Individual Work on the creation of a dragon boat club focused on the adaptive reuse of existing building at 1-3 Bank Street in Pyrmont, executed in 2023, under the supervision of Program Director, Matthew Mindrup.

Envisioned as a dedicated space for a dragon boat club, 'Syncope in Spaces: A Dialogue of Haptics and Hulls' emerges as an adaptive reuse project nestled in the banks of Blackwattle Bay. This undertaking redefines the traditional boat club, transforming it into an epicenter of heritage, and celebration. At core, this project aims to serve as a hub that stores the deposited memories of dragon boating, utilizing forms and sensory experiences to create a dynamic continuum that allows for the meaningful experiencing of architecture and space.

Central to this transformation is the critical negotiation of memory and forgetting, articulated through the translation of rhythms into physical spaces to ignite a sense of community. The project commits in preserving the historical narrative of the existing building on site through the selective demolition and recombination of materials to forge its new identity.

Existing concrete slab sits is used across all three buildings.

Existig Red Brick can be salvaged and recycled into new structures.

Roof utilizes corrugated aluminium steel for shelter against rain and the elements.

Sandstones line the cliffedge on to Blackwattle bay. This material is profound in maintaining the essence of the site.

Existing building volume from 13 Banks Street, Pyrmont to be adaptively reused as a dragon boating club and school.

Compartmentalizing previous building through the creation of grids, protruding upwards using timber columns.

Using the existing building to create frames and “storage spaces” for hulls.

Establishing a series of spaces to fit within the grids, emphasizing the idea of boat hulls as shelter.

New structures are alternated between existing structure creating juxtaposition between old and new.

SYNCOPE IN SPACES

This adaptive reuse project, takes cues from the organization of boat storage which inspires the establishments of grids that allow spaces to be compartmentalized. These spaces take the form of boat hulls occupying the existing building, creating a dialogue of being on-and-off rhythm. Thus, the design orchestrates a contemplative journey for occupants, intertwining remnants of history with modern nuances, continually gravitating them towards the water, all while exploring the interplay of past and present in its design.

1. 100x100mm seasoned hardwood post secured to reinforced concrete pier using a galvanized stirrup post support.

2. 300x150mm steel I-beams utilized as floor joists, fabricated from structural-grade steel, secured at intervals to main structural members using bolted connections.

3. 200x200mm exposed hardwood timber column.

4. 50x25mm timber battens and 30x20mm counter battens.

The club features a central atrium designed to accentuate the celebratory nature of the dragon boat festival. This hearth fosters an immersive environment that enables the artform to not only be observed, but experienced.

This report documents the 3D modelling process of the proposed dragon boat club, taking into consideration dimensions and materiality to achieve variations in form and texture. The documentation explores techniques employed using laser-cutting to achieve the varying physical characteristics of the design, ensuring that each aspect of the model authentically reflects the intended architectural vision in terms of structural and aesthetic appeal.

Comfort in Eccentricity | Integrating surrealistic elements within the confines of home, this project encourages residents to embrace their individuality and revel in the unexpected. As an extension of its client - a passionate painter and a , the design envisages to create a semi-open space adorned by unconventional furniture and installations, regardless of the confines of the site. With unusual positioned structures to cater for programs, Nook's alcove creates a unique and memorable experience for incoming clients, patrons, and homeowners - one that is visually appealing and emotionally liberating.

A Leap into New Living | The design encourages the use of abstract elements including the placements of lavatory and waiting quarters in the backyard. Furthermore, the skylight and glass installation spanning down the house ensures that sunlight is able to bleed from the top story to the basement. Thus, becoming the link and facilitator between the various floor levels.

Individual Work on replicating an apartment model within the Sydney CBD on the exploration of adaptive design and energy maximization in architecture, executed in 2022, under the supervision of Studio Coordinator, Jordan Lattouf.

The fundamentals of parametric modeling is explored through the use of Grasshopper to create dynamic and adaptive architectural design. The project delves into the parametric modelling of high-rises located in the Sydney CBD, in particular Cove Apartments - a 44 story pointed-elliptical residential block overlooking the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

As a property which serves as a residential space built at the core of the CBD, views and solar access become vital parameters in determining the tower's functionality. The successful integration of windows and building orientation can yield higher property value for Cove Apartments which is further analyzed and tested within the project.

Inspired by the interactive forces between dancer and ribbon, this paper model physically embodies the dynamics of twisting and twirling.

This project investigates the polarizing architectural style between minimalist and maximalist design. Each theatre explores the transformation, application, and manifestation of architectural materials in the performance space. The first theatre aims to emulate the aesthetic of tropical modern architecture through tactful use of wide-gauge glass, organic materials and lush vegetation - to which contrasts the second theatre's strong focus on faux and superficial materials.

The theatre facade showcases timber cladding as key material to embrace and align focus towards the nestling harmony with the surrounding natural ambience.

Once patrons enter the main entrance, the light is blocked by the array of vertical timber beams, projecting shadows to set the mood of the ensuing entertainment inside the open foyer.

The overflowing water reflected on the shiny metallic glasses appears virtually like an inverted mirror image bringing the focus on the pathway to the main entryway.

This project was prepared as part of a development application for the reconstruction of a terrace house, proposing a flexible, multi-generational 2-bedroom residence for its clients.

The design principle is based on the premise of enhancing overall openness and flexibility. This design approach is driven by two core principles including the preservation of heritage geometry and materials of the residence to retain its original form from the early 1900s, serving as a testament for creative and realistic design solutions that prioritizes environment and cultural sustainability as well as inclusivity.

Moving Meditation | Motion as an arousing quality becomes the premise of this architectural exploration, especially to decipher how bodily experience can be dissected or constructed as contemplating edifices or thought-provoking landscapes. The progression induces new information, which is exchanged, carried, and transformed as physical paper models.
