CLUBNEWS

Tonight we welcome as matchday mascots the youngsters from Maidenhead United Juniors Cobras. The Cobras have had a strong start to the season with the boys working together to battle for their results The team spirit and friendship amongst the boys is amazing and they deserve all the success they get. We hope you enjoy your evening with us, boys!

York Road broke into generous pre-match applause on Saturday to commemorate the life of the late Julian De Havilland who passed away recently. Julian – who died unexpectedly on 13th September – has left a big void at the club. He was a loyal follower who rarely missed a home or away match, always engaging with players and fellow supporters, never failing to commend the team on their efforts He braved all kinds of weather to cheer on the team and in particular his son, our very own Will Julian will be deeply missed by all those who knew him and it was a fitting tribute that Will was able to put in his usual wholehearted 90 minutes against Hartlepool in the MUFC cause in such emotional circumstances

Ticket prices for United’s FA Cup tie with EFL League One side Crawley Town on Saturday 2nd November have been agreed and they will be priced at our normal Vanarama National League matchday prices. Adults will pay £20, concessions (Over 65/UB40/Students) will pay £15, Next Generation supporters (aged 17-22) will pay £10 with those aged 16 and under paying £5 as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets are available for purchase via our ticketing website at ethicalticketingorg/maidenhead-united-fc/events

Meanwhile the identity of United’s men’s Academy’s potential FA Youth Cup First Round Proper is now known ahead of their rearranged Third Qualifying Round tie with Eastbourne United That tie will be played tomorrow night, Wednesday 23rd October with a 7:45pm kick off Admission will be £5 for adults, £2 concessions. Aaron O’Brien’s young Magpies triumphed 4-3 at Wealdstone in a thriller in the last qualifying round and will be looking to move into the competition proper for the first time since 2019/20, when they reached the Third Round Proper for the second consecutive season. If they can get past Eastbourne, then a home tie with Burgess Hill Town awaits in the First Round Proper

RYANPETERS

opportunities to score, our quality wasn’t what we needed it to be. And when you don’t take your chances at one end, and then give up space in your own box, then you are going to be punished and unfortunately, where we could have got another three points, we rather let it slip

Reece and Nathan were probably the pick for us on the day but when weren’t as good as we should have been going forward Credit to the whole team for digging in to ensure that we did not lose the game; when you’re not at your best and can’t get three points, you make sure you come away with something and we have kept a run going. If you look back to the first ten games of the season, a run like this perhaps didn’t look possible, but Saturday showed how far we have come in that respect.

Confidence is now strong in the squad and most of the boys are feeling frustrated about Saturday Training has been electric, and we have another really toughlooking game tonight We have to manage loads during this busy period We would like to train at high-intensity but we have to go from Saturday to Tuesday, so rest is also quite important We have some players coming back now, so there might be the opportunity for rotation tonight.

We are also through to the First Round of the FA Cup which is great. Last Tuesday’s replay was similar to the original tie, where we started really well, scored a great goal, had the opportunity to score a second from the penalty which we didn't take, and the performance dropped for some reason. We just didn't come out in the second half, and for 25 minutes we were up against it We defended really well, managed to break thanks to Reece Smith and score two goals to make a life a little bit easier for us

The gaffer always speaks about the magic of playing under the lights and a little bit of zip on the pitch, so we had all of that At times, it felt like they had the extra man, and they were using that zip on the pitch to their advantage, but then when we got a foothold on the game, we were able to use the ball well. I thought we saw out the game particularly well.

AROUNDTHELEAGUE

Leaders Barnet took a 12th minute lead at Solihull Moors on Saturday through Nicke Kabamba, but subsequently looked like taking a hiding at Solihull before late goals from Zac Brunt and Kabamba’s second gave the scoreline a respectable look after Jack Stevens, an own goal from Joe Kizzi, Sam Bowen and James Gale had given the Moors a comfortable lead. Their margin at the top was reduced to mere goal difference after Forest Green came from behind to defeat struggling Braintree, Kyle McAllister’s late strike giving the Gloucestershire side the points at The New Lawn.

A bad day for the Bees was compounded with a crushing for York City over basement side Ebbsfleet, with former Worthing man Ollie Pearce scoring half of the four goals scored by the Minstermen at the LNER Community Stadium Fleet’s defeat was at least eased by news that the remainder of the bottom four clubs all lost Fylde – like the Fleet – conceded four without reply on their travels, Kevin Phillips first league game in charge a thrashing at Dagenham Wealdstone have only won once this season, and they were three down at home to Yeovil by the hour – the game was won and there was no further goalscoring. Back-to-back wins and clean sheets for the Glovers who host the Magpies on Saturday. Andrew Oluwabori’s first minute goal was enough for FC Halifax Town to defeat troubled Boston.

A Hampshire derby saw Aldershot record their first win since August, coming from behind to gain a much needed three points against Eastleigh at the EBB Stadium Tonight’s visitors Oldham will look to make it six points from two trips ‘down south’ after they defeated a Sutton side whose hopes of promotion back to the EFL look rather distant at this stage Victory at the VBS Community Stadium came after former Magpie Mike Fondop’s opener was cancelled out by Will Davies early in the second half. Charlie Raglan quickly established the lead for the Latics and James Norwood made sure of things in injury time. Oldham have now won seven of their last eight in league and cup.

Tamworth are becoming a surprise package so far this season - their latest success on their artificial surface being a 3-2 win over Woking Tamworth were always leading after they were given the lead by Nathan Tshikuna inside the first ten minutes Tom McGlinchey doubled the Lambs lead and after Max Dyche had given the Cards hope the sides traded injury time goals – Dan Creaney restoring the twogoal lead before Dale Gorman’s 97th minute consolation

Former Heed player Carl Magnay is still looking for his first win at the helm at the International Stadium. In a topsy-turvy clash at midtable Altrincham visitors Gateshead were denied the full three points by Alex Newby’s late strike after experienced Jacob Butterfield and prolific Owen Osini responded to Tom Crawford’s first half penalty. The late DAZN game saw Sam Beckwith’s Rochdale slump to defeat to out-of-form Southend The Shrimpers winner came late in the first half when Josh Walker latched onto his own miskick to score Tarryn Allarakhia’s late effort forced a save from Collin Andeng-Ndi but the away side recorded victory after back-to-back home defeats

WOMEN’STEAM

Maidenhead United Women suffered Adobe Women’s FA Cup heartbreak in the Third Qualifying Round tie against familiar opposition in Fulham FC Women at Motspur Park on Sunday 13th October. United reached a best-ever Second Round appearance last season after epic wins against Richmond & Kew and Sutton United but the draw this time was unkind, giving the Magpies a trip to a Tier 5 big spenders Fulham, who have won every match so far in their London & South East Regional Women’s League campaign, racking up 28 goals and conceding only twice.

United became only the third team to score against the Cottagers this campaign, however, when Natalie Cowell gave the Magpies the lead early on It was a lead that they held until Madeleine Parsonson levelled up before the break. The tie went straight to penalty kicks after Magpies ‘keeper Danni Hull (pictured) pulled off a magnificent save but the home side won through 4-2 on spot-kicks with experienced duo Cowell and Amy Saunders failing to score their kicks in the shoot-out. Fulham – who United have now drawn three times in the competition in the last five seasons, winning once and losing twice – therefore gained a measure of revenge for their shoot-out defeat to the Magpies in the Combined Counties League Cup final back in May

Magpies' manager Ed Jackson-Norris reflected: “We gave a good account of ourselves against a really strong Fulham side I was delighted with the resilience and grit we showed to defend the box and take the game to penalties The mindset we showed was reminiscent of what brought us so much success last year, which is a good sign moving into a big run of games for ourselves. The FA Cup dream of playing a Liverpool or Chelsea at York Road isn't over, simply on pause until next year!”

The next fixture for United’s first team is on Sunday 3rd November when they entertain an Abingdon United team at York Road who they are yet to defeat in league or cup The Development team are in action before then, in League Plate action at Cheltenham Town Ladies reserves Both matches will be 2pm kick offs

LASTTIMEOUT

Maidenhead United advanced through to the FA Cup First Round Proper under the floodlights at York Road with a 3-0 victory over Taunton Town. Goals from Tobi ShoSilva, Ruben Carvalho and Sam Barratt secured United’s progression in the Fourth Round Qualifying Replay.

Inside the opening two minutes, United had their first chance of the game through Shawn McCoulsky The in-form striker was found in behind the Taunton defence by Jayden Mitchell-Lawson, but McCoulsky saw his effort tipped onto the crossbar by Adam Parkes Just two minutes later, Maidenhead again found joy in the space behind the visitor’s defence This time Reece Smith found Tobi Sho-Silva who slotted home a composed finish into the near post to give the Magpies the lead

United were applying some real pressure on the Taunton defence, this time Smith and Mitchell-Lawson with the former whipping a dangerous cross through the sixyard box that just lacked a finishing touch. Sho-Silva nearly doubled his and United’s tally on the night, attacking McCoulsky’s looping cross only to see his header cleared off the line.

An all-action Maidenhead start continued as on the 18th minute Will de Havilland was taken down in the penalty area McCoulsky stepped up, but saw his effort saved by Parkes After the penalty save, the game became more even with the visitors starting to find their feet without having any chances of note

Half-time: Magpies 1–0 Taunton Town

Second half substitute Sam Barratt’s first action after coming off the bench was to whip in a dangerous corner. His cross nearly turned to goal as he forced Parkes into a strong save to prevent it nestling in the side netting. Aysa Corrick nearly had an immediate impact for the visitors at the other end of the pitch. He played a neat pass on the turn to set up Smith, but his shot was too powerful and flew over the bar

Tom Smith and Corrick again linked up well on the edge of United’s area, creating an opening for Smith to shoot, but Craig Ross was there to pull off a superb save down to his right McCoulsky, determined to continue his fine scoring form, tried his luck from the far right-hand side of the box. This time he beat Parkes but was denied by the upright.

As we entered added time, United made it two through Ruben Carvalho. Reece Smith again with the assist, delivering a delightful ball across the face of goal and again all it needed was a touch, which this time it got. It was two in as many minutes for United, as Barratt’s powerful shot took a little nick off Eddie Jones leaving Parkes no time to adjust, and he had to watch the ball squirm past the near post

Full-time: Magpies 3–0 Taunton Town

MEETTHEOPPOSITION

Oldham Athletic are flying. They have won seven of their last eight league and cup matches. Could this season see a first promotion since 1990/91 for the proud Lancastrians who were Premier League founder members back in 1992?

Saturday’s trip to Sutton United saw the Latics bounce back from a 3-2 home loss to Solihull in their previous league match to move within four points of leaders Barnet The visitors took an 18th-minute lead at the VBS Community Stadium when leading scorer Mike Fondop-Talum headed in Mark Kitching’s cross for his sixth goal of the campaign. Sutton levelled straight after half-time through Will Davies, who pounced after the ball had come back off the woodwork, but Oldham would not be denied and Charlie Raglan’s header quickly restored their lead before James Norwood nodded home in stoppage time to wrap things up for Micky Mellon’s side.

Finishes of twelve and tenth in their two seasons in the National League since relegation in 2022 have not really been good enough for a club the size of Oldham Athletic In both campaigns they have taken four of six points available against the Magpies In February this year, Oldham got the breakthrough here when Joe Garner headed in a long ball in the 15th minute Fondop doubled the visitors' lead in the 58th minute and then grabbed a second 30 minutes later, effectively killing the game off for the Magpies Sam Beckwith delivered a late consolation for the hosts but it was rather a dismal afternoon for United. Earlier in the season Brad Keetch’s later effort from range had earned a deserved draw for Maidenhead who grew into the game after Alex Reid’s opener.

Oldham Athletic’s first visit to York Road came under the management of David Unsworth, the former England man’s spell in charge at Boundary Park being a brief one A little under 2 years ago – 8th October 2022 to be precise - Charlee Adams' second-half penalty helped Maidenhead salvage a deserved draw as they hosted former Premier League opposition in a league encounter at York Road for the first time The away side opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when Fondop dispossessed Will De Havilland and slipped Ben Tollitt through for a cool finish Oldham could have doubled their advantage three minutes after the break, but Dan Gyollai did well to deny Fondop from close range. United equalised with 15 minutes to go after a penalty was awarded for handball, Adams slotting home. The hosts pushed for a late winner, but Oldham held on to deny the Magpies a third straight win.

The Latics will be looking to follow the example of their flamboyant owner Frank Rothwell In February 2021, at age 70, he became the oldest person to complete the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a solo sail across the Atlantic Ocean At the age of 73, he undertook a second journey, finishing that in February 2024 He raised £11 million on his first trip and £253,000 on his second voyage, also setting a new world record as the oldest person to row solo across any ocean Similar defiant spirit will stand tonight’s visitors in good stead in their promotion bid.

The Gaffer – Mickey Mellon

Experienced manager who took his first job at Fleetwood Town in 2008 A twolegged playoff semi-final at the end of 2009/10 against Droylsden was decided on penalties, goalkeeper Danny Hurst saving the last penalty to put Fleetwood through 4–3 The final was played against Alfreton Town at Highbury on 9th May; in front of a new record capacity crowd of 3,592, Fleetwood defeated Alfreton 2–1.

A spell with Barnsley followed before Mellon was appointed manager at Shrewsbury in May 2014. The Shrews won promotion back to the third tier of English football at the first attempt, but Mellon left Shrewsbury Town in October 2016 after winning only two of the opening eleven games of the new campaign and was subsequently appointed manager of Tranmere Rovers in the National League

Mellon led Tranmere back into the Football League with victory over Boreham Wood in the National League play-off final and made it back-to-back promotions

Mellon later worked in his homeland as manager of Dundee United before a second spell at Tranmere. On 13th October 2023, Mellon was appointed manager of Oldham Athletic.

THREE TO WATCH

Josh Lundstram is a midfielder who arrived at Boundary Park on the back of a highly successful individual season for Altrincham, which saw him win a number of awards in 2022/23. Formerly with Crewe, Lundstram returned to Moss Lane after a previously successful loan spell, this time on a permanent basis, and was ever-present as Phil Parkinson’s side reached the semi-final of the FA Trophy. Lundstram was also named as the 2022 North West Footballer of the Year.

Mike Fondop is a former Magpie whose loan spell in 2019 unfortunately saw him pick up as many red cards as league goals He has been prolific elsewhere, beginning his footballing journey at Stanway Rovers in Eastern Counties League whilst he studied Actuarial Sciences at the University of Essex before securing a move to Billericay Town in 2015. Oxford City, Guiseley, FC Halifax Town, Wrexham, Chesterfield, Aldershot, Burton, and Hartlepool have been destinations since.

James Norwood is a striker who knows how to get out of the National League. He joined Latics on a two-year deal ahead of the 2023/24 season, having scored 20 goals in 2017/18 as Tranmere Rovers made their way back to the EFL through the play-offs Starting with Eastbourne Town, his breakout season came in 2012/13 with Forest Green Rovers, when he found the net on 15 occasions Twenty-nine goals in his debut EFL campaign steered them to back-to-back promotions, returning to League One after five years away.

LASTTIMEOUT

Maidenhead United played out a 1-1 draw against Hartlepool United on a sunny afternoon at York Road. Sam Barratt’s first half penalty was cancelled out by Adam Campbell with a good strike from range.

The first chance of the game fell the way of the visitors, when scrabble in the area landed at the feet of Tom Parkes His shot through bodies looked goalbound, but the post came to United’s rescue With 12 minutes gone, Reece Smith received a cross-field pass from Sam Barratt which he took down well In trademark style, Smith cut inside on his right foot looking to bend his shot into the far corner, but Brad Young got a hand to it to turn it round the post

With fairly little happening, United were given a great chance to take the lead as for the second time in as many games Will de Havilland was brought down in the area. Barratt stepped up to the spot and smashed his penalty straight down the middle and into the back of the net. United finished the half with a half-chance from Miles Welch-Hayes. The fullback drove forward, but his cross-turn-shot flew just over the bar

Half-time: Magpies 1-0 Hartlepool United

Within seconds of the second half starting, Maidenhead had a great chance to double their lead Casey Pettit lifted a delicate ball over the top to James Golding, but the latter was unable to place his shot into the corner

Maidenhead continued to probe and test the Pool’s defence A smart turn from Nathan Ferguson opened up space for him to play through Shawn McCoulsky in the 55th minute. All on his own, United’s number nine did well to create a shooting angle but dragged it just wide.

McCoulsky again found some joy in wide areas when skipped passed his man who tried to scythe him down, but his shot in search of the far corner was easily collected by Young.

Against the run of play, Hartlepool’s substitutes Anthony Mancini and Adam Campbell combined well to present the former with a shooting opportunity Mancini looked to bend his shot into the corner but a strong palm from Craig Ross kept the score level However, just minutes later the visitors did draw level through Campbell A sweet strike from the substitute left Ross helpless

United were dominant in possession following the goal and looked to break down a deep Hartlepool defence, but the Magpies had no chances to cause Brad Young any danger.

Full-time: Magpies 1–1 Hartlepool United

TARPEY TAKES HIS BOW

All at Maidenhead United were saddened last week to hear of the retirement of modern-day club legend Dave Tarpey

Reading-born 35-year-old Tarps started out with Henley Town in the Hellenic League before joining the Magpies, then Conference South rivals Basingstoke Town. In 2009, he linked up with Alan Devonshire for the first time, joining Dev at Hampton & Richmond, and he returned to Beveree following a short spell with Farnborough Town. In the summer of 2014, Johnson Hippolyte secured the signature of Tarps, and so began the most prolific spell in the forward’s career

In 40 starts and 6 substitute appearances, Tarps excelled in a disappointing season, which saw Hippolyte’s contract run out, with both parties agreeing he would leave by mutual consent The new manager was waiting in the wings as Hippolyte’s last game in charge was a trophy-winning one, the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup won with a crushing 4-0 margin against Aylesbury United at Chesham. Tarpey was one of just five players in black and white that day retained by new manager Alan Devonshire – watching in the stands at The Meadow – for the 2015/16 season.

Tarps scored a further 23 goals that season as Dev’s boys came close to qualifying for the National League South play-offs and enjoyed a remarkable six-match FA Cup run, with Tarpey scoring three times in that run, which ended in front of the BT Sports cameras at York Road in a 1st Round replay against Port Vale This was a mere warm-up for what was to come Dev brought in Sean Marks from his former club Braintree Town – "the missing link" he said – and the big-man little-man partnership paid dividends Target man Marks hit the target 17 times and laid on many more of Tarpey’s incredible 46 goals in all competitions, scored in just 45 starts as Maidenhead won the National League South, their first divisional title in 55 years.

United – and particularly Tarpey – made the step up with ease, and he’d already scored seven National League goals in seven starts before EFL side Barnet came calling on the final day of the transfer window Finally becoming a fully professional footballer at the age of 27, Tarpey suffered the monumental blow of injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in only his second appearance. By the time he was fit again, The Bees had lost their EFL status. Tarpey rejoined the Magpies for a goalless 3-game loan spell the following season and subsequently moved to Woking, where he played a part in their National League South promotion season From there, he relocated to Berkshire, winning the Isthmian League South Central title with Bracknell Town Spells with Leatherhead, Hungerford, and Gosport followed before a final promotion with Marlow at the end of last season.

OPPONENTREWIND

1990/91 was a special season for both Maidenhead United and Oldham Athletic Both clubs celebrated promotion at the end of that momentous campaign United were promoted from the Isthmian League Division 2 South – tier EIGHT of English football – after a number of years in the doldrums. The Latics meanwhile won Barclays League Division 2 to return to the top-flight which they’d left in 1923.

Maidenhead started like a train under the management of Martyn Spong. They won each of their first thirteen league matches, albeit they’d been knocked out of four cup competitions by the start of October. They then had a slump, losing five league games on the trot before going on a 19-game unbeaten run which lasted until April

Meanwhile, six leagues higher, Oldham under former Everton striker Joe Royle had already built a reputation as an effective side, particularly on their plastic surface at Boundary Park The previous season they had reached the final of the Littlewoods (EFL) Cup and were rather unfortunate to lose to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest at Wembley. In the FA Cup they reached the semi-final, led Manchester United in the first tie at Maine Road and took Alex Ferguson’s men to extra-time twice before bowing out in a replay.

Whilst something stirred in East Berkshire, Oldham also made a storming start to the campaign They won their first five Barclays League matches and were unbeaten in their opening 16 Division 2 encounters before defeat at Port Vale on 17th November Ironically, that same afternoon United lost for the first time in Isthmian 2 South – Hampton winning 2-1 at York Road in front of a season’s-best-sofar crowd of 315 despite a goal from Benny Laryea, one of 35 scored by the Maidenhead legend that season alone.

4th May 1991 was D-Day for Oldham. The Latics celebrated clinching promotion despite a 2-0 defeat to a Notts County side managed by future Oldham manager Neil Warnock in front of a crowd of 12,311 at Meadow Lane. Around 150 miles south of Nottingham, our own Magpies were concluding their Isthmian League Division 2 South campaign in front of 157 spectators at Leatherhead The Magpies had secured our own promotion just eleven days prior, in front of a mere 77 supporters on a Tuesday night at Eastbourne United

A week later on the final day of the EFL season, the Latics faced a Sheffield Wednesday side at Boundary Park who were promoted with them. West Ham led, Oldham second and Wednesday third. West Ham would lose 2-1 to Notts County, but as news filtered through that Oldham were losing 2-0, celebrations began at Upton Park. Royle's men pulled it back to 2-2, still not enough to deny the Hammers the title. Deep in injury time, future Latics player and manager John Sheridan gave away a penalty, scored by Neil Redfearn. The trophy arrived by courier at Boundary Park, but much to the embarrassment of Football League officials, it was engraved with West Ham's name on it!

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE TABLE

30 years ago today, horrendous traffic caused the Magpies to arrive at Billericay Town with just 20 minutes to spare before kick-off The hosts took advantage, racing into a 3-0 lead with just 12 minutes on the clock The few visiting supporters who made the trip in the heavy rain must have feared worse was to come The visitors survived until half-time without conceding further goals, but nobody could have predicted the amazing second-half turnaround in this Isthmian League 1st Division encounter Micky Creighton got one back on 63 minutes after good work from James Pritchard. Paul Dadson reduced the deficit to just one with 13 minutes remaining when he swivelled superbly on the edge of the area to tuck a low shot into the far corner. The Magpies were now in the driving seat as the Billericay players argued among themselves, and sure enough, Peter McNamee equalised after a corner was only half-cleared in the 81st minute. United then took the lead when McNamee’s free kick found Daniel Pedley in the 87th minute, and he drilled home the fourth from 20 yards Maidenhead were not quite finished yet, as Dadson latched onto a long ball out of defense with just a minute left on the clock to score the fifth and final goal, completing one of the most incredible comebacks in the club’s history

The Magpies made it 13 National League South games unbeaten today in 2016 following a 3-2 win at promotion rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough. Harry Pritchard gave Maidenhead an early lead on eight minutes when he popped up unmarked to fire a shot into the bottom corner. Jamal Lowe equalised for the hosts in the 14th minute, converting a deflected cross from Nicke Kabamba, but United’s lead was restored just two minutes later. Dean Inman found himself in plenty of space on the edge of the Hampton box and sent a looping header into the top corner Hampton pressed for an equaliser, but it would be the visitors celebrating on the hour mark Dave Tarpey’s corner found Ryan Upward to head home Lowe (now starring in the EFL Championship with Sheffield Wednesday) reduced the deficit to 3-2 on 79 minutes, latching onto a Brendan Kiernan cross, but Alan Massey and Inman comfortably dealt with Hampton’s late aerial assault to move seven points clear at the top of the table.
