STEAM TRAINS 3016

Locomotive 3016 was built in 1903 as a C30 Class 4-6-4. There were a total of 145 C30 class locomotives, with 95 being built by Beyer, Peacock and Co. in Manchester, with the remaining 50 built at Eveleigh Railway Workshops in Sydney.

3642

Locomotive 3642 is a fine example of the penultimate design of express passenger steam locomotive in NSW. As a class, these locomotives accelerated long distance passenger timetables, with shorter journey times, leading to new levels of service in the pre-World War II period.

Learn about the history and inner workings of steam and power at the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences and Maitland Rail Museum marquees, where you will find an exciting program featuring talks and interactive model displays. The highlight of Steamfest 2017 is The Great Train Race featuring locomotives 3016 and 3642 running parallel together whilst racing a Tiger Moth aeroplane. Don’t miss out on the action as the two trains roll one by one into Maitland Station at approximately 11.00am on Sunday. Steamfest would like to thank you for attending and sharing our vision, keeping the tradition of steam alive for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. Before you leave Steamfest, stop by the Merchandise Tent to purchase Steamfest memorabilia including t-shirts, pins, mugs, magnets, hats, caps and photo book.

Maitland Rail Museum Marquee (RALLY GROUND) Join Maitland Rail Museum as they talk about the history of Maitland and steam including the South Maitland Railway. Members of the museum have put together an exciting program and there’s a topic for every steam enthusiast. There will be a range of historic photographs and model steam powered engines on display, as well as a model of the Haben Washery at Lidell.

Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences Marquee (RALLY GROUND) Visit the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences marquee to learn and understand the inner workings of machines and steam engines through engaging presentations and models.

RAIL MOTORS CPH 1 & 7 ‘TIN HARE’ ‘Tin Hare’ is the nickname given to the wooden bodied rail cars introduced on the NSW Railways in the 1920s at around the same time that many greyhound tracks were converting to mechanical hares. To the railway crews and passengers alike, these were fast hound racing hares.

621/721 ‘RED RATTLERS’ 621/721 affectionately called the ‘Red Rattler’ gained its nick name from the media from the way the windows and window shutters rattled in their frames. During their service life 621/ 721 spent all of their time on Hunter services. It is therefore fitting that this unit is preserved in the Hunter region as part of the Rail Motor Society’s fleet.
