A commitment to opportunity – supporting Louisiana’s students since 1884 program

Tulane’s promise to the state

Each year, Tulane University funds a full year of tuition for 144 Louisiana undergraduate students through the Louisiana Legislative Scholars Program.

• Each of Louisiana’s 144 legislators designate one scholarship recipient every year

• Open to all Louisiana high school graduates

• 100% tuition covered for an academic year

The Legislative Scholars Program keeps the brightest minds in Louisiana, builds a stronger workforce and makes higher education accessible to students from all backgrounds.

A historical partnership

The Legislative Scholars Program was initiated in 1884 when the Louisiana Legislature created a partnership in the state constitution between the state and university in which Tulane provides full scholarships to legislatively selected Louisiana students. The Program entrusts each of Louisiana’s 144 state legislators with the selection of one scholarship recipient to Tulane University every year.

Tulane has helped thousands of Louisiana residents pursue their education through this program since 1884.

Joining the vibrant Tulane Community

How does the program work?

• Available to all Louisiana high school graduates who have been admitted to Newcomb-Tulane College as full-time undergraduate students.

• Students should contact state legislators to be nominated.

• Students must secure a legislator’s nomination each year and continue to meet a minimum 2.30 cumulative GPA.

To be considered, students must be U.S. citizens or eligible residents who reside in the state of Louisiana, must graduate from a Louisiana high school, and must already be admitted to Tulane as full-time undergraduate students. Students will be granted access to the program form through their Green Wave Portal once admitted to Tulane.

Eligible students must contact legislators themselves to request nomination. Each legislator runs their selection progress differently, but Tulane recommends contacting legislator(s) by sending a cover letter and resume via email and/or physical mail and following up with the legislators’ offices.

Award recipients are selected each year by individual legislators, not by Tulane. When a legislator leaves office, students are required to secure a nomination from a different legislator.

Tulane’s Office of Financial Aid is available to assist students who do not receive a nomination in subsequent years.

Empowering Louisiana students through su pport a nd opportunity

Tulane awards millions of dollars in financial aid to Louisiana students every single year. In addition to the Louisiana Legislative Scholars Program, Tulane and offers guaranteed admission to Louisianians who meet certain qualifications through The Louisiana Promise.
