STEP INTO THE STORY AT THE 3 BARONS RENAISSANCE FAIR

Each year, the village of Hillshire springs to life in a vibrant celebration known as the 3 Barons Renaissance Fair, where history, fantasy, and full-throttle entertainment collide. Inspired by the legendary founder Hillthelstan the Bold, this immersive event invites visitors of all ages to step into a living story filled with action, humor, and hands-on adventure.

At the heart of the fair is a spirited rivalry: the Red, Green, and Blue Barons compete daily for honor and the coveted Spear of Hillthelstan. Guests don’t just watch, they participate, casting votes with wooden tokens to help decide which Baron claims victory. It’s interactive, energetic, and uniquely engaging.

Entertainment is around every corner. From the clang of steel to bursts of laughter, the fair offers a full day of unforgettable experiences. A live-action “Field of Honor” transforms strategy into spectacle as armored fighters bring battle to life. The lively Crooked Toad Tavern Show delivers music, comedy, and a bit of piratical mischief, geared toward adult audiences.

Visitors can join in traditional peasant dancing, no

experience required, just a willingness to have fun. The crowd-favorite Tomato Show invites audience participation in a messy, comedic performance. The “Circus of the Damned” showcases daring feats and eccentric characters in a high-energy display. A costume contest welcomes all ages, celebrating creativity from historical attire to imaginative cosplay.

Beyond the main stage, Hillshire is a fully realized world waiting to be discovered. Three themed courts offer distinct experiences: the noble Red Court of chivalry, the mysterious Blue Court of magic and spectacle, and the cunning Green Court, where rogues and intrigue reign. Throughout the grounds, roaming performers, musicians, and storytellers ensure that no two visits feel the same.

Families will find plenty to enjoy, from the merchants of mystery and seekers of hidden truths. The Alchemists will dazzle you with clever magics, puppet plays, and peculiar wares, then on to the gentle, pirate-themed Twisted Tadpole area for younger guests, interactive storytelling with our Fools, and hands-on games at the Crimson Dove.

For those seeking a bit of playful mischief, the Gaol, jail, offers free “mug shot” photo opportuni-

ties, though getting out from behind bars may cost you more than a laugh or two. Perhaps someone has caught your eye or your ire! Swift of foot, sharp of tongue, and delightfully nosy, the Messengers’ Guild will deliver your tender love notes, heartfelt kindness, scandalous whispers, or boldly cast down the gauntlet in your name with great theatrical flair.

History enthusiasts can explore the Living History Village, featuring demonstrations of traditional crafts, medieval daily life skills, and even full-contact armored combat. Or make your presence known to the Society for Creative Anachronism, an inclusive group dedicated to bringing the arts, skills, and culture of ages past back to life. Witness their artistry, revel at their combat, and rejoice in their fellowship.

No festival is complete without great food and shopping. With more than 100 vendors, the marketplace offers handcrafted goods, artisan wares, and a wide variety of delicious fare. Whether you’re searching for a unique gift or simply enjoying a meal, there’s something for everyone.

MODEST MOUSE JOINS 2026

ALASKA STATE FAIR CONCERT SERIES Contributed by Alaska State Fair

Modest Mouse, the band behind the hit album Good News for People Who Love Bad News, will perform at the Alaska State Fair Friday, August 28, at 7 PM as part of the 2026 ConocoPhillips Alaska Concert Series. The concert is sponsored in part by 95.5 KNLT-FM Hatcher Pass Radio. Tickets are on sale now at alaskastatefair.org.

The indie rock mainstays began building their devoted following with 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West before breaking into the mainstream with 2004’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News, a multi-platinum release anchored by the hit “Float On” and the gold-certified “Ocean Breathes Salty.” The album led to the band’s two 2005 Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song.

In 2007, the band’s momentum crested again when We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. Their most recent studio album, The Golden Casket, arrived in June 2021, heralding another chapter in the band’s evolution.

Described as one of the most consistent live acts today, the band rolls into 2026 with a full calendar including the Ice Cream Floats Cruise, Bonnaroo and a summer date opening for My Chemical Romance.

Modest Mouse fans can choose between concert-only tickets or tickets including Fair admission, discounted and valid only for the day of the concert.

A LOVE LETTER TO SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK Contributed by Allen J. Stout

story, and connection. In a lot of ways, it’s closer to how the Bard’s own troupe worked: learn the material, come together, rehearse with purpose, and then take it to the people.

That’s exactly what will happen.

After a focused and fast-moving rehearsal process, the cast will take the show out into parks in Palmer throughout the summer. Each performance just a little different. Each shaped by the space, the audience, and whatever the day brings.

MASCOTarts held auditions April 25 at the MASCOTarts Studio for performers ages 16 and up. No Shakespeare experience was required. But this is an actor-driven process. Performers are expected to learn their material, come prepared, and jump in. Rehearsals are streamlined and flexible where possible, but when it’s time to go, it’s time to go. Then the show heads out into the community.

And even if you never step on stage, this still matters.

Because this is the kind of theatre that changes how a community connects to the arts. It reaches people who wouldn’t normally go to a show. It invites families to experience something together. It turns everyday spaces into something just a little more magical.

It reminds us that theatre doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes it just has to be there. Out in the open. Shared. Alive.

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when theatre leaves the building.

Not under stage lights. Not behind velvet curtains.

But out in the open where the breeze might flip a page, where a dog barks in the distance, where a kid laughs in the middle of a scene...and nobody minds.

And here in Alaska? Where the sun just sort of...hangs out all summer? It’s even better. It might be an evening performance in that long golden light. Or a bright afternoon. Or a laid-back weekend morning where people show up with coffee, blankets, and maybe a picnic. However it happens, something shifts. Theatre becomes shared. Immediate. Human.

That’s the heart of Shakespeare in the Park, and this summer MASCOTarts is bringing that experience to the Mat-Su Valley with Much Ado About Nothing.

If you didn’t grow up with Shakespeare in the Park, you’re not alone. It’s not a huge tradition up here, yet.

But across the country, and honestly, across the world, it’s everywhere.

A lot of the modern version traces back to Joseph Papp, who in the 1950s had a simple but powerful idea: what if great theatre was just...free? He started putting on Shakespeare in Central Park: no tickets, no barriers, just show up. People did. In huge numbers.

And from there, the idea spread. Now you’ll find

Shakespeare in parks, green spaces, courtyards, and public gathering spots all over. Some productions are big and polished.

Some, most, are simple and scrappy. But they all share the same core belief: Theatre belongs to everyone.

That’s why people love it. You don’t have to “know” theatre to enjoy it. You don’t have to sit perfectly still.

You can bring your kids, your dinner, your friends. You can show up for ten minutes or stay for the whole thing.

The setting does half the work, and suddenly the story feels closer. More alive.

For us, this isn’t just a concept, it’s personal.

We grew up going to Shakespeare festivals where outdoor performances were just part of the experience. In college, Shakespeare in the Park was cheap, fun entertainment, something you could do on a whim and always enjoy. Later, living in Texas with young kids, outdoor performances became something even more meaningful. We didn’t have to worry about whether our kids could sit still or be the “perfect audience.” We could pack dinner, spread out on the grass, and just enjoy it together. That feeling of ease, accessibility, and sense of community is what we’re bringing here.

This production of Much Ado About Nothing leans all the way into that tradition. It’s not about giant sets or elaborate lighting or fancy costumes. It’s about actors,

Along the way, audiences are in for big laughs, high-energy choreography, and a heartfelt story about friendship, optimism, and working together.

TIME TRAVELER’S SILENT MOVIE CLUB: HELLO, FILMMAKER! Contributed by Carol Dorman

On April 14, 1894, the movie business was born when Thomas Edison opened the very first Peep Show Parlor beside a train station in New York City. The movie pioneers of the 1900s used the most advanced technology of their day to create films that were loved throughout the world. They learned to tell wonderful stories using only live music and the moving image.

The movie industry began on small individual screens. Does that sound familiar? After over a century, we have come full circle, right back to the beginning!

There’s a lot we can learn from history, and although we cannot go back in time like Marty McFly, there

are ways to bring history into focus by following old recipes for success.

Filmmaking is that creative enterprise that requires technical skill, a storytelling sensibility and the ability to show what you mean via behaviors and camera angles. A well-crafted movie communicates best without relying on dialogue because filmmaking is a primarily visual medium.

Carol Dorman, Time Traveler’s B&B, and James Shields, Twin Ravens Tattoo, will be hosting a 6-week filmmaking course for teenagers, aged 13 and up, this coming summer and fall. Students will be conducted into Hollywood’s past, where they will follow the paths of the pioneers and make short comedy films

like the moguls of yesteryear. With an emphasis on film grammar, social influence and plenty of ingenuity, students will be immersed in the culture of America’s pre-war Gilded Age. Carol has a BA in Film Production, certification as a script supervisor from the American Film Institute, and worked as a videographer, editor and actress for 25 years before moving to Alaska. Both James and Carol have hearts for teenagers and an incurable fascination with filmmaking!

Winter may be coming to a close, but custom creations never stop around here.

Now is the perfect time to start thinking ahead. Sure, it’s boat season, bike season, side-by-side season, and truck season, but it’s also the best time to get moving on your sled wraps before the fall rush hits. Every year, I get flooded with wrap orders around October, and September is already packed with travel for Hay Days in the Lower 48. If you wait until the first snowfall to think about your wrap, chances are you’ll be one of many trying to squeeze into an already busy schedule.

Submitting your order now gives us time to create something truly custom without the stress.

And if you’re not even 100% sure what sled you’ll be riding next season yet, that’s okay too. We can start building your design on an assumed template, quote it based on that setup, and make updates before anything ever goes to print once your final whip is confirmed.

One of the questions I get most often is, “What if I don’t know what I want?” Honestly, those are some of my favorite customers to work with. Send me your likes, dislikes, inspiration, favorite colors, riding style, hobbies, vibes, whatever you’ve got, and let me do my thing. Lately, I’ve been closing projects within the first or second draft, and I’m incredibly proud of that. It means the process is smoother, faster, and more dialed in than ever.

Another common question is, “Can I see artwork before paying a deposit?” The short answer is no. I don’t begin drawing without a deposit because my time is limited and valuable. Every project gets real attention and custom work put into it from the start. That being said, every customer receives three full drafts to refine

and finalize their design, and absolutely nothing gets sent to print without your approval. You stay involved throughout the process.

“Do you install wraps?” At this time, I personally don’t have the capacity to install wraps. However, many of my print partners offer installation services, several of my ambassadors do amazing install work, and most wrap kits include DIY instructions for those who want to tackle it themselves.

“What if I know an ambassador for a wrap company?” Perfect, let’s support them while still creating something custom. When submitting your quote request, include their promo code in the notes section. I’m always happy to use ambassador discounts at checkout because it supports their programs while still getting you a one-of-a-kind design.

“What if I’m an artist and want to include my own artwork?” I love doing projects like this. If your artwork is already in true vector format, we’re already halfway there. I can take your artwork and adapt it into a clean, wrapready design that fits your machine perfectly.

If your art exists as paintings, sketches, photography, or another file type, that’s okay too. It may take additional work to convert it into a print-ready asset, but I’ve done it before, and I can’t wait to do it again.

GROWING INTEREST IN SUMO ROBOTICS COMPETITION AT MAT-SU COLLEGE MID-MAY 2026

Mat-Su College welcomed nearly one hundred attendees to its Sumo Robotics Competition at The Glenn Massay Theater, bringing together student talent from across the Mat-Su Valley.

The event featured eleven custom-built robots and twenty participants, most of them from local high schools. These students put their problem-solving skills to the test in head-to-head sumo-style matches.

Among the competitors were two robots from the Mat-Su College Robotics Team. Taking first place was

“Overbite,” designed and built by club member Hunter Cameron. Second place went to “Benny-Net,” created by teammates Boden Parrent and Lincoln Worley. A top high school prize was awarded to Kyler McElvain of Career Tech for his robot, “Window Wiper,” in recognition of outstanding performance among high school competitors.

The competition was judged by Professor Dan Nichols and College Director Marie Gardner. In addition to judging, Nichols assisted participants throughout the event by helping troubleshoot robot malfunctions,

ensuring matches continued with minimal delays.

After the event, he also walked students through MatSu College’s lab, where robots and even rockets are designed and built each year.

With strong attendance and growing interest from local schools, the competition is expected to expand. Events like this not only celebrate student achievement, but also strengthen connections between the college and local high schools, helping inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators.

PARTY WITH RECYCLERS

IN THE MOUNTAINS, SUSTAINABLY OF COURSE Contributed by Lex Kerst Your community recycling center is holding its annual low-waste music festival in the mountains to kick off summer! The 9th Recycle Revival is scheduled for 1 PM to 9 PM Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Skeetawk Ski Area in Hatcher Pass. This event serves as the nonprofit’s only fundraiser of the year and combines live music, local food vendors, sustainability, and community activities in a setting free of single-use plastics.

The festival will feature performances from local acts including Lulu Small & John Cook, The Robotz, Denali Cooks, and the Jerry Wessling Band. Attendees can also expect food trucks, including Flour.ish.ing Pizza, Divine Dips Ice Cream Bars, High Five Hand Pies, and AK Gourmet Dogs, a beer garden, a silent auction, chairlift rides up the mountain, family-friendly activities, and scenic views of Hatcher Pass. Admission is $20, while children 13 and under may attend for free.

Valley Community for Recycling Solutions, commonly known as Valley Recycling, has served the Mat-Su region for just over 28 years as a household recycling collection center and waste reduction nonprofit. Recycle Revival not only raises operational funding but also promotes sustainable practices and encourages community involvement. The event has grown steadily since its early years and has become

a summer kickoff tradition for many Mat-Su residents.

Skeetawk Ski Area, located in Hatcher Pass near Palmer, will once again host the event.

The mountain venue offers outdoor space for music performances and gatherings, a beautiful yurt that will hold the silent auction, and use of the chairlift to catch the sunset. The afternoon winds down into a summer festival atmosphere that immerses you in local entertainment and the environment.

In addition to ticket sales, proceeds from silent auction donations also support Valley Recycling’s year-round outreach programs to schools and community events. This year’s silent auction includes tickets on the Alaska Railroad, local goodie baskets, a bat house, and even an entire chicken coop.

SPIRIT LINES: THE STORY IS LEAVING THE WATER

You might know me from my metal sculptures scattered across Alaska, birds spiraling through public buildings, salmon, whales, and pieces shaped by years spent listening to the natural world.

But before Spirit Lines became a book, it started somewhere else entirely.

Alone on a remote island in Prince William Sound, working in whale research with no cell service, no distractions, and a lot of weather.

Long days on the water.

Long nights listening.

Somewhere in that silence, the story arrived.

Now, after years of writing between field seasons, ocean crossings, and mountain retreats, Spirit Lines: The Great Separation officially launches May 19.

On the surface, it’s a coming-of-age adventure. Underneath, it asks a deeper question: what happens when the line between humans and nature begins to dissolve, and the systems we trust stop making sense?

To honor where the story came from, I recently launched the book underwater in Moloka’i, Hawaii, a humpback whale migration channel. Not as a stunt, but because

returning it to the ocean felt like the only honest way to begin.

As a Wasilla artist, ocean researcher, and the 2026 Creative Ambassador for the Alaska State Council on the Arts, I’ll also be bringing the project into libraries, museums, and community spaces through talks and immersive experiences centered around whale sound, storytelling, and connection to the natural world.

The book is now available for preorder and will officially release on May 19.

OUR SUMMER IN THE PARK(S) PROGRAM Contributed by Alys Culhane This summer, the Bright Lights Book Project’s program focus will be on a summer-long literacy program we’re calling “Summer in the Park(s).” The BLBP will be a visible presence at Bugge and Amoosement Parks, alternating sites Monday through Thursday, June 1 to August 13th from noon to 2 p.m. And on Fridays we’ll be on site adjacent to the Palmer Visitor’s Center Garden area.

Our audience is children of all ages and their parents.

Storytime activities will be followed by team building exercises. Kid’s Kupboard lunches will be available at both sites.

Free books will be available. The alternative rain site will be the former banquet room of the historic Eagle Hotel.

The idea for Summer in the Park(s) came to me one windy winter night, after Palmer Mayor Jim Cooper suggested that we apply for a City of Palmer Community Council Grant. I went to the website and noted that provided funding “recognizes the valued contributions being provided through the volunteer efforts of community champions on behalf of its citizens” and “demonstrate(s) the Council’s commitment to programs, services, projects, and events that are a benefit to the community. . .”

It occurred to me that Bugge and Amoosement Parks were ideal program sites because they are two of Palmer’s greatest assets, two well-known public spaces. Over the past three years, I’d routinely stocked Bugge Park’s (Big) Little Library, a large yellow and purple structure and Amoosement Park’s (Little) little library.

I subsequently did research on Bugge Park and Amoosement Parks and discovered that the former has historical significance. The site was originally homesteaded in 1914 by Norwegian pioneer John Bugge who was part of the first group of homesteaders to arrive in Palmer. The homestead was situated near

the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Palmer-Wasilla Highway, with the area often referred to as “Bugge’s Hill.”

Bugge intended to donate a portion of his land to the Territory of Alaska for the construction of a state capital. The capital land was instead transformed into a public park. Conversely, Amoosement Park was built by volunteers in a single week.

“Summer in the Park(s)! I yelled to Pete, who was downstairs, working on BLBP funding particulars.

“What?”

“Summer in the Park(s)! I yelled, racing downstairs. “Let’s do a summer long reading/team building program in Bugge and Amoosement Parks. This will enable us to assist young people in making the mind/ body connection.

“Good idea,” Pete said, refocusing his gaze on his computer screen.

Pete’s statement meant that it was a good idea, for he generally is quick to say nay to my highly improbable and often unrealistic pie in the sky suggestions.

I next ran this idea past Hally Marshall, the Kids Kupboard Operations Manager.

She, who also liked this idea, said that this complemented our combined partnership motto, which is “feed the mind, feed the body.”

Additional research indicated that there was a strong rationale for Summers in the Park(s). The Covid years were deleterious to children of all ages, and in particular for those ages seven and up. Covid made many more inactive, socially indrawn, and less physically active. I reasoned that we could assist Mat-Su school teachers in offering a summer program in which we also put our energies into countering this.

Pete and I contacted grant funders, who eventually included The Mat-Su Health Foundation, the Rasmuson Foundation, the Palmer Lions, and the City of Palmer all of whom championed our past efforts and encouraged us to apply for funding. Pete and I wrote up an all-encompassing matching funds budget,

crossed our fingers, and hoped for the best.

I next asked Lynsey Dillinger if she’d design a Summer in the Park(s) poster.

Lynsey had created our “All Aboard the Concert Caboose” poster. I partly attributed the success of the recent Mat-Su Orchestra Benefit concert to her colorful design. And so, Lynsey’s Summer in the Park(s) poster is our summer logo.

I next began preparing in earnest for this summer. I continued to organize the BLBP literacy annex, in this way made the story time and curriculum resource books easily accessible to Summer in the Park(s) volunteers and staff.

I next made sure that fliers, postcards, and posters were posted in prominent places, this including BLBP bookcase sites. And I began recruiting volunteers to assist in this program, reminding all that this is a community venture.

Our one contingency plan is weather related. If it rains or is windy, Summer in the Park(s) will take place in the Eagle Hotel.

VFAA SHOWING AT THE ART CAFÉ

Contributed by Martha Happs Valley Fine Arts Association is proud to be doing a group art showing at the Art Café in Palmer for the month of June. The reception will be on First Friday, June 5, from 5 to 7 PM. Come and enjoy the diversified

art of Valley Fine Arts Association and some snacks at the reception.

The Art Café is located at 131 E. Blueberry Ave., Palmer.

The Art Café is a creative space offering different gallery shows each month, DIY art projects, like pottery painting, mosaics and fused glass, and classes alongside coffee, ice cream and snacks. It’s a casual, cozy spot for all ages to relax,

create and enjoy treats. The Art Café focuses on self-expression and community.

The Valley Fine Arts Association was formed in 2005 to create, encourage and advance fellowship among artists of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley of Southcentral Alaska. It is comprised of artists at all levels of development, from student to professional. We are inclusive of anyone who has the desire to express themselves artistically in various forms and mediums. We welcome everyone who values and supports the presentation of visual art.

Our members gather several times monthly at various venues to meet and support each other in our endeavors. Attendees are encouraged to bring current art projects to work on. We enjoy the camaraderie as we share and help each other. We foster learning through demonstrations of all sorts of techniques, mediums and disciplines. We occasionally offer model sessions for those of you who want the chance to paint from life.

We also have discussions about marketing, self-promotion, art therapy, current trends, group shows and all things artistically related. When special events are offered, members will be notified by email. Our Facebook page will also have info on events. There are many ways one can volunteer to assist VFAA in our endeavors: be on the board, Exhibition/Installation Committee, clerical tasks, retreat committees, publicity, membership drive, education and demonstrations, community outreach, historian scrapbook and helping at events.

The Anchorage Concert Association is excited to announce year three of Rock the Hill. It’s more than a music festival; it’s a celebration of the art, culture, and outdoor adventures that make Anchorage unique.

Set at the foothills of the Chugach Mountains, Rock the Hill blends live music with the natural beauty of Anchorage. This year’s festival will feature thirteen Alaskan artists, bringing a mix of soul, indie rock, folk, jazz, and

reggae.
