Collapse halts work on Coast highway site

Work ground to a halt at the end of last year on a site at 406-408 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Ōrewa where 17 homes were being built.

The Chinese builder, EZYBuilding Construction & Consulting and EZYBuilding Group Co. (both with sole director Michael Lee of Auckland), went into liquidation on December 23.

EZYBuilding Construction owes more than half a million to creditors, with a large chunk of that ($407,000) to Bunnings, while EZYBuilding Group owes more than $3.9m.

On the other side of the ledger, EZYBuilding Group is owed almost $2.3 million by the Ōrewa site’s owner/developer, Treasure Plus, and just over $845,500 by BA Developments. However, the liquidator notes that some of the sums owed to the company are disputed. Sole director of Treasure Plus is Shaohuan Liu of Auckland.

debt is owed to its Silverdale branch, as liquidation is proceeding.

Before the collapse, a number of issues had already been red-flagged at the site, according to Auckland Council.

A spokesperson says Council inspectors found construction at 406408 Hibiscus Coast Highway “to be consistently non-compliant from early stages of the project, resulting in multiple failed inspections”.

The ongoing issues resulted in Council scaling up its inspections until all noncompliant works and failed inspections were remedied.

“Council did not issue a ‘stop works’ or ‘dangerous building’ notice for the site, rather works stopped and the site was closed when building company ‘EZYBuild’ went into liquidation,” the spokesperson says.

Hibiscus Matters understands none of the homes were pre-sold off the plans, but potential buyers have been registering their interest.

The complex is still being marketed online for sale, with prices ranging

from $999,000-$1.2 million.

The Council spokesperson says that a project management company has recently been assigned to manage the site and the process of appointing a new contractor to carry out remedial work has begun.

Hibiscus Matters was unable to contact any of the company directors involved for comment.

Whangaparāoa first to get Coastal Management Plan Auckland Council has chosen Whangaparāoa Peninsula for its first Coastal Management Plan.

The plan sets out a sustainable approach to coastal management, looking at what short to long-term responses might be needed to tackle issues such as sea level rise and increasing flood and storm events over a total timeframe of 100 years.

It aims to: manage the impact of erosion and flooding; manage the impacts of rising sea levels; identify risks to safety, coastal defences and surrounding infrastructure; set a longterm plan to manage the coastline.

The Whangaparāoa pilot will inform around 14 other such plans to be rolled out around Auckland’s 3200km of coastline, and involves extensive public consultation.

A series of public presentations, workshops and open days begin this week and go right through until May 22 (see below).

Council’s coastal and geotechnical services manager, Paul Klinac, says at these meetings he expects to hear about issues at local beaches regarding structures such as stairs or cliff paths – and expects Ōrewa Beach to be raised, although it is out of the scope of the pilot.

“Although there has always been high public interest in Ōrewa Beach, it will have its own separate plan,” Mr Klinac says. “Coastal Management Plans are not about specific Council assets such as seawalls or stairs, it is about what people value about their coast,” he says. “Is that open space, playgrounds and reserves or walking on the beach?”

He says this information from locals will be overlaid with the most up to date climate change data, so that Council can prioritise what might need to be enhanced or protected and what the options are to do that.

“Previously the approach has been to react to issues that are already happening – along the lines of, ‘the coast is eroding, do we need a seawall?’

But this is a proactive way to prepare for what lies ahead.”

The document does not provide a rulebook – it is a guide – but Mr Klinac says it will carry substantial weight because it reflects current data and the community’s voice at that time.

pilot is funded by rates, however whether or not the remaining plans can be rolled out will depend on Council’s next Long Term Plan (10-

year budget). The estimate for all 15 plans is just over $3 million.

Mr Klinac says the completed plans will give Council an idea of what specific funding will be required in future – such as to build, or take down, coastal structures.

He says managing coastal areas is a challenge and “a bit scary” in the face of sea level rise and climate change, but that is why this discussion needs to take place with communities.

“We can’t protect all that coastline, so there will be hard decisions to be made in the medium to long-term. Both Council and private landowners have a role and responsibility. We shouldn’t shy away from that.”

by July.

I would like to applaud local board member Andy Dunn on his initiative to try to stop CAB volunteers getting parking tickets (HM February 3). He may not have approached it in the conventional way, and for sure the local board logo is an issue for them, but he gets my thanks for giving something a go. Keep cutting that red tape, Andy.

So orderly, so consistently modern.

I congratulate the planners, the architects, the developers and the council for producing so many kilometres, hills and valleys of uniform consistency. Why then do I feel the need to put in a plea for some degree of individuality – colour, style, a yellow door, a green roof or even red window frames? Is this now ‘out of bounds’ for Council consents? Is it regarded as ‘uneconomic’ or ‘messy’, or is it just plain too hard to regulate individuality? Does it cost too much to splash some colour in the suburban sprawl? In the worship of modernity do we need to produce conformity to such a degree that it surpresses vibrancy and individuality? Or am I the only person here who does not celebrate the black and white (and grey)?

Parks no easy fix Further to the article regarding Andy Dunn’s issuing of unofficial parking permits for CAB volunteers (HM February 3). Andy was obviously keen to do a good deed for CAB volunteers.

It does seem, however, that he has not considered an across the board status for all volunteers throughout Ōrewa.

The Hospice Shop, Age Concern, the library and multiple other community groups and businesses in Ōrewa are dependent on our fabulous community volunteers – all of them need to park their cars and all battle the ongoing parking issues in Ōrewa.

It seems unfortunate that a Local Board member took an ‘unorthodox’ process to find a solution for one group, and not for other volunteers. Ōrewa, like so many other fast growing urban town centres, has a highly evident lack of parking, which is by no means an easy fix (segue to the ‘Counting Cars in Ōrewa Reserve carpark’ article in same edition). All volunteers face the same daily parking dilemma, yet unofficial parking permits were not offered to them. We (Destination Ōrewa Beach) are happy to engage with Auckland Transport and Auckland Council on any future solutions to the parking issue, which works for shoppers, diners and all volunteers alike – just reinforcing that there is no magic fix for this issue.

Inconvenient PO Which shortsighted person decided to close our delightful Post Office in Ōrewa attached to KiwiBank (which was purpose designed and very adequate) and move it into a miserable corner of Paper Plus? There is inadequate space to pack items, only two small counters, a pathetic queuing area and staff who seem to struggle to cope with more than two people at a time. I am very annoyed about this as I do a lot of overseas posting to children and grandchildren and I consider that Ōrewa deserves much better for the size and age of its community. Silverdale has a better facility and I’ll go there in future even though it’s inconvenient for me to do so.

When Sam Imhof saw this on Little Manly Beach recently, looking like some strange creature from the deep ocean, he sought information from MPI. Hibiscus Matters also put out feelers, and both MPI and marine scientist Clinton Duffy of DOC advised that these are fish gills and gill arches.

Thought Hibiscus Matters’ readers may be interested in a shot of Hobbs Bay on Tiritiri Matangi Island on Auckland Anniversary Day. Stage set for great year

Welcome to Siren, a monthly round-up of key events and issues from local emergency services. In our first report, the issues that so often affect our coast and country in summer are predominant – heavy traffic, tinder-dry vegetation and an increased number of boats on the water.

Silverdale St John and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to a fatal headon collision on State Highway 1 north of Puhoi at Windy Ridge, on Wednesday, February 3. One driver died and ambulance officers treated a second patient before that person was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

St John Rodney Territory Manager Megan Fairley said the accident was a reminder for all motorists to take care. “Our staff continue to see motorists following too closely and using cell phones while driving,” she said.

• Among the calls for Silverdale Fire Brigade was a vegetation fire in native bush alongside Ōrewa Estuary (pictured) on February 3. The fire could quickly have got out of control, but was spotted by staff at Centrestage Theatre, who alerted the brigade.

Meanwhile, Manly Volunteer Fire Brigade were grateful to ASAP Water’s Gavin Rhind, who let them use a tank of his water to tackle a vegetation fire on Wade River Road, where there was no reticulated water, on February 6.

• Hibiscus Coastguard has been extremely busy, mainly with mechanical breakdowns, according to crew chief Dave Tilley. “With a good number of these breakdowns, the problems started on their way out at the beginning of the day, but decisions have been made to continue on their day out, resulting in a callout for Coastguard, when a safer choice could have been to turn back when the problems started,” he said. Inadequate forms of communication have also caused problems, with a recent callout to a small boat in trouble that only had a mobile phone with a flat battery on board. “With the vessel drifting quickly, it took time to locate them, as there was no way to communicate to track their location,” Dave said. He said it is vital for all boaties to have several forms of communication, especially a VHF radio.

Times have been grim for Centrestage Theatre – Covid-19 lockdowns nearly closed its doors for good.

The fact that it is not only up and running now, but busier than ever, is a success story that is largely thanks to the community.

The theatre, in Ōrewa, is a registered charity, dependent on income from ticket sales, venue and costume hire, sponsorship and grants. It bears the considerable cost of running and maintaining its recently refurbished building (owned by Ōrewa Theatre Trust) – including an annual bill of $33,000 for insurance.

Co-manager Stephanie McKellar says before the first lockdown, the theatre was poised for its best year in ages.

“Just like that, the first six months of our programme was cancelled, and all income gone,” Stephanie remembers.

“I had to refund ticket sales of around $21,000, including for a sold-out season of Strictly Ballroom.”

As she contacted ticket holders about the refund, Stephanie says she was overwhelmed with the response – just over $7000 was donated back to the theatre.

“In a time of such uncertainty, that was incredible,” she says.

Support continued to flow – from Ōrewa Theatre Trust, theatre patrons, the Government wage subsidy and, after an anxious wait, an Auckland Council grant.

Centrestage Theatre’s Stephanie McKellar says a full board of scheduled shows and activities is a positive sign for the year ahead.

Stephanie says a lot was learned along the way, such as how to manage audiences restricted to 100 socially distanced people and how to trim an already slim budget to the bone.

She says commercial sponsorship, including naming rights, would help ensure the facility’s future. Also she is hopeful as the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board lobbies Council for better funding that would bring it in line with other community theatres in the city.

“The whole Covid experience proved how the community values its theatre.

You never know what’s around the corner but I’m optimistic, and so grateful,” Stephanie says.

I hope everyone has had a good break over the holiday period.

Our experience over the summer months is in marked contrast with what has been happening elsewhere in the world. In this respect, one of the more positive byproducts of the last 12 months has been that people have got to see more of their local area, as well as of the country as a whole. This certainly makes you appreciate what we have in NZ and on the Hibiscus Coast in particular. So does the increased international awareness brought about by the pandemic – a useful yardstick when it comes to striking a balanced view of things.

One international example that stood out for me was the recent cricket test series between India and Australia. Against all odds, the Indians beat the Australians in Australia.

What made this all the more remarkable was that in the first test, India was thrashed. In fact, they were bowled out for a humiliating 36 in their second innings, their lowest score ever in test cricket. At that point they also lost their inspirational captain and best player, who had to return home for the birth of his first child.

At that stage most cricketing pundits were expecting the Indian team to fall apart, especially given they were up against the cock-a-hoop Aussies who have the most potent fast bowling attack in the world. This view was only reinforced when India lost a further five of their top line players to injury.

Instead of falling apart, however, the Indian team stepped up to the mark – big time. Their young, inexperienced replacements showed no fear and were not overawed by their far more illustrious opponents. Their few remaining senior players took on more responsibility and contributed some outstanding individual performances.

As the series progressed, India went on to win one improbable victory after another. What became apparent to anyone watching was the quiet confidence and determination of the underdogs, perhaps best exemplified by their new captain, Ajinkya Rahane, a humble and unassuming-looking man.

For me, it was one of those inspirational sporting events that comes along every so often. This sort of inspiration, however, is not just confined to international sporting teams – I see it around the Coast in local clubs, organisations and workplaces, where people help to lift others up, instill self-belief and achieve some incredible results, often against the odds. In 2021, let’s hope we continue to see more examples of this – locally, nationally and internationally.

Dangerous walk for highway residents A lack of footpaths or cycleways along sections of Hibiscus Coast Highway has been brought to the attention of Auckland Transport (AT) for years, but so far nothing has been done.

The issue is of particular concern to residents of 24 houses on the highway, in Silverdale, who have a risky journey on foot to their local shops, which, depending where they are going, may include walking on the highway itself or dashing across it.

The route takes residents along the highway from Titan Place to the Whangaparāoa Road intersection, or in the other direction towards Silverdale Street.

Seventy-three-year-old Lorraine Sampson, who has impaired vision, prefers to walk for her health, especially to nearby places such as the medical centre or shops – a journey she makes around four times a week.

For most of the route between her house and the pedestrian crossing at the Whangaparāoa Road/Hibiscus Coast Highway intersection, there is no footpath on either side.

“People walk on the road, the grass berm or on my driveway,” she says.

There is a short section of path, a few steep unstable steps made by frustrated residents, and another section put in by Council because the land was subsiding.

Road. She is used to being tooted there as cars rush past at 70kph.

Lorraine has been asking for a footpath from AT, Auckland Council, councillors and the local board for years. There have been various ideas and AT representatives have taken a look, but nothing has happened.

She also points out that the bus stop on the highway near Titan Place is unsafe – with no footpath, passengers step out virtually straight onto the highway.

“I’ve lived here for 50 years and have seen the highway get busier and busier with no improvements in pedestrian infrastructure,” she says. She says the underpass linking the village with the industrial side of Silverdale is unsafe for lone walkers.

Recent moves by AT to build a footpath

on the Millwater side (between Silverdale Street and Millwater Parkway) were halted due to “technical difficulties caused by topographical and geotechnical constraints”, which put the project over budget.

Lorraine says pedestrian triggered lights are needed there, or at Silverdale Street. She has been told that lights and a crossing at Silverdale Street are not envisaged until Penlink is built – this is expected to lower traffic volumes on the highway, so that the speed limit can be reduced and a crossing put in.

AT spokesperson Josh McConnell says AT recognises there is a gap in the footpath provision.

“Due to limited funding for footpaths and the high level of requests, we prioritise based on land use (connection to schools, public transport, town centres, etc), safety, connectivity and constructability,” he says. “Unfortunately this footpath request is not currently on our list for construction in the near future.”

“We pay rates like everyone else and all I’m asking for is to be able to safely walk from my house to my local shops,” Lorraine says.

Cool $800,000 for highway reseal

Motorists might have noticed that a large chunk of Hibiscus Coast Highway, from East Coast Road up Silverdale Hill, was recently resealed. Auckland Transport (AT) advises that the estimated cost for all the work is just over $800,000. The resealing is part of an annual programme designed to ensure a good standard of performance for the very heavy use that this road receives.

It includes repair of any pavement failures. AT says while residential roads are largely chip-sealed (often to the frustration of residents who might previously have had a smooth seal), major corridors need to be maintained with the higher quality seal and therein lies the cost.

Sky Tower jump ‘no biggie’ for 90-year-old Vince Harris’s relatively quiet life in the Peninsula Club in Whangaparāoa is fitting for a 90-year-old, but every now and then he likes to get the adrenalin pumping.

His most recent daredevil activity was the 192m SkyJump off Auckland’s Sky Tower, which he completed on his 90th birthday last week.

Although he bungee jumped off the Harbour Bridge a couple of years ago, he is especially pleased about his latest jump because he did it as a fundraiser for Starship Hospital.

The ex-Royal Marine’s connection with Starship began in 1990, when he worked in purchasing for the Auckland District Health Board. In this role, he bought much of the equipment and supplies that were used when the children’s hospital opened.

It has remained close to his heart, and instead of birthday presents this year he is asking people to donate to Starship by sponsoring his jump.

He is also supporting the Royal Marines Charity.

Vince enjoyed the jump, but says he’s reached much greater speeds when skydiving.

The Royal NZ Navy band showed up at Sky Tower to surprise Vince, who is a former band member and director – and played Happy Birthday when he landed.

One of the great trees on the Coast is this Puriri alongside the track and adjacent to the Hihi feeding station in Waterfall Gully, Shakespear Regional Park. Its spectacular root system clings to the stream bank and over time it has grown together with an even older tree behind it – perhaps an offshoot. Main entrance to Milldale ready to open The 4000-home Milldale development reaches a major milestone this month with its main entrance from Pine Valley Road, over a new bridge crossing the Weiti Stream, due to be finished and open in the next few weeks.

A new exit slipway off State Highway 1 north at Silverdale is also under construction and is due to be finished by the end of the year.

Up to now, the only access to Milldale has been at its northern end via Sidwell Road, just off Wainui Road and the Millwater highway exit.

Milldale marketing consultant Warren Frogley says the new southern entrance will be open as soon as Auckland

Transport signs it off, hopefully by the end of March at the absolute latest. He says the new access, combined with the new motorway exit lane and other road improvements, should make life a lot easier not just for Milldale residents, but for many other drivers as well.

In addition, construction of an upgraded Wainui Road and Argent Lane intersection is happening this year and a new bridge across the motorway between Millwater and the Highgate business park is due to be built in 2022.

Key infrastructure is being paid for initially by Crown Infrastructure Partners (via ACC funding) and Auckland Council, but will be recovered via developer contributions

and by residents paying an annual infrastructure payment.

Meanwhile, despite the interruptions and challenges thrown up by Covid-19 last year, the growth of Milldale continues apace. Countless diggers, earthmovers and graders are clearing land as far as the eye can see, right back over the ridge to Argent Lane and almost out to Wainui Road, and dozens of homes are under construction, with many streets jammed with tradies’ trucks and vans.

The first residents moved in to Milldale in November 2019, and there are now around 300 homes being lived in and 720 lots have been sold, including 17 multi-house “super-lot” packages.

Warren says these will account for 87 extra homes, taking the total number to 941, and construction on six of the super-lots is already underway.

The first of two early childhood learning centres, MiniDale Explorers, opened last month opposite the development’s first park and playground in Archibald Drive. A second such centre is planned, as well as a 370-student primary school, with another primary school, a college and shops coming further down the track.

Warren says express bus services and park and ride facilities are also planned to expand as far as the Milldale and Millwater motorway exit, with additional bus routes also planned.

Plantings aim to stem tide of tree felling

An ambitious plan to increase the number of trees on local publicly owned land has begun.

At its final meeting last year, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board adopted the Council’s Urban Ngahere Action Plan, which aims to increase tree cover on public land by two percent in 10 years. It may not sound much, but it will require planting and nurturing at least 120 new trees in local parks, sportsfields, playgrounds and on roadsides annually.

It is hoped that this will mitigate the rapid tree loss seen in this area to date – the biggest in Auckland.

Hibiscus and Bays (Hibiscus Coast and upper North Shore) experienced a net loss (over both public and private land) of 129ha of tree cover in just three years, 2013-2016. This was by far the highest in Auckland, with the next closest being an 82ha loss.

The high level of loss is expected to continue on private land with more development, and new planting on public land is a way to offset this.

However, with around 70 percent of trees located on private land, a big challenge lies ahead. Presenting the final plan to the local board, Council’s Urban Forest senior advisor, Howell Davies, said that because the proposed increased planting will only be on public land, it will be difficult to achieve an overall increase in tree cover, as so many trees are being felled on private land.

“Our goal is no net loss of the current tree cover, with a regional target to

increase tree cover to 30 percent,” Howell says.

Airport submissions online

Submissions for North Shore Aero Club’s application for Airport Authority Status are now available to view at www.transport.govt.nz/consultations/north-shoreairports-application-for-airport-authority-status/ There were almost 500 submissions on the proposal, which generated keen community interest. The application has the potential to allow the airport to expand and increase the number and size of aircraft that use the Dairy Flat facility. Ministry of Transport staff are now analysing them before they provide advice to the Minister. If the Minister decides to take the proposal forward, the final decision will be made by Cabinet.

Thirty-four homes are planned for the former bus depot at 188 Centreway Road, Ōrewa.

Project manager Nigel Williams says that the concept for the 0.5ha site involves a combination of apartments, shops and villas.

He says resource consent has been granted and around 85 percent have been sold off the plans.

Work is expected to begin soon, subject to final Auckland Council signoffs, Mr Williams says.

The 84.5ha Ara Hills development on the western side of the Grand Drive motorway exit in northern Ōrewa, is making progress.

There are six stages to this development, with a total of 575 homes consented to be built. Construction is underway for Stage 1, 142 lots (pictured), and this stage is already 90 percent sold. Developer A V Jennings expects to release Stage 2, around 70 lots, mid-year.

No work yet on Ōrewa North village

So far nothing has happened on the ground regarding the 114-unit retirement village proposed for northern Ōrewa. Last year developer Brendan Coughlan of Coastal Properties obtained an amended resource consent that added five additional units. The 1.19ha site extends over 25-35 Annalise Place and 488 and 496C Hibiscus Coast Highway. In 2019, the developer attempted to sell the site, but was unsuccessful. Mr Coughlan says he is currently waiting for Auckland Council to provide building consent. The land borders Nukumea Stream and Eaves Bush.

Next stage for East Coast Heights

Work is well underway on the 26ha development behind the Silverdale Park and Ride, known as East Coast Heights (2182 East Coast Road). The development will ultimately contain hundreds of homes. The Lots in Stage 1 were put on the market last October. Auckland Council advises that Stage 2 (95 dwellings) has now been approved. Council has also recently received an application for Stage 5, a commercial development at 2 Goldwater Drive. The commercial development (north of stage 2) proposes retail, a gym, office space, food and beverage, and a supermarket. This application is currently on hold awaiting a request for further information. Applications for stage 3 and 4 have not yet been received. The developer is Build Rich, which has three directors – two based in Hong Kong and one from Taupaki.

The new charge better reflects the cost of providing water at filling stations – a service which has been heavily subsidised for many years. It’s being applied after the summer peak to reduce pressure on rural and coastal communities, giving people time to learn about the change. This summer, we are opening three additional filling stations to help water carriers serve their customers in a timely manner.

Taking control Conversations around health and happiness are common in our industry when we see those who are ‘down and out’ with injury or following surgery.

It is not just physical pain that has to be considered but the impact on all areas of wellbeing. For many years I have simplified the idea of health or fitness to mean efficiency. How efficient is your body in all that it does? Is your blood efficiently pumped around your body? Do your stomach enzymes, gut and metabolism efficiently process food and nutrients? How efficient are you at processing or coping with mental or emotional stress? In recent times, especially – how efficient is your immune system at fighting off the odd bug or cold, or recovering from an injury?

The medical world is slowly starting to learn how closely connected our body systems truly are. We know that mental wellbeing is closely linked with physical wellbeing. We understand that chronic pain is best managed with physical exercise.

We know that Vitamin D from the sun, Vitamin C from fresh fruit and vegetables, and so much more, not only improve our immune response but overall wellbeing.

To be truly happy and healthy the two states must be intertwined – a sound mind in a sound body. Our body needs to be efficient.

In 2021, it may be helpful and encouraging to know that improving our body’s efficiency does not have to be complicated. As the saying goes, “to eat an elephant takes one bite at a time”. What could those “bites” be when it comes to our health?

Perhaps they may include going for a short walk once or twice a week; dedicated alcohol-free days each week; a weekly vegetarian meal; switching off social media feeds for a few hours each day to stem the bombardment of information; or trying meditation, breath-works, yoga or another form of relaxation.

Aristotle is quoted as saying “We are what we repeatedly do – excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”. A simple small goal accomplished repeatedly is far more effective then attempting an ambitious, unachievable goal and falling short.

I believe that 2021 is the year to take ownership of our health and happiness. It is never too late to start taking a small step in the right direction.

David owns Kinetics Physio in Whangaparāoa. The former competitive (now recreational) athlete says a lot of his exercise these days involves running around after his three young sons with his wife Sonya.

The Saddle Island destination race on Anniversary Weekend is one of the most popular events run by Manly Sailing Club, with support from Gulf Harbour Yacht Club. More than 30 dinghy sailors and five keelboats took part in this year’s race.

The dinghies left from Manly and the keelboats sailed around the peninsula from Gulf Harbour marina, with everyone ending up at Saddle Island off the coast of Mahurangi. A beach picnic was shared at Sullivan’s Bay. Congratulations to Team Walker (pictured), a Hobie Cat skippered by Paul Walker and his crew, daughter Kate, Kieta Dimock and Valentina Gladiadis, for taking out the win in the dinghy division; and to Enigma 1 who were first on line and handicap in the keelboat division.

Bus to America’s Cup events

Auckland Transport (AT) considered putting on ferry services from Gulf Harbour to the city over the core weekends of the America’s Cup Finals series next month, but decided that due to the probable location of race courses – three out of five of them are in the direct path of the Gulf Harbour ferry’s route – it is not able to do so.

AT says that an added complication is increased boating activity in the vicinity of the marina, as recreational boaties take to the water to watch the event. As a result, the advice to customers is to take the regular public transport bus service from the Hibiscus Coast Bus Station at Silverdale, to travel to and from the city.

Big leap for Estuary jump Among the riders were three professional athletes, including Lulu Bejot and Jaden Leeming, originally from Red Beach.

Two female riders took part – Coasties Nic Leslie and Jade Clifton. The pair also volunteered to help organise the event.

Scott says there were plenty of impressive thrills and spills and a highlight was when Jaden did a double back flip.

It was Jaden’s first Estuary jump.

“I’m all about Wheels and Wellbeing and this is a great event to involve and activate the community, have some fun and inspire the next generation of freestylers,” he says. “When the crowd’s amping you up it’s hard not to put on a show, and all the other riders were absolutely sending it.”

The Estuary River Jump event took a giant leap forward recently, when the number of participants increased ten-fold. Ōrewa BMX riders Scott Baulcomb and Glenn Southern started the event three years ago with the idea of “having fun and taking a risk”. Participants ride BMXs off a ramp at the end of the wharf at Amorino Reserve in Red Beach, perform a trick and land in Ōrewa Estuary.

Scott says until now it has been low-key – more or less just them and their mates, with about 10 riders.

They were blown away by the 2021 version, held on Auckland Anniversary weekend (February 1), which saw 100 riders, aged from six to 60 years old, take part. A large crowd cheered them on.

Scott says offering free Burger Fuel and amazing weather on a holiday weekend made the difference.

The course heads down a steep grassy slope, onto the wharf, up a ramp and off the end, where riders attempt tricks before hitting the water.

Two BMX bikes, which Scott says are “custom built of aluminium for salt water” are provided, as well as a scooter called Rodney.

Everyone takes part at their own risk, and rides to their ability, but Scott says they are extremely grateful to Ōrewa Surf Lifesaving volunteers (especially Stu Hanford) for taking care of safety – swimming back to shore with a bike can be a challenge, particularly for younger riders. There is also a health professional on site.

After almost two hours, and 100 jumps, the surf club called a halt to the event when the rip got too strong.

Interest seems to be so high now that the jump is expected to attract even more riders in future.

‘Punk’ vicar to play Coast church hall fundraiser St Chads Anglican church will be rocking on Saturday, March 6 when punk singer turned priest Josh Jones brings his band, Secret Chords, to the Hibiscus Coast for the first time.

Josh is the vicar at St George’s in Epsom, but in a past life was lead singer with UK punk/new wave band The Quads.

The Birmingham-based group was a favourite of legendary BBC DJ John Peel, who chose their 1979 song, There Must Be Thousands, as his single of the decade, and it remained one of his favourite tracks until his death in 2004.

However, after 25 years of writing, recording and performing music in the UK, Josh embarked on a very different journey that resulted in him and his family following friend and spiritual mentor Rev Iain Gow to Auckland and, subsequently, to his ordination as a priest.

Josh says music has been the constant

“enduring melody” in his long journey.

“My guitar has been my travelling companion, as an instrument of discovery, expression and therapy,” he says. “The profound impact that both music and faith have had on my life has inevitably brought me to a place of passion and curiosity to explore how one connects with the other.”

He says the Ōrewa show will explore themes of spirituality – but also the fun – to be found in music by the Beatles, Coldplay, U2, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and others, along with a few of his own self-composed songs.

The evening starts at 7.30pm, with supper and raffles to follow. Tickets cost $20 and all money raised will go to St. Chads’ building fund to replace its old community hall.

Tired of no sleep?

Sometimes I just get tired of being tired? Have you every just lay there at night wondering if sleep will ever come? Or woken in the middle of the night and find yourself simply unable to get back to sleep? You are not alone. Research indicates that one quarter of adults in NZ suffer from chronic sleep problems.

Sleep is very important for your health. Lack of sleep has been shown to increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, decrease your immune system as well as possibly causing increased anxiety and depression. If you are dieting, getting more sleep can even help you to lose more weight!

Many of us get distressed when we cannot get our 8 hours beauty sleep, but the fact is that different people need different amounts of sleep. What is important is that the amount of sleep that you get is right for you and you feel refreshed during the daytime.

The word insomnia actually covers numerous sleep problems difficulty in getting to sleep, staying asleep, waking early or a poor quality of sleep. Causes range from medical or emotional reasons through to unhelpful sleep environs or routines.

The best way to help identify the cause of your sleep problem is to start a sleep diary. Keep a general record of your sleep patterns.

Not exact minutes slept, as this can exacerbate the problem! Note factors such as caffeine, water and alcohol intake, exercise patterns and what you do before you go to bed.

Using this information as a guide a health professional will be able to help to determine why you are suffering from a sleep problem and find a solution for you. You may discover a pattern yourself.

Many solutions are simple. For example, winding down before bedtime, avoiding certain foods and drinks, and a bedtime routine can help.

I think I’ll go to bed early tonight. Sweet dreams...

Hot rods shine in Ōrewa festival This year’s Rodders Beach Festival in Ōrewa, on January 29 and 30, filled Ōrewa Reserve with the gleam and throaty roar of hundreds of hot rods.

Live bands, dancing and competitions such as Miss Hibiscus Vintage also featured. There was no Show ’n’ Shine in the town centre this year, but on Saturday the cars spilled out of the reserve and parked along the adjacent stretch of highway, attracting more onlookers.

The lead-up had been an anxious time for organisers, with Covid-19 fears in Ōrewa after two people who had tested positive visited local stores.

Everyone taking part in the festival, as well as local businesses that benefit, were hugely relieved that it went ahead. Organisers estimate more than 300 hot rods were there.

The beach festival is a reunion of many old friends – and new ones are made as cars are inspected and discussed.

It is also a fundraiser, with money raised this year going to the HBC Youth Centre. That amount is yet to be finalised as the paper goes to print.

Hot Rods and classic cars have distinct character, unlike any modern vehicle.
