FY24 in Review

Dear Friends,

We are proud to present this year’s Annual Report reflecting on the incredible impact Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic has made in our community during FY24 We are filled with immense gratitude for everyone who had a hand in the tremendous work we did this year – thank you for being wish makers for the hundreds of local kids in our community battling critical illnesses.

This year was extraordinary, and we achieved remarkable milestones that kept our mission to grant the wish of every eligible child at the forefront. Each accomplishment represents a dream fulfilled, a moment of joy, and a family brought together in hope, including:

376 wishes granted, exceeding budget; 56 families received support through the Equity Fund; Exceeded over $2M in in-kind donations for wishes; On-boarded 101 Wish Granting Volunteers, including 31 bilingual volunteers; Held a record-breaking Wish Ball, raising over $1.5M; Launched our Wish Alumni Program; Celebrated 100% participation in giving from our Board of Directors; Formed partnerships with countless new organizations and companies to spread awareness and raise crucial funds.

These achievements, to only name a few, reflect not only our collective dedication but also the passion and commitment that define our organization.

To our generous donors: your support has been nothing short of transformative. You empowered us to dream bigger, reach further, and create lasting change. We are deeply appreciative of your trust and belief in our mission Your partnership is a cornerstone of our success, and we are profoundly grateful for your commitment to helping us achieve our goal to grant the wish of every eligible child in Maryland, D.C. and northern Virginia.

At the core of our work is one simple truth: wishes begin with hope and hope begins with you. Here’s to continuing our impactful work in the coming year.

With heartfelt gratitude, Lesli Creedon

About our FinancialsPerry Hollowell

I am pleased to report that FY24 was a strong financial year for Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, with results exceeding our expectations. We finished the fiscal year ahead of budget while meeting and, in many areas, surpassing our goals. Our focus remained on driving revenue growth and controlling expenses as we continue to work toward granting the wish of every eligible child at the moment they need it most.

Our financial results for FY24 reflect this strategic focus:

Total Public Support and Revenue reached $7.861 million, $1.347 million or 21% above budget, driven by the success of internal events, grants, investment income, and in-kind support. We granted 376 wishes, which was 9.3% above budget, even as we managed wish expenses in an inflationary environment and with the return of more costly cruise wishes. We remain committed to ensuring that each child’s wish is fulfilled with care and attention to detail

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of our first-ever endowment last fiscal year, made possible by the generosity of our founding donor, Cathy Bernard Her vision and commitment to our mission have laid the foundation for a sustainable future, ensuring that we can continue to grant lifechanging wishes for children facing critical illnesses for years to come This endowment marks a significant milestone in our organization’s history, providing long-term financial stability and enabling us to expand our reach, impact, and ability to transform lives

Our investments this year were intentional and aligned with our mission We made planned investments in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives, expanded marketing efforts, strengthened alumni relations, and focused on staff retention to build a solid foundation for the future

Our net deficit of ($772k) was far less than our budgeted deficit of ($1 645 million) with revenue above budget and expenses below budget The deficit budget was intentional, and approved by our board, as we drew down funds from two significant bequests received in FY22 that were restricted to supporting wishes for children residing in Maryland and Virginia, thus providing funding for future years

Looking ahead, we are confident in our revenue growth plan, which will allow us to close the budget gap within the next three years and to continue fulfilling our mission to grant life-changing wishes to every eligible child With careful management of our wish pipeline and a strong financial outlook, we are wellpositioned to build on this year’s success and bring even more hope, strength, and joy to the children and families we serve

Thank you for your continued support of Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic and for helping us make a lasting impact in our community

Sincerely,

“I wish to go to Walt Disney World Resort.”

Building a Better FutureCathy Bernard

Wishes provide profound strength, hope, and joy for children battling critical illnesses, offering a reprieve in their lives during incredibly challenging times For Cathy Bernard, ensuring that every eligible child in the MidAtlantic region has the opportunity to experience the magic and wonder of a wish is a commitment of the highest importance. Cathy has been a dedicated donor to Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic for over twenty years, during which she has witnessed firsthand the remarkable impact that wishes have on the lives of children and their families.

She understands that these wishes are not just moments of joy; they are transformative experiences that bring smiles, laughter, and a sense of normalcy to children who often miss out on many aspects of their childhood due to their complex medical conditions. Wishes allow kids a moment in time to just be kids as their dreams become reality. Cathy’s deep appreciation for the power of a wish is rooted in her personal observations of how such experiences can significantly influence a child’s medical journey and overall well-being. Having attended wish reveals and seen a child’s one true wish come to life, Cathy has been witness to the absolute magic of a wish.

As a long-term philanthropist, Cathy’s generosity and compassionate nature have left an indelible mark on Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. Her commitment reached a historic milestone when she established the organization’s first-ever endowment in December 2022 with a sevenfigure leadership gift This extraordinary contribution reflects Cathy’s sophisticated understanding of philanthropy and business. Her gift is not just a substantial financial donation but a sustaining investment that ensures the stability and longevity of Make-A-Wish MidAtlantic’s mission. It provides unrestricted annual income that will support the organization for years to come, allowing it to continue granting wishes and making a difference in the lives of local children. For Cathy, giving people hope and letting them know they are not alone is her top priority She has seen many friends and loved ones go through serious illnesses and profoundly believes in the power of hope. By investing in the future and financial health of Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, Cathy’s generosity and utter belief in the mission stands the test of time.

Cathy Bernard’s monumental gift is a testament to her unwavering dedication to the cause and her belief in the importance of bringing hope and strength to children It serves as a promise to the children in our community, both now and in the future, affirming that their happiness and dreams are valued.

Supporting Equity for Wish Kids-

Jeff Baker

For Jeff Baker, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic addresses a critical need by offering hope and strength to children facing fear and uncertainty. A loyal supporter for many years, Jeff’s commitment to philanthropy extends beyond Make-A-Wish Having dedicated his career to financial assistance programs within higher education, Jeff believes strongly in providing underserved and underrepresented populations with every chance to succeed. His longstanding support for the United Negro College Fund has provided scholarships to 40 young men, enabling them to attend and graduate from college.

Jeff's involvement with Make-A-Wish is deeply personal, inspired by his late wife, Marilyn Throughout her battle with aggressive breast cancer, Marilyn was profoundly moved by the struggles of children facing similar challenges. Her empathy and wish for these children to find moments of joy amidst their difficulties motivated Jeff to establish the Equity Fund in her memory. With an initial donation of $150,000, Jeff's generosity enables Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic to provide additional support to families encountering socio-economic or language barriers that are obstacles to the realization of their child’s one true wish

In FY24, the Equity Fund made a significant impact, supporting 56 families with needs such as covering lost wages so parents could attend their child's wish, making home modifications for medical reasons, and providing essential travel resources. The Equity Fund ensures that each eligible child’s wish is not only fulfilled but becomes a transformative and magical experience, overcoming the challenges that extend beyond their medical conditions Through his support, Jeff continues Marilyn’s legacy of compassion, bringing hope and comfort to families in need.

Making Travel Wishes A RealityHilton

Over the past fiscal year, Hilton made a significant impact on the lives of wish children and their families by donating 15 million Hilton Honors points to Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. This generous contribution enabled us to grant 39 travel wishes, addressing the backlog of children waiting for experiences, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.

“At Hilton, we were founded on the bold vision to fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality. More than 100 years later, that vision continues to guide us as we work to make a difference in the communities where we live, work and travel. It is why we are proud to partner with Make-A-Wish, a partnership that allows us to bring hope, strength, and joy to countless children and their families. Together, we have donated millions of Hilton Honors points to create unforgettable stays for wish kids and turn their dreams into reality.” Laura Fuentes, Hilton Executive Vice President

The impact of Hilton’s support was felt far and wide, allowing families to embrace experiences they had longed for, especially after the challenging times brought on by the pandemic Thanks to Hilton, one young adventurer journeyed to the breathtaking shores of Hawaii, where they explored Kualoa Ranch an iconic location that brought the magic of the Jurassic World movies to life. For another wish child, a trip to Cancun became a poignant reunion, where he met his grandfather for the very first time, a moment filled with love and connection. In Tulum, yet another wish family soaked in the beauty of Mexico’s stunning beaches, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Since this partnership’s beginning in 2020, Hilton has played a vital role in our mission. Over the past four years, we have granted 86 wishes together, with total financial contributions reaching $518,099. This includes $91,174 in in-kind support just this year, underscoring Hilton’s commitment to making these experiences possible.

Looking ahead, we are preparing to grant 18 travel wishes for Spring and Summer 2025, including several international trips. Each wish represents not just a moment of joy, but an opportunity for families to connect and heal. Through this exceptional partnership, and thanks to Hilton’s incredible generosity, we are positively transforming the lives of children and families, one wish at a time.

Kal-El Becomes an Honorary Clemson Tiger

KAL-EL FROM ANDREW, MARYLAND, is a die-hard Clemson football fan. Despite having a heart condition, 17-year-old Kal-El has a sunny disposition and finds joy in spending time with his family. According to his mom, Kal-El talks about Clemson all day every day. When Kal-El met with his wish granting volunteers, he was even sporting a Clemson shirt. Early in the conversation with the representatives from Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, it became clear what Kal-El’s wish was: Kal-El wished to have a Clemson Football Experience and become an honorary Clemson Tiger!

Kal-El’s dream became a reality, when he, his parents, and his younger brother embarked on a journey to South Carolina They were welcomed into the Clemson Football family with open arms and given the ultimate star treatment.

Their weekend itinerary was a Clemson fan’s dream: Kal-El and his family had a tour of the revered Reeves Football Complex (ROC), a team meeting with the coaches and football players, a meet and greet with the football players, and they also had the opportunity to meet with the Clemson Athletics Branding Institute. The cherry on top was when Kal-El had professional photoshoot thanks to Clemson Football and Dabo’s All In Team Foundation. He dressed up in Clemson football gear, posed with a Clemson Football helmet, truly becoming an honorary Clemson Football player.

Kal-El’s Clemson wish was a wellspring of inspiration. He returned home not only as an honorary Tiger, but a beacon of hope, reminding everyone around him that courage and passion can conquer any obstacle. His story serves as a powerful reminder that the Clemson spirit not only lives within the players, but also in the hearts of its most dedicated fans.

Wish Granting Volunteers

Wish Granting Volunteers are at the heart of every wish. Our program of nearly 400 Wish Granting Volunteers, including more than 100 bilingual speakers, has excelled this past year, with the reintroduction of international travel wishes, cruise wishes, and in-person wish discovery interviews and celebrations.

Wish Granters seamlessly adopted new "lead roles" - including scheduling and submitting paperwork or delivering monthly wish boosts and planning celebrations.

In addition to joining local wishes such as shopping sprees, our Wish Granting Volunteers attended trainings to ensure they are up to date with policies and are ready to support wish families of every background.

Our volunteers enrich the lives of countless wish families, and their work continues to be an incredibly meaningful and impactful part of our organization.

Wish Reveals

Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic hosted several wish reveals for wish families and their communities, including Jamison’s wish to have an outdoor covered sports court.

13-year-old Jamison from Potomac, Maryland, loves to play outside with her three brothers, but her backyard posed a challenge as the uneven ground was not ideal for navigating her bike or wheelchair, and her sensitivity to the sun requires her to be in the shade when outside at all times.

Thanks to the support of Van Metre, Jamison’s wish became a reality, allowing her the freedom to play and explore, both on her bike and in her wheelchair, on a smooth and safe surface.

Jamison’s wish reve was a wonderful tim for her friends and family to celebrate wish being granted know her wish will Jamison and her fam to create memories years to come.

With nearly 100 passionate student Wishmakers per year, the entire school community comes together each year to raise money for wishes granted to children in Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia.

This year, they celebrated their efforts by inviting wish kid Aiylah to be the honorary captain at a lacrosse game, making it an unforgettable moment for everyone involved. To date, Severna Park High School has raised nearly $200,000, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to making wishes come true.

Kaleb’s Purple Party

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD KALEB from Owings Mills, Maryland, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in December 2022. His love for board games, the color purple, and his favorite two stuffed animal dogs KJ and Pumpernickel remained constant throughout his treatment. When it came time to choose a wish, Kaleb embraced his favorite color and decided that he wanted a purple-themed party with his entire family.

Wish-granting volunteers and staff from Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic organized a spectacular PURPLE PARTY for Kaleb and his family. His hospital room was decorated with all things purple, including streamers, stuffed animals, poster signs, and balloons. A friendly golden retriever therapy dog even made an appearance, putting a smile on everyone’s faces.

Perhaps the most exciting part of Kaleb’s PURPLE PARTY was when he received a life size version of Operation, his favorite board game

Kaleb’s PURPLE PARTY served as a beacon of light, even if only for an afternoon, for him and his family. Their memories of that day will carry forth for a lifetime, serving as a sweet reminder of the importance of strength hope and joy Kaleb lo
