacher ratio is another factor to keep in mind. Clearly, the lower the ratio, the more individualized attention a child is apt to receive. “It was a primary motive for leaving the public school,” says Margolis. “He would have his hand raised in his class of 26 and just get tired of waiting to get called on. With 16 kids he gets called on a lot more often, which also allows him to feel more engaged.”

But for some kids, having only a dozen kids in class (or possibly even the whole grade level) can be socially stifling.

And a shy child might thrive in a small class but feel lost in a bigger group. Some private schools offer a hybrid option where classes are larger, but led by two full-time teachers.

Because private school tuition can strain a family budget, it’s vital to make sure yours is money well spent.

“Moving Ryan to private school was a challenging decision for us to make financially,” Margolis says. “I can’t say he’s learning more than he did at the public school, but he’s certainly more excited about learning.” For many, that’s a priceless return on investment. m

Private School by the Numbers

A look at trends in private education across the nation and here at home. BY KASIA PAWLOWSKA Nationwide 2013 statistics according to the National Center for Education Statistics: • 30,861 private schools in the United States.

• 5.3 million PK–12 students in private schools.

• 80 percent of private schools have religious affiliations.

• 86 percent of private schools have fewer than 300 students.

• 13 percent of families with children in grades K–12 with annual incomes of at least $75,000 have children only in private schools.

(Four percent have children in both types of schools.)

• The average private school tuition in the U.S. for a non-sectarian elementary school is $15,945 a year, and $27,302 a year for secondary school.

• While Catholic schools have waned in popularity over the years (54.5 percent of students went to Catholic schools in 1989–1990) they were still the biggest group in 2011–2012, accounting for 42.9 percent of students.

Marin statistics according to the Private School Review: • 51 private schools in Marin County.

• 8,670 students in private schools.

• 29 percent of Marin County private schools are religiously affiliated, the most common being Roman Catholic and Christian.

• The Marin student-to-teacher ratio of 8:1 is lower than the state private school average of 12:1.
