35 Years of Wishes A

s we celebrate another extraordinary year of granting wishes, we also pause to recognize an important milestone in our organization: 35 years of imagination made real for our keiki. Founded in 1982, our chapter has since granted more than 15,000 life-changing wishes to children battling critical illnesses. From the lasting smiles and endless laughter of a family reunited to the magic of a space to finally call one’s own, our dedicated staff, volunteers and community have made unforgettable wishes come true, harnessing the power of imagination to benefit children across Hawaii. When you hear about a wish that’s been granted, it’s easy to focus on a single moment—to smile at the photos of a child beaming as he meets his Chicago Bulls hero or embraces her favorite character. But those cherished moments are only snapshots of something much larger. Our mission extends beyond one day or one moment, instead delivering hope that is transforming lives. Watching a wish kid’s journey unfold—from the anticipation and planning to the experience and the memories—shows just how life-changing a wish can be. And our families and medical partners can attest to the power of a wish; wishes are good medicine. Over the past 35 years, our vision of granting wishes to every eligible child has remained constant. And as we reflect on our legacy thus far, we are humbled by the support that has made fulfilling our mission possible. We are eager to see where the next 35 years will take us, and we are grateful to be on this journey together in support of our keiki and their ohana. Warmest wishes and sincerest thanks,

The Man Who Started It All Jack Stanford’s longstanding legacy continues to inspire hope and strength

s we celebrate 35 years of wishes come true at Make-A-Wish® Hawaii, we are forever grateful to the man who started it all: Jack Stanford. We are deeply saddened by Jack’s recent passing, but as we reflect on his life and the enormous impact he had on our community, we are honored to continue his important work. Jack Stanford’s legacy is one of great compassion, dedicated service and visionary leadership. From his service in the United States Navy to his later philanthropic work, Jack possessed a lifelong desire to give back to the community. In 1982, Jack established Make-A-Wish Hawaii to host wish children visiting Hawaii. Jack ran the nonprofit out of his insurance office on Merchant Street, recruiting other local business leaders to help him get the organization up and running. Influential community leaders like Robert Holden, Walter Dods, Dr. Henry Yim, Dr. Robert Wilkinson and Dr. David Maybee were among the early board members who helped bring Jack’s vision to life. Together, they fulfilled every aspect of wish granting, meeting families at the airport, hosting them in their homes and giving them personal tours of the island. It wasn’t until 1984 that Make-A-Wish Hawaii granted our first local wish to a 10-year-old Hilo boy who wished to go to Disneyland. This was the start

of something truly life-changing in our community and beyond. Since then, we’ve granted wishes to more than 15,000 local and visiting wish kids and their families and are among the busiest Make-AWish chapters in the nation. In addition to his impact on keiki in Hawaii, Jack was instrumental in the development of Make-AWish America. “Jack asked nothing for himself and everything for Make-A-Wish,” said Pat Clemency, who served with Jack on the National Board. “He was our leader, our mentor, our friend, and [he] challenged and inspired others to join us in this cause.” Even as he served as President of the National Board and beyond, Jack continued to support the Hawaii chapter, inspiring new leaders like former Executive Director Lyn Brown and current President and CEO Siana Hunt. “Jack Stanford’s legacy will continue to inspire hope and strength across the globe for years to come,” said Hunt. “In Hawaii alone, he has forever changed the lives of more than 15,000 wish kids, their families and each volunteer and community member that’s ever been part of a wish come true. We will continue to honor his memory by carrying on the work he loved so much and continuing to transform the lives of children with critical illnesses.”

Emily Bott—Maui’s Dedicated Make-A-Wish® Hawaii Volunteer

“Joy is Always E

” the Goal

mily Bott is not your ordinary 95 year old. As a dedicated Make-A-Wish Hawaii volunteer, Emily has been granting wishes for Hawaii’s children for more than 20 years. She is also one of the longest-serving volunteers across the Make-A-Wish organization worldwide.

Over her years of service, Emily has granted countless wishes to children on her home island of Maui. In fact, she has been presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for being the backbone of Make-A-Wish Hawaii on the Valley Isle. “Volunteering for Make-A-Wish is a great way to give back to the community,” said Emily. Her willingness to give back for so long demonstrates her truly kind and generous heart. “It is so rewarding to bring joy to a family in need. Whether it’s electronics, meeting a celebrity, visiting Disney World, or going on an Alaskan fishing trip, it’s fulfilling a dream for a youngster who doesn’t have much control over their current situation,” she said, describing how her role at

Make-A-Wish has satisfied her desire to help others.

As a seasoned wish granter, Emily knows exactly how to make a child’s wish special. Her most memorable wish granting experience illustrates her connection to the foundation and our purpose. “It’s hard to pick just one, but in 1992, I had to switch wishes at the last minute. A little boy with leukemia, scheduled to go to Disneyland, became too ill. With a lot of help, he became a local fireman for the day, complete with a helicopter tour, a ride on a big engine, his own fire hat and shirt, a Dalmatian puppy, and a slide down the firehouse pole. Sadly, he passed away the following week. He was buried in his fire shirt, and his hat was on top of the coffin. I’ll never forget that,” shared Emily. Truly one of Make-A-Wish Hawaii’s living treasures, Emily helped bring the community together to ensure that a child got his wish. “Potential volunteers, I warn you that you will be so flooded with gratitude from the families that you will feel guilty. How often do you get a chance to help a child grab a star?” exclaimed Emily.

A Wish Touches the

Whole Ohana S

hore’s family has always been close, sharing a deep appreciation for nature reflected in their unique names; two of Shore’s four siblings are named Sunny-Ray and Season-Rise. Aptly named herself, Shore loves the sea, and surfing is her favorite hobby. Given her adventurous spirit, it’s no surprise that Shore always hoped to see one part of nature hard to come by in Hawaii: snow. When 8-year-old Shore was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, her mom Jazmin knew the family would face a unique and difficult battle. Shore held onto her wish of seeing snow for the first time, but her current reality became radiation treatments and chemotherapy. In the heaviness of the family’s worry, Shore’s wish provided the hope and the encouragement they needed to fight her cancer. Jazmin said when her daughter heard the news her wish was coming true, it became a warm light that eased her family’s worries. To mark the event, Shore’s family shaved their heads, letting the world know they would get through this together. Shore and her family were whisked off to a winter wonderland in Utah where they enjoyed snowboarding lessons and a tour of the famous ice castles. “It was a healing moment for us as a family to be able to use cancer as a way to experience positive things,” said Jazmin. “Thanks to Make-A-Wish, Shore was given wings in the form of a wish…it’s amazing to see her fly.” We have a simple yet important mission at Make-A-Wish Hawaii: to create life-changing wishes for our keiki with critical illnesses. Wishes bring families closer together and spark hope for a better future. For Shore, her wish signaled a new beginning and a chance to make more memories with her family.

“Make-A-Wish is like an angel that gives you wings in the form of a wish. It’s amazing to see your child fly.” –Jazmin, Wish mom

Discovering the

Rainbow State

ix-year-old Markella from Alaska suffers from a mitochondrial metabolism disorder that often leaves her feeling weak. But her illness doesn’t stop her from finding magic everywhere she looks. “She’s a pretty magical kid, and she really enjoys getting the most out of everything in life. A leaf is magical to her. A flower is magical to her,” explained wish mom Carmen. For her wish, Markella wanted to come to Hawaii to see the Rainbow Eucalyptus Tree.

With the help of our local community, Markella experienced a special treasure hunt through Foster Botanical Gardens where she discovered an enchanted fairy wand and flower crown. We all watched in awe as her magical world came to life right before our eyes.

I wish to go to Hawaii to see rainbow trees Markella, 6, Alaska metabolic disorder

Volunteers, park staff and the community were touched by Markella and her wish. “While millions upon millions of visitors grace our shores every year, it sometimes takes a special person like you to see the magic in our amazing plant life,” Nate Serota, spokesman for the city Department of Parks and Recreation, told Markella. “She had her healthiest year last year, and I really think that was the anticipation of all this. There’s a lot to that,” Carmen shared.

t just 4 years old, Beretta’s bubbly personality fills up any room. And just like any other 4 year old, she loves arts and crafts, puppies and playing outside. Growing up in Captain Cook on the Big Island, Beretta has a fondness for the outdoors. However, being born with a serious congenital heart defect has restricted her from going to parks and playing with other kids, as she gets ill very easily. Beretta would constantly ask to go on swings and slides, and, with a heavy heart, her grandmother would have to say no.

A Wish Built by a Commun When Beretta’s wish granters knocked on her door and asked what her most heartfelt wish would be, there was not an ounce of hesitation – Beretta wanted a backyard playset of her very own! She closed her eyes and pictured her dream playset and requested a swing, slide, climbing wall and a special place where she could sit and create art. From the day her wish was determined to the second the last bolt was screwed into her playset, Beretta was filled with pure joy. Thanks to the incredible Make-A-Wish Hawaii community on Hawaii Island and Home Depot in Hilo, we were able to turn her dreams into a reality! The volunteers spent an entire weekend putting together an incredible playset for Beretta where she can finally play and create without her family having to worry about her becoming ill. This playset will allow Beretta’s family members near and far to come visit her and play in her backyard. More than a playset, it will be a new gathering place for all the people she loves to come visit and share in her joy.

I wish to have a backyard play set Beretta, 4, Honokaa heart condition

My Life Now Wish Kid Reece

he moment you meet 18-year-old Reece, you know he’s destined to do great things. A senior at Hawaii Baptist Academy who excels at biology, Reece plans to become a nurse. Though he’s only 18, he can already explain complex biological concepts with articulate, medical precision. Reece’s intelligence is certainly enough to make him a successful nurse, but even more important is his heart. And his desire to help others as his life’s work stems from his own experience with illness. As Reece beams about his future and his recent acceptance to Chaminade University Nursing Program, it’s hard to picture him on the other side of the medical equation as a patient. But eight years ago, Reece endured an unthinkable battle with cancer. He was just 10 years old when a routine MRI for his diabetes showed something unusual. The doctors explained to Reece and his family that he had a cancerous brain tumor. Amid the tiring rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, Reece was not feeling himself. A self-described “bright and peppy” kid, Reece suddenly lost his childlike spirit and energy. “I was very gloomy. I didn’t want to talk. I was pretty much depressed because I didn’t believe this was happening to me,” explains Reece. When a family friend suggested Make-A-Wish, Reece began to feel hopeful again. “When I heard about Make-A-Wish, my whole frame of mind shifted from ‘Oh, I’m sick’ to ‘What can I do? What can I wish for?’” he reflects. He jokes now that one of his initial thoughts was, “‘Can I get unlimited ice cream?’” Eventually, Reece decided on something even better—a trip to Disney World to have fun with his family. When Reece returned from his wish, something was decidedly different. “The cancer had gotten us all worried, but the wish relieved all the tension in our lives,” explains Reece. “The wish was a lifesaver. Without me having a wish, I don’t think I would be here today like this.” Inspired by the mission, Reece decided to get involved. He first participated in the Macy’s letter-writing campaign, raising $14,000 for fellow keiki. He also appeared at fundraising events like Jingle Rock Run and gave interviews for local television and news stories. Reece has been cancer-free for eight years now, but his experiences continue to motivate him in service of others. “Don’t focus on what you have right now,” he advises other wish kids. “Just focus on the future and what you could have.”

Of course, our most important thank you is to our wish families. Your strength and resilience in the face of unthinkable obstacles never cease to inspire us.

VISION FOR THE NEXT 35 With so many unique, magical wishes granted so far, our vision for the next 35 years is to extend the same life-changing power of a wish to every eligible child in the state of Hawaii, building our sustainability and touching every island community.

ashion enthusiast and aspiring model Kayla is an energetic, stylish teenager with big dreams. At the age of 14, she endured a sudden double cardiac arrest. Fortunately, doctors were able to stabilize her with a cardiac implant. Throughout her ordeal, Kayla never wavered in her wish to become a model. Make-A-Wish Hawaii flew her to New York City, where she had the opportunity to build a portfolio with celebrity photographer Indrani. “I’m really encouraged to be a model now that I’ve experienced it,” says Kayla. “I want to thank Make-AWish, my family and God for this experience.”
