till something of a taboo subject in one of the richest countries in the world, there has been a growing awareness of homelessness and poverty in Luxembourg in recent years thanks to the work of non-profit organisation Stëmm vun der Strooss. Social worker Michel Hoffmann is among the staff that welcome “clients” in need of food, clothing or medical assistance to the association’s premises.
“We call them clients, but they are above all human beings who, through various circumstances, are poor. Some may have had alcohol or drug dependency problems or be ex-convicts… but I always emphasise that they are human beings who simply don’t have enough money. You can’t put everyone in the same pot.”
ême si le sujet reste relativement tabou dans l’un des pays les plus riches du monde, on assiste depuis plusieurs années au Luxembourg à une prise de conscience croissante du sort des sans-abri et des personnes les plus démunies, grâce au travail de l’association Stëmm vun der Strooss. besoin de nourriture, de vêtements ou d’assistance médicale. « Nous les appelons des clients, mais ce sont avant tout des êtres humains qui, pour différentes raisons, connaissent la précarité. Certains ont eu des problèmes de dépendance à l’alcool ou à la drogue, d’autres ont fait de la prison mais j’insiste toujours sur le fait qu’il s’agit d’êtres humains qui n’ont tout simplement pas assez d’argent. Il ne faut pas mettre tout le monde dans le même panier. »
