Aloha Wish ‘Ohana, When a child is diagnosed with a critical illness, everything suddenly changes.

Friends are made at the hospital instead of at school. Ballet recitals, field trips, and play dates are traded for medical appointments, treatments, and surgeries, and the entire family must learn to navigate a new normal. For many keiki, it can become difficult to imagine life beyond the next doctor visit or hospital stay. That’s where the impact of a wish comes in. And it all begins with a spark of imagination—with the seemingly endless possibilities that run through a child’s mind when asked this life-changing question: “What is your one true wish?”

Thanks to you, we were able to turn imagination into reality for 98 keiki across the state of Hawaii this year, the most in our history. From becoming a recording artist to visiting Tokyo, these wishes were as unique as the children who imagined them—and they were only made possible by your gifts of time, talent, treasure, and aloha. In addition to granting wishes for our local keiki, you also helped us welcome a record 1,263 visiting wish children to our islands this year, assisting in wishes for everything from learning to surf to swimming with mermaids.

Imagination is powerful. We see it in the sparkle in a child’s eye when he’s asked about his wish. We see it in the excited planning sessions of our volunteers. We see it in the conference rooms where local companies brainstorm unique ways to raise funds. And after a record-breaking year of wishes come true, we too are harnessing this power of imagination to envision all that we can accomplish together.

Together, we can continue to transform lives, one wish at a time.

Spotlight: INCOMING BOARD CHAIR JEFF HIGASHI As senior vice president at First Hawaiian Bank, it’s no surprise Jeff Higashi cites “analytical” as perhaps his most defining personality trait. Yet as he walks through the wings of the hospital meeting local keiki fighting for their health, Jeff’s other qualities shine through: compassion, humor, and humility. In the eight years Jeff has been involved with Make-A-Wish Hawaii, he has watched the organization grow from granting about 30 local wishes each year to nearly 100. In addition to serving on the board in various capacities, he has advised both the wish granting and finance committees and worked directly with several local families as a volunteer.

When Jeff was appointed Board Chair in the fall of 2019, he was ready for the challenge. He is now tasked with guiding more than 40 Board and Young Leaders Board colleagues, nearly 30 staff, and over 700 volunteers statewide in our vision to grant life-changing wishes to every eligible child in Hawaii.

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children has also long been recognized as a valued provider

by Make-A-Wish America for its partnership in the care of traveling wish children to our islands. Nearly 1,300 children travel to Hawaii each year for their wishes, and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children is prepared to offer assistance and medical attention to these children should the need arise while they are on their wish. In October 2019, leaders from our local chapter attended the Make-AWish America Annual Leadership Conference in Arizona, where representatives from all 60 chapters gather to discuss best practices and innovation. This year, the Hawaii chapter was honored to accept the Make-A-Wish Healthcare Partner Engagement Award on behalf of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

fter a long Friday shift as an in-home nurse, Make-A-Wish Hawaii volunteer Talia Osurman, toting mini donuts to share, meets a former wish family at Magic Island. She loves the opportunity to watch the fireworks and catch up with 17-year-old Honolulu wish kid Luke. Talia helped grant Luke’s wish to go to Walt Disney World® almost two years ago, but that doesn’t stop her from regularly visiting him and his family.

Since 2013, Talia has been instrumental in directly changing the lives of 41 children like Luke on the island of Oahu. Partnering with several other volunteers through Make-A-Wish Hawaii, Talia does more than grant wishes; she gets to know each and every family member, spends time with them, and pays special attention to their interests—even remembering all of their birthdays.

Talia’s kind and generous spirit creates a permanent bond between her and wish families, making cherished memories that last long after the wish. Luke’s dad, David, was taken aback by Talia and fellow wish granter Ja’s efforts. “Without a doubt the most unexpected experience was the aloha given us by Ja’ and Talia,” he says. “They really have become members of our family.”

During the wish journey, there are many opportunities for wish granters like Talia to create these bonds, but one of the most memorable is when they plan a special wish reveal to announce that a child’s wish is coming true. For example, when wish kid Dyllan, who suffers from a nervous system disorder, wished to meet James Harden of the Houston Rockets, Talia planned a particularly meaningful wish reveal, complete with Rockets hats, basketballs, shirts, lanyards, and cake. Says Dyllan’s family, “Talia is special because she goes above and beyond even including the siblings and parents; she would stop by on everyone’s birthdays and help us celebrate!”

Another of Talia’s former wish kids, Ella, says, “We [still] hang out all the time. We go eat Thai food together, we get our nails done, and we even go to the trampoline park together.” Ella has found a lifelong friend in Talia, who helped grant her wish to experience the attractions at Walt Disney World almost two years ago.

While Talia is incredibly humble, volunteers like her are crucial to fulfilling our mission of making life-changing wishes come true for children with critical illnesses. Each volunteer changes lives in his or her own unique way through the journey of a wish. From making unicorn slime with Ella and dueling light sabers with Luke to texting Dyllan when his favorite team is in town, Talia’s special touch is in going “above and beyond,” as we often hear from her wish families.

Luke’s mom Edna summed it up best: “Talia has been there from the beginning. Every moment spent with her is special, and she has become part of the family.”

ach year, First American Title President and State Manager Patsy Saiki, Executive Assistant Maya Harada, and their team of 79 employees give back to our Hawaii community by selecting a local organization to support. “We see how we can make a difference in someone’s life—in a whole family’s lives,” says Maya. This year, the team raised an impressive $10,000 to make a difference in the life of Maui wish kid Paige and her family.

Battling leukemia, 9-year-old Paige escapes the realities of her illness through dance and song. Whenever Paige is feeling down and confined to her hospital room, her parents will turn on the soundtrack to her favorite movie, Frozen. Paige’s mood instantly changes, and a smile spreads across her face as she dances and sings along with Elsa. In the midst of trips to Oahu for treatment, she dreamed of instead boarding a plane for Florida to meet Elsa in person at Walt Disney World®.

When Patsy and Maya heard about Paige’s story, they knew their team could turn that dream into reality with a little determination. They soon kicked off a monthslong campaign featuring a number of creative fundraisers, including plate lunches, a silent auction, and even an ice cream party with seasonal flavors shipped all the way from the mainland. And, First American Title generously matched their employees’ efforts dollar-for-dollar, resulting in a $10,000 gift to Make-A-Wish Hawaii—enough to grant Paige’s wish this fall.

“Being able to meet Paige and talk with her parents, you really get the feel of everything they go through. You still see them enjoy life as much as possible,” says Maya. “To see that we can actually make their day even brighter…to do that for someone makes us so happy.”

The wish experience was truly life-changing for Paige and her family. “While on the trip, Paige was so active and happy. Our family noticed how much of an effect it had on her,” says wish dad Jordan. “The wish is something we will always cherish and remember. We can’t repay the kindness you’ve shown, but we can try.”

Angelica was born with a heart condition that threatened her life immediately. Doctors cautioned her parents Reena and Matthew that she may not survive. But Angelica did survive. And she fought her way through surgeries, hospital stays, and the pain of not being able to participate in the sports and activities her friends could. Angelica had always loved singing, calling it “the most amazing thing I could do in life.” She soon began to turn to music as an outlet for her emotions and dreamed of channeling her story into song to inspire others fighting similar battles.

As 18-year-old Angelica sat in the recording studio listening to the heartfelt lyrics she had written come to life, she couldn’t quite believe this moment was real. It had been a long time coming—the culmination of nearly 20 years battling a critical illness and a life-changing wish that allowed her to translate this journey into music.

It didn’t take long for Angelica to decide her one true wish: to become a recording artist. Along her wish journey, she agreed to perform at our 8th annual gala, WISH! In an Enchanted Garden, where she sang for over 700 guests before learning her wish to write and record her own song would be coming true.

Soon, she was in the studio with local recording artist and producer Imua Garza setting pen to paper to turn her story into song. Angelica titled the finished piece “Make a wish” and debuted the single with a live performance at our Wine for Wishes event. As the evening’s star celebrity, she even signed copies of her new CD—the cover featuring a heart to symbolize her condition and how far she’d come.

Says Angelica, “My favorite thing about music is that there is a story behind each song. My song, and my story, is about never giving up, even when you are at your lowest.”

n Memorial Day, flags are flown across America as people pay their respects to those who lost their lives serving our country. In Hawaii, remembrance takes a different form; Memorial Day traditions take place at sunset, when the stretch of ocean at Ala Moana Beach Park twinkles with paper lanterns sent to sea with messages for loved ones.

More than 50,000 people journey from around the world to the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony, remembering those who have served and others who have passed away. One of those floating a lantern this year was Florida wish kid Brendan, who attended the ceremony to remember his late service dog Nani.

Nani had been by Brendan’s side as he endured treatment after treatment related to his blood disorder. From swimming at the beach and playing in the pool to watching funny dog videos, the two did everything together. When Brendan needed her, Nani was there—and when Nani was diagnosed with cancer and needed Brendan, he was there for her. After Nani passed away, Brendan was devastated but determined to give her a proper goodbye. He eventually came upon the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony. Brendan knew this was the opportunity he was looking for and made his one true wish to attend.

Decorating his lantern with photos of Nani and an illustration of the two, Brendan also penned a message: “Nani, you are the best dog I could ever ask for.” He draped his lantern with a lei, waded into the waves and gently guided it to sea. It was only fitting they spent one last time in the water, one of their favorite places to be together. After the ceremony, Brendan told his family, “I could never do anything more amazing than this.”

BECOMES REALITY For Darcy Fiero, photography isn’t, and shouldn’t be, work. Instead, it’s an opportunity to be creative—to capture the beauty she sees around her and convey her emotions to others in a meaningful way. “I love it,” she says. “That’s why I’m very careful about where I dedicate my photography moments.”

And she’s gone to great lengths to capture the essence of each wish and the purpose of our mission. In addition to wading into the waves at Ala Moana Beach Park with her camera in hand for Brendan’s wish, she’s grasped onto the back of a motorcycle with one hand and shot with another as thousands of supporters poured over the starting line at the annual Jingle Rock Run fundraiser, and she’s even trekked Mauna Kea for perhaps her most meaningful sunset shoot yet—with a wish kid who’d traveled across the world to see it for himself.

When she’s not shooting landscapes and sunsets, Darcy devotes her time to volunteer work. Over the past five years, Darcy has left an indelible mark on our organization, capturing the moments when imagination turns into reality for wish kids like Brendan. She has photographed iconic images of wish kids catching waves with Bethany Hamilton in Hanalei Bay, the Honolulu Police Department swearing 5-year-old Daidap in as their newest officer, and 15-year-old Kaimana finding peace on the water in his very own outrigger canoe.

hough she uses a walker, 10-year-old Hilo wish kid Camryn doesn’t let her nervous system disorder hold her back. Full of energy, she is always challenging herself by making obstacle courses, watching herself practice standing up in the mirror, and scooting around the house. “I know if she could walk, she’d be running circles around us,” says wish dad Duane.

Camryn’s progress has impressed her family and medical team since the very beginning. After suffering a brain bleed before birth, Camryn underwent two MRIs and numerous tests within weeks after she was born. At just 6 months old, she endured her first seizure—and another just six months later. After years of surgeries, tests, and fluctuations in the number of seizures she endures— at one point, up to 30 per day—Camryn continues to push through her illness with strength and resilience.

Much of her progress can be attributed to her incredible support system, including her parents, grandparents, sisters, doctors, therapists and teachers. At school, Camryn follows a tailored plan to help her develop her motor and communication skills. Her parents dreamed of giving her a custom sensory room at home where she could continue to learn, play, and grow surrounded by family.

And with the help of Philpotts Interiors, a Honolulubased luxury interior design firm, Camryn’s wish came true. After meeting with the family, they set to work sketching, soliciting donations of goods and services, and picking out fabrics, equipment, and furniture—all chosen with Camryn’s unique needs and style in mind. Two days before the big reveal, Duane explained his anticipation: “I think we’re going to have some tears. This will be a gift she can grow with and that everyone can enjoy.”

Grinning from ear to ear, Camryn immediately began exploring the room and playing with her family. And according to wish mom Jessica, each day since has been a new adventure and a poignant reminder of a wish that made the family’s “hearts overflow with happiness.”

“Her sensory room is the first place she goes when she comes home from school, and she always has the biggest smile on her face when she’s in there,” she says.

“We just love how happy it makes her.”

or children battling illness, reality can be frightening and uncertain. Countless questions run through their minds: “How much longer do I have to stay in the hospital? How many more rounds of treatment do I have? What will my friends think?” The possibility of a wish changes this narrative, sparking imagination and allowing children instead to wonder, “What can I be? What should I do? What will I wish for, and what will tomorrow bring?”

This year, you helped us answer these questions in truly transformative ways for a record-breaking 1,361 local and visiting wish children. Because of your time, talent, and support, these resilient, deserving children danced with princesses, looked up with wide-eyed innocence as they discovered unicorns, realized their dreams of swimming in the Great Barrier Reef, and so much more. Instead of focusing on their next appointment or surgery, they harnessed the power of a wish to imagine life beyond illness and to fight another day.

As magical as turning imagination into reality is for our wish kids, wishes themselves aren’t magic. They take people, time, and resources to grant. We truly could not have fulfilled these wishes without you and your imagination—of the ways you could help and the difference you could make. As we move into another year of life-changing wishes come true, we hope that you’ll continue to imagine with us and to believe that together, we can transform even more lives, one wish at a time.
