CLUB NEWS
Recently our front of shirt sponsor, CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) launched their campaign ‘Missed Birthdays’ - The campaign – to raise awareness of the devastating reality of youth suicide in the UK.
Commercial Partnerships Manager Sian Lancaster was invited to the event and said: “to hear about the campaign was overwhelming but to see this in person on Monday at Wesfield White City was incredibly moving. Each balloon in the installation represented a young person who took their own life, and a birthday they tragically didn’t get to celebrate. It was such an impactful, powerful, and emotive campaign, but beautiful at the same time too.”
In the last decade, 6,929 young people in the UK have taken their own lives. It’s a stat that underlines a devastating truth: so many young lives are ending when they should just be beginning. Right now, suicide is the most common cause of death for those under 24.
Simon - CALM CEO – said: “It’s devastating for a young person to not make it to their 15th, 16th, 17th birthday. It’s absolutely tragic when that reason is suicide. Over the last decade, 6,929 families have been affected by the tragedy of youth suicide. We hope it can open up conversations and with the CALM C.A.R.E kit give everyone the tools to support the young people in their lives.”
The C.A.R.E Kit, launched this week too is a free online resource that provides you with everything you need to be there for the young people in your life. C.A.R.E stands for:
C - Check In
A - Ask how they are
R - Remain close
E - Expert help
Our CALM partnership would not be possible without the support of nine local business who have enabled us to have the CALM logo on the front of the shirt for not just the men’s first team but for ALL of the teams at Maidenhead United. This season working alongside CALM and our CALM partners enables us to continue to make a real difference in our local community.

Welcome back to York Road for a quick turnaround from Saturday. One look at the league table shows the significance of tonight’s fixture and whilst it is only three points at stake it can’t be argued that a win wouldn’t lift the place after a difficult recent run.
We were frustrated after the Tamworth game because we hadn’t laid a glove on them that day. The same cannot be said of the Halifax match. Barring perhaps both boxes we felt we were very good value. At the moment though unfortunately we are not ruthless enough at both ends and it is killing us at this moment in time.
We counted six good chances we created on Saturday. it seems that if you give other teams six chances they take some of them. It feels like a case of ‘if it rains it pours’ for us in recent times. We hit the woodwork twice and there are other good openings for us, for instance when Shawn went through. Essentially though we need to be more clinical, we need to take chances we mist start keeping clean sheets at the other end.
Speaking of ‘when it rains it pours’, it feels that way at the moment with regard to injuries. James Golding went off on Saturday and we will have to review that situation going into tonight. Already this season we have had to use five different players to fill the full back positions. The good news is that having performed well on Saturday we get a quick opportunity to play again with the good things we did at the weekend still fresh in the mind.
The injuries have meant we have had to be proactive in the loan market. Already we have had to send Joshua Johnson and Therry Latty-Fairweather back to their clubs due to injuries.
Tariq Uwakwe is the latest new face and we have at the time of writing only had one opportunity to see him in training so it would certainly not have been right and proper to throw him in at the weekend. He is certainly a good player and will be of use to us over the busy period immediately ahead of us and with the injury situation being what it is he will probably get his chance sober rather than later.
It is back here tonight and we need to take advantage of being in front of our own supporters. They are terrific and they gave us warm appreciation on Saturday at the end of a hard game. I listened recently to the Barnet manager interview where had some words to say about their fans.
We could never accuse our fans of being anything other than supportive and we know we can rely on them to continue coming down and supporting us. Games against tonight’s opposition – who have made some big changes recently – remind us of some high profile battles in the past, games which really got the juices flowing. We are eight consecutive seasons into this league for a reason and National League status is something this club will not give up lightly.

At the top of the table, Barnet, Forest Green Rovers and York City are all sit at the top of three sitting on 21 points each. Barnet secured bragging rights in a local derby away at struggling Wealdstone, an impressive second half display saw goals from Mark Shelton, Callum Stead and Nicke Kabamba in a result that leaves Wealdstone in the bottom four.
Forest Green Rovers picked up an impressive 2-0 win at Gateshead with goals in either half from Liam Sercombe and Christian Doidge in a result that sees the Heed drop to 7th. York City dropped from 1st to 3rd at the end of the day on goal difference following a 0-0 draw in Hampshire against Aldershot Town, the result puts the Shots in 14th.
Joining Wealdstone in the bottom four are Braintree Town, Maidenhead United and Ebbsfleet United who all saw defeat on Saturday in narrow fashion. Braintree Town were defeated at home in a big game with Tamworth. Tom Tonk’s 93rd minute strike moved the Lambs up to 18th and four points clear of the drop.
Maidenhead United were defeated 1-0 at home to FC Halifax Town with Florent Hoti’s second-half strike proving to be the difference, the Shaymen now move to within one point of a play-off place. Ebbsfleet United also saw defeat on the road losing 3-2 at Sutton United.
Will Davies fired Sutton ahead in the first half before Jayden Harris doubled the U’s advantage. The Fleet did come back into the game though and were level before the 70th minute thanks to goals from Dominic Poleon and Franklin Domi, the hosts re-gained the lead through Ashley Nadesan and moved up to 10th as a result.
Two of the remaining three play-off placsides faced each other at the Silverlake Stadium with Eastleigh coming out 4-2 winners over Rochdale. Kairo Mitchell gave the visitors the lead early in the first half but goals from Paul McCallum and Ludwig Francillette ensured that the hosts would go into the interval ahead.
Chris Maguire gave the Spitfires some breathing room before Devante Rodney pulled one back for Dale in an end-to-end game, Paul McCallum’s second of the game put the result beyond doubt.
The final play-off side are Oldham Athletic who ran out narrow victors at home to Yeovil Town. Mike Fondop-Talum’s late header gave the Latics all three points in a result that sees Yeovil drop to 16th in the table.
The best of the rest came in the midlands as Southend United ran out 4-2 victors away to Solihull Moors. Kennan Appiah-Forson and Aribim Pebble gave the Shrimpers an early two goal lead but a strike from Sam Bowen halved the visitors advantage going into the interval.
Gus Scott-Moriss carried on his vein of goalscoring form to reinstate Southend’s two goal advantage. Jack Stevens gave the Moors hope from the spot before Pebble put the result beyond doubt.
Ten-man Boston came from 2-0 down to earn a good point away at Altrincham. Goalkeeper Cameron Gregory was sent off early in the second half resulting in the hosts gaining control and taking a two goal lead thanks to Alex Newby and Regan Linney. The Pilgrims bounced back though and goals from Keaton Ward and Cameron Green ensured the spoils were shared.
Dagenham & Redbridge moved to within one point of the play-offs with a 1-0 win away at Hartlepool United, Josh Umerah’s goal the difference between the two sides.
Finally, AFC Fylde and Woking played out a 1-1 draw in Lancashire with goals in the second half from Nick Haughton and Lewis Walker ensuring the spoils were shared.
WOMEN’S TEAM
United’s Women were due another trip down the M4 on Sunday, scheduled to visit the EFL home of newly promoted Bristol Rovers, a successive second ‘stadium’ game for Ed Jackson-Norris’s young team. Last weekend the Magpies performed superbly for an hour in front of more than 400 spectators at the County Ground, Swindon.
Trailing one-nil to a goal struck from fully 25 yards, United hit the Swindon crossbar and were denied by the hosts goalkeeper before two mistakes inside three minutes were punished by the league leaders who went on to secure a brutal 6-0 scoreline that no-one would have seen coming at half time.
It has been a tough fortnight for the team and manager Ed reflected after the game: “we did really, really for the first hour. The general feeling at half time was that was one of our better forty-fives of the season.”
The manager continued: “The last half hour was a sign of where we are. We are a young group and we are group with bags of potential. But with how young and inexperienced we are and the state we are in after successive heavy defeats – a number of the group have not played a great deal of National League football before – it means there is an element of naivety in our performances. Unfortunately when we show these periods of naivety we are getting punished quite badly.”
Ed added: “Three of the sides we have played so far I feel likely to make up the top four in this division. Bristol Rovers who we face on Sunday are a dark horse. They have recruited really well, you can see from the footage we have seen of them that they are really efficient in their play and they have players with experience at the level.
They appear to be well-backed by the men’s club as well. It should be a good test for us again. Everyone is hurting after the recent results so it is a matter of personal pride.”
The opportunity to play at an EFL stadium once again is something that excites the manager: “The day you don’t get excited at playing at these sorts of grounds is the day you should quit football! I’m ambitious and see myself on the touchline at a WSL club or international level in the future. The more you spend time in these kind of environments, the more you can visualise those ambitions.”
United will head to perhaps the less prestigious environment of Winklebury Sports Complex on Thursday 26th September to take on Southampton Women’s FC: “It is going to a tricky game.
They’ve had a tough start to the season. That anxiety to secure points can kick in early, speaking from experience. They have a new manager who has come in and he has already eluded to shape changes, so that makes it difficult to prepare as we don’t know perhaps quite what we’ll get from them.
The focus this week is going to be nailing our principles and controllables and get back to looking like a Maidenhead United team. We haven’t been ourselves for much of the last two games. So for us next Thursday will all be about fight, character and grittiness and hopefully some good football too.”
The next home fixture for the Magpies is on Sunday 29th September when they entertain Tier 3 side Plymouth Argyle in the FA Women’s National League Cup.
LAST TIME OUT
Maidenhead United fell to a 1-0 defeat to FC Halifax Town as Florent Hoti’s second-half strike was the game’s only goal.
After a miserable morning in Berkshire, the sun broke through and the bright start to the afternoon was matched by Maidenhead. Inside the opening two minutes, some space opened up for Nathan Ferguson who jinked his way through a couple of defenders before cannoning his shot against the foot of the post.
The promising start continued; this time it was Tristan Abrahams with an audacious effort from just outside the centre-circle but unfortunately his shot sailed just over the bar.
With 30 minutes on the clock, the game had gone relatively quiet – with Halifax finding their way into the game and United’s openings becoming fewer.
This was until Jayden Mitchell-Lawson broke through, beating Adam Alimi-Adetoro with a smart piece of skill, before trying to round the keeper but Sam Johnson anticipated it well and took the ball cleanly.
United had a chance just on the 45th minute as Reece Smith nearly squeezed into the box, but some good defending prevented him getting an opening for a shot.
HALF-TIME – Maidenhead United 0–0 FC Halifax Town
A bright start to the first half, Maidenhead nearly went one better in the opening 10 minutes of the second. A brilliant ball from Craig ross played Smith in behind, the latter tried to square it to McCoulsky, but his attempt was saved. The loose ball then fell to Abrahams who fired goalwards, his strike deflected off McCoulsky into the net, but he was adjudged to be in an offside position by the linesman.
After a very quiet 20 minutes, The Shaymen did eventually take the lead through Florent Hoti. A nice piece of interplay between Hoti and substitute Max Wright left the midfielder with room to drill his shot into the far corner.
McCoulsky was inches away from providing an instant response when he beat Johnson to the ball, but his shot bounced off the outside of the post and behind.
In the dying embers of the game, a ball lifted to the back post found Will de Havilland whose acrobatic attempt failed to trouble Johnson.
FULL-TIME – Maidenhead United 0–1 FC Halifax Town
Maidenhead welcome Ebbsfleet United to York Road on Tuesday night in a huge game for The Magpies.

FC Halifax Town: Sam Johnson, Adam Senior, Jack Evans, Jamie Cooke, (Oluwabori 90’) Angelo Cappello (Galvin 77’), Will Smith, Florent Hoti (Pugh 90’), Adan George (Wright 64’), Adam Alimi-Adetoro (Cummings 61’), Billy Waters, Scott High
MEET THE OPPOSITION
The 2024/25 season starts now for Ebbsfleet United. Prior to Saturday’s tricky-looking assignment at Sutton United, the mood at the Kuflink Stadium looks to have improved following the appointment of Harry Whatling as successor to Danny Searle.
Searle fulfilled his brief of keeping the Fleet in the National League last season. He came in to replace promotion-winning manager Dennis Kutrieb but a poor start to the new campaign cost the former Aldershot Town boss his job. Four points from two home games since then might suggest that the Fleet board were right to pull the trigger. After one point from their first seven games, a club statement said: “The club would like to go on record as recognising the incredible job that Danny achieved last season in saving the club from relegation. It is with that very status in mind this season, however, that the decision has been made to part company with Danny after a start to the season which has fallen below expectations.
Midfielder Josh Wright was put in temporary charge for the home fixture against Aldershot Town the following day. The Fleet made a bright start against Searle’s former club; Rakish Bingham forced visiting goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst into a save, with Toby Edser firing the rebound over. Dewhurst also saved well from a Jim Kellerman free-kick with Ebbsfleet stopper Mark Cousins tipping Oliver Scott’s effort round a post. Cousins thwarted Josh Barrett and Hady Ghandour too as Ebbsfleet made it five games without a goal.
Prior to their match with Hartlepool United last Saturday, a full time replacement for Searle was quickly found. Harry Whatling – who had watched the draw with the Shots from the stand - will be assisted by former Spurs man David Kerslake while John Cotton has been named as first-team coach. Whatling remarked: “It’s a brilliant setup at Ebbsfleet and it was really important to align myself with a club that allows me to play football on the front foot and the way I want to play it. I want to develop people here, and what I saw on the pitch on Tuesday night (against Aldershot) I loved the commitment, the honesty and work rate, and the quality on show. It was a marker for the bare minimum I want to see and now myself, David and John can’t wait to get started in front of the Fleet fans on home soil against Hartlepool on Saturday.”
And what a start it was. Rakish Bingham got Watling off to the perfect start as he fired the club to a first victory of the season at the ninth attempt with a win over The Pools. Anthony Mancini and Joe Grey both went close for the visitors early on, but Ben Chapman and Lewis Page threatened for the hosts. Ebbsfleet went ahead when Pools old boy Bingham fired them into the lead five minutes before the break with their first goal in five games. Dan Dodds came close to an equaliser for Darren Sarll’s men 12 minutes after the restart and striker Mani Dieseruvwe passed up a glorious opportunity as time ran down. However, Chapman and Greg Cundle might have increased Ebbsfleet’s advantage as they held on to claim a hugely significant 1-0 win.
Tonight’s match may represent a second road-trip in four days, but tonight’s visitors have enjoyed their trips to SL6. They are unbeaten in the Royal Borough in seven visits since Danny Green’s goal decided a Conference South encounter on 21st April 2014.
The Gaffer – Harry Watling
Appointed manager at the Kuflink Stadium 12 days ago following the early-season departure of Danny Searle. Watling earned his UEFA B licence at age 18, UEFA A licence at 26 and his UEFA Pro licence at 33, which at the time made him one of the youngest coaches in England to have such coaching licences . Watling went on to work as an academy coach with Chelsea from 2009 to 2014, Millwall from 2014 to 2018, and West Ham United from 2018, before becoming head coach of USL Championship side Hartford Athletic on 13th January 2021
After joining Hartford Athletic he won his first match in charge 3–2 against New York Red Bulls II. Watling broke several club records in his first season in charge of The Athletic, including most goals scored in a regular season and most clean sheets. Hartford finished 5th narrowly missing out on the play offs. In June 2022, Watling resigned from his role as Hartford and subsequently worked under Michael Beale at Queens Park Rangers and SPL giants Rangers.
THREE TO WATCH
This is the centre-back’s second spell with the club after he returned on a season-long loan from York City in summer 2024. He made 24 appearances for the Fleet in an earlier loan spell here from AFC Bournemouth during the first half of the 2019/20 season. The defender came through Bournemouth’s academy and. has since played for Scunthorpe United, Southend United, Weymouth, Aldershot Town and England C.
Experienced forward who opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw between our sides at the Kuflink last season. Poleon has played more than 200 matches in the EFL. An ex-Chelsea and Southend United youth player, he played 36 times for Leeds United across three seasons in the Championship from 2012-15. Subsequently played in the EFL with Bury, Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic, AFC Wimbledon and Bradford City
Scored the late winner as the Fleet triumphed at York Road in January. Samuel began his career in Reading’s youth ranks and enjoyed loan spells with clubs including Gillingham before a three-year stay with Blackburn Rovers, helping the club to promotion from League One. A further stay with Gillingham preceded a spell in Scotland in the SPL with Ross County before joining the Fleet.

OPPONENT
REWIND
In terms of fixtures between our two sides, as far as Magpies fans are concerned there can only be one match which springs immediately to mind above all others.
When the Magpies travelled to the Fleet for a top-of-the-table clash on 19th November 2016 they were eight points clear of the Stonebridge Road outfit who had a game in hand. The Fleet had finished second in the Vanarama National League South the previous season and had agonizingly lost the play-off final at home on penalties to Kent neighbours Maidstone United.
Ebbsfleet were promotion favourites, but United had started well and – to the surprise of many outside the club and maybe a number inside too - topped the division, with just one loss in their first 18 league outings. A large and raucous away following followed the team around the M25 and they were even louder just seven minutes in when fans favourite Sean Marks nodded home Harry Pritchard’s cross. At the other end, ‘keeper Carl Pentney was on top form, but even he was unable to prevent Sean Shields from scoring on 23 minutes to make it 1-1. Game on.
Four minutes later though, another Marks header from another Pritchard delivery put the Magpies back in front in a breathless first half. If anything, the second period was to be even more dramatic. As the rains fell on the Magpies fans gathered at the uncovered Swanscombe End, urging their team on, the on-pitch action turned into a tetchy battle. United had James Comley sent off in the 63rd minute and The Fleet levelled again through Bradley Bubb on 77 minutes when they had a one-man advantage.
The pendulum swung again when Mark Phillips was sent off with ten minutes remaining for a foul on United’s top-scorer Dave Tarpey. With barely two minutes left of normal time, Maidenhead won it. Sean Marks it was who won the game for United, and reflecting on his career whilst speaking to Shay Bottomley at the Maidenhead Advertiser some time after he admitted: “my most memorable goal must be the last-minute winner away to Ebbsfleet to complete my hattrick. I remember Sammy (Barratt) signalling a long throw and Deano (Inman) flicking it on and gambling for a diving header and it went in! It was a great feeling to get a hat-trick against our title rivals on their patch.”
The Fleet have had much the better of recent fixtures since then, Maidenhead winning just one of the subsequent nine matches between the sides. That run included a measure of revenge for the Fleet who took that title-race in 2016/17 to the final day thanks to a deserved 2-1 win at York Road given to them by second half goals by Andy Drury and Dave Winfield after United had led through Dean Inman’s header in front of nearly 4,000 spectators. In fact, Maidenhead have only ever won once in eleven matches against Gravesend/Ebbsfleet here. The overall record is six wins and six draws for Maidenhead in 22 encounters. If there was ever a time to start putting that abysmal home record right then it is tonight!

Welcome to the New Season!
It’s our 8th in the National League. An incredible achievement that we’ll look to build on this year.
The support of the fans is critical - our home energy is crucial to create a positive environment to spur the team on.
Banter with the opposition fans and players is part and parcel of the game - and should never change. However, we’ve had numerous incidents last year, that have impacted fans enjoymentand hit the club in the pocket!
We will be taking action against fans that engage in shouting derogatory, homophobic and unacceptable language and engaging in activity that’s an offence - throwing items, including coins - it’s not funny, big or clever.
Maidenhead United Supporters Group (MUSG) - and we encourage all supporters - to identity fans that engage in this activity - they’ll be asked to leave and not return.
We want our match day experiences at Maidenhead United to be enjoyable for all - let’s create an amazing experience and get behind the team - take positive actions; learn the club songs, encourage participation amongst your friends and make a difference.
We, MUSG, will be present at all Home Games and in amongst the fans. Ideally, we want to focus on the match, so don’t be ‘one’ otherwise you won’t be back!

MUSG UPDATE
Maidenhead United Supporters Group (MUSG) is the name of the new fan-led group dedicated to enhancing the experience that MUFC supporters have with their club and supporting the club in all its endeavours.
MUSG have already seen a 50% increase in membership this season, which is really positive. MUSG is now looking to grow representation across all teams operating under the MUFC banner.
MUSG are running coordinated away travel to Boston United FC on Saturday 28th September. This is our first ever visit to the home of The Pilgrims. We note that many Magpies fans had disrupted and frustrating train journeys to and from Tamworth last Saturday on our expensive and unreliable railways. Leave the car at home, ditch the awkward train journey to Lincolshire and travel in comfort with fellow Magpies to Boston.
It’s just £25 Junior (U16s) / £35 Adult MUSA Members (£5 more for non-members).
Payment is available by cash/card/bank transfer - please see one of the MUSG Team inside the York Road turnstiles opposite the Kelme Merchandising Stand during all home games or email: musgyorkroad@gmail.com
Please visit us today, join MUSG, buy a badge, a 50/50 draw ticket and a Golden Goal ticket and have a chat with us about our activities for the season. We are looking into the viability of further coordinated travel to away matches prior to Christmas – keep an eye our on the website, our programmes notes and our ‘X’ account, @MUSG_YorkRoad
LEAGUE TABLE
ON THIS DAY
By Maurice Cann
Dave Tarpey netted his 14th and 15th goals of the season as the Magpies eased to a 3-0 National League South victory over visitors Weston-super-Mare today in 2016. The visitors had just sacked head coach Ryan Northmore after a dismal run of results but made a spirited start with efforts from Joe McClennan and Dayle Grubb going close. Tarpey broke the deadlock in the 38th minute collecting a pass from Sean Marks to fire a low shot past Luke Purnell. A cross-cum-shot from Kieran Forbes on 57 minutes doubled Maidenhead’s lead before Tarpey netted the third from the spot in the final minute after Jordon Cox was bundled over in the area.
Revenge was exacted at Tooting & Mitcham United today in 1996 with a 5-1 Isthmian League 1st Division win at Sandy Lane; exactly five years earlier Tooting had inflicted a 3-0 defeat at York Road sending Maidenhead to the bottom of the table. Things did not start promisingly when Richards gave the hosts the lead after just five minutes, however the tides had very much changed with new joint managers Alan Devonshire and Martyn Busby at the helm. Chuk Aguosi equalised four minutes later then put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute with a hard, low shot from 25 yards.
John Ruggins made it 3-1, atoning for an earlier miss with an opportunist strike on 36 minutes to put Maidenhead well in command at the break. Worse was to follow for Tooting early in the second half when keeper Lee Orkney was sent off for fouling Ruggins in the area when clean through, Mark Harrison thumped home the resulting penalty. Huggins completed the rout in the 82nd minute converting a Garry Attrell cross with a deft header to return to top spot.
Goals from Walton and Creed saw Maidenhead FC enjoy a comfortable 2-0 FA Cup preliminary round victory over the 2nd Coldstream Guards at York Road today in 1898. The Guards had the choice of venue being drawn first out of the hat but agreed for the tie to be played at Maidenhead after accepting what is described as a “consideration” by the Berkshire club. The ‘red and blacks’ offered another “substantial “consideration” to Wolverton in the next round to save on travelling fees, however the Buckinghamshire club declined the offer leading to Maidenhead withdrawing from the competition.
