NOTEWORTHY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEKS AHEAD FR Le mois de mai sera placé sous le signe de la bannière étoilée, avec deux événements consacrés aux élections américaines de mi-mandat : une conversation avec David Schrieberg et un débat entre Républicains et Démocrates (p. 6 et 7).

Entre-temps, nos membres auront la tête dans les étoiles lors d’une visite dans les coulisses de SES, située à Betzdorf (p. 13).

D’un genre moins spatial, nous parlerons néanmoins d’aménagement d’espaces, dans le cadre de l’exposition Architect@Work, avec un 10×6 Architecture sur le thème de l’innovation et de la viabilité (p. 8).

Le Delano Live traitera de sujets phares, entre GDPR et marketing digital. Le Club aura également le plaisir d’offrir l’opportunité à ses membres de participer au TEDx Luxembourg City (p. 14).

Pour finir sur une note parfumée, le Realty Circle proposera aux professionnels de l’immobilier une dégustation de surprises vinicoles, et les membres du Club auront un avant-goût estival avec une dégustation de rosé et d’huile d’olive (p. 12).

EN May will be marked by stars and stripes, with two events dedicated to the American political landscape: a conversation with David Schrieberg and a Republicans vs Democrats debate (p. 6 and 7).

Meanwhile, our members peer at the stars during a behind-the-scenes visit to the European satellite society (SES) on Tuesday 8 May (p. 13).

We’ll be talking about spaces at the 10×6 Architecture dedicated to innovation and sustainability, which will be hosted as part of the Architect@Work exhibition on 25 April (p. 8).

On 17 April, Delano Live will dig into the topic of digital marketing and GDPR. The Paperjam Club is also pleased to offer its members the opportunity to buy tickets for the TEDx Luxembourg City on 28 April (p. 14).

To finish on a fragrant note, the Realty Circle on 12 April will offer real estate professionals a t­asting of wine surprises, and the Club members will enjoy a summer foretaste with a rosé and olive oil tasting (p. 12).

DAVID’S TAKE ON AMERICA IN THE AGE OF TRUMP Interview : Guy Benzeno

The upcoming midterm elections will be a referendum on Trump and the Republican majority. The results will be enormously important, not only in shaping the future of Donald Trump’s presidency, but in shaping the American political landscape for a great many years to come. But to understand why the question of who wins is so important, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at the big picture of what’s at stake.

As an American, former journalist and entrepreneur, and resident for 15 years in Luxembourg, in what ways does the subject of the 5 May conference hit close to home?

After the 2016 presidential election, an Israeli friend asked if I felt like Yitzhak Rabin’s chief of staff following the prime minister’s assassination, when he said he felt he had lost his country. The fact that 63 million Americans could vote for this failed businessman and reality-TV bully after his divisive, racist and misogynistic campaign, with all that was known and unknown about him, was very hard for me to wrap my head and heart around.

He certainly has more than fulfilled predictions of what to expect: 170 presidential scho­lars, Democrats and Republi­cans alike, rate him the worst president ever. The damage to the United States at home, to its vital standing as a world leader, as a counterweight to China and other undemocratic regimes, and its role in addressing the planet’s problems like climate change is incalculable at this point.

What are the underlying factors that allowed Trump to access the White House, contrary to all expectations?

I’ve been using the perfect storm analo­gy since Trump became the leading Republican candidate when most Americans, including most Republicans, thought he was a joke.

There were many elements creating the storm: an African-­American, Democrat president in a country always struggling with its racist roots; a female opponent who was Hillary Clinton, hated by many and relentlessly demonised by Fox News; Russian interference and manipu­lated social media; then-FBI director James Comey announcing just before the election that the FBI was reopening its email investigation before admitting that there was nothing incriminating; America’s weird electoral system that saw the candidate who won by 2.5 million votes lose due to 80,000 votes in three states. One percentage point better in each of those states and we’d be discussing president Clinton now.

Just as important was the economic dislocation triggered by technology that’s redefining labour and economy, leaving

many people unsure of their future, plus resentment over the concentration of wealth in the hands@Julie: of a few. Millions of are? feeling forgotten people are marginalised, or ignored when special interests and their money have corrupted politics and paralysed Congress, at a time traditional community institutions are weaker. Add to that a white backlash against a country growing more multi-ethnic. And, maybe most important, given all those factors, the winning candidate is an entertaining bully who knows how to push the most primitive emotional buttons of people who feel they’re losing in a rigged system. I do think a considerable slice of Trump voters were flipping a finger at that entire system.

Does the election of Trump fit into the more general tendency of a rise in nationalism and protest votes in general? Can we draw a parallel with the European results (Brexit, Italy)?

Absolutely, yes. Brexit struck me as the first major earthquake in a series of political tremors charac­terised by increasing tribalism around the world. In the still-­ painful aftermath of the global financial

meltdown, together with Europe’s immigration crisis and ongoing terrorism, too many people haven’t been able to share in the recovery. When so many people are insecure economically and socially, when they feel threatened or fearful, they turn inward and look for external factors – and people – to blame. The result is xenophobia and polarisation that make good governance more difficult. It’s one of the reasons why I value Luxembourg and its generally sensible approach to public policy.

What do we make of Trump’s unconventional choices for public agencies (i.e., Scott Pruitt, head of EPA / Mick Mulvaney vs Leandra English for CFPB / Resignation of FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe…)?

This has been among the most disturbing aspects of Trump’s administration and behaviour. His style of governance – mana­gement by chaos, leadership by tweet – is incredibly destabilising and reflects the ignorance he himself brings to his job. He’s named one fox after another to the henhouses.

Not only did Rick Perry not have a clue what the Energy Department he was named to run actually does (he thought he would be an advocate for the oil and gas industry, not the head of the country’s nuclear arsenal and nuclear energy, among other functions), nor Ben Carson about housing and urban develop­ment (a man with no administrative or political experience), nor did Betsy DeVos know about education, but others like Scott Pruitt, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, were well-known enemies of the departments they were named to lead.

In agency after agency, impartial professionals, lifelong civil servants have been marginalised and forced to retire, or in the case of Andrew McCabe, the deputy director of the FBI, fired. Many have resigned, declaring publicly that they could not in good conscience serve an administration that shamelessly lies or fosters bad policies.

Is a return to normality possible?

Is this watershed moment ?

Watershed moment, for sure. Return to normalcy possible? Open question. This moment is unprecedented in so many

ways. I was young the last time the country was close to this, deeply polarised – during the 1960s and early 1970s, the Vietnam War, the series of assassinations, Watergate. But we’ve never had a president like this – ignorant on so many fronts, surrounded by unqualified and corrupt people, and ceding America’s global leader­ship role. It’s hard to be optimistic when the leader of the free world boasts, as he did this month, that “I like conflict.

I like seeing it, and I think it’s the best way to go.” I will say that the series of special Congressional elections in recent months in typical Republican strongholds that have seen a backlash against Trump and his party, which no longer represents real Republican values, does give me renewed hope. There’s a lovely quote from the African-American writer, Ta-Nehisi Coates: “In all of American life, there is a bias toward the happy ending, toward the notion that human resilience and intellect will be a match for any problem.”

I like that quote. I want to believe in it still.
