Wellsford Show returns in style Organisers of the Wellsford Country Show are celebrating the success of the November 19 event, promising that it will be back again next year. The A&P Show was a regular event on the Wellsford calendar for nearly 100 years but lapsed after organisers found it difficult to secure sponsorship and support. However, the gamble paid off for this year’s volunteer organisers, Lynette Gubb and Jo Wood, who decided to give the show “one more go”. For coverage see pages 24 & 25.

Mitchell and Martin off to Wellington Rodney will send not one, but two, representatives to Parliament after Saturday’s General Election.

The safe National Party seat has passed seamlessly from incumbent Lockwood Smith to first-time candidate Mark Mitchell, who polled 18,580 votes, or 53 percent of the candidate vote.

This was slightly down on Dr Smith’s 2008 result of 22,698 or 60 percent.

However, in the party vote, support for National increased from 59 percent to 62 percent in Rodney, compared to the national average of 48 percent.

five percent threshold, polling about seven percent. As number two on the party’s list behind leader Winston Peters, she will be one of eight NZ First representatives in the House.

Mr Mitchell has signalled improvements in infrastructure as his number one priority, particularly Penlink and the Puhoi to Wellsford road.

“I’ve already started working on Penlink and have arranged a meeting with a company from the Middle East which is involved in big infrastructure projects worldwide. I’d like them to look at the feasibility of Penlink as either a ‘build, operate and transfer’ or public-private partnership.

“We can’t wait for Auckland to deliver this project – it will have to be a local solution.”

Mrs Martin remains confident she can continue as a Local Board member and chair of the Mahurangi College Board of Trustees.

“I’ve had phone calls from all the other board members giving me their

“There’s a lot of cross-over in the responsibilities associated with both jobs. The local board will keep me in touch with baseline community feedback, which will be incredibly important for informing what I do in Parliament.

“All I can do is give it a go and if the community feels it’s not being wellrepresented, then I can resign from the board at anytime.”

Northland also remained loyal to National, with a convincing win by Mike Sabin who takes the place of long-serving MP John Carter, now NZ High Commissioner in Rarotonga.

Mr Sabin secured 56 percent of the candidate votes, with his nearest rival – Labour’s Lynette Stewart, sister of Winston Peters – polling 21 percent, followed by Pauline Evans for the Greens on 11 percent.

Warkworth got a taste of the Occupy Auckland campaign when Marion Mason brought her protest to the town last month.

The former Mahurangi College student, now based in Papakura but currently ‘free ranging’, describes herself as a child, youth and women’s advocate, and human rights campaigner. She set-up on a number of intersections around the town, where she loudly espoused clean rivers, a quality education for all NZ children and an end to corporate greed. She said she was getting a mixed response from passers-by and motorists, both for and against.

The three-year experiment began with school representatives visiting Ahuroa, Kaipara Flats and Red Beach schools to observe ICT use and choosing to emulate Ahuroa’s approach.

Each child will have an iPad, and software applications (“apps”) bought by the school, which will help to individualise learning programmes.

Personalised timetables can be shared, or monitored at the touch of a button.

Dave says parents agreed to pay $355 to cover a year of a three-year iPad lease, while around $15,000 required to upgrade the classroom and associated technology will be met by the school.

Students will still cover the core curriculum, including activities such as PE, dance and drama, and the impact on their learning will be closely monitored.

“They’ll do what they’ve always done, except that if technology can assist with that learning they have immediate access to it. It doesn’t mean they’ll be using their iPad five hours a day,” he says.

Ahuroa principal Melinda Bennett says Wellsford is just one of an increasing number of Auckland schools interested in her school’s ICT experience.

She was inspired by the potential of technology on a 2010 visit to California that demonstrated benefits of the iPod Touch in classrooms.

“I was blown away with the possibilities that a relatively cheap tool could open up by putting the internet in every child’s hands.”

introduced increasing numbers of iPods and iPads, allocating them to specific students to enable round-theclock access, with impressive results in student engagement, knowledge and creativity. Parents have backed the programme and at the start of this year, the school established an iPodper-two-student ratio, with six senior students trialling full-time access to iPads.

The results have been “phenomenal” says Melinda. The iPads enable easier internet browsing and access to more powerful processes such as graphing, spreadsheets, movie making and music composition.

Equipment was funded through the school’s ICT allocation and savings in other areas, like closure of its tiny library in favour of library cards for all, online catalogues and regular school trips to exchange books. Some parents also bought devices. Students now not only have access to more physical books, but can also download e-books instantly, Melinda says.

“It’s not just that ‘iPads are cool’, it’s that they complement the individualised style of timetabling and learning we were already practising.”

The touch screen devices are also more affordable than laptops and create less of a physical barrier.

Parent concerns about children losing their social skills quickly dissipate when they see students communicating through emails and “blogs” and discussing topics they’ve researched online, she says.

Sick students have even joined in with group teaching sessions via Skype from home.

Next year the school aims to get iPads for every Y6-8 child and teacher, with parents contributing $5 per week to equipment leases for the first time.

Middle and junior classes will have a mixture of iPads and iPods in each class at a one device to two students ratio.

Auckland Council has changed its mind about an earlier requirement for Warkworth’s annual rodeo and A&P show to gain resource consents, after determining that both had “existing use rights”.

Warkworth A&P Show secretary Marjorie Blythen says she and Warkworth Rodeo Club secretary Krista Fletcher spent around six-anda-half hours at the Council offices trying to negotiate their way through the required paperwork and many hours working through the process in their own time, before they were told the consents were no longer required.

“The change is brilliant news not just for organisers but for communities,” she says. “Now we go back to our normal annual permits and planning.

I just hope that commonsense will prevail permanently.”

Manager northern consenting and compliance Julie Bevan says neither event requires resource consents because they are conducted on sites specifically identified for the purpose and have established existing use rights prior to the introduction of the Auckland Council District Plan (Rodney Section). However, she says resource consents are still required for certain temporary events.

Rodney councillor Penny Webster says she wants to hear from anyone organising an event that hasn’t needed a resource consent before, but is now being asked for one.

Ms Bevan says as every event is different, organisers are encouraged to contact Council early in order to get all the information they need. Most resource consents can be processed within 20 working days, but some may take longer if further information is required and applications for very large events may need to be notified.

OFF THE RECORD Disappearing act One thing that has dramatically shrunk under Auckland Council’s watch is the marine reserve at Goat Island. While we recall it spanning 547 hectares, Council has it listed on its website as covering a massive five square metres.

Tweaking it The Rodney Local Board’s quarterly performance report raised more questions than it answered. Figures didn’t add up or make sense. With a great deal of resignation, board members passed the report with a request for some “further tweaking”.

The reporting officer promised that the next version would “make sense”.

The Council that tried to steal Christmas One of the promises made to all residents of Auckland, prior to amalgamation a year ago, was that there would be no deterioration in levels of service. If memory serves, the Mayor also stressed many times that his administration would be “an enabling” Council so that Auckland could “unleash” its full potential.

These are sounding like empty words in the light of the recent fiasco over resource consents for community events.

The cancellation of the Orewa Santa Parade and annual Orewa Boulevard Festival, the re-think by organisers on the future of the Silverdale fireworks and family day, and the added workload imposed on organisers of the Warkworth A&P and Warkworth Rodeo are the fallout from Auckland Council’s hardline on meeting consent requirements.

While there are some diverse reasons involved in the decisions around these events, and these cannot all be directed entirely at Council, the processes being imposed on event organisers are far from “enabling”. And let’s not forget, most of these hardworking representatives, at least here in Rodney, are volunteers.

There is no disputing that resource consent rules are

important. We all appreciate that issues such as health and safety, traffic management and waste management need to be properly addressed at any public event. But Council officers have the expertise to guide community volunteers through these processes; recently, some seem content to let people founder in a quagmire of paperwork.

Council needs to address this issue urgently and we need to know the outcome. Without clear and unequivocal assurances that communities can organise events without the impediment of rampant bureaucracy, there will be fewer events; and our communities will certainly be the poorer for it.

At a recent Omaha Forum meeting, Cr Penny Webster suggested that a Council officer in Auckland, “who didn’t understand how Rodney used to do things”, was responsible for the shambles. If this is the case, then perhaps Mr Brown needs to provide some of his staff with a dictionary. In there they would learn that enable means: To supply with the means, knowledge, or opportunity. Surely that’s not too much to ask in what is supposedly “the world’s most liveable city”.

The money represents the final allocation of funds from the Auckland Regional Services Trust (ARST).

It will also be involved in the assessment process, with final funding decisions likely to be made by the boards early next year.

Public invited to island weta release

A total of 25 wetapunga/giant weta will be released on Tiritiri Matangi on Saturday December 10.

Wetapunga are found only in NZ and when fully grown, can be two to three times the weight of a mouse. Department of Conservation community relations manager Liz Maire says the 25 adult or near-adult wetapunga being released on the island are part of a plan to start a new population to help safeguard this threatened species.

“They are the result of a successful captive breeding programme at Butterfly Creek in South Auckland, in partnership with DOC, community groups and the sponsors Greenfingers Garden Bags,” she says.

“The breeding stock was just nine wetapunga, collected from Hauturu/Little Barrier Island, the only place that they have survived in the wild. Other populations have succumbed to the onslaught of introduced predators.

“Getting wetapunga to Tiritiri Matangi will be an important step in the process of protecting these amazing animals for the future.”

Council encourages toxic waste collection

Two boxes of toxic 60-year-old bug spray and hundreds of kilograms of other dangerous chemicals are amongst the tonnes of household hazardous waste handed in to Auckland Council so far this year.

Solid waste business unit manager Jon Roscoe says the mobile HazMobile service, which supplements year-round hazardous waste disposal available at refuse transfer stations in Snells Beach, Silverdale and Waitakere, nets around 200,000kg of hazardous material annually, including thousands of old batteries and gas bottles and some particularly toxic chemicals.

“At the most recent collection, we received two unopened boxes of a bug spray dating from the late 1940s found by a man clearing out his grandfather’s shed, plus ‘antique’ insect spray – both contained DDT and lindane, which have been banned for decades.”

Residents on the Tawharanui Peninsula are being invited to form a Landcare group.

Auckland Council’s biosecurity community coordinator Malcolm Harrison told a Whangateau Forum meeting on November 18 that the group would add another layer of protection for the Tawharanui Regional Park.

It would work from the predator-proof fence back towards Leigh Road.

“By working outside the park, we hope to reduce encroachment into the park,” he said.

“The idea of setting up the group is in its formative stage and is being discussed with other groups such as Auckland Transport, WaiCare, Sustainable Catchments, Department of Conservation and TOSSI. We are also keen to get some feedback from landholders.”

Malcolm said animal and plant pest control – targeting possums, mustelids, climbing asparagus, woolly nightshade and moth plant – was likely to be a key focus for the group.

Seven large areas on the peninsula were already undertaking animal pest control.

He said the group’s boundaries were up for discussion, but were unlikely to include Omaha.

There are about 150 Landcare groups across NZ, who work together on land management issues.

A Landcare spokesperson says that when dealing with problems which extend beyond fences or natural boundaries, it makes sense to work together.

“A group working collectively can have a lot more effect than one person working on their own as reinfestation of weeds and pests is reduced if neighbours also work on control together. It also allows people to share ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm.”

Stalwarts saluted

TOSSI celebrated the opening of the Thompson Track at our November Sunday in the Park. The new track meanders through the Mangatawhiri wetlands, upstream from the lagoon amidst plantings that TOSSI instigated in 2007. Several boardwalk sections form crucial links along the way. Together with the new lagoon boardwalk, these were constructed by TOSSI volunteers led by Roger Williams. The new track is named in recognition of Rhys and Sheila Thompson, stalwarts of TOSSI, who were fundamental in its inception and have been involved in all aspects of TOSSI’s activities since. The Thompson Track is a small acknowledgement of their efforts and of their ability to inspire action in others. Together with Paul Williams and Les Cave, Rhys was a driving force behind the TOSSI-led restoration of the Mangatawhiri wetlands.

TOSSI provided funding for this project with an additional grant from the Chisholm Family Charitable Trust.

Paul Hicks teacher

One of his last acts as Orewa College associate principal became a life threatening ordeal for retiring Warkworth teacher Paul Hicks, who contracted a serious illness after a recent South American student recruitment drive. His subsequent hospitalisation kept him away from the only end-of-year senior prize giving he’s ever missed in 31-years. Well-known for his ready smile, he hasn’t let the incident take the shine off his career at the school. Appropriately, for a mathematician and keen traveller, he’s calculated that his commute over the years adds up to going about 10 times around the world. But, he told Adele Thackray he considers it well worth it, to have been able to live and work in places he loves.

We’d been back from South America for a couple of days when I became so ill I couldn’t eat or drink. I had an E coli infection that caused my kidneys and liver to start shutting down. After five days in hospital, an intensive antibiotic treatment and 12 litres of intravenous drip, I was well enough to go home, but the hospital registrar admitted she had been worried about me when I came in. It was the first time I’d ever been ill as a result of travelling to South America, since I eagerly volunteered for the job 12 years ago. I’ve had an amazing time meeting the people there.

The agents I deal with greet me like a long lost brother and Orewa has hosted hundreds of South American students over the years, mostly from Brazil, but increasingly from Argentina and Chile.

They fit in well with the school and its other international students, who not only contribute to the school’s finances, but also add character and culture, expanding our students’ horizons and providing them with friends around the world. This year we had our first student from Colombia and I’m hoping next year we’ll also see students from Peru and Ecuador, where my trips have helped make them aware of NZ as a possible high school destination.

I didn’t like school much myself. I was brought up in London and went to a fairly student-unfriendly Englishstyle grammar, but I did okay and got a job at London University’s zoology department. However, at 18 I decided London didn’t have much to offer me and I left home by myself to live in Australia. We were told it was ‘the land of milk and honey’ – what we weren’t told was that it had conscription for the Vietnam War. After a great year-and-ahalf working in Sydney, the birth date of two of my friends was announced as the part of the next intake for compulsory National Service, so we all moved to New Zealand. I soon realised this was the place to live and landed a permanent science research job with renowned zoologist Professor John Morton, who coincidentally had links with the college I’d worked at in London. That was how I met my wife Bev, then a trainee teacher who was the zoology

department librarian’s flatmate. She inspired me to train as a teacher and in 1977, when we returned from our OE, I went to teachers’ college, concurrently completing a maths degree.

While I was studying, we built a house on land we owned at Warkworth, a place I’ve always loved for its friendly, village atmosphere and proximity to the beaches. Soon after graduating, I was relief teaching at Wellsford when I called in at Orewa College on my day off to ask about relieving work opportunities.

The next day I started teaching maths and science at the college full-time and apart from a year-long teaching exchange to Sussex, England in 1993, I’ve been there ever since. My career there has almost mirrored that of current principal, Kate Shevland, who joined the school around the same time.

Both of us were maths teachers, heads of department and assistant principals, before Kate ended up principal and I became associate principal. It’s been a great working relationship.

During that time, the roll has grown from about 600 to 1900, partly due to assimilating Orewa Primary’s year seven and eight pupils in 2005, which led to a huge timetabling challenge that appealed to my mathematical brain.

An extensive building programme has matched the roll growth and, over time, there has been a big shift in students’ attitudes. When I started, Orewa was a small, beachside school, there were plenty of jobs and students weren’t motivated about qualifications, often leaving during their senior years. Now everybody realises that qualifications are absolutely essential and many go on to tertiary institutions. My own children got a great education at Warkworth Primary and Mahurangi College that set them up for life. Daniel now works for a Warkworth company and Emma is a speech therapist in London.

I’ve also been in charge of discipline at Orewa. There’s no doubt that kids have got tougher, but perhaps more difficult to deal with are parents who believe everything their children say and blame the school for their problems.

Our view is that teachers are there to

teach and we have strict systems in place to support them. The switch from School Certificate and University Entrance to NCEA was a major change for both teachers and students. Orewa’s philosophy was to embrace the new national exams, although the education minister doesn’t always support them as well as she should. The idea is good; it gives students more choice and teachers a broader range of ways to assess practical subjects such as motorbody, cooking and art, but the amount of paperwork involved can be crippling. Previously students sat an exam at the end of the year and passed or failed. Now some subjects are all internally assessed and others are partially teacher assessed, while some remain totally external.

Constantly assessing, being audited by ministry and other administration tasks, amounts to a lot more work for teachers.

The college’s choice to make iPads compulsory in year nine will also change the face of teaching. Although I’m a dinosaur when it comes to technology, I think its introduction is inevitable and that it will be very effective. We did a huge amount of international research before deciding this was the way to go and staff members have been training most of the year in preparation. Sure there’ll be problems with implementation, just as there were with NCEA, but you can either grizzle or do something about it and our staff are the sort of

people that will make it work. For every detractor there’s a lot more who think it’s great that we’re moving with the times. Many out-of-zone students want to come here because of it. Other key roles I’ve enjoyed at the school include overseeing the arts, organising staff trout fishing expeditions and organising student trips on the Spirit of Adventure. Students invariably report this as the ‘experience of a lifetime’.

Outside of school my interests include giving new life to old stuff. In 1998 Bev and I bought the old Warkworth scout den, which used to be part of the original Warkworth School. It seemed appropriate for it to be acquired by two teachers. Restoring it was hard labour over many years, but it turned out beautifully. When we finished renovating it about 10 years ago, the Mahurangi Group artists put on an exhibition in it. Half the people came to see the art and the other half to see the building. We heard some lovely stories about people’s memories of going to school there. It’s a reminder of the lasting impact that school years make. I certainly have great memories of Orewa College that will last a life time. Although I will be sad to leave the college because of all the wonderful people I work with, I’m ready for a new chapter spending more time doing things that I love, including fly fishing and restoring old cars. Parts of a Bugatti are already on their way.

When Wellington first suggested the creation of a super city for Auckland, many questioned the wisdom of such a move, me included. When the detail of the proposal became apparent, we were even more concerned. But after much consideration, I decided it was better to be on the inner rather than the outer.

Year one of the new Auckland has largely been a success. Even our worst critics would admit that. And some of the areas at risk of being swallowed up have actually done best out of the new arrangement.

In the north, much of that is down to the performance of your councillors and local boards. Penny Webster, Michael Goudie and Wayne Walker have done a fantastic job balancing the needs of the north with the needs of the new Auckland. I have been equally impressed with the performance of the Hibiscus and Bays and Rodney Local Boards. Since the government-imposed amalgamation, residents in the north are already feeling some financial relief from the super city. Mains-connected water tariffs dropped by as much as 63.7 percent back in July while wastewater charges fell by as much as 35.1 percent. Rates this year increased at just 3.94 percent, compared with the nine percent suggested by the government’s transition agency, partly due to our pledge to save more than $80 million this year alone.

Next year we face the move to a single rating system based on capital value while tackling the inescapable reality of revaluations at the same time. As a result, there will be some movement up or down. For the majority of people living in the former Rodney District, rates and water charges will fall this year. Residential ratepayers with a median valued property with median water usage will be 11.48 percent better off.

Business ratepayers in the same position will be 4.15 percent better off.

However, there are many issues in the North that remain unresolved, and I am sure some people have reservations about a Mayor from the south. But let it be known that I enjoy every minute I spend in your part of the new Auckland.

I admire your spirit and the fact that, like me, you are working hard to make Auckland the best it can possibly be. In case I don’t see you this side of the holiday break, I wish you a fantastic festive season.

Tsunami plan raises public awareness A Civil Defence Tsunami Action Plan will be circulated to residents of Omaha Beach this month. An Omaha Forum last month was told that the change in population numbers, between summer and winter, presented some unique challenges. While land above the 10-metre contour may be considered relatively safe, most properties at Omaha are built below the 10-metre contour line.

Extended road works on Takatu Road leading to Tawharanui Regional Park will mean significant safety improvements before the onslaught of Christmas holiday traffic.

After seeing the planned works underway on the worst stretch of road, Waikauri Bay resident and road safety campaigner Robert Judd was planning to lobby for extending them, when the decision was announced. He said the speed of progress on existing works and an offer of free tipping on a neighbouring site, made it a logical choice.

“It is fair to say we are ecstatic to have the possibility of a lengthy portion of our one lane road, which was absolutely scary to use previously,

becoming a two lane road.”

He says Council has a responsibility to provide safe access for the more than 1000 cars per day visiting Tawharanui Regional Park and it deserves credit for seeing the economic benefits of continuing the work now.

Contractor Paul Boocock agrees that the urgent decision to extend the works and take advantage of cost efficiencies, including free access to a fully consented local tip site, was “a credit to Council staff ” that would ultimately benefit ratepayers.

“It’s a practical, cost-effective and safe solution,” he says.

Weather permitting, works should be completed within the next couple of weeks.

Travelling 1880s style For each generation, remarkable changes take place, making travel faster and easier. We must all have remarked at some time on the travel time between home and Auckland, compared to years ago. The following excerpt, from the diary of William Garden Cowie, Bishop of Auckland, takes us back to the 1880s to a different age and the challenging journeys taken by him and his indomitable wife Eliza, to meet with his far-flung parishioners.

28 January, 1887 – “We left Devonport about 8am by the coach with four horses, and about 12 o’clock reached the Orewa river, whither our horses had been sent on the day before.

We rested an hour and had dinner at the home of Mr de Grut. Our route from Devonport was over a succession of bleak hills overlooking the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, by an unmetalled road, in some places scarcely more than a roughly marked track, very muddy and slippery in the wet season.

From Orewa we rode about 20 miles to Warkworth. The road was very hilly, and the heat great, so we did not travel fast. Most of our route was through beautiful forest, called bush in New Zealand, and every now and then we got peeps of the sea and islands. We reached Warkworth after 6 pm and put up at Mr. Such’s hotel which is a clean, quiet and well-kept house. The people of the township were away with their

children, spending the day on Kawau Island, the home of Sir George Grey.

Next day about 3pm we left Warkworth on our horses for Tauhoa escorted by Mr F. Mc Murdo, the doctor’s son. For the first ten miles our route passed through thinly populated country, hilly and abounding in forest and fern. Here and there small patches were cultivated, the people being industrious but poor.

At Kaipara Flats we rested for 20 minutes at the home of Mr Hood.

Mrs Hood gave us some refreshing home-made cider and some excellent plums and apples. On continuing our

journey we crossed the Hoteo River and then rode for about four miles through grand forest, the track having here and there lying across it huge trees, still burning. The newly formed track was scarcely safe for a lady on a nervous horse. It was nearly dark when we reached the house of Captain Hearne, the district’s school master.

30 January, 1887 – A walk of about a mile down a rough track brought us to the little Church of the Holy Trinity where a congregation of about seventy awaited. The service was very cheering but for my part fatiguing. At three we set off for Wellsford some ten miles distant.”

A photograph of the Auckland Harbour Bridge under construction takes pride of place on the cover of a new book released this month, showcasing the history of the city and Northland. Historic Auckland & Northland, by Richard Wolfe, features more than 140 photographs, some never before published.

Some local scenes from Puhoi, Waiwera, Wellsford and Whangaripo Valley are included, and there is also a picture of the 3000 tonne Rewa, a large four-masted steel barque, which lies at Moturekareka Island.

Beginning with some of the earliest photographs of Auckland, including an 1859 image of a Maori group overlooking Commercial Bay and Queen Street, the story of the region takes in familiar places and forgotten buildings, recreation and transport, farming and industry through to the 1980s. Extended captions tell microstories of important events and people, and significant social changes.

During World War II, the Warkworth district faced its own invasion – not from enemy forces, but from the thousands of US servicemen who were stationed in camps in the area.

According to official records, camps were located at Riverina HQ, Wilson Rd (3 camps), Rodney Showgrounds, Goatley Road (4 camps), The Knoll, Old Great North Road, Camp (L. Beresford’s land), Woodcock Road (3), Carran Road, Wylie Road, Falls Road, Perry Road, Matakana (2), Dome Camp (Kaipara Flats), Whangateau, Artillery Range, Tapora, and Pakiri Beach.

Next May, the Warkworth and District Museum will mark the 70th anniversary of this peaceful invasion with a special exhibition.

Head of displays, Jean Gardner, is hoping to uncover new mementos held in local family hands to include, This is believed to be a US marine camp, in Hill Street Warkworth, around 1943. on loan, in the exhibition, which will run for about six months. She says nearly everyone she speaks to knows someone who remembers “the Yanks”.

Although the men were being trained for battle in the Pacific, there was time for ‘rest and recreation’ which included local dances and entertainment, and many local families made lasting friendships with these men during this time.

It is these stories that the museum is hoping to record for posterity.

Work was completed at the end of October and residents were informed of the reasons for not removing any further slip material. Auckland Transport said that the remaining over slips/slumped batter weren’t causing further issues, and weren’t affecting road stability or safety.

Warkworth Businesses Association secretary Verena Steele says that by coordinating the event on a single night this year, customers will have greater certainty and choice and retailers should experience increased foot traffic.

Kiwi Christmas celebration Two singers from Tauranga will be the guest performers at the Mahurangi Vineyard Church’s free Christmas at the Beach at Snells Beach on December 18.

Organisers are encouraging families to pack a picnic and join them for live entertainment starting at 6pm.

Children’s games which include tug of war, sack races and a lolly scramble start at 4pm.

Organiser Melinda Stevenson says some great entertainment has been lined-up including talented brother and sister duo Leilani Taula, 15, and Elijah, 13, from Tauranga.

“They have performed at Christmas at the Bay in Tauranga, as well as various other events and delighted their audiences,” she says.

“They are travelling a long way to perform, so it would be great for the entire community to come down and support them. Children from the Mahurangi Vineyard church choir will perform, as well as a number of other local singers.”

The concert will be held at the Snells Beach waterfront reserve, at the bottom of Snells Beach Road. In the event of rain, it will be held at the Snells Beach Community Centre on Hamatana Road.

Sounds a bit like Christmas Lucy Moore Park will come alive with flickering candles and the sound of Christmas carols on December 9, for the annual Warkworth Carols by Candlelight event.

Guest singers Louisa Collier, of Rodney Live fame, and Speaker of the House Lockwood Smith are both on the programme, which starts at 7.30pm.

Around 100 children from Warkworth Primary, Snells Beach School and Mahurangi Christian School will perform in a massed children’s choir.

Accompanying the singing will be the

Warkworth Brass Band, under the baton of Alan Flack.

Concert conductor Linda Gribble says she enjoys seeing the community spirit on the night.

“We had thousands of people turn out for last year’s event,” she says. “Bring blankets, cushions, chairs, pack a picnic for the family to nibble on and most importantly, bring your voices to sing-along.”

The Warkworth Rotary Club sponsors the concert each year. They will be giving out glow sticks and song sheets on the night.

Foodlink seeks donations Donations of non-perishable items will help brighten Christmas for many needy families in the Mahurangi area next month.

During the past 12 months, Warkworth Christian Foodlink has distributed 282 food parcels, providing assistance to nearly 1000 adults and children.

There is always additional demand at Christmas and acting Foodlink manager Roger MacKay says he would welcome donations, large and small, from the wider community.

Items can be left at the Mahurangi Matters office, corner Neville and Alnwick Streets, during normal business hours, or at the Presbyterian Church, 5 Pulham Road, Warkworth.

Financial donations are also welcome.

Mahurangi Vineyard Church will add a festive twist to its Out of the Box food parcels this month, delivering traditional Christmas fare and holiday treats to those who would otherwise miss out.

Coordinator Christine Coote says the charitable service has already put together 49 parcels this year, helping numerous families and individuals through times of need.

Contributions from the community through an Out of the Box food collection table established outside Warkworth New World in September have helped the group recently double its output to two parcels a week, she says.

Christine says the generosity of the community has been impressive and includes regular food donations from New World, and fruit and vegetables from The Country Store.

The group now aims to produce 50 Christmas hampers that will “bless and de-stress” struggling families.

Puhoi Cheese and Brookview Tea House have also got on board with hamper contributions.

Boxes have been hand-painted and decorated by church children and thanks to the group’s previous fundraising efforts, including the sale of a huge batch of donated honey, they will be packed with hams, Christmas cake, special drinks and more.

Christine says they’d like to top up the hampers with more special treats and while all types of contributions are gratefully received, items such as lollies and chocolates, would be especially welcome at this time of year.

Food donations can be dropped into the Out of the Box food collection table outside New World any time until December 16.

All aboard for Santa parade The Warkworth Pipe Band will lead the Warkworth Christmas Parade, which will be held on December 3, starting at 1pm.

More than 20 floats are expected to join the procession which will make its way down Neville Street, along Queen Street and into Mill Lane.

The Warkworth Businesses Association is organising the event.

Member Liz McClean says there will be two prizes of $250 to be won for the best floats, as judged by a panel of judges and the crowd.

“There’ll be lots to do after the parade this year,” Liz says. “As well as the prizegiving ceremony, there will be free face painting and opportunities for

photos with Santa in his grotto built by Mitre 10, next to a 2.4 metre Christmas tree, donated by the Warehouse.

“We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Rodney Local Board for helping with costs – this has been a huge help and has meant we’ve been able to put together a new-look parade this year.”

A few days in Snells Beach inspired an original composition by a prominent German composer, which is now regularly performed in Europe.

Dieter Mack, Professor of Music at the University of Lubeck, Gemany and a composer of contemporary classical music, was a guest at the Snells Beach holiday home of Michael and Mary Farrell in 2009. The Farrells met Professor Mack through their daughter Elizabeth, who plays the flute and piccolo in the Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra and was a member of “Ensemble Selisih” that he organised to tour here that year.

Inspired by the view from their house and the general ambience of the area,

he composed “Snells Beach for Metal Percussion Solo” for percussionist Max Riefer.

The 10-minute piece, using both conventional and exotic Far Eastern percussion instruments, premiered in Germany at the end of 2009 and has since become part of the repertoire of modern percussionists internationally.

In the foreword to the music Professor Dieter Mack writes: “The title refers to the place where the compositional process started and where the music was completely conceived in its basic form. Snell’s Beach is a nice village at the sea, one hour north from Auckland/New Zealand, where I had a great time in March 2009.”

Foodbank call for Christmas donations Ambulance tree sale The Loaves and Fishes Foodbank, which covers, Wellsford, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and Tapora, is encouraging residents to donate toys and food to its annual Christmas appeal.

A Foodbank spokesperson says the voluntary service has had a busy year responding to an increasing number of requests for Foodbank boxes. Members of various church congregations have supplied most of the food throughout the year.

“There’s always an increase in requests at this time of year so we’re hoping the wider community will feel encouraged to donate non-perishable food items suitable for Christmas dinner and toys,” she says. “If the toys are second-hand, we just ask that they be clean and in good condition.”

Donations can be left at the Coast to Coast Medical Centre, Wellsford Hospice Shop or the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Last year, 47 boxes were given to families in the district.

“If you’re having a Christmas Party over the next few weeks, then perhaps instead of giving presents to one another, you might like to organise

to donate something to the Foodbank instead.”

Donations will be accepted up until December 21.

Wellsford carols cancelled The lack of an organiser has lead to the cancellation of the annual Wellsford Carols by Candlelight.

The event has been organised by Julie Knott, of Wellsford Promotions, for the last four years. Julie says unfortunately, she could not continue and no-one else was available to take it on. However, she says the carols will be back next year. Meanwhile, there will be no Santa Parade in Mangawhai for the second year in a row. Mangawhai Business Development Association (MBDA) chair Mike McGarry says if no-one in the community organises one next year, the MBDA would consider running the parade. The last Mangawhai Santa Parade was held in 2009.

Warkworth and Wellsford St John Ambulance stations will be selling freshly cut Christmas trees this month in the lead up to Christmas Day. Wellsford St John volunteer Peter Corry says around $3000 was raised last year for the cadet group. He hopes to raise the same, if not more, this year.

“We will be selling them for $30 from the station from 8.30am to 5pm during the week, and from 10am to 4pm on the weekends,” he says.

“The trees are in great condition when we get them.

Get in quick as the best ones go first.”

The Warkworth station will be selling trees from December 3 up to December 24, from 9am to 6pm.

Standard sized trees are $30.

Wellsford embraces show day An estimated about 2000 people turned up to enjoy a relaxed day of entertainment, activities and events at the Wellsford Show on November 19.

Co-organiser Jo Wood says the entertainment stage, which featured Tempist Fugit, “rocked”.

“Everything went really well,” she says.

“Rotating performers every half hour, was hugely popular. The craft and market stalls were constantly buzzing with people, as well as the indoor exhibitions in the A&P building.”

Matakana ready to turn on its Christmas light show The festive spirit will hit Matakana with a bang on December 9, when the village holds its annual concert and ‘Christmas lights’ ceremony.

The entertainment will include the Matakana School choir and kapa haka group, 10 Ukuladies and the Matakantata Choir.

Santa will arrive in style on a Matakana Fire truck and Santa’s elves will also be in attendance.

Village marketing manager Berris Spicer says the Matakana Playcentre’s Christmas Market has also been invited

to add to the festive atmosphere, and there will be lots of Christmas themed raffles and stalls.

“Many of the shops will be open and we’re hoping for a good community turnout.”

New Christmas lights have been purchased with funds raised during Rugby World Cup screenings at the cinemas and these will light up around 9pm.

The event will be held on a specially constructed stage in the market square, from 7pm to 9pm.

Builder beats the best

Warkworth building company Steve Haycock Construction has won the national Placemakers Registered Master Builders House of the Year Award, in the $600,000 to $1 million category. Steve’s win was announced at a ceremony in Auckland on November 19, where he was up against 28 other regional Gold Reserve Award winners from throughout NZ. “It’s been in the back of my mind for a long time, but to actually win is unbelievable,” Steve says. “The house had some really challenging features and was not an easy build, so we’re thrilled the judges recognised this. Full credit to foreman Mike Ingham, the build team and sub-contractors.” The winning house was designed by Ponting Fitzgerald Architects and integrated textured tilt-slab panels with narrow shiplap cedar.

Beaurepaires Warkworth Brendan Woolley, a mechanic with 30 years experience, is the new owner of Beaurepaires Warkworth.

Brendan moved to Matakana 20 years ago when he purchased the automotive side of Matakana Motors, changing its name to Matakana Auto Services. He spent the next 15 years building it into a reputable and thriving business.

Rural and urban divide

This month I attended hearings, including the new forum format hearings, for the Auckland Spatial Plan. It was great to see many local people in attendance and I think the forum was a productive and proactive way to discuss a wide range of issues and topic areas of interest to, and affecting, rural communities.

During the summing up it was clear that there were a relatively small number of common themes arising from the forum discussions, with an overriding message being that rural communities are different to urban communities.

Discussions around a compact city were inevitably linked with discussion related to transportation and rail links. If some of the rail-link proposals occur within the inner city, rural ratepayers will likely be contributing to the development and operation of this infrastructure either through rates or tolls, along with the many infrastructure upgrades necessary to enable growth and development of rural communities. The establishment of funding priorities within both the rural and urban communities will be a juggling act for Council and will be an area where rural communities will need to ‘stand up and be counted’ to ensure that there is an equitable focus and distribution of funding.

It was interesting to note that many of our rural communities are not listed in Schedule 2 – of Chapter 7 of the Plan - Rural Settlements Classification.

While it may not be possible to list every community, there needs to be an acknowledgment that there are a number of other rural settlements not listed, with the criteria for listing or not listing stated. Communities such as Tapora, Tomarata and Pakiri are not listed and Kaipara Flats is indicated as a village with “proposals for growth and development in various stages of planning and implementation, subject to infrastructure provision and other constraints”.

On a positive note, it was refreshing to hear favourable discussion on a range of environmental initiatives such as promoting mandatory rain water tanks throughout the region, developing our own local vernacular rather than adopting that of other countries, careful planning for pedestrian, cycle and vehicle networks with high levels of connectivity in both rural and urban areas.

Other issues related to the need to restrict growth in rural areas, the need for marine-based planning and the need for a fully integrated planning approach; which was an issue that I personally submitted on with respect to the integrated management of land areas and harbours such as Kaipara and Whangateau.

The Spatial Plan sets some high and inspiring targets to achieve that will benefit both rural and urban communities. However, the ‘devil will be in the detail’, as to how initiatives are planned and how they will be funded.

A crying shame

This topic was prompted by the recent tragic loss of what everyone else thought was a perfectly normal life. Except that this particular 20-year-old chose to die.

The exact reasons for his actions are conjectural amongst those closest to him.

There was no previous history to suggest any underlying troubles or suicidal inclinations. It remains a tragic mystery.

Youth suicide in New Zealand is a major issue. The 20 to 29 year old group is more vulnerable than the teenage group. Our rates compare with the worst statistics worldwide. An internet search will find numerous articles on this issue, the underlying causes, the gender paradox (while more women consider suicide, fatalities are far worse among men), psycho-social concepts in individuals and cultures. Various strategies to prevent suicide are proposed; some with merit, some simplistic. None of these are my concern in this article. I am perplexed by the absence of a plea for help – a word, a gesture – something. This is not unique to this particular case.

What is it that prevents a youth from presenting their problem to someone and/or a healthcare professional? Is it because of the stigma attached to the term “mental health”? Is it a fear of it all being “in my head”? I am concerned that the medical and allied professions may have created a false dichotomy in the concept of health viz the physical versus the mental. Somehow the former seems legitimate – and the latter less so? Somehow it is OK to have a physical ailment – but not to be emotionally unwell? The question “Is it all in my head, doc?” prompts the response “Where else would it be?” How does one experience anything other than in one’s head? The one diagnosis is as deserving as the other and neither should prompt judgement.

Surely we need to do better at creating an environment where, from an early age, our youth are comfortable disclosing their feelings of desperation without fear of judgement or stigma. Perhaps dispelling the myth of “mental versus physical” is a good starting point – one organism from head to toe. I am not suggesting that if we were informed about the issues confronting someone in such a state of despair, that we would necessarily prevent suicide, but it would at least afford the opportunity to try. If you have, or if you know anyone who has concerns about emotional wellness – particularly in the 15 to 29 year age group, ask for help.

A large collection of kauri furniture amassed over 48 years of marriage, some dating back to the 1800s, will be sold at an antique sale on December 3.

Tony Moore and his wife Colleen have sold their 1867 Albertland home, on State Highway 1 just north of Te Hana, to move to Raglan to be closer to family.

The couple purchased the threehectare property in 1985 after falling in love with a picture of the two-storey house in the paper.

“It wasn’t quite what we were after at the time,” Tony says. “We were looking to invest in a property for our retirement. However, after viewing the house, it felt right.”

Corporate teams compete to the limit Matakana Country Park hosted the Military Arts Club and Advance Training Centre (ATC) Corporate Warfare Challenge last month.

Eight corporate teams of 10-members each and a team from the youth development unit, based in Hobsonville, entered the gruelling event.

The course included minefield and bridge crossings, swamp runs, electric fences, target shooting, obstacle courses and stretcher building. The object was to rescue a wounded helicopter pilot through enemy territory. The enemy was waiting to catch teams for internment in a prisoner-of-war camp where they endured torture through punishing drill exercises. The final winner in the challenge last month was a team from Russell McVeigh.

The event also showcased some of the activities of the hardman/woman event scheduled for mid-January.

The Military Arts Club is based at the Country Park, and owns the confidence course and conducts corporate team challenges.

ATC is a high quality private training establishment, which runs NZ’s only military prep school, north of the Waikato. They have 11 years of experience running programmes that prepare young people for entry into the defence forces and NZ Police. The focus is on raising the literacy and numeracy level of students and gaining their NCEA Level 1 and 2. A total of 86 percent of students gain employment or education at a higher level.

Christmas traditions and customs differ from country-to-country and in new world countries such as New Zealand, they also seem to differ from family-tofamily as we come to terms with making a religious winter festival into a summer one. We love to hear the different ideas our customers have but notice that most of our cooks like to try out at least one or two new ideas to go along with the tried and true family favourites.

It is now the peak of the baking season with goodies for both Christmas entertaining and edible presents being produced, and we are looking forward to more customers sharing their recipes and tips with us. We will be trying out some of our own on Thursday December 15, from 2pm to 6pm.

At home, we have a different main course each year and this year it is going to be turkey. A few years back, I experimented with the brining method and now always do it this way. That and using a meat thermometer will ensure perfectly cooked and moist meat from all parts of the bird. There are lots of recipes for brining but I have used this one and it is very simple. Don’t be alarmed at the amount of salt, most of it gets discarded and the turkey certainly isn’t over seasoned.

• 1 cup salt • 2 lemons, quartered • 1 large turkey

Turkey brine • 1 cup brown sugar • 6 sprigs thyme

• 2 oranges, quartered • 4 sprigs rosemary

To make the brining solution, dissolve the salt and sugar in 8 litres of cold water in a non-reactive container (such as a clean bucket or large stockpot).

Add the oranges, lemons, thyme, and rosemary. Note: if you have a big turkey and need more brine than this, use 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup brown sugar for every gallon of water.

Remove the neck, giblets, and liver from the cavity of the turkey and reserve for the gravy. Rinse the turkey inside and out under cold running water.

Soak the turkey in the brine, covered and refrigerated, for at least 4 hours and up to 24 hours.

Roast as you normally would. I prefer to fill cavity with more lemons and oranges, lots of fresh herbs to taste, garlic cloves and salt and pepper and then bake one or two types of traditional stuffing in tinfoil in the oven.

Mangawhai ramble success

More than $9000 was raised at the Mangawhai Garden Ramble held last month, the most successful ramble in its eight-year history. Money raised will be split between the Mangawhai Kindergarten and the Mangawhai/ Kaiwaka Plunket to help with ongoing running costs as well as purchasing new equipment. What do dinosaurs, Hawaiian hula, frogs and Christmas have to do with gymnastics? Everything! At Tiny Tumblers Preschool Gym, fun themes happen every Friday morning at the Scout Den in Shoesmith St, Warkworth, all with the purpose of moving towards new physical milestones. Community sport coach Tony Mordaunt recently visited Tiny Tumblers and was impressed with the session facilitation, variety and quality of equipment used to encourage children’s physical and mental growth through basic gymnastics movements in a fun and intentional way. Activities stimulate the children’s development in swinging, rolling, balancing, jumping and landing, locomotion and motor skills. The emphasis is on making the sessions fun and encouraging participation at each individual child’s developmental level. For more information contact Pauline Shaw on 425 7905.

Mahurangi Gymnastics Club members enjoyed a street running class recently.

This was hoots of fun and so successful the club plans to offer future classes to the wider community. Thanks to a small community grant from Auckland Council an inflatable tumbling mat has been purchased to use as a fundraiser and fun activity for junior members and as an important aid to coaching tumbling for their competitive members. An end-of-year display at Mahurangi College, on December 5 at 6pm, will include gymnastic demonstrations, including rhythmic and street-running displays, followed by prizegiving and a barbecue. Volunteer coaches and parents from Warkworth Athletics and Mahurangi Rugby Clubs have had the welcome benefit of Tony Mordaunt’s expertise this spring.

Tony attends club nights, assisting and advising volunteer coaches to increase their confidence, as well as enabling participants to improve their skills. All primary schools have been working on athletic skills covering such events as shot-put, discus, long jump, high jump and running skills. Warkworth Athletics Club has generously lent their equipment for use during the community sport sessions.

Kowhai Swim club nights are on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. After timed races of varying distances, everyone enjoys the fun relays at the end, and there is always plenty of cheering and friendly rivalry to end the evening. New swimmers and parent helpers are always welcome. The club is also looking for new coaches to take junior squads. Masters swimming meet at Mahurangi College pool on Thursday nights at 6pm. Sensible on many levels

There are many potential benefits that could accrue from connecting our communities with a system of walkway/cycleways, but it’s helpful to summarise some of the more obvious: Health – It is well-accepted in our modern lifestyle that exercise in moderation is beneficial for most of us. Experience shows that a pathway encourages many more to partake in exercise by easing the way to walking or cycling. They are used to teach pupils to ride and also for cycle rides as part of the fitness program.

Safety – By encouraging cyclists and pedestrians off the road, the accident potential must be reduced.

Traffic – Imagine if more schoolchildren could safely walk or cycle to school.

How many vehicle trips would be saved each day? How much morning and afternoon traffic congestion could be avoided? Snowball effect – The common experience of developing pathways is that the further they are extended, the greater the overall use. A new extension leverages the earlier investments as the pathway gets new users for ever more diverse purposes.

Connectivity – The communities of East Rodney have a unique additional benefit to be gained from the development of a pathway. Each village is approximately 10km from at least one other so a resident of any village is no more than a 10km cycle or walk from another village. A pathway linking all villages has the potential to bind the communities like few others, not only after completion but maybe, more importantly, during its development.

At this point one could ask if it’s so good why doesn’t Council build pathways as a matter of policy for the benefit of the residents, just as it builds roads where they are needed? It’s a good question and, of course, Council actually has contributed to various local pathways such as at Omaha, Snells Beach and a little at Mahurangi College. But more on that and how we can make it happen next issue.

Anniversary rekindles Kawau connections Sixty yachts symbolically celebrated the Kawau Island Yacht Club’s 60th anniversary on November 12 with a regatta that tested competitors with a range of conditions.

Some of New Zealand’s most celebrated sailors and the island’s more prominent families were represented at the regatta, which started in flat calm conditions and ended with a brisk northerly and occasional rain squalls.

Bedecked with flags, the restored century-old sailing scow Jane Gifford served as Committee Boat, sending six divisions on a scenic course that took them out of Bon Accord Harbour, round Moturekareka Island and back to Bon Accord. There were also inner

harbour dinghy races and rowing contests.

Among the glamour yachts participating were the historic Logan masterpiece, Rainbow owned by a syndicate of Brad Butterworth, David Glen, Hamish Ross and the Dimmock family, and the Lou Tercel racer Ranger owned by Ian Cook.

Sentimental favourite was the tiny sloop Heather, built by John Lidgard on the island and named for his wife. Two generations of Lidgards, John and his son Duthie, sailed Heather – restored to pristine condition – in the regatta.
