orn in August 1939, Heinz-Hermann Elting is, as he puts it, “just as old – or young – as the breakout of the war.” Indeed, whether he is doing his daily cycling, swimming or city tours, he has kept a certain youthful exuberance. Elting, formerly a principal administrator on various committees at the European Parliament, takes a particular interest in Robert Schuman,
whose childhood home is only a stone’s throw away from his own home in Clausen. “Schuman was one of the greatest politicians Europe has ever seen,” Elting says. “If Europe has made any progress after the millennia of war, it was due to the Schuman Declaration.” It was this declaration of 9 May 1950, that eventually led to the creation of what we now know as the European Union.

maison d’enfance se trouve à quelques mètres de sa résidence de Clausen. « Schuman est un des plus grands hommes politiques que l’Europe ait jamais connu, dit-il. Si l’Europe a pu progresser après des siècles de conflits, c’est grâce à la Déclaration Schuman. » De fait, la déclaration du 9 mai 1950 est à l’origine de la création de ce que nous appelons aujourd’hui l’Union européenne.
