VELKOMMEN

Vi byder publikum og konkurrencedeltagerne velkommen til den 4. afholdte Lied-Duo-Competition i København. Over tre dage vil 10 udvalgte duoer, repræsentanter fra en lang række lande, konkurrere i et bredt Lied-repertoire, og ikke mindst sætte fokus på selve Lied-kunsten. Konkurrencen er åben for alle stemmetyper, men er netop en Duo-konkurrence: Det vokale og det pianistiske bliver vurderet på lige fod. Det er med andre ord den samlede musikalske fremførelse, dommerpanelet tager stilling til. Vi kommer til at opleve, at den kunstneriske intimitet og det fælles udtryk forvandler konkurrencesituationen til en serie af indholdsrige koncerter. Det kan næppe anfægtes, at især operakunsten har en bred folkelig appel, men i musikkens forunderlige verden er der visse særligt følsomme områder, som synes at kalde på komponistens inderste følelser. Man kan fremhæve strygekvartetten i lige så høj grad som Lied-kunsten. Her har igennem århundreder de største komponister ladet sig inspirere maksimalt og ofte sat i gang af tilsvarende beåndede digtere. Ved Copenhagen Lied-Duo-Competition er der også sat særligt fokus på dansksproget Lied-kunst, og det bliver spændende at registrere, hvordan den danske ”tone” blander sig med den centraleuropæiske tradition og tilmed yderligere med en række nyere Lieder. De to første konkurrencerunder bliver afholdt på DKDMs Studiescene, kendt for sin fremragende akustik, og selve finale koncerten kan høres i DKDM-koncertsalen, et rum som har lagt akustik til de største sangere og pianister gennem mange årtier. WELCOME

We welcome the audience and our competition participants to the fourth international Copenhagen Lied Duo C ompetition. Across three exciting days, 10 selected duos representing many different countries will compete in a broad Lied repertoire, focusing on the specific art of Lied. The competition is a duo contest where the vocalist and the pianist are assessed on equal terms as an ensemble. In other words, the jury will evaluate the musical performance as a whole. The audience will experience the artistic intimacy and musical expression, which in return will turn the competition into a series of content-rich concerts. Opera has had a broad and popular appeal for hundreds of years. In the world of music, however, there are certain particularly sensitive areas, which seem to stir the composer’s innermost emotions. One emphasis can be placed on the string quartet, and another on the art of Lied. Over centuries, the greatest composers in music history have been inspired to write Lieder, often ignited by brilliant poems. In the Copenhagen Lied Duo Competition special atten tion will be paid to the Danish Lied, and it will be exciting to explore how the “Danish light” blends with the central European tradition and even further with a number of contemporary Lieder. The first two rounds will take place at the Royal Danish Academy of Music’s Studio Hall, known for its excellent acoustics. The final concert takes place in the Concert Hall, which has lent its acoustics to both some of the greatest singers and pianists over many decades. COMPETITION RULES

The age limit for each of the performers in the duo is on the first competition day 35 years. A pre-jury will select 10-12 duos from the submitted sound recordings. These duos qualify to enter the competition. The pre-jury will also have the opportunity to select 3 duos who are invited to the competition in the case of a cancellation from the preliminarily selected. The repertoire for the competition shall consist of 60 minutes of music of which at least 15 minutes must be in the Danish language. 10 duos perform in the first round: each duo with a programme of 20 minutes (repertoire A), of which at least 5 minutes must be in the Danish language. 8 duos perform in the second round: each duo with a programme of 30 minutes (repertoire B), of which at least 5 minutes must be in the Danish language. 4 duos perform in the final round: each duo with a programme of 20 minutes, of which at least 5 minutes must be in the Danish language. In this round 10 minutes of music can be from repertoire A.

VICTOR KASSEBEER & STELLA LORENZ

DUO LORENZ/ KASSEBEER VICTOR EMIL KASSEBEER: Singer Victor is a Danish baritone with previous studies at the Royal Academy of Music. In his duo with Stella Lorenz he has recently been selected for the young artist programme of the Leeds Lieder Festival, and has won the ‘Historical Women Composers Prize’ at the Royal Academy of Music. While the german lied has been his most prevalent focus, contemporary music is a great interest of his, and a field of music he feels great responsibility in perpetuating. Furthermore, spreading awareness of non-male, marginalized and otherwise forgotten composers is of great importance to him. STELLA MARIE LORENZ: Pianist Stella Marie Lorenz is a German pianist currently studying on the advanced diploma at the Royal Academy of Music. She was awarded a Master of Vocal Accompaniment with distinction at the MDW in Vienna. Stella is passionate to juxtapose the known and unknown in classical music, encouraging listeners to engage and discover. She has played serveral world premieres, and compositions of female composers represent a growing part of her repertoire, having recorded songs for Swap-ra’s Forgotten Voices this year and having won the Historical Women Composers Prize with her duopartner Victor Kassebeer.

LUCIA SZABOVÁ: Singer Lucia Szabová is a mezzosoprano from Slovakia. At the age of 19 she was a guest soloist at the Slovak National Theatre in Svätopluk (E. Suchoň). She continued her studies at the Janáček’s Academy of Music in Brno, where she has also performed roles of Olga in Eugen Onegin and Dorabella from Cosi fan tutte at the Chamber Opera Brno. In Denmark you could hear Lucie i.e., as a soloist at the Copenhagen Opera Festival in OPERAP (2018) and as a DUO with N. Okrusko in a solo pop-up concerts (2020), with opera trio Les Voix at the Herning Opera Festival or at The Royal Danish Opera House where she sings at the opera chorus and regularly takes chorus solos and smaller roles. NADIA OKRUSKO: Pianist Nadia Okrusko (born 1989) is a graduate of Sankt Petersburg’s Rimksy-Korsakov Conservatoire and has a masters degree from Royal Danish Academy of Music. She debuted as soloist at 15 years old, performing Mozart concerto with Kaunas chamber orchestra. In 2008, she won 1st prize at Rosalyn Tureck Bach competition in New York, USA. She has performed as soloist and chamber musician in many European countries, as well as in Mexico, Ecuador, USA and China. In Denmark, Nadia has performed at Jewish Culture Festival, Copenhagen Opera Festival, Copenhagen Piano Festival, as well as as a soloist with Percurama percussion orchestra at Radiohuset hall in Copenhagen. — 9

AMBER FASQUELLE & HAMISH BROWN

DUO RAVENNA AMBER FASQUELLE: Singer Amber Fasquelle is a mezzo soprano from San Francisco, California, currently based in Berlin. Amber began her career with the Deutsche Oper Berlin after winning the Opera Foundation competition in 2018. Before moving to Germany, Amber worked with renowned companies in the USA including the Aspen Music Festival, Opera Theatre St. Louis, and Cincinnati Opera. Beyond her experience singing in the United States, Amber also participated in the Britten Pears Aldeburgh Festival as a young artist. Most recently, Amber finished working in Valencia as a Young Artist. HAMISH BROWN: Pianist Hamish Brown is a British pianist, whose work includes performances as a vocal accompanist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist and soloist. Hamish read music at the University of Manchester, continuing with postgraduate studies under Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles at the Royal College of Music, graduating with Distinction. He has won prizes at the Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Wigmore Hall Song Competition, Mozart Singing Competition and Somerset Song Prize. He has performed at Oxford Lieder Festival, Internationaal Lied Festival Zeist, Heidelberger Frühling, and live on BBC Radio 3.

ROLFE DAUZ: Singer San Francisco native, Filipino-American baritone Rolfe Dauz studied at Bard College, NY, came to the Netherlands to continue his studies at the National Opera Academy and is a recipient of the Holland Scholarship and the Non-EU Talent Grant. Recently, Dauz toured the Netherlands with Opera2Day, covered Leporello with the Orchestra of the 18th century, gave a Grote Zangers live stream concert in the Muziekgebouw and, was seen at the 2021 Holland Festival performing the role of Wotan/Hingaan Jann in a new opera entitled Ine Aya’ by Indonesian composer Yadi Nursalim Anugerah. GABRIELE ZEMAITYTE: Pianist Gabriele Zemaityte was born in Vilnius, Lithuania. At the age of six she began her studies at the National M. K. Ciurlionis Art School in Vilnius. Laureate of numerous national and international piano competitions, she has taken part in masterclasses with such renowned teachers as Dmitry Bashkirov, and Stefan Vladar among others. In 2019, Gabriele completed her Master degree at Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag in the class of Prof. Naum Grubert. Since 2017 Gabriele is privileged to have an opportunity to practice on a Bechstein grand piano loaned by Nationaal Muziekinstrumenten Fonds. — 11

GUY ELLIOTT & HAMISH BROWN GUY ELLIOTT: Singer Guy Elliott is a tenor based in London where he studied on a full scholarship at the Royal College of Music. He has won several awards and scholarships including the Britten-Pears YAP Prize at the Wigmore Hall Song Competition with his duo partner Hamish Brown. Guy is an experienced opera, concert and recital soloist with highlights including Messiah (Handel) at the Royal Albert Hall and Requiem (Mozart) at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna. In 2019, he made his Wigmore Hall debut as part of their French Song Exchange. HAMISH BROWN: Pianist Hamish Brown is a British pianist, whose work includes performances as a vocal accompanist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist and soloist. Hamish read music at the University of Manchester, continuing with postgraduate studies under Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles at the Royal College of Music, graduating with Distinction. MEGAN MOORE: Singer American Mezzo-soprano Megan Moore has won first prize at the Young Concert Artist International Auditions and the Jensen Foundation Vocal Competition. She has also taken home top honors from the Naumburg Foundation International Competition in Concert Repertoire and the Gerda Lissner Lieder & Song Competition. In the 21-22 season, Megan creates the role of Ino in the world premiere of Lord of Cries at Santa Fe Opera and concert highlights will include recitals at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C and Merkin Hall in New York City in collaboration with Francesco Barfoed. FRANCESCO BARFOED: Pianist Danish pianist Francesco Barfoed currently studies at The Juilliard School, where he is a proud recipient of the Kovner Fellowship. Francesco frequently collaborates with Megan Moore and in the past year they won 1st prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, 2nd prize at the Naumberg International Vocal Competition, performed at Lincoln Center’s renowned Alice Tully Hall and worked with Renée Fleming at Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio. Francesco is on the vocal coaching faculty at Saluzzo Opera Academy in Italy and teaches sight-reading for pianists at Juilliard.

ULLNER & BRANNER ANNE SOPHIE HJORT ULLNER: Singer The Danish soprano Anne Sophie Hjort Ullner studied at The Royal Danish Academy of Music and at the Opera Academy at The Royal Danish Theatre. She made her stage debut in 2015 at The Royal Danish Opera as Papagena in The Magic Flute and her repertoire includes roles such as Nedda in Pagliacci (Leoncavallo) and Agnès in Written on skin (George Benjamin). Alongside her operatic performances she has worked extensively as a lied and oratorio singer and she works regularly with leading members of the baroque scene in Denmark. In 2016 Anne Sophie was the recipient of the Edith Aller Memorial Scholarship. MATTIAS BRANNER: Pianist Mattias is a danish pianist who studied at RDAM with Amalie Malling and Søren Rastogi, and in Paris with Eugen Indjic. In summer 2021 Mattias was admitted to the advanced postgraduate diploma class at RDAM with accompaniment and chamber music as main subjects. He is currently studying there with Christen Stubbe Teglbjærg, Berit Johansen Tange and Jens Elvekjær. The intimate collaboration between singer and pianist with the lied art form has long been a preferred area of activity. A song of the smallest scale by a great composer can in an unpretentious manner open up experiences of sublimity and eternity - experiences for which Mattias feels there is an urgent need in his own generation. — 14

JULIETH LOZANO: Singer Colombian soprano awarded a Master in Vocal Performance and Artist Diploma in Opera at RCM where she studied with Dinah Harris. An Irene Hanson and Independent Opera at Sadler’s Wells scholar. In 2016 she participated in Georg Solti’s Academy and sang Zerlina at the Verbier Festival’s Project Opera; being awarded the Prix Thierry Mermod. She has had masterclasses with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Angela Gheorghiu, among others. Among her roles are Vixen in The cunning little Vixen and Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro directed by Sr Thomas Allen. 2019/20 Young artist at the National Opera Studio UK. JOÃO ARAÚJO: Pianist João Araújo graduated from the Royal College of Music in London where he was tutored on the lied genre by Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles. He was awarded best pianist prizes at the Art Song division of the Montreal International Music Competition and in the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards at Wigmore Hall. He played in masterclasses of Kiri Te Kanawa, Graham Johnson, Simon Keenlyside, Ann Murray and performed at festivals such as the Oxford Lieder Festival and Schubertiade Espace 2. João is a staff pianist at Aveiro University in Portugal where he works with the singing and strings classes.

VOSS/ HONKAMAA KIRSTEN VOSS: Singer Kirsten Voss er mezzosopran og solistklassestuderende ved Reinaldo Macias på Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium. Hun arbejder bredt både med kunstsange, kirkemusik og opera, og har en særlig interesse for at bringe klassisk musik frem igennem særligt designede konceptkoncerter såsom ”KØN”, ”Meditation over havet” og ”Endelighed/ Uendelighed”. Kirsten har tidligere optrådt som solist ved Aarhus Kammermusikfestival 2020, som solist med Aalborg Symfoniorkester og været finalist i Rued Langgaard konkurrencen 2021. Kirsten er derudover også modtager af Ejnar Hansens legat 2020. SONJA HONKAMAA: Pianist Finnish pianist Sonja Honkamaa has studied music at a professional level in Finland and Denmark. In June 2021 she finished her Master’s with the highest marks in the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. Her most important teachers have been Søren Rastogi and Martin Qvist Hansen. She has performed at professional venues, such as ArtSong Aarhus, Silkeborg Classic and Aarhus Chamber Music Festival. In addition, she has participated in the Nordic Piano competition and the Finnish National Piano Competition. She has been granted scholarships by Holger Arndts Mindelegat and Viggo Makwarths Musiklegat. — 16

LABOURDETTE/ MENA This madrilean soprano studied voice at the UdK Berlin. She has won prizes at various international competitions. She made her debut in 2016 as Oscar from Un ballo in maschera in Teatro Municipale di Piacenza, where she also embodied Rosina from Il Barbiere di Siviglia. She has debuted at theatres such as the Teatro de la Maestranza (Nannetta and Despina, a.o.) and the Teatro Real (Tebaldo in Don Carlo and 2nd Niece in Peter Grimes). Invited to various Lied festivals, she will release her first recording project in this genre in 2022. She has also sung purely symphonic repertoire. ALBERT MENA: Pianist After his studies at Musikene, the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country, young Spanish pianist Albert Mena is pursuing his Masters Degree in piano at the University of the Arts, Berlin with Prof. Markus Groh, specialising in Chamber Music and Lied. He has participated in festivals such as “Quincena Musical” in San Sebastián (Spain), Leeds Lieder Festival (England) and Zeist Lied Festival (Holland). Since 2017 he works in the singing classes of Prof. Aris Argiris and Prof. María José Montiel as well as in the contemporary lied class of Axel Bauni at the University of the Arts, Berlin. — 17

JURY TOKE LUND CHRISTIANSEN (Chairman of the Jury) was educated with Professor Poul Birkelund at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) and had further studies with Marcel Moyse and William Bennett. TLC made his debut as a soloist in Mozart Concerto in G, K-313 with Marcel Moyse conducting. From 1968 until 2013 he held the position as a solo flautist in DR-Symfoniorkester, Danish National Symphony Orchestra. He is associate professor (docent) at RDAM. TLC has recorded a great part of the chamber music repertoire for flute: J.S. Bach, Händel, Leclair, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Fauré, Roussel (complete music with flute), Ibert (complete chamber music with flute), Saint-Saëns (complete chamber music with flute) with pianist Elisabeth Westenholz, The Kuhlau Quartet a.o. . As a writer TLC has published a number of books including novels, essays and “Flute Playing in Denmark”. HELMUT DEUTSCH ranks among the finest, most successful and in-demand song recital accompanists of the world. He was born in Vienna, where he studied at the Conservatory, the Music Academy and the University. He was awarded the Composition Prize of Vienna in 1965 and appointed professor at the age of twenty-four. Although he has performed with leading instrumentalists as a chamber musician, he has concentrated primarily on accompanying in song recitals. At the beginning of his career he worked with the soprano Irmgard Seefried, but the most important singer of his early years was Hermann Prey, whom he accompanied as a permanent partner for twelve years. Subsequently he has worked with many of the most important recital singers and played in the world’s major music centres. His collaborations with Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau and Michael Volle are currently among his most important. For many years TOVE LØNSKOV was a member of the piano faculty at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and at the North Jutland Academy of Music. She has a wide-ranging career as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Denmark and abroad. She has been a soloist with most of the Danish symphony orchestras and has worked with such conductors as Uri Segal, Thomas Briccetti, Jorma Panula, Zdenek Macal, and Avi Ostrowsky. As a chamber musician she has played with such famous names as the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal and the Russian violinist Leonid Kogan, and for many years she has been a regular duo partner with the flautist András Adorján. With the pianist Rodolfo Llambias she forms a much-appreciated piano duo which has received several prizes. The duo has recorded many CDs, including the collected piano works of Debussy and Schubert, and it has given concerts all over the world. — 19

JURY KIRSTEN BUHL MØLLER first studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and at the Opera Academy in Copenhagen and then later pursued further studies in London with Thomas Hemsley and in New York with Oren Brown. After graduating from the Academy she sang many different roles at the Danish National Opera. Her performances as Cherubino, Dorabella, Cenerentola, Orlovsky and Nicklaus are especially renowned. She has also had an extensive career on the Danish and international concert stage, including recitals and oratorios. Throughout her singing career, she has often appeared on radio and television, and she has made several recordings. All along Kirsten has been teaching at the same time as pursuing her singing career, and she was for several years a member of the voice faculty at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, before she was appointed as a Professor and Head of the Voice Department from 1996 – 2017. She has given many Masterclasses and courses, and she has taught a great number of Scandinavia’s professional singers. NIKLAS SIVELÖV demonstrates an impressive artistic range as a pianist, composer and piano professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Music. Sivelöv is known for his extensive repertoire and creative approach combined with a deep knowledge and sense of style and tradition which one can only develop through vast experience and a long outstanding career. Sivelöv is also an artist who likes to move outside the classical genre, and he is especially fond of working with improvisational arts. His concert career spans four continents, including venues such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Barbican, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Tivoli Copenhagen and the Atheneum in Bucharest. Niklas Sivelöv has taken his career to new international heights with an extensive catalogue of recordings for such labels as BIS, Caprice, Dacapo, Naxos, Toccata Classics and AMC Classical. — 20

The German baritone, ANDREAS SCHMIDT, studied singing with Ingeborg Reichelt and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and made his opera debut in 1984 with the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Subsequently he became a member of that company. As a guest, he has appeared with the Hamburg State Opera, German State Opera of Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Bayreuther Festspiele, Vienna State Opera, Grand Theátre Genève, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opera de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, La Scala Milan, and the Metropolitan Opera. In concert, he has performed with such North American orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Cleveland Orchestra; in Europe he has appeared with nearly all the leading orchestras. He is a saught after teacher and is currently professor and head of the voice department at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich as well as a guest professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Andreas Schmidt has given masterclasses all over the world. EVA HESS THAYSEN has been a member of the voice faculty at The Royal Danish Academy of Music since 2008. Since 2006 she has also been teaching voice at The Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy as well as giving masterclasses at conservatoires in Europe and Asia. As an opera singer, Eva has sung more than 40 roles on stage, mainly as a principal soloist with The Danish National Opera. She has performed with all Danish Symphony Orchestras and has also appeared with The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Malmo Symphony Orchestra. She has performed at festivals all over Europe and has recorded extensively, including The lesser known Nielsen with Tove Lønskov, Charlotte in the opera ”The Sleeping Draught” by Weyse with the Danish Radio Sinfonietta, the vocal solo in Carl Nielsen’s 3rd Symphony as well as numerous recordings of contemporary Danish music Eva Hess Thaysen has been president of the Board of The Danish Lied Society since 2000. — 21
