Maidenhead United’s Academy enjoyed another successful night in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday, 23rd October at York Road, winning their Third Qualifying Round tie by a 3-0 margin against Eastbourne United. Aaron O’Brien’s young Magpies have therefore qualified for the First Round Proper for the first time since 2019 and they have been rewarded with a home tie
against Burgess Hill Town which will be played on Thursday, 7th November 2024 (7:45pm)
The Magpies are looking to emulate the Youth Cup runs of 2018/19 and 2019/20 where they reached the Third Round Proper in successive seasons with a squad which featured the likes of Reece Smith and Bradley Keetch eventually being eliminated by the Academies of Nottingham Forest and Oxford United respectively
United – who triumphed 4-3 in a thriller at Wealdstone in the previous round –showed resilience to reach the interval goalless after a first half largely dominated by the spirited visitors but Maidenhead took control in the second period, opening the scoring early in the second half thanks to Enzo Pashaj’s finish when put through one-on-one with the visiting ‘keeper The impressive Quaye Vine added a second with just over 15 minutes to play as the Magpies bossed the second period, and there was further gloss put on the scoreline when substitute Joe Reid went round the ‘keeper to slot home from a tight angle
Today’s game starts a busy schedule of six games in eight days here at York Road Tomorrow, Maidenhead United Women entertain Abingdon United in a 2pm kickoff in the league. On Tuesday, 5th November, we entertain Derby County Under 23s in our second National League Cup fixture. Reduced admission prices will apply for this 7:30pm kick-off, check out ethicalticketing.org/maidenhead-united-fc for further details. The aforementioned FA Youth Cup tie on Thursday 7th will be £5 admission for adults, £2 concessions
On Saturday 9th November we entertain high-flying Forest Green Rovers in the first ever league fixture between the sides, and then on Sunday 10th November our Women are at home again in the FA Women’s National League Division 1 South West against Keynsham Town (1:30pm) After the women’s game, Stripes Bar will be hosting the 2024 York Road Family Fireworks.
It's back to York Road this afternoon after a disappointing trip to Yeovil last weekend We felt that the team that were unbeaten in eight before that trip didn’t turn up on the day. The home side had more intent in the press and quality on the ball. We’re not going to read too much into this as we’d been on a good run previously, but it is certainly something we are going to work on in training. One positive was that we scored from a set piece again, something we have been sharp on recently It is an area of the game that we have to exploit if we can After getting that equalizer we felt that we might be able to get something out of that game but it wasn’t to be
Before that Yeovil match a busy period saw us entertain Oldham the previous Tuesday night - another playoff-chasing team. We felt that we weathered the storm throughout the game against a particularly good side who had only lost once in eight games before coming to us. We knew it was going to be a tough battle, but we went 2-0 up. What you want to try and do is try and get into halftime 2-0 up, but they scored right on the stroke of half-time, which didn't help
We felt we defended really well - perhaps a slight contradiction seeing as we let in two goals They both were from set pieces - probably two set pieces we can do better with - but overall, we thought it was a really good defensive display We‘ve tended to come out slowly in second halves recently, but I don't think that was the case this time. I just thought they were a particularly good side and they penned us in for much of the game. We had spells where we were able to get Reece Smith and Sammy Barratt on the ball to create things, but it wasn't enough over 90 minutes against one of the sides you would imagine is going to be challenging to go up this season.
Today we face another full-time side Oldham were able to come down on the Monday, have a leisurely stroll and do things the way they wanted to do in preparation for the game For us as a part-time side, we finish training, we go to work in our day jobs, and we turn up here after work to play again
I was lucky enough to play for this afternoon’s opposition in the National League on loan from Brentford as a youngster. I spent a month at Crawley, I enjoyed my time there but was recalled as Brentford had a managerial change. My best FA Cup run came as part of Martin Allen’s squad at Brentford. We reached the Fifth Round and drew Premier League Southampton. Martin said he’d swim in the Solent if we got a result there, and he was as good as his word after a 2-2 draw!
York City became the third different leaders of the Vanarama National League in a week as they left it late to clinch victory in a thrilling Yorkshire derby on an afternoon punctuated by late goals around the division Jamie Cooke had put hosts Halifax ahead after 14 minutes, cutting on to his right foot before lashing home from the edge of the box. Florent Hoti had chances to double Halifax’s lead but was twice denied by City keeper Harrison Male. Instead Malachi Fagan-Walcott scored in the first minute of stoppage time from a corner and Ollie Pearce headed in a dramatic winner five minutes later.
Previous leaders Forest Green lost the top spot after Ryan Inniss’ first-half dismissal ultimately proved costly in a draw at Woking Rovers looked set for a long afternoon when defender Inniss was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge after just 21 minutes But Steve Cotterill’s side were leading at the break after Christian Doidge flicked the ball into the path of Kyle McAllister, who cut inside before slotting the ball into the bottom corner in the 42nd minute Woking made a triple substitution at the break and were level in the 53rd minute when the impressive Dan Moss looped in a header, but they could not find a winner in a second half of few chances.
Barnet kept up with the pace as Nicke Kabamba’s early strike and a second from Ben Coker just before the break appeared to have steered the Bees back to winning ways after two straight defeats But visitors Rochdale stirred in the second period with Liam Hogan seeing an effort booted off the line before Ian Henderson seized on a weak back-pass to narrow the deficit on 70 minutes Rochdale’s brave attempt to rescue a point saw both Tarryn Allarakhia and Courtney Senior hit the woodwork in injury time as the hosts just about managed to hold firm.
Gateshead and Oldham both recorded single-goal home victories to consolidate their places in the top seven with Yeovil now taking up the final play-off place after their victory over the Magpies. There was some consolation for Alan Devonshire however as none of the bottom five could record victories Boston and Wealdstone were both denied at the death away from home It took an injury time Chris Maguire penalty to rescue ten-man Eastleigh at home to the Pligrims, an outcome which saw Boston boss Ian Culverhouse lose his job on Monday The Stones were two up at bottom-markers Ebbsfleet but Aaron Cosgrave pulled one back with four minutes remaining and Kwame Thomas snatched a point at the death to deny the visitors back-to-back wins.
Will Davies scored the only goal – assisted by former Magpie Josh Coley - against his old club Braintree for Sutton United and it was a miserable first home game in charge for AFC Fylde gaffer Kevin Phillips as his side shipped five at home to Altrincham, the Coasters never recovering from Regan Linney’s first-half hat trick.
A midtable affair at the Suit Direct Stadium was settled in favour of Hartlepool by Emmanuel Dieseruvwe’s braceagainst inconsistent Aldershot Meanwhile Southend made it three unbeaten in the National League games after winning at home to Tamworth thanks to early goals from Aribi Pepple and Oli Coker
There have been goals galore for Maidenhead United Women First and Development teams recently, with both sides starting out on their quest for Berks & Bucks silverware.
MUWFC have never won the senior county cup before, having lost three times in the final. They reached the final again in 2020, a match which was never played due to the COVID crisis The First team entertained Tier 6 outfit Milton United at Bisham Abbey on Sunday 20th October and triumphed with an emphatic 13-1 margin in the Senior Cup Hat-tricks from forwards Macey-Nikiah Walters, Izzy Stockton and Tia Johnson did the damage whilst long-serving midfielder Amy Saunders weighed in with a rare goal, the scoring completed by Amelie Mayani, Emily Norfolk and an unfortunate Milton own goal The Magpies will now travel to Beaconsfield Town in the last eight on Sunday, 17th November - the Buckinghamshire side currently unbeaten at the top of Tier 6 Southern Regional Women’s Football League Division One North.
In the BBFA Trophy the same afternoon, Maidenhead’s Development team bossed their home tie with Aylesbury United at Cox Green Leisure Centre. Ryan Robinson’s team scored three in each half – Liberty Dieppe scoring twice before Lauren Evans added the third. In the second half Amber Saunders and Jazz King scored before Dieppe completed her hattrick The Development team will travel to Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League Division Three North outfit Holmer Green in the quarter-finals on Sunday 17th November On Sunday 27th October the Development team defeated Cheltenham Town Reserved 4-3 in the FAWNL Reserve Plate (Mayani (3), Molly McKeever).
Meanwhile, the Magpies women were delighted to welcome ‘Chicago Magpie’ Kyle McTigue back to the Royal Borough last week Kyle first discovered and fell in love with the Magpies when visiting the UK in a ground hopping tour a few years ago and made his second return visit to take in the York Road draws against Hartlepool United and Oldham Athletic. United fans will have spotted his distinctive Chicago ‘Maidenhead U Fire fanatic also took in his first ever Maidenhead United Women’s match, travelling over to Bisham Abbey to see the women hit those impressive 13 goals against Milton United The team were thrilled to pose for pictures with Kyle at the end of the game and we all look forward to seeing Kyle again next time!
The visitors got us underway, and it was Oldham who had the first opening of the game. Mike Fondop got a shot off on the swivel – but it flew harmlessly over the bar. With just under a quarter of an hour gone, United took the lead through James Golding. Our number 26 fainted to shoot on the edge of the area, completely fooling his man, before bending a looping shot into the far side netting. Minutes later, Oldham nearly drew level as Tom Conlon’s low cross landed at the feet of Fondop, but the forward failed to hit the target
United had a great chance to double their lead on the break as Sam Barratt cleared an Oldham cross, chased down his own clearance and charged over the halfway line Barratt delivered a cross onto the foot of Shawn McCoulsky, but he couldn’t keep his shot down Just seconds later, United did have it in the net courtesy of the McCoulsky but the linesman’s flag cut short any celebrations
An end-to-end half with chances aplenty got even better for United as their lead was doubled in the 37th minute. Some positive play from Smith created a shooting opportunity from a narrow angle. He blasted his shot off the post, but the rebound bounced off Manny Monthe and into the back of the net.
Just before the interval, the Latics pulled one back and it was Monthe putting it in the right net this time He latched onto a hooked ball back into the area, taking one touch to control before smashing past Craig Ross The second half started just like the first with a Mike Fondop chance on goal The striker latched onto a cross from Jake Caprice, this time his shot was deflected over by some brilliant defending from Kevin Lokko.
The visitors had burst out the blocks in the second half and nearly equalised, but Kane Drummond failed to take advantage of a glorious opportunity. Some incisive play found Drummond at the back post all alone, but, somehow, he managed to strike the post when it seemed easier to score It was all Oldham up until the hour mark A scramble in the area led to the ball landing at the feet of Mark Kitching on the edge of the area Kitching looked to bend his effort into the top corner With Craig Ross stranded, the crossbar came to his and United’s rescue
Maidenhead’s first chance of the half came when Casey Pettit met Nathan Ferguson’s fierce free kick but, slightly off-balance, the former couldn’t turn his shot goalwards. With ten minutes to go, Oldham did draw level through Charlie Raglan. A deep corner found the centre-half at the back post, leaving him with the easy task of heading home.
United’s chances were sparse in the second half, but with two minutes to go they went close A long ball from Ross was perfect for Smith to run onto Driving to the byline, Smith delivered a cross across the six-yard box but no one could quite get a touch In the depths of added time, United nearly won it as McCoulsky headed over a dinked Smith cross, the linesman’s flag was up so the goal wouldn’t have counted either way
Full-time: Magpies 2-2 Oldham Athletic
Crawley Town become this afternoon only the fifth EFL side to play an FA Cup tie at York Road, following in the footsteps of Aldershot Town, Port Vale, Portsmouth and Rotherham United Each of those ties has taken place in the last 14 seasons, which coincidentally is precisely the same amount of time that the Red Devils of West Sussex have been an EFL club
Crawley joined the Southern League in 1963 and reached the National League 41 years later Their spell at National League level was initially tough and was punctuated by points deductions in three successive seasons. Former Boston United manager Steve Evans was appointed in 2007 and by 2010/11 he’d built a promotion winning side. Town followed this up with promotion the following season too, going through EFL League Two at the first attempt.
Their most famous FA Cup run came in this period, in their final campaign as a Non-League side Starting off in the Fourth Qualifying Round, they disposed of Newport County and Guiseley before eliminating EFL sides Swindon Town, Derby County and Torquay United In the Fifth Round Proper they pulled out the plum tie of Manchester United, away Crawley lost that tie against Alex Ferguson’s side 1–0 in front of nearly 75,000 spectators – including 9,000 Crawley fans - though they were denied a draw when Richard Brodie's header hit the bar in the 93rd minute
The following season, Evans men reached the last sixteen of the Cup once again, this time losing 2-0 at home to Premier League Stoke City. In 2021 they defeated Premier League opposition in the FA Cup for the first time in their history when Leeds United came a cropper at the Broadfield Stadium. Three second-half goals rewarded a fantastic performance from John Yems' side Nick Tsaroulla, playing only his seventh game in senior football, set the ball rolling, beating three Leeds defenders to fire home a superb solo opener United keeper Kiko Casilla's error allowed Ashley Nadesan to double the lead before Jordan Tunnicliffe added a third for Crawley, who could have won by more against Marcelo Bielsa's side
Recent campaigns have been rather less enjoyable for Crawley, that is until last season. At the end of 2023/24, today’s visitors won promotion back to League One with a deserved 2-0 victory against Crewe Alexandra at Wembley. Former Magpie Danilo Orsi followed up his semi-final hat-trick against MK Dons with a cute finish with the outside of his foot to give the Reds a first-half lead, his 25th goal of the season Liam Kelly sealed a fine performance with a deserved goal to send Crawley back to the third tier of English football for the first time since 2015
Robert Elliot took the reigns at Crawley Town on 1st October, succeeding promotion-winning manager Scott Lindsay who moved on to ambitious Milton Keynes Dons Elliot had previously enjoyed success in the dug out at Gateshead, taking over the good work of Mile Williamson who ironically had also left his role to take charge of the Dons. Gateshead finished sixth in the National League under Elliott’s management – despite a 2-1 defeat here at York Road on the penultimate weekend of the season – but were barred from taking part in the play-offs due to issues surrounding their lease at the International Stadium. Some solace however came as Eliot led The Heed to victory in the FA Trophy, defeating Solihull Moors on penalty kicks
Elliot was a goalkeeper by trade A Londoner, he stared at Charlton Athletic –making more than 100 appearances in all competitions - and moved to Newcastle United in 2011 Winning four international caps with the Republic of Ireland, Elliott subsequently moved to Watford in January 2021 He left the Hertfordshire side at the end of the 2021/22 season and was appointed Technical Director at Gateshead in August 2022.
Toby Mullarkey is a defender who began his career in theacademyatCrewe Alexandra After a period withEverton, Mullarkey returned to Crewe in 2013 and subsequently played non-league football forNantwich Townand Altrincham, before signing forRochdalein January 2023, making his league debut in a 2–1 defeat atSalford Cityon 4th February 2023. Following relegation to theNational Leaguewith Rochdale at the end of the 2022/23 season, Mullarkey signed forGrimsby Townand on 9th July 2024, Mullarkey joined Crawley.
Jay Williams is a midfielder who joinedNorthampton Townat the age of 13 In November 2020, Williams signed forNational League NorthclubKettering Town and subsequently signed forLeague TwosideHarrogate Town before spells with AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Banbury United, and Brackley Town. On 18 July 2023 he signed for Crawley Town, playing 90 minutes in their play-off final victory in May.
Gavin Holohan is an experienced 32 year old midfielder who joined Crawley Town in the summer of 2024. The former Hull City man enjoyed spells with the likes of Drogheda United, Cork City, Galway United and Waterford in his home country of Ireland before joining Hartlepool United Winning the 2021 National League play-off final with Pools and repeated the trick 12 months later with Grimsby Town Holohan scored to penalties at Premier League Southampton to secure a famous FA Cup win for the Mariners in March 2023.
Maidenhead United’s eight-game unbeaten run came to an end on a disappointing afternoon at Huish Park Alan Devonshire made one change from the side which drew against Oldham, swapping out Owen Cochrane for Thierry Latty-Fairweather Tristan Abrahams also returned to the squad among the substitutes
Yeovil would have the first chance of the game when Jake Wannell headed over the bar from a corner in the sixth minute, but the hosts would only have to wait another four to open the scoring. Aaron Jarvis would work his way past the United defence, firing home past Craig Ross.
United’s first chance came in the 26th minute, and it proved to be a successful one Sam Barratt whipped a dangerous free kick towards Kevin Lokko, who converted with a glancing header past Yeovil ‘keeper Ollie Wright
A quiet first half would end with a fantastic save by Ross A quick turn-and-shoot by Jarvis forced the United goalkeeper into a diving, one-handed stop to prevent the hosts from retaking the lead just before half-time.
The second half would be a disappointing affair for Maidenhead, and a sign of things to come came in the 52nd minute when Jarvis grabbed his second. A Kofi Shaw cross would find the Glovers’ striker to fire home and retake the lead.
Yeovil would secure their first win over Maidenhead in the Vanarama National League just after the hour mark, when Charlie Cooper’s thunderous effort from just outside the box proved to be unstoppable
The scoreline prompted Devonshire to make a string of substitutions, using all five for the first time under the new regulations. While fresh legs brought United closer to Wright’s goal, the Yeovil ‘keeper was left largely untroubled throughout much of the second half.
Full-time: Yeovil Town 3-1 Magpies
Long-serving (suffering?) Magpies fan Matthew Foster looks back at the good, the bad and the notorious in United’s recent FA Cup past
When invited to write something about my early experiences of the FA Cup as a Maidenhead United fan, I initially struggled to think. The mid-90s was my formative time, so perhaps it wasn't surprising. Records show the Magpies went nearly six whole years, from 15th September 1992 to 5th September 1998, without winning a single FA Cup match – losses to Newbury, Havant Town (twice – the second of which saw my Grandad presented, pre-game, with a commemorative shield to mark 50 years as a supporter), Thame, and Newport AFC That's something for me and other fans to remember if/when we get blasé about drawing League One clubs in the First Round Proper, be it Oxford United away last season or Crawley at York Road
As it is, our 4-2 defeat to two-divisions-higher Kingstonian in the 1998/99 3rd Qualifying Round is probably my most vivid, earliest, MUFC-related FA Cup memory. Michael Banton was among the goals down the Canal End, and it was 2-2 at the interval, but Michael Bolger didn't exactly cover himself in glory between our sticks. Attendance was 717 on a windy but sunny October afternoon (26 years ago, to the day, as I write!). The crowd at our previous home league game had been less than a third of that
Since then, we've experienced the usual gamut of Cup emotions: conceding flukey winners (Salisbury at York Road in 1999 – afforded a short write-up in a national broadsheet, which blew my tiny little mind at the time); two penalty shootout wins (kudos to those who can name both opponents); lamentable first-time exits (my Dad remarked he'd never seen Roger Coombs so dejected as when we lost to Welling at home in 2002, while Bashley were struggling in the division below when they knocked us out at their place in 2008); unlikely hat-trick heroes (left-back Leon Solomon at Godalming in 2011); unlikely scorelines (7-4 defeat at Halifax in 2021); tremendous highs (James Mulley's 94th-minute equaliser and iconic celebration at Port Vale in 2015, after beating Winchester in a replay, Blackfield & Langley away, and then Woking at York Road in monsoon-like conditions) and inexcusable, eradefining lows (H*rsh@m)
No Second Round Proper appearance, though A glaring omission We've had the occasional near miss, more routinely since entering the competition in the later rounds following promotion to the National League. Leading Rotherham until the 70th minute at a rain-soaked York Road in 2019 comes to mind. However, a 3-2 home defeat to Dulwich (not Hamlet) in November 1886 remains our most 'recent' 2nd Round showing.
138 years! Hopefully not, 'and counting'.
The Premier Midweek Floodlit League – a league that ‘did exactly what it said on the tin’ – existed between 1965 and 1978 for teams operating in the south east of England The Magpies entered for the first time in 1968/69, placed into Section B with Walton & Hersham, Southall, Hampton, Wokingham Town, Guildford City, Horsham and Crawley Town.
The first – and to date only – matches between Maidenhead and Crawley therefore took place in this competition. The Magpies, in what turned out to be their last season under the long and successful managerial tenure of Len Townsend, were a middling Athenian League side Crawley meanwhile were embarking on their sixth season in the Southern League and at the end of that ‘68/69 season the Sussex club were promoted to the Premier Division of that league for the first time
The first of the two fixtures in the PMFL took place at Crawley’s former Town Mead home on 7th January 1969 The previous attempt at playing the fixture had been abandoned at half time due to a waterlogged pitch but the Maidenhead Advertiser reporter on that subsequent fixture described the surface as being “no better – and probably worse” than what the two sides had had to contend with previously.
Semi-professional Crawley had the better of it against the Maidenhead amateurs, winning the game in the first half with a brace of goals scored down the pronounced Town Mead slope By the time the return came around at York Road on 3rd April 1969, United had won only three of their ten matches in the competition and Crawley were to repeat the same score they had notched up in the first match
Again, the damage was done in the first half. After 27 minutes former Reading player Mick Tomkys found Haining with a free-kick, the Crawley man volleying home the opener. The second came when Blakes shot through a crowd of players. In the second period, Noel Shiels forced a good save from former United ‘keeper Phil Patrick (40 appearances for MUFC between 1961 and 1962) before Magpies legend Brian Pitts hit a post The ‘paper insisted United had deserved a point for their second half endeavours, but it was the Southern Leaguers who took home the three-point haul awarded for an away win, to add to the two they’d taken for their similar success at home It wasn’t enough for Crawley to top the table though –Walton & Hersham took section B and subsequently won the three-team play-off
Maidenhead United Supporters Group (MUSG) is the name of the new fan-led group dedicated to enhancing the experience that MUFC supporters have with their club and supporting the club in all its endeavours.
MUSG have already seen a 50% increase in membership this season, which is really positive. MUSG is now looking to grow representation across all teams operating under the MUFC banner
The recent eight match unbeaten run in league and cup came to an end at Yeovil Town last weekend. We do have EFL opposition to look forward to in the FA Cup today and this afternoon will be your last chance to book in person for the Early Bird rate for coach travel to Eastleigh on 21st December The price for Early Birds will be £20 for adults, £15 for under 16s
Please visit us today, join MUSG, buy a badge, a 50/50 draw ticket and a Golden Goal ticket and have a chat with us about our activities for the season Otherwise keep an eye out on the website, our programmes notes and our ‘X’ account, @MUSG YorkRoad
November 2nd has only produced one previous FA Cup encounter for Maidenhead United, but the solitary match certainly did not disappointWins over Wycombe Wanderers, RAF Uxbridge and Witney saw the Spartan Leaguers drawn at home to Hampstead in the divisional final The visitors, a successful Athenian League side were strong favourites to win but would be in for a shock as the Magpies tore them to shreds in an amazing first-half
Goals from Basil Day and Jack Palethorpe put Maidenhead 2-0 up in the opening ten minutes; the same two players helped themselves to two more goals before the half-time break. The visitors made a determined effort to get back into the game in the second half but were unable to breach the home defence. Palethorpe completed his hat trick in the closing minutes before a Len Allum penalty saw United record a sensational 6-0 win, much to the delight of the majority of the 3,000 attendees Hampstead FC were renamed Golders Green four years later and in 1946 adopted their current name – Hendon FC
The Magpies certainly came back down to earth in their next encounter on today’s date – a 7-1 Spartan League defeat to the Metropolitan Police in 1935 Trailing 5-0 at the break United had 80% of the play in the second half but conceded two more before a late consolation from Baigent did little to lift the gloom at Imber Court. A Dennis Webb hat trick saw Erith & Belvedere beaten 3-1 in 1946 – this was United’s first Corinthian League home game of the season due to involvement in various cup competitions. This victory saw a good run of results on November 2nd including a 2-1 Amateur cup win at Windsor & Eton in 1957; with the scores level at 1-1 the hosts were awarded a 78th minute penalty, however to the dismay of the home crowd inside-right Norman blasted his spot kick high over the bar and out of the ground They were made to pay in the final minute when Arthur Denton ran in to tap home after the Windsor keeper Winter failed to hold on to a shot from Terry Lambert (top right)
