a warm welcome Marin County is know for its excellent public schools, but in some cases a private school is a better fit for a child. While campus designation for public schools is determined by neighborhood, the choice is not so easy when it comes to a private or independent program. With many available options, where to send a child for school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make and the process can be quite overwhelming. In our fifth annual Bay Area Private School Guide, we present resources and information to help you find a fit that’s just right. We open with the stories of four parents who found — for very different reasons — that the benefits of private school outweighed those of a public one. We also present a list and details on more than 150 private schools in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma and Napa. This comprehensive guide provides all the tools you need to evaluate your options for the 2015–2016 school year.

FOUR FAMILIES WHO DECIDED TO OPT OUT OF MARIN’S PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM.

arin is known for its excellent public schools. In fact, the community is filled with city expats, who gave up urban living in search of better education choices. But if that’s the case, what compels so many Marin families to opt out of the public education system? Well, as it turns out, there’s not one good answer to that question. People choose private for any number of reasons. We asked four local families to tell us how they came to the decision and why they chose the school they did. Although the motivating factors were different in all cases, all families agreed that the tuition is money well spent.

The Rush Family: Enrolled Since Preschool Like many Marin moms, Marcy Rush began researching preschools for her daughter before the child was even out of diapers. She looked at a number of programs, but the clear favorite was Marin Horizon School in Mill Valley.

So she enrolled her daughter in its toddler program and, well, loved it so much, she just couldn’t see moving her anywhere else. “I did a tour of the public school and it was impressive,” says Rush. “But I noticed that Marin Horizon School made a point of really emphasizing the children’s social-emotional development, and that was important to me. I was also impressed with how thoughtfully and respectfully the eighth-grade students I met treated the younger students, parents and teachers.”

She also appreciated Marin Horizon School’s Montessori-inspired teaching methods and projectbased learning, which include multiage classrooms for students in lower grades. “The younger children aspire to be like the older students,” says Rush, who now has a first and fifth grader at the school. “And the older kids treat the younger kids with such kindness and respect, so all in all it’s just great modeling.” Even when they transition into same-age classes in middle school, Rush says, the school encourages camaraderie between the upper and lower grades by creating a buddy system. “There’s just such a sense of community there,” she adds. “The academics are challenging but the children are not stressed, and I believe that makes it easier to learn.”

The Tachiki Family: Impressed by Alumni Mandy Tachiki of San Anselmo never intended to send her two boys, 6 and 9, to the Mark Day School (formerly Saint Mark’s) in San Rafael. Both she and her husband attended public schools and fully expected their children to follow suit.

As it happened, Tachiki, a Brown University alumna, has helped out her alma mater over the years by doing regional prospective student interviews. “I couldn’t help but notice that all of my favorite students had attended Saint Mark’s,” she says. So when it came time to enroll her firstborn in kindergarten, Tachiki decided she owed it to her son to at least tour Mark Day School before committing to the neighborhood school. “When we went to look at the school, it just kind of blew our mind,” she recalls. “It just seemed crazy not to send him.”

The aspect that really sold her: “Our older son is one of those kids who just loves to learn, and I thought it would be such a good thing to put him at a place where ‘nerds rock.’ It just seemed like the rock star kids of the school were the chess champions, and I’m not sure that would be the case at a public school. But, overall, these kids really appreciate the fact that everyone has different strengths.”

She also appreciated that the school’s philosophy was not to “teach to the test.”

“The curriculum there is very hands-on and encourages out-of-the-box thinking,” Tachiki says. “But I also suspect that it would be hard to teach this way if you also had to be sure that the students passed standardized tests with flying colors.”

Even so, she still believes strongly in the community’s public school system and fully anticipates returning to the public system for high school. “But then again, I never thought we’d go private for primary school, so I guess you can never say for sure what’s to be.”

The Epstein Family: Not So Similar Twins For some families, the decision to go private is child specific. In fact, here in Marin, it’s not uncommon for families to choose private education for one kid and public for another — there’s really no such thing as “the best school,” but rather the best school for your child.

For Maxine Epstein’s family, that meant enrolling twin daughters Ma’ayan and Adina at high schools that can easily be described as polar opposites. Adina attends San Rafael High, a public school with a highly diverse student body of more than 900 students. Ma’ayan commutes to the city to attend the Jewish Community High School, where she is one of just 165 students.

Until high school, both girls attended Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Rafael. “Ideally, we would have wanted them to be in separate classrooms then, but the school didn’t offer that,” says Epstein. “And at that time, giving them a Jewish education trumped everything else. It offered a value-based, mission-driven framework that also followed the rhythms of the Jewish calendar, which meant our girls were automatically off school for all the Jewish holidays.”

But by the time they were teenagers, it was clear each girl needed something different from school in

order to thrive. “They needed to figure out who they were independent of each other,” Epstein says. For Adina, that meant making connections with teens outside the Jewish community. She wasn’t necessarily set on going to public school, but she wanted a big school environment. “She shadowed at Marin Catholic,” says Epstein, “but decided on San Rafael High because of its strong science program.”

Ma’ayan still wanted a small school environment.

She too toyed with the idea of a secular school, so she applied to and was accepted at the Branson School in Ross. But after much soul-searching, she decided to stick with a faith-based education. “I was really proud of her,” Epstein says, “because she said she felt that JCHS would do a better job of pushing her to be her best self.”

One year in, both girls are blossoming at their chosen schools: “Both are where they need to be,” Epstein says. Still, she’s quick to point out that the downside of public school is it’s easier to get lost in the crowd: “I think developing solid relationships with your teachers is important if you hope to get the most out of your

The Pott Family: Accommodation Aggravation When it came time to place her son Alex in kindergarten, Carol Pott, a mother of two in Larkspur, was not without reservations about enrolling him in public school. She worried there would be too much focus on preparing kids for standardized tests rather than on maximizing critical thinking and intellectual ability.

But she and her children were living in Inverness, and the word on the street was that the public kindergarten was excellent: “It was a tiny school with an exceptionally nurturing program.”

So the following year when they moved to Larkspur, she hoped for more of the same. At first, all seemed well.

Alex made new friends and continued to thrive. But then he began to falter. “His teacher felt he had attention issues and said he was disruptive to the class,” Pott recalls. She wanted him to work with a learning specialist, but being pulled out of the classroom for that embarrassed Alex and caused him a considerable amount of anxiety. “He hated it,” says Pott. “And complained that it made him feel like a weirdo.”

Pott met with school personnel repeatedly and tried to offer suggestions for ways the teacher could help her son within the confines of the classroom. “Instead of them saying, ‘of course, let’s get him what he needs,’ I felt like I was fighting the staff at every turn,” she recalls. While public school is great for some, Pott’s son just wasn’t getting the extra attention he needed.

By fourth grade he was also struggling socially. The stigma of being placed in a special education classroom added to his misery. It was then that she said “enough is enough” and enrolled Alex and his younger sister at Marin Primary and Middle School. “Alex had started public school in Larkspur with a decided edge, being well ahead of his grade level academically, and left after fourth grade feeling ostracized, odd and struggling to complete work,” says Pott.

At MPMS, Alex’s grades improved immediately, a change Pott attributes to closer supervision and a more progressive curriculum. “There were 24 kids and two teachers, whereas his old school had 27 kids and one teacher,” she notes. “They were happy to make accommodations for him, but really, they didn’t have to do much because the teaching methods already in place made such a huge difference.” Making friends took a little longer. “It was hard to be the new kid at first,” says Pott. “But once he found a group of boys he liked, the social stuff got better too.”

Alex returned to the public schools for high school.

His freshman year went relatively well. But when things once again got rocky, Pott approached the district to ask for accommodations. Again, her request fell upon deaf ears. “It’s clear he could benefit from being back in a smaller environment,” says Pott. At press time, Pott was firming up plans to send Alex to a boarding school in Utah, where she hopes he will again begin to thrive. m

Change Is in the Air

Big shifts are happening at many Marin private schools.

Here are some particulars: • Saint Mark’s School in San Rafael officially changed its name to Mark Day School. The new name better reflects the school’s nonsectarian curriculum.

• Starting in fall 2015, San Domenico School in San Anselmo will transition from an all-girls high school to a coed campus.

• Marin Primary and Middle School in Larkspur recently completed renovations of its outdoor space, adding all-new playground equipment, a sports court and an amphitheater.

• Last fall, Fusion Academy, an alternative sixth-through-12th-grade school with more than two dozen locations across the country, opened a campus in San Rafael.

• The San Rafael campus and the San Francisco campus of Brandeis Hillel Day School will officially split into two unaffiliated independent schools. The recently announced change will go into effect fall 2015.
